Moe: Wait a minute! You lamebrains can’t do anything right can ya? Come on! (pulls Larry’s hair) You come over here!

Larry: Just a second! Let me have that wrench!

(Larry drops wrench on Moe’s foot, Moe slips on pipe and hits his head)

Moe: You imbeciles!

Speaking of the Three Stooges and politics:

Charles, there's a classic Stooges short where they're doing something (fixing the plumbing, one assumes) in a rich person's mansion; and when the Stooges show up, the millionaires are having a swimming pool party in the back yard, and one of the bathing beauties says, "Last one in the pool is a Republican!" and they all jump in. (This was filmed in the mid-'30s, if I recall). I thought it was a perfect encapsulization of the wealthy liberal hypocrite, even back then!

Anyone able to find this clip on YouTube or anywhere?

I'm glued to the tube, but already disgusted by the WP reporting on the Gaza op. The headlines always start with "205 dead". If the World happened to be honest, the headlines in a righteous world would read "Israel Strikes Back and Islamic Thug Garbage"..

Scientific illiteracy all the rage among the glitterati

Unfortunately, scientific illiteracy is not limited to "the glitterati", but extends to the majority of the "unwashed masses" as well. And, it's not just scientific illiteracy, but just about every area of knowledge. Americans can tell you who is winning on American Idol and what starlet is wearing the new dress, but they have trouble finding Iraq (let alone the USA) on a map. Forget about scientific knowledge. These are the same people lapping up "global warming" from charlatans like Algore like it's an undisputed fact.

HONOLULU, Hawaii (AFP) — US president-elect Barack Obama is "monitoring" the deadly violence in the Gaza strip while he is on vacation in Hawaii, a spokesperson said Saturday.

Obama, who takes office on January 20, "is closely monitoring global events, including the situation in Gaza," said his chief national security spokesperson Brooke Anderson.

IDF Releases Photos of Hamas Targets, Terror Training Facilities

(IsraelNN.com) The IDF on Saturday night released aerial photos of Hamas facilities targeted by IAF fighter pilots on Saturday in Operation 'Cast Lead.'

The photos show the military training facilities Hamas has developed in Gaza, where Israel forcibly evicted close to 10,000 of its Jewish citizens in August 2005 in hopes of establishing peace with its Palestinian Authority Arab neighbors.

Israeli embassies and installations around the world have increased their level of security, expecting possible terrorists attacks as a result of the IDF operation in Gaza. Extra security has been stationed at embassies, consulates and El Al offices around the world.

Police in Israel are also at their highest alert level, especially in cities with mixed Arab and Jewish populations. Police leave has been cancelled and shifts have been extended to 12 hours. Police sources said intelligence reports indicate that Hamas or Islamic Jihad will attempt a terrorist attack inside Israel in order to divert the attention of Gaza Arabs from Israel's successes against the terror bases.

Camo (Black) Ice 24 oz Can - about $1.50/can, 10.5% abv, tastes like an average lager with cheap vodka as an "Octane Improver." Works for me, as required. Otherwise prefer Sam Adams.

Eco-friendly fraud:

Starchy packing peanuts flunk a flush test

RALEIGH -- To Raleigh's thinking, that holiday gift from your tree-hugger friend contains a hidden danger: biodegradable packing peanuts -- menace to plumbing pipes everywhere.

Raleigh's public utilities crew tested the popular corn-starch packaging and discovered that, contrary to the advertising, they do not dissolve in water.

"They actually required agitation," said Dale Crisp, the city's public utilities director. "We were stirring vigorously, and even when we did so overnight, they did not completely dissolve."

I understand that the Pope has pronounced that Israel should find another way to deal with the missiles from Gaza, and has pontificated that the IDF operations are not worth the damage to the peace process.

I respectfully disagree with the Pontiff on both counts, and would simply point out that his advice is not only worthless but should also be an embarrassment to every thinking Christian.

That's been known since WW1. Field surgeons discovered that soldiers with open wounds crawling with maggots never developed gangrene. There actually is a scientific reason for that too. They only eat the tissue that is dead and rotting. Before it gets a chance to infect the rest of the limb. Being bled by leeches has never stood up to scientific scrutiny. On the other hand analgesics were discovered in it's saliva and that had a use.

As for maggots, well, like so much else its an old-wives-tale (never mind WWI- until its been proven by modern evidence-based medical investigation.
Rightly so - see the famous placebo effect.

Btw - all those who only believe in NEw age crap and love their chinese herbal medicines because they,re so natural and so effective - time and again it has been shown that said medicines are full of modern chemicals, some very damaging, and that its these modern chemicals which actually ahve that fabulous healing effect.

Alas, these are facts. Facts are of no use to these people; they expect to exhibit aggression and suffer no consequences. Suffering the consequences of their own aggression is seen as "war crimes". That's the template and no other views, no matter how documented, will be deemed acceptable.

Bush, Saudi King talk amid Israel-Gaza bloodshed

CRAWFORD, Texas (AFP) — Saudi King Abdullah told US President George W. Bush by telephone on Saturday that major countries must take action to halt Israel's attacks on Gaza, the Saudi state news agency SPA reported.

White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe had said earlier that the king had called Bush, who was preparing to usher in 2009 on his Texas ranch, to discuss "the Middle East" and had declined to offer further details.

But SPA reported that King Abdullah had discussed "the Israeli aggression against Gaza" and the "implications of continuing Israel's policies of blockade, occupation and torture against the Palestinian people all over the Occupied Territories."

The king also called for "the major countries to shoulder their responsibilities to stop this Israeli attack and save the lives of the innocent and remaining infrastructure in the Palestinian territories."

Abdullah made the call after a meeting in Riyadh with Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas.

In fact there was always rumor that pregnant women were advised to drink porter-stouts as they are rich in iron.

In 1988 when my twins were born, the pediatrician told me to have a pint of Guinness (the dark stuff) every day at 5 pm. He said to help with the breast feeding. I never knew why until now. I did exactly as I was told. My husband got in the habit too. . . in sympathy, I guess. . . .

Utah store has bone to pick with shoplifting dog

MURRAY, Utah (AP) -- A thief remains at large after pulling off a daring heist - in the pet food aisle.

Surveillance video at a supermarket in this Salt Lake City suburb caught a dog shoplifting, KSL-TV reported Wednesday.

The video showed the dog walking in the front door of Smith's Food & Drug in Murray, and heading straight to Aisle 16, the pet food aisle, where it grabbed a bone worth $2.79.

The thief wasn't even perturbed by a face-to-face confrontation with store manager Roger Adamson.

"I looked at him. I said 'Drop it!'" Adamson said. "He looked at me, and I looked at him, and he ran for the door and away he went, right out the front door."

Britain and US refuse to demand end to Israeli airstrikes on Gaza

Britain and the United States were on a collision course with their European allies last night after refusing to call for an end to Israeli airstrikes on Hamas targets in Gaza.

The wave of attacks marked a violent end to President George W Bush’s sporadic Middle East peace efforts. The White House put the blame squarely on Hamas, which it considers a terrorist organisation, for provoking the Israeli blitz.

Britain echoed the call for “militants” to stop firing rockets into Israel while calling for “maximum restraint” to avoid casualties.

The response was in sharp contrast to demands by the European Union for an “immediate ceasefire” and criticism by France of the use of “disproportionate force”.

Hapless Hezbollah ATGMs Revealed. August 27, 2008: Israel has published the analysis of armored vehicle losses during the 2006 war with Hezbollah in Lebanon. Of the 23 members of the armored corps killed in action, 15 were killed by ATGMs.

Despite the many hundreds of engagements, there are only 8-9 recorded incidents where Hezbollah ATGM fire was able to cause deaths inside armored vehicles, and four times where AT fire killed troops in buildings.

There are lots of great vegetarian dishes. I prefer a 16 oz ribeye, but I occasionally like a dish without meat. A good example is the botana from a Mexican carry out in our rotation. Load it up an guacamole, cheese, sour cream, hot peppers and some habanero hot sauce. No meat. Still really good.

that's it...gonna hit the streets very soon! (it was the guacamole)

Actually, Germany needs to take the next step and threaten (and follow through if necessary) to bring the Gazans to a Euro court like they did with Milosevich. The Gazans need to be up on charges of war crimes, etc. for purposely shooting random rockets into civilian areas. Come on Germany, be a man!

Scientific illiteracy all the rage among the glitterati

From the article:

Julianne Moore, who warned against using products full of unnatural chemicals.

To be fair, I agree with this one. It should be made clear that my definition of unnatural chemicals are any chemicals consisting mostly of the man-made elements that have only been observed by being synthesized in the lab, including Ununbium, Ununtrium, Ununquadium, Ununpentium, Ununhexium and Ununoctium.

Due to their large numbers of atoms, they tend to be radioactive. Many of them are unstable as well (110-114 are surprisingly stable).

As a result, I agree that you should avoid products that are "full" of these unnatural chemicals.

(Of course, that really hasn't proven to be a widespread problem yet . . .)

No.
They're re-grouping, and hoping that B0 will not replenish the arsenal the IDF have been using just now.
Biding their time ... unfortunately.

With the impending land operations about to begin, it looks like Hamas will be set back by a good year or two, and that will dramatically improve Israel's strategic position against Iran in the short term.
It would be really interesting if Israel next turns its full might on Hexbollah and cripples their terror missile arsenal.
Then the diarrhea would really start flowing in Tehran.
All Israel needs to beat back the hordes from the gates is the political will and the willingness to speak to the enemy in the language they understand - brute force.

The med is an awfully small pond for sub ops.

Lend Lease of three to six such vessels would be a good idea. Given refits and training demands you need three ships for every one deployed. While the one in training can be surged in an emergency that will take time so if you need two on station then you need to own six. Same logic applies to aircraft carriers. To my eye Israel needs at least one always in the Indian Ocean and one "elsewhere." That would give a survivable retaliation capability and reduce the incentive for preemptive decapitation by an enemy. Unfortunately given Israel's size and the psychology of some of their enemies it is still not a guarantee.

Highlight:

It also has one of the highest property tax rates in Michigan, yet has over 60,000 vacant dwellings (a guesstimate--nobody keeps official count), meaning real estate values are in the toilet. Over the summer, the Detroit News sent a headline around the world, about a Detroit house that was for sale for $1. But it's not even that uncommon. As of this writing, there are at least five $1 homes for sale in Detroit.

The city council has been such a joke that one former member demanded 17 pounds of sausages as part of her $150,000 bribe. Its prognosis for respectability hasn't grown stronger with Monica Conyers, wife of congressman John Conyers, taking the helm. She has managed to get in a barroom brawl, threatened to shoot a mayoral staffer as well as have him beaten up, and twice called a burly and bald fellow council member "Shrek" during a public hearing. But with all the problems facing the city, the council still found time to pass a nonbinding resolution supporting the impeachment of George W. Bush.

How bad is Detroit? It once gave the keys to the city to Saddam Hussein.

Just what is this European slash humanitarian concern for civilians? I'm continuing to drag through "A Distant Mirror" about the 100 years war between France and England, 1300's. The idiots would savage their own peasantry, so that invaders could not live off the land. Not to mention taxing the common people so the lords could make war. OK, that's a long time ago, but in WWII civilians were not exactly targeted, but neither were they exempted from destruction in attacks on Dresden and Tokyo, much less the Japanese in China, etc, and sure, the Germans in Russia, and sending buzz-bombs against London, and the US atom bombs in Nagasaki and Hiroshima. War is war. Don't start it if you don't want your civilians killed. Limited war sucks. Precision weapons are for assuring that the target is destroyed, not for minimizing collateral damage. The elimination of collateral damage is an UNFORTUNATE byproduct. In my humble opinion.

Gun show report:

We had another gun show this weekend. It was crowded, but it didn't look like a lot of people were buying. Not a lot of individual sellers, either. A lot of people were carrying guns, but didn't want to sell them. I asked a guy who was carrying a Colt Combat Commander about his, but he wasn't selling it. He did have a little Kahr in 9mm that he wanted a stone fortune for.

That seemed to be the norm. There was plenty of ammunition, but prices are still higher than they were before the election. There were only two weapons of particular interest. They had a couple of the new Microtech AUGs. These look really nice. I'm not a big AUG fan, but if I had the cash I think I'd invest in one of these.

The other gun of interest was a Russian/Soviet RPK. The receiver had Russian markings on it, and it looked like it had a machinegun receiver. I'd have had to field-strip the weapon to know for sure. They wanted two grand for the weapon, which is really on the high end for an RPK. I don't have the money, so I didn't inquire further.

All in all, it was an OK show. Nothing really special, but a decent selection of most of the regular weapons.

thanks...I want more guns...at least two more...my shotgun is loaded but I'm not...

That was then, and it was very slow and expensive, and there were casualities. The far better way is to send in a few flights of B-52s to carpet-bomb a clear path from here to there. That's what we have been doing in Iraq, and afaik, it seems successful.

Unfortunately the Israelis don't have B-52s, but a couple of days with the 155 artillery, and a few paveways for punctuation, is close enough.

The Egyptians will not let them move more than a mile or 2 from the border. They, and the rest of the Arab World, want no part of the Palestinians. Never have and never will.

Hey 2 miles is 2 miles, and besides, give the Palestinians a mile and they'll try to take the entire country. Besides it's about time Israel's Arab Muslim neighbors got to enjoy the company of the monster they created.

Looks like Obama's sitting this one out..

[Link: www.google.com...]

Also Saturday, a White House spokesman said officials would brief Obama on the situation in the Middle East. Israel launched rockets into the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip and killed more than 200 people. Israeli officials said it was retaliation for Hamas aggression.

That's very wise on his part -- to stay in the dark. What I want to know is how he arranged to literally remain in the dark...

Obama aides have declined to discuss specific preparations for Obama's 12-day visit, citing security concerns. They also refused to release a basic timeline of events such as when the home lost power and when it was restored — information typically released by presidents and presidents-elect.

The refusal to release that information led to confusion as local officials, companies and neighbors described what took place on Obama's pitch-black street — but not aides to the president-elect.

Brilliant, Barry, brilliant.

Notutopia --

Here's the best hand-spinning instruction site I've found yet, though if you can manage videos, I'm sure you could find one of those, and it'd make it even simpler, since you could see the process in action.

This has goodfor insructions on using a top-whorl spindle , which I think is a lot simpler than the bottom-whorl variety. It's also better for non-wool spinning, since they spin faster, and anything other than wool has to be spun fairly tightly to hold together. (Wool has a crimp, which makes it easier to spin.)

Spin-Off magazine info is here. It's quite good, both for articles and ads.

To make a top-whorl spindle, you'll need about a 12" piece of 3/8" dowel, a piece of 1/4" thick wood about 3 1/2 - 4" across (round is traditional, but square or octagonal work just as well, and don't roll away when you put them down), and a cup-hook to go on the end of the dowel.

Drill a 3/8" hole in the center of the flat piece of wood -- as exactly as you can, so the spindle doesn't wobble in use. Glue it about an inch from one end of the dowel, and let dry. Drill a starter hole for the cup hook in the end of the dowel closest to the whorl (flat piece of wood) and screw the cup hook in. You now have a spindle.

Get some fiber, and you're ready to go! Don't worry about making your yarn perfect at first, just learn to work with the fiber -- and save your lumpy yarn, 'cause it works just fine once plied, and eventually you may become frustrated at not being able to get lumps when you want to make such novelty yarn. (I didn't save mine, and I regret it now.)

Or you can buy a spindle, of course! But this is the cheapest way to go, and I find the weight's about perfect for the kind of spinning I do.

Oh, yeah -- sand the edges of the whorl so your fiber won't snag on it. At least that's important with wool; I've never spun goat hair, so I don't know how badly it might snag. A good precaution, anyway!

It's satire and parody, and some of it is funny. Barney Frank is very dangerous as a political adversary, because he's a smart leftist. On the other hand, his out-of-control homosexuality (gay prostitutes working out of his house? Come on!), for which his constituents refuse to punish him at the polling place, lends itself to parody.

Tom Lehrer was better at it than Limbaugh and Shanklin, but there were comedy record albums parodying the Kennedys, the Kruschevs, the Johnsons, and others back in the '60s. Anyone here have any favorites, and any links?

That was then, and it was very slow and expensive, and there were casualities. The far better way is to send in a few flights of B-52s to carpet-bomb a clear path from here to there. That's what we have been doing in Iraq, and afaik, it seems successful.

Unfortunately the Israelis don't have B-52s, but a couple of days with the 155 artillery, and a few paveways for punctuation, is close enough.

I've given my use the artillery to clear out a sixteenth of mile a day starting at the North-east tip idea more often then I should, and never got a ding for it I think. Slow and sewady, clear take and hold. Let the civilians out and make it ironclad that while Peace can happen at any tie there will be no more hudnas and once land is taken from terrorists it will never be returned.

My wifi is not happy. later lizards.

Among those who bore the brunt of the ferocious attack were 40 Palestinian cadets who had gathered for their passing-out parade at the police headquarters in Gaza City.

A Hamas general, who was due to take their salute, was among the pile of bodies after a massive explosion – possibly from a laser-guided bomb – tore through the parade ground where families were about to watch the ceremony.

Several of those who rushed to help the dead and injured beat their heads and shouted: ‘Allahu wants a candy bar'

Ploome - Hamas has an underground city under Gaza, al la the VC in Nam. Bombing alone isn't going to get it. And I understand and agree with your feelings.

However, B-52s and tunnel rats weren't enough in Nam. All the precision weapons in Israel are worthless when you don't know where to pin point them.

Then get the info, tanks are poor surveying vehicles, except for antitank mines. Any static position is useless and subject to bombing.

I'm not sure Ploome got my meaning, that the tanks might be gathered in case Hamas tries invading Israel.

Stay classy, Otto.

'I would like to take the opportunity to remember all the billions of fleas and lice that lost their lives in German gas chambers, without having done anything wrong other than settling on persons of Jewish background."

This is what Norwegian comedian Otto Jespersen said on Thursday 27 November on the country's largest commercial TV station. Much worse, however, is that the director of the station defended this expression of "satire."

A week later Jespersen, in his weekly TV appearance, gave a "satiric" monologue of mixed anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli remarks. He concluded by wishing the Jews a happy Christmas. But then as an afterthought, he said this was not proper as the Jews had murdered Jesus. Two years ago the same comedian burned pages from the Tanach in front of a TV camera, but this was no reason to terminate his employment. Jespersen explained that he wouldn't burn the Koran if he wanted to live longer than a week.

"IDF planes struck Gaza targets again Saturday night, with officials saying they had bombed several targets where terrorists were preparing to launch rockets against Israel. According to Hamas sources, an additional 20 terrorists were killed in attacks Saturday night, bring the total number of dead in Gaza to 225.

In all, the IDF has attacked over 170 targets. Targets included warehouses and training camps, as well as a number of underground rocket launching areas."

This could be what you are referring to however while good for IEDs - not so good for tunnels.

[Link: www.dcmilitary.com...]

Unfortunately, technologies that detect tunnels have met with limited success. Intelligence related information indicates that many tunnels exist but are undetected because technology has not reached significant maturity to identify voids in large geographic areas. Improvements to the detection system will result in a more compact and sensitive system allowing autonomous UAV surveillance of our borders to be demonstrated in coming months.

IDF Major General Yoav Galant, Head of the IDF Southern Command (PADAM), writes that "no one can detect a tunnel 20 meters under the ground."

However, Sean Osborne of The Northeast Intelligence Network notes that "EM Gradiometers can detect tunnels to a depth of 150 feet (45.72 meters)."

The EM Gradiometer concept was developed for the US Army Fort Belvoir Research, Development, and Engineering (RD&E) activities in support of the Korean DMZ tunnel detection campaign in the late 1980s.

Well, this thread is 8 hours old, but I have to give credit to the AP's Natasha T. Metzler for a well-written story about the Paul Shanklin parody "controversy." The only thing I'd fault is not mentioning the title of the CD -- "We Hate The U.S.A." -- which is newsworthy only because it provides context that the album is a parody, but Metzler does well enough in reporting that fact elsewhere in the article. She even points out, indirectly, that this "controversy" is old, and Rush Limbaugh has been using the song for over a year.

Contrast Metzler's AP story with this fishwrapper from the Washington Post's Michael D. Shear.

You can tell what they think of our music by the places we are forced to play it in. This looks like a good spot for a livestock show. -- The Mothers of Invention were opening for Cream in April of 1968 in Chicago. The place was very large and did look like it had been used for displays of cattle and other such animals.
