NYT: Bush Has Built the Foundation for Better Health Care

Health | Fri, Dec 26, 2008 at 9:22:47 am PST

Now that President Bush is leaving office and Barack Obama is elected, it’s safe for the New York Times to publish articles pointing out that Bush might not really have been like Hitler after all: Bush Has Built Foundation for Improved Health Care.

NASHVILLE — Although the number of uninsured and the cost of coverage have ballooned under his watch, President Bush leaves office with a health care legacy in bricks and mortar: he has doubled federal financing for community health centers, enabling the creation or expansion of 1,297 clinics in medically underserved areas.

For those in poor urban neighborhoods and isolated rural areas, including Indian reservations, the clinics are often the only dependable providers of basic services like prenatal care, childhood immunizations, asthma treatments, cancer screenings and tests for sexually transmitted diseases.

As a crucial component of the health safety net, they are lauded as a cost-effective alternative to hospital emergency rooms, where the uninsured and underinsured often seek care.

You folks have it all wrong. The NYT editorial staff was just given the latest bad news about their company being not eligible for a bailout, and have to do something, anything really, to try and get some of that fed-love.

So, they're finally starting to run the news that they should have been running for years - that the economy wasn't nearly as bad as they said, that Bush did improve the lives of millions, and that liberating 50 million wasn't such a bad thing after all.

Just watch, those stories will be coming soonly. After all, the NYT share price can't go much lower and the NYT fiscal wizards can't quite do a convincing act that they're really a bank holding company, although one has to wonder if they might be devious enough to claim it on the basis that they bank good stories about the GOP and give favorable credit to Democrats at will. It's their version of the lend-lease act. /

As she completed a breathing treatment one recent afternoon, Willie Mai Ridley, a 68-year-old beautician, said she would have sought care for her bronchitis in a hospital emergency room were it not for the new clinic. Instead, she took a short drive, waited 15 minutes without an appointment and left without paying a dime

Wow! FREE HEALTH CARE! Everybody should have this!

I think they should.

Then, if you want better care, you can still pay for it, and the existence of the free care will seriously reduce the price for the paid services. Especially since the for-profits then don't have to burden patients with the overhead for free care provided elsewhere.

This is coming, folks. Would have been here in the 1990s if Hillary wasn't such a bitch that she fouled it up. Let her go foul up Bosnia or Iran or something now, let them watch out for themselves.

One last thing - if Bush did this great clinic thing, why hasn't he publicly rung his own bell? Why didn't McCain reference it in the campaign? The NYTimes it he NYTimes, but what is wrong with Bush, even when he does good things, he doesn't push them? Sigh. Just how it is, I guess.

Most crises happen in parts of the world where no one else can get to or provide the kind of immediate assistance that the US can provide.

Most crises happen in parts of the world where no one else can get to or provide the kind of immediate assistance that the US can provide.

Those evil aircraft carriers and US Navy battle groups? Well, they also have immense humanitarian capabilities, including providing potable water, food, and airdropping all kinds of materials. And they can go practically anywhere in the world on a moment's notice.

We all know that. Its the EVIL USA that always sorts the Worlds shit out.

Funny story. A group of us were sitting in the crew's mess when a young Lt. came in to get some coffee. An old chief asked, "Hey, Mr. Jones, did you go to the Naval Academy?"

Lt. Jones said, "Hell no, Chief, I got an education."

Just then the CO tapped Mr. Jones on the shoulder and said. "Lt., a word with you in the wardroom"

(CO was an Annapolis grad - very proud of it.)

In Mr. Bush’s first year in office, he proposed to open or expand 1,200 clinics over five years (mission accomplished) and to double the number of patients served (the increase has ended up closer to 60 percent). With the health centers now serving more than 16 million patients at 7,354 sites, the expansion has been the largest since the program’s origins in President Lyndon B. Johnson’s war on poverty, federal officials said.

So Pres. Bush is being credited with adding to LBJs war on poverty.

Money spent on WoP as of 2005: $4.7 Trillion
Poverty rate: unchanged.

re: #65 NelsFree

Dear ItellU,

WHO exactly is paying for that "free" care? It ain't free!

Love, NelsFree

One last thing - if Bush did this great clinic thing, why hasn't he publicly rung his own bell?

Pres. Bush does not care about opinion polls. He just does his best.

In reverse order:

That's probably right about Bush, but it's been his #1 mistake. A big part of being a leader, is being public about it. He needs to brag, and apparently doesn't like to. It has hurt him.

Regarding the free care, no, it's not free, so the questions are, can we afford it, and if so, how do we do it most efficiently. The answer to the first is apparently yes. We are a big, rich society, even with all the recent folderol. And we *do* offer it up now, just really inefficiently. EVERYONE has known this for ten, twenty years or more, it's just nobody has quite got up the steam to DO something about it. Both parties were all ready to do it in 1992, but Hillary came in, pissed off the Republicans, and there it went. The Clinton's legacy so far is fifteen years of ever-more inefficient health care, because they are too radically partisan to go with the flow. 0bambi makes all kinds of silly noises about healthcare, but he might at least use them to back the kind of clinics that this article talks about, they are probably the single best thing anyone *could* do for the current system. And, who knew we were already doing it!

Mr DT went to one of these government clinics to get a tetanus shot after cutting himself on some rusty metal.

The receptionist added up his bill for 2 items - the office visit and the shot - incorrectly. When he pointed out her error - she added it up incorrectly again - when he showed her what it really was, she became argumentative - and insisted that she was right. He was astounded.

He was so frustrated he paid the incorrect amount and took the name of the office manager to rectify the situation. The office manager called him later and apologized profusely. She said they had been "working with" this particular receptionist to get her up to speed.

Heh -- but that still doesn't fully explain things for a kid who doesn't understand "a broken clock is right twice a day" -- when a VCR blinks "12:00," it's referring either to noon or to midnight, but not to both. (Because VCRs, at least from the earliest progammable models, have always made an AM/PM distinction -- otherwise they wouldn't have been programmable more than 12 hours in advance!)

And I'm pretty sure that most VCRs used "00:00" for midnight, so the blinking 12:00 was "correct" only at exactly noon.

That had me scratching my little head for days. "No" what? No, I don't get a fortune? No, these little slips of paper do not have any wisdom? No, the meaning of life cannot be found in a cookie?

Maybe I should have asked the cookie a question before I opened it.

You are so right. My wife and I deliver meals on wheels. Most of the folks are elderly, and we love doing it because it helps them stay in their homes.

However, we deliver to one person who lives in a total dump. Kids have tattered clothes, there's hardly any furniture - and what there is, well, is awful.

But they have a brand new, HUGE, big screen television that takes up most of the room.

GM shares rally after lending unit gets bank status

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- General Motors Corp. shares jumped more than 13% Friday after its lending unit received approval to become a bank holding company, opening the door to a much-needed pool of federal funds.

At last check, GM shares were up 43 cents at $3.68 after moving as high as $4 in early trades. The stock is still down 85% since the beginning of the year.

GMAC Financial Services, which finances most of GM's car and truck inventory, had sought the designation in part because it wanted to tap the availability of federal bailout funds.

GMAC, of which GM holds a 49% stake, said late Wednesday that iy would have "expanded opportunities for funding and access to capital, which will provide increased flexibility and stability."

Yup, must be a precursor to something pretty serious.

Could be.

Could also be people parking cash over the Holidays in something they hope is safe and wait to see what the new year brings.

Reasons for the gold rise.

Gold rises to above $870 on rising oil, gloomy retail

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Gold futures rose nearly 3% Friday to above $870 an ounce as investors bought the metal on the heels of rising oil prices and sinking retail sales.
In thin trading, gold for February delivery ended up $23.20, or 2.7%, at $871.20 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gold finished the week up 4%. For the year, it has also risen 4% so far.
Crude-oil futures jumped 5.4% to above $37 a barrel Friday, following their 9.3% slump in the previous session. Rising oil prices tend to push up gold prices as they increase the metal's appeal as a hedge against inflation.
Aggressive price discounting by U.S. retailers was apparently to no avail. Data released Friday by MasterCard Inc.'s SpendingPulse unit showed total retail sales, excluding automobiles, fell by 5.5% in November over the year-earlier period and by 8% in December through Christmas Eve.

The left are desperate for nanny-state fascist government run health care.
Heathcare that will assuredly ruin the industry just as it has in Canada and Europe. Free is nice when you are healthy - but when a serious illness strikes, say goodbye to your choices and get in lie to die.

The left trot out the same old deceiving and alarming statistics.
Never mind the truth: That MOST of the uninsured in the nation consist of people between jobs, people who have chosen not to buy it, or young people who don't want to spend their money on health insurance.

No need for a flying pig here. Note that what Bush has done is the only spending on health care that the NYT approves of, that is, tax dollars dumped into showy public works projects.

If the President had tried to reform private practice, or if he had tried to reduce onerous and wasteful regulation, or if he had tried to give tax breaks for medical savings accounts, or tried other reforms of that nature, you can be sure there would be no such hearty praise from the NYT. But spend a few billion here and there and then Pinch and the boys will be eating out of your hand.

Oh great, now they say something positive about George Bush! I've noticed some positive articles about Sarah Palin too. Maybe they aren't feeling well...

You know where they come up with this "45 million uninsured" BS, don't you? If a person lapses in paying a premium for only ONE day, that person is technically "uninsured" until the premium payment clears. The actual number that is really no-shit uninsured for the entire year, is far, far less. So, if you were unuinsured for only one little day, you count in this fantasy apocalyptic number of 45M they love to toss around.

I've read the real number is more like five million, which, out of 300M population, is 1.67% of the population. Some health care crisis, huh?

Yup, I hit this one pretty late!
