Also attributed to Lincoln:
And in the end it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years.
Every one desires to live long, but no one would be old.
The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time.

Those who took him up on it had greed in their hearts.

There are good and bad in every profession. - there are good vehicles for financial security companies and bad ones.
There are good products within and not so good.
Most financial advisor's are in it for what they make off of what they can talk you into. They are very good at it.
Some - the few - are not. And their clients don't loose money

Indeed. I grew up in Nevada which had a lot of mafia influence when I was a child and teenager. I must be out of it to think there might have been twenty five years or more that I thought or corruption, from any source, was down. I guess some were just more sneaky than these guys.

Israel always has to go to the nth degree to show that it doesn't want war.
Hamas shows every day that it wants war, and yet there are so many people (okay, mostly nutjobs, but some of them nutjobs with a lot of international prestige) saying the West/Israel should talk to them, recognize them, stop boycotting them.

Hmmm.
Hubby JimPro and I were just talking about that (the spread of corruption) today. We both thought it wasn't so prevalent "back in the day," but two issues quickly came to mind...
1. News didn't spread nearly as fast back then ... indeed they had time to squelch before reaching the public.
2. Corruption was just as prevalent but not as much among leadership positions... just in the low/intermediate ranks... ?
Nahhhhhhh. FDR, etc.

Israel has been gearing up for it for a while, according to Strategypage. They have at least one UAV over Gaza at all times, and have been able to pinpoint launch sites and rocket factories. It's really about time that they take Hamas at their word and acknowledge the state of war that exists between Israel and Hamas.
One of the catches will be that running Gaza as a prison camp will be expensive, and moonbats the world over will have a cow as soon as Israel moves. This, of course, is on top of the cow that they're already having because Israel exists in the first place.....

re: #35 Steffan
Israel would have UAVs over Gaza regardless of whether they were gearing up for major operation. They are always collecting intelligence, never know when it will come in handy.
Israel is almost certainly NOT going to reoccupy Gaza. No one is interested in that. They will strike, they will destroy weapons factories and kill designated targets, and then withdraw, more or less as they have been doing in the West Bank for several years. The only area they might reoccupy would be the Philadelphi corridor, to prevent smuggling, but that raises international issues. I doubt they are prepared (politically) to do that yet.

Here's an interesting list.
Top 10 Poorest Cities
What do the top ten cities with the highest poverty rate all have in common?
(1st on the poverty rate list) Detroit, MI hasn’t elected a Republican mayor since 1961;
(2nd) Buffalo, NY hasn’t elected a Republican mayor since 1954;
(3rd) Cincinnati, OH hasn’t elected a Republican mayor since 1984;
(4th) Cleveland, OH hasn’t elected a Republican mayor since 1989;
(5th) Miami, FL has never had a Republican mayor;
(6th) St. Louis, MO hasn’t elected a Republican mayor since 1949;
(7th) El Paso, TX has never had a Republican mayor;
(8th) Milwaukee, WI hasn’t elected a Republican mayor since 1908;
(9th) Philadelphia, PA hasn’t elected a Republican mayor since 1952;
(10th) Newark, NJ hasn’t elected a Republican mayor since 1907.
(11) No Republican held ANY office in Pittsburgh for 65 years until two were elected in 1995.Einstein once said, ‘The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.’
It is the disadvantaged (define that however you will) who habitually elect Democrats — yet they are still disadvantaged after all these years! Imagine that.

Morning Lizards,
Anyone else have as cool a Christmas as I did? The wife and I went to the shooting range in Cherokee National Forest. Wife took her Glock 27 that she hasn't fired for a couple years and from 25 yards put every round on paper (the paper being about the size of a man's torso). We also took my Sig 556 and Remington 700 and got my optics zeroed in. I haven't had that much fun on Christmas since Santa brought my little brother and me a go cart.
HOPE everyone had as good a Christmas, cause I wouldn't CHANGE a thing about mine.

Peace through superior firepower, it's the only way that freedom can be defended. That may not make it "right" in the eyes of the CodePink crowd or the New York Times, but it does make having a strong military an absolute necessity.
If we don't support our Military, then sooner or later a latter-day Genghis Khan will conquer us. I think the CodePink and assorted fellow traveling freaks want that to happen. They see it as payback for our prosperity.

The Taleban have ordered the closure of all girls’ schools in the war-ravaged Swat district and warned parents and teachers of dire consequences if the ban is flouted.
In an announcement made in mosques and broadcast on radio, the militant group set a deadline of January 15 for its order to be obeyed or it would blow up school buildings and attack schoolgirls. It also told women not to set foot outside their homes without being fully covered.
“Female education is against Islamic teachings and spreads vulgarity in society,” Shah Dauran, leader of a group that has established control over a large part of Swat district in the North West Frontier Province, declared this week.

This is only going to help the Taliban and AQ. I see more cross border strikes as a result of this.

I wouldn't be so sure on that. China's brand is dropping fast with the amount of tainted crap showing up on the market, and the chinese population is getting restive because the economic kick they got earlier is starting the evaporate.
While Soviet Union, MK II might have the balls for a fight, they simply don't have enough gun right now. The oil crash has ripped the mask of a lot of what's going on internally. whila external war might unite them...they simply don't have the infrastructure for it any more

Breaking News > Pakistan Moving Thousands of Troops to Indian Border, Intelligence Officials Say (Foxnews.com banner, no story)
Pakistan cancels troops' leave over India tension (Reuters)
ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan's army has canceled troops' leave and ordered them to report to duty because of tension with old rival India over last month's militant attacks in Mumbai, a military official and soldiers said on Friday.
No, it's not good, even though it was somewhat expected. For more than a month the Pakistanis have been warning they'd do precisely the very thing that the intel officers now say is occurring.
Pakistan thinks that the Indian government is a bigger threat to them than the Islamists who continue to threaten NATO supply lines in Pakistan and who have routinely taken potshots at the Pakistani government.
The Mumbai attacks threaten the NATO operations in Afghanistan, and that was part of the reason for the terrorists carrying them out - it was to increase tensions between India and Pakistan to divert attention away from the Islamists, and to increase the possibility that the Islamists will hold sway inside Pakistan. The Islamists know the Pakistani government has to engage in a cycle of appeasement and crackdown, and the Islamists play this game very well, taking full advantage of both.

Prayers for the folks in Woodmere, NY. 78 year old man loses control of his car and plows into a building. Hurting a bunch of folks celebrating Chanukah.
Prayers for the folks in Covina, CA. Crazy Santa thing. Gosh.
Agreed - it was a kids' Chanukah party, which is especially sad because the little ones were hurt. Thank God no one died.
The Santa thing is just...not even a word for it. The guy knocked on the door and when an 8 yr old answered, he shot her in the face. She's alive, but I can't imagine what she has ahead of her. Of course, that's not half of what he did.
Prayers have been going up ever since I read about it all.

Yes Reine, that's me. Thank you for asking. He's doing better as far as the pulmonary function, but now his kidneys are in trouble. I haven't seen the nephrologist since the day before Christmas, so I'm anxious to speak with him today. The nurses tell me the most important issue at hand is weaning him off the vent, then they'll deal with the kidneys. But his output has slowed to almost nothing.

Bless these feds:
Now, feds probe Gov. Richardson of Obama Cabinet for 'pay-to-play'
This is business as usual for decades that I know of. It was the reason I never registered as a Dem, even when I was closer in time to my SoCal university indoctrination. It is a nauseating way of doing business. Luckily, NM has developed a huge science and technology enterprise that people can fabulously work in that isn't subject to this slime. This one has been in NM papers for a while. It is actually smaller than a Federal Courthouse construction project that netted way $$more for the Dems, and in outright theft rather than campaign pay to play contributions. But of course the feds can only do so much and are subject to pressures... they hit plea deals, publicize investigations, just like in Chicago - before they really get to the heart of it (or uncover the whole set up). So it goes on.

Yes goddess - you may add him to the Lizard Prayer List. (I just tried to post this, but it got hung up and went into cyberspace).
Anyway, we are very rural, so there are no acute care facilities here. Phoenix is our best alternative - they will be able to wean him off the ventilator, teach him how to care for his tracheotomy, and rehab his body. He's been in bed since the 16th, and has to get his strength back. They will also get him back on solid food - they've only been feeding him the last couple of days through a tube in his stomach.
The bright side of all this - he'll surely be done with his cigarette habit by the time he comes home!
I'm on my way to the hospital to get a report, then I have to go to work.
Thank you all for your prayers.

Well some of us have been speculating (and I emphasize the word "speculating" as in we have NO proof) that at least one if not more ME countries who's first Letter is an "I" and last is an "n" or two words "S being the first letter of the first word and "a" being the last letter of the second word!) is benefiting enormously from all this piracy. IF that's true, it could account for the difficulty in bringing these pirates down.

I hope the "document dump" over the Holidays, combined with the natural reluctance of the MSM to cover the Blago story ("Oooh, there's a Kennedy in the news, let's do that story instead!") doesn't kill coverage of the issue. Blago's request for subpoenas got a tiny "In Brief" mention in the local paper.
I'm still holding onto a slim hope that Blago will spill his guts and take out Rahm.

Good morning Sunlight! Geez, Blago, Rahm Emmanuel and now Richardson - Obama may have one of the most corrupt presidencies ever and he hasn't even been sworn in yet!
"Pay to Play" is the accepted way of doing business by the Dems. They may not be willing to say it now, but if you had asked them a year ago, they would have looked at you like you were an idiot and said "Of course, pay to play is how it works." It's only these prosecutions (even though they don't expose the whole thing) that are getting the pay to play to go underground. It has gone on so long that I actually think ordinary party operatives have grown to not know that it is unethical and illegal.

Just read in NYPost 12/26/08, something that may qualify as both virtue and vice. It seems that our CIA has been handing out Viagra to old and overstressed tribal chieftans, to get their groove on. In one case a sixty something chief with four young wives was given the blue pill in the hopes it might make him more willing to cooperate with the forces of freedom.
Well several days later the CIA operative (no not Valerie Plame) returned to a hero's welcome. The Chief spilled the beans on numerous Talibanis and their actions and he asked for some more father's little helpers, which the CIA gladly supplied.

(big secret is pay to play applies everywhere)
but that is an unspoken assumption, an outright demand is illegal
For some politicians, "pay" to campaigns would allow a person a chance to present their case to a candidate or politician ("access"). But under some administrations, it wasn't required in order to win a merit based contract with the state (or federal agency). That's where they gone further.

The Germans don't sink the pirates because they supposedly signed a sea treaty that emasculated their ability to take defensive actions against sea piracy. You know the law is the law and the germans (probably under socialist former PM Schroeder) had a moronic government at the helm which the German people will be paying for, for years to come.

Good Morning LT! How was your holiday?
Not too good. The standard relative visit went as well as could be expected. Problem came Christmas eve when we got home to find one of our three cats with inoperable back legs and tail. Rushed him to the emergency vet only to get told he had a "Saddle Thrombosis" which apparently is a cat problem involving a blood clot big enough to cut off blood flow in the main arteries to the legs.
We had to put him down and spent the rest of Christmas Eve digging a grave in the back yard for him.
Not the way to get festive.

The Rainbows Bridge Poem
RainbowsBridge.com
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
Author unknown...
I'm so sorry LT...

It's more than a technicality, IMO.
He's clearly a secularist who only attended any church because (the Rev. Wright racist baiting place) because he got political benefit.
Some people may think it does not matter, but I think it matters for two reasons:
1. As you note, the hypocracy of his rhetoric, and
2. When the chips are down, and he has to make the loneliest of decisions, where is Obama going to turn for guidanace? I like to think the president will pray for guidance and not just go for an extra-strenuous workout......but that's just me.

Beginning of the month, I received a news letter from one of larger/primary gun/parts suppliers - Brownells, Midway, can't remember which - they were saying that states were seeing sales up in the mid-30 percentages with some up into the 50's - year-over-year.
While there's a lot of windage in the media stating sales are up in anticipation that Obummer will limit or reduce our rights, there is, I believe, something left unstated - an implied and probably growing lack of confidence and/or distrust in our gubbermint.
If everybody loves & trusts Obummer so much, why the hell are weapons sales going through the roof - with sales greater than Y2K and more than September 11, 2001? hmmm? Something does not compute.

I never actually bought in to his Christian conversion. I do not doubt that he is a Christian of some description, but in no traditional sense.
It is well known in the Chicago Metro Area that membership in Trinity is a good, social, economic & political move in the African/American Community.
It has always also been widely known that it is a racist, hateful place.

Interesting article in the paper this morning, the Obama's did not attend Christmas Services & have not attended church since they left Trinity.
He claims two reasons, he does not want to find a permnent Church until they move to DC & that a President going yesterday to Services would be disruptive.
I know this is just a technicality , but he is not yet President & I don't care who goes to Chrch or not , but if you wear your faith on your sleeve you ought to go.
Other actual Presidents (and presidents-elect) have gone to church. I haven't noticed those other churches being disrupted, particularly. Sometimes the press catches 'em outside after services, but that's it.
He is trying to justify himself.

Very sorry to hear that.
This one was 10. Never heard of this problem in cats before, but with hindsight, we can see that the cat's recent vet visit where the vet heard a heart murmur (within the last month) for the first time, the writing was on the wall.

My BDS suffering relatives actually had a countdown to Bush's last day key chain.
When I looked at it it there was 30 day, 16 hours, 24 minutes and 15 seconds left of adults in charge.
There is a store in Nyack NY that has that. I wanted to pee in their door way but my wife wouldn't let me?

Good morning Ben - Fox had a 30 second clip of Obama going into the mess hall and the only folks I saw stand up and extend their hands were Black Troops. White and Asian of course stood up when he approached them, and certainly shook his hand when it was proferred, but they didn't do it "voluntarily". Forget Freedom of the Press, I want some Freedom from the Press.
Most of the MSM are activly attempting to hide and cover for the democrat's culpability in our financial meltdown. They know the demise of Freddie and Fannie can be laid directly at the feet of Democrats including Chris Dodd and Barney Frank. Jamie Gorelick and Franklin Raines made off with millions and millions of dollars before the collapse. No mention of the in the MSM - Doesn't fit the template - and Jamie and Franklin are democrats who were appointed by democrats.
Instead they just wash it all away. The media are as corrupt at the democrats.

Damn, that's surely some beautiful country. If I could get there even for just a day I'd go. Just beautiful.
And I found the explanation of how Blowing Rock got it's name from your link's "History" section
Before 1752, when Moravian Bishop August Gottlieb Spangenberg visited the Blowing Rock area, the windy cliffs of the area were home to the Cherokee and the Catawba Indian tribes, hostile to each other, and the basis for the story of “The “Blowing Rock”. Two star-crossed lovers, one from each tribe, were walking near The Rock when the reddening sky signaled to the brave that he must return to his tribal duty, and the maiden urged him to stay with her. His desperation in choosing between duty and love caused him to leap from the edge of the gorge toward the rocks below, while the maiden beseeched the Great Spirit to bring him back to her. The famous winds of the John’s River Gorge blew her lover back into her arms, and this legend about The Blowing Rock is still told today.
Thank you for that information.

Spain's prime minister says he has no plans to expand his country's contingent of peacekeepers in Afghanistan.
Within days, the government will eliminate a 3,000-person limit on the number of Spanish soldiers who can be stationed abroad. This has led to speculation that the 800-strong Spanish contingent in western Afghanistan might be increased, if US president-elect Barack Obama requests it. But Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero told a news conference Friday he has no such plans. (AP)

IMH and Honest O,
I make a personal attestation statement to ALL my Fellow Lizards. About me and about you.
I do not make statements on this forum that I DO NOT
personally strongly first evaluate my core beliefs on and agree with. While I have been in some instances, taken as perhaps obstinate or even in opposition, I wish to state clearly, that it is IMPOSSIBLE for us to agree on EVERY issue discussed here. I can only be responsible for MY own statements and beliefs...not for the re-actions it may cause in others. When I make a statement it is NOT to cause pain or suffering to others.
I have personal attestation that on issues that I RE-ACT to, it is usually about an issue that I personally have not resolved in my past personal history. Thus, it is best when I recognize that "a BUTTON" has been pushed inside of my emotions to re-act, that it is best for me to NOT respond immediately, but to stop and ask myself ..WHY? is this bothering me so? My mission in life is to learn something new about myself...every day. Today, I learn that I will reach out by being clearer in communicating my spoken and written words and that they are never used here on LGF to intentionally hurt another but, hopefully to assist another (and ourselves) in learning who we really are. I learn so much that is useful in my personal growth, from the communications of disagreements with others....If, I wish to hear what they are actually saying.
Personal Growth never stops unless you chose to halt this path.
Amen.
May we all earn a Happy New Year!

Little Blue Pills Among the Ways CIA Wins Friends in Afghanistan
The Afghan chieftain looked older than his 60-odd years, and his bearded face bore the creases of a man burdened with duties as tribal patriarch and husband to four younger women. His visitor, a CIA officer, saw an opportunity, and reached into his bag for a small gift.
Four blue pills. Viagra.
"Take one of these. You'll love it," the officer said. Compliments of Uncle Sam.
The enticement worked. The officer, who described the encounter, returned four days later to an enthusiastic reception. The grinning chief offered up a bonanza of information about Taliban movements and supply routes -- followed by a request for more pills.

I used those icy/hot packs and then last night slept with the heating pad. The heating pad worked great, I at least got some sleep. Took a darvocet, which made me violently ill. So no more painkillers. Will just take some aleve.
How are you doing today? Did the Hoopster family have a good Christmas?
ahhhh..I really hope you get feeling better...I got a bad wrist injury once and ate darvocets like candy...I loved them.. Sorry you got sick.

How was boxing day?
Hita, {rw}
Lovely it was! Sunny but icy (that Putin send us a blast of Siberian wind, right from the Urals ...), and everybody was out in the park.
What I find so sweet is that every year there are a new lot of little girls with their first, pink bicyles and pink little outfits, trying them out on Boxing Day!

Regarding the 4th estate. Do they get legal benefits and protections not available to the general public? Undoubtably they do. For example the Sulzberger family get to control the NY Times with a minority of the Common stock by having the family trust in a special voting category. If it was a normal corporation the shareholders would have been able to kick Pinch out years ago.

In those "cultures", also, they sometimes take multiple wives because a single (probably widowed) woman would not survive long otherwise.

I hate the NYT as much as anyone, but I don't think this is a MSM specific special deal. There is a similar legal ownership deal with Ford. The family owns a differnt class of stock that controls the voting intersts. So this is a wall street created ownership that is outside the norm. Anyone can do it, but it's a tough sell for the minority/non-voting shareholders.

This is important. Let's discuss.
My POV was attending the game. When I think baseball game, I think of an afternoon game at the ballpark. It's nice and hot and I'm drinking a cold one. Football, a fall/winter, sport is a colder whether thing. Beer, while always good, is not necessary the best beverage to help keep you warm.....just my opinion.

OT:
Santa shooter in CA apparently not only murdered eight people, but had planned something more - a bomb was in his car, and it blew up as the bomb squad was trying to defuse it. No one was injured, but police had to evacuate the immediate area in case the nut left any more nasty surprises.
A pipebomb exploded Thursday night in a rental car used a day earlier by a man suspected in a Christmas Eve attack in which at least eight people died, police said.The car was parked outside a Sylmar, California, home where Bruce Jeffrey Pardo, 45, committed suicide hours after he allegedly - dressed as Santa Claus - opened fire at a holiday party and then started a raging blaze inside a Covina, California, home, police said.
Investigators have yet to identify eight charred bodies recovered from the burned house, which belonged to the parents of Pardo's ex-wife. A ninth person is counted as missing.
A police bomb squad was attempting to render safe a suspicious device in the rental car when it erupted in flames Thursday night, Los Angeles Police Sgt. James Bender told the Los Angeles Times.
This prompted police to then to evacuate houses near Pardo's Montrose, California home out of concern he may have left bombs behind there. That street was reopened late Thursday.

Interesting stuff. Flash forward 40 years, and as many people watch the Super Bowl to see the beer commercials as to see the game.

Good morning.
The market is generally up slightly this morning on light trading.
The Dow is up 33.22 and the S&P is up 1.36 points.
The NASDAQ is down 1.71 points.
The Nikkei finished up 140 points while the Hang Senfg finished down 36 points and change.
A lot of tax loss selling has happened in the past few weeks, so there likely will be less general downward pressure in the early days of the new year. Short sellers will also likely be a little less aggressive as there is a growing sense that the worst of the damage to the economy has been indexed in already tot he market prices.
It's starting to look like GMAC will be able to qualify as a bank holding company so they can access the Fed discount window and shore up that possible source of market unrest. GM is up 12% in early trading.
We are a long way from out of the woods yet, but the future is starting to look just a little brighter.

OT:
Santa shooter in CA apparently not only murdered eight people, but had planned something more - a bomb was in his car, and it blew up as the bomb squad was trying to defuse it. No one was injured, but police had to evacuate the immediate area in case the nut left any more nasty surprises.
Sorry bastard shot that eight-year-old girl in the face.

World opinion and the FMSM will still blame Israel for the deaths. Only if those joooos would just give up and let the peace-loving Palis just kill them would things be ok.

It's not as fun as taling about beer, but I'd like to get you opinion of tax loss selling.
The IRS limits the amount of tax losses to $3k a year. I've taken that amount. Going beyond that for next year seems counterproductive to me. Why sell more that that if you think a stock is undervalued?
Your thought?

You've just gotta Hatem. As in Hatem Moussa, who's busy giving the terrorists their glamour shots for AP and calling it news.
These are terrorists who are trying to kill women and children - and succeeded in murdering two Palestinians. Nice.
Stay classy AP.

Handicapped Toddler Buried Alive, Naked
"That's when he saw the little girl's foot was buried; just her little foot was sticking out. The rest of her body was inside the ground," Urial."The little girl was naked and they say that she might be raped," Lauro said.
Unresponsive and bleeding, the girl was rushed into the house, where she was cleaned off and taken to a local hospital alive.

I don't trust polls like this. They probably worded the question something like this:
Which man do you admire the most?
A)Osama bin Laden
B)Chimpy McHalliburton Bushitler
C)Satan himself
D)The Messiah, also known as the One, the Healer of Climate and god among insects, Barrack Obama
Any votes not for Obama should be reviewed. I'm sure after reviewing them, the two Democrats and one Republican that are examining the ballots will vote on what they think the voter's intent was.
