Barack Obama will need more than slogans to bring peace to Gaza

If President-Elect Barack Obama was in any doubt about the size of the challenges facing him when he takes office later next month, the latest eruption of violence between the Israelis and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip will have helped identify one of the defining issues of his presidency.

"Change we can believe in" might have been an effective campaign slogan to attract the support of disillusioned American voters, but it is unlikely to make much of an impression on the deeply entrenched, and bitterly contested, positions of opposing factions caught up one of the world's most intractable disputes.

My reason for saying that is because he's being hailed as a messiah by "the world". Obama has a habit of taking advantage of situations.

145 lawhawk  Sun, Dec 28, 2008 10:26:25am

Well, they're doing nothing that generations of Arabs and Islamists and anti-Israel acolytes have been doing. They're reciting mindless claptrap about Israel's genocidal intentions without the slightest bit of irony - especially when Ahmadinejad himself is routinely proclaiming the destruction of Israel is at hand and the Jews are scattered to the winds.

The repeated use of language such as genocide, holocaust, and revising history and the facts to suit their propaganda purposes debases the language - itself a goal of the propagandists against Israel.

If you debase the meaning of the Holocaust and genocide, Israel's reason to exist falters - as it was born from a real genocide and a real Holocaust.

The anti-Israel crowd has to invent these details - that Israel is engaging in genocide and perpetrating a Holocaust so as to provide a foundation for supplanting Israel with a Palestinian state. And the media willingly goes along with this time and time again.

Number of Palestinians killed by Israeli strike: 200 and counting. A proportionate response? Only to those who are deluded, racist or brainwashed.

The real shame of it is that the media is only reporting half the story. Israel continues to steal land and to expand its illegal settlements every day. Didn't land grabs start WW2? Shame on Israel!"

I think it's still a tad too soon to be picking a Republican to run against Obama in 2012. We still don't know how bad or good Obama will be, and while I'm betting on bad, we don't know where he will be the worst: domestic or foreign affairs, for example.
I do think Sarah Palin would give him a real run for his money - she will have been govenor of Alaska for SIX years, she is immensley popular among the Republican base, will be smarter about interviews and debates than she was the last time around AND she is a SHE.
I think there may be a sense, if Obama turns out to be as bad as I'm afraid he'll be, that now that we've broken the "racial glass ceiling" it's more than past time we broke the "gender glass ceiling".

Yeah, Air Power is terribly significant, but as is and has been true in all wars, victory goes to the poor schmuck standing there with a rifle in his hand.
You have to have land power to ultimately win any war.
Air Power can disrupt lines of communications, "kill off" enemy vehicles and troops, but you still must take and hold the enemy's ground to win the war.

Aha, that answers my question from #141. However, the machine-translation in the second bolded passage needs a little fixing -- it makes it sound as if someone needed protection because he had insulted the police! But the Spanish actually means:

The holder of the second (banner) [i.e., the pro-Israel one -- ed.] had to seek police protection amidst insults of "Nazi" and, of course, "Jew."

Israel did give them a state three times. I forget which country gave the land to both the Palestinians and Israels with the stipulation that both accepted the fact that both have the right to survive. The Palestinians never accepted this idea.

Three times they went to war against Israel. Each time they lost, and Israel got some of their land. Each time Israel gave land back in hopes of peach. Each time the Palestinians used that land to move their rockets closer.

The last time Israel gave land back, they had built a large greenhouse on that land that was raising a lot of food. The Palestinians went in and took anything of value and destroyed it. All they know is to hate Israel. If they would use that energy like Israel does, look what they could accomplish.

I believe the reason the Palestinian leaders want their people to hate Israel is so the leaders can stay in power. Who knows how many countries are helping the Palestinians in their fight to destroy a peaceful country. If they finally have peace, what will happen to their war hungry leaders? They would be out of a job.

It has been done there. Plenty. And lots of other places. There's nothing new about the Palestinians and their idiot sympathizers comparing Israel to the the 3rd Reich. That's old news.
The swastika has often been used in exactly this fashion.

The sign says Zionism = (swastika)I don't understand why everyone here seems to think the Palestinians are admitting their own very real Nazism. They are not. This is just the same old repulsive lie that the Israelis are Nazis.

Charles, I think your headline may have inadvertently misled many here to think this is some kind of admittedly Nazi march, some kind of "right-wing" thing. (?) It's just business as usual for the Pali-left protests. Then again, surely even someone who knows no Spanish might be able to figure out what SIONISMO and an equal sign mean.

Hamas actually stated they wanted Spain as well.

bin Laden stated the same in as many words, Yearned for the "good OLD days", he did:

Osama bin Laden’s deputy explicitly linked the destruction of the World Trade Centre with events in southern Spain 512 years ago, by referring, in a post-9/11 broadcast, to “the tragedy in al-Andalus”, the watershed moment in 1492 when the Christian troops of Ferdinand and Isabella finally conquered Granada, bringing to an end nearly 800 extraordinary years of Islamic rule in Spain. With our foreshortened historical memories in the West, we see the War on Terror through a prism of recent events: Afghanistan, the Gulf War, the presence of American troops in Saudi Arabia. But in truth the landscape of Islamic memory stretches to a more distant horizon: to the Christian flag unfurling over the Alhambra, the great 14th-century Muslim fortress of Granada, and the Crusades that preceded it.

To be entirely fair to the Palestinians, though, which I do not care to be mostly, it's not as though they can take advantage of Jordan's Law of Return--they ain't got one. Jordan won't give non-Jordanian Palestinians citizenship, educational access, work, etc. So Jordan does the average West Bank Palestinian absolutely no good, regardless of how rational it might be to call them a "Palestinian state".

Here's a Spanish language editorial (auto translation):
""Nazis, Yankees or Jews, no more people elected," read a banner of these demonstrations "for peace" organized by the PSOE

Um, okay, I've been thinking some more about how to translate the Spanish slogan that appears on one of the banners in this protest:

Nazis, yanquis o judíos
¡No más pueblos elegidos!

Note that, first, it approximately rhymes (how very clever of them!). And after some Googling, I've realized that elegido does not mean "elected" in the sense of "voted into office." It means simply "chosen" -- and el Pueblo Eligido is Spanish for "the Chosen People" in reference to Jews.

Thus, the slogan should be understood as saying:

"No more so-called Chosen Peoples
Whether they're Nazis, or Americans, or Jews!"

Take note -- the sign is implicitly repeating the hoary old slander that the Jewish perception of themselves as "a chosen people" is a meant to be an assertion of Jewish supremacy, and morally equivalent to Nazis declaring that "Aryans are the Master Race." Plus, they throw in yanquis, thereby suggesting that the concept of "American exceptionalism" is also a Nazi-esque, racial-supremacist belief.

(Suffice to say that although Jews may think that following the rules of Judaism is a better way to live, they don't believe that Jews are by nature superior to other people. And similarly, while Americans may think that having "an American mindset" is a better way to live, they don't think that Americans are born to be the Master Race.)

242 So?  Sun, Dec 28, 2008 3:21:27pm

The idiots in London also protested in front of the Israeli embassy. They were manic. What a world of Jew hating nut jobs. Why have these educated enlightened people never demonstrated over the 1000s of rockets flying into Israel over the past 6 months. Why haven't they yelled and screamed 5, 6, 7, 8 Hamas are terrorists that we hate! The media coverage is atrocious as well. Just ..."Zionist oppressors, blah, blah, blah...

Keep going IDF, wipe out Hamas, this is your last opportunity, so go all the way. All the way.

243 6pat6  Sun, Dec 28, 2008 3:31:21pm

That sign, whining about the alleged "Palistinian" "holocaust" going on with their civilians, is the one thing they manage to hammer home, successfully, to the average "reporter" in the field and then fed to the editors, who then parrot this bilge to their readers. Whom, of course, believe it. Pathetic.

Hey, Israel, please finish this time, what should've been done two years ago! Root all of these Hamas bastards out and finish them off!

Thing about being an American is that you can come from anywhere and join the team if you wish. Bring all your cultural stuff with you, too, we'll swap if you have any recipes worth learning.

Thing about being a Jew is that you can not only join the team, you can NOT join the team, avoid inconvenient eating requirements, and still earn just as much spiritual merit as if you had.

Thing about being a Nazi is, well, you suck. Plus, the food probably awful.

(Regarding the 'chosen people' concept problem--I spent some time in college reading endless articles arguing that this was a hideous exclusionary concept. (Hanging with the other theology people.) Then I got into a wonderful conversation with a friend, a sweet moonbatty woman, who was doing reading on a tribe in the Amazon jungle whose spiritual leaders taught that they had been appointed by their gods to teach the Western peoples how to save the earth.

The Moors were sophisticated, skilled people who'd been part of a great and advanced country for centuries. They were kicked out, along with us, by people who managed to create a narrow-minded, dysfunctional nation of religious fanatics who burned people at the stake at court functions.

I disapprove of cultures that are narrow-minded, dysfunctional, fanatical and that burn people at the stake (or stone them, or whatever). Also of cultures that practice ethnic cleansing. I disapprove of them both today and in the past. I don't see any reason to cheer for los Reyes catolicos.
