Plan 9 Open Thread

Video | Sun, Dec 28, 2008 at 12:58:19 pm PST

We’ve started many open threads with quotes from it, so here’s the complete version of Ed Wood’s freaky masterpiece “Plan 9 from Outer Space” in all its below-zero-budget glory. Never gets old. One of the funniest inadvertently funny films ever made.

This guy has issues with basic stuff like moving the camera properly. And why is the narrator wearing a bow tie? Is that the proper attire of a prophet of doom? I'm not sure I'm going to make it to the end of this.

I tried to tell President Elect Obama that the job was going to be really hard.

Did he listen? Nooooo.

Every President hates the bubble, they need to learn how to carve out a private moment now and then. For Clinton, it was his BJ and the occasional Big Mac. Back in Kennedy's day, both the press and the Secret Service kept quite about his private moments with more then a few women. For Obama, he's worried about his kids so far.

44 Killian Bundy  Sun, Dec 28, 2008 1:17:00pm

"The sky to which he had once looked, had become nothing more than a covering for her dead body".

This is awful.

I think that's the only scene in which Bela Lugosi actually appears. Wood used old footage, because Lugosi had already died when the rest of the movie was made. In the rest of the movie a stand-in plays the Lugosi part, holding a cape up to his face.

Hey Charles, Dan is still Rather upset:

CBS newsman's $70m lawsuit likely to deal Bush legacy a new blow

As George W Bush prepares to leave the White House, at least one unpleasant episode from his unpopular presidency is threatening to follow him into retirement.

A $70m lawsuit filed by Dan Rather, the veteran former newsreader for CBS Evening News, against his old network is reopening the debate over alleged favourable treatment that Bush received when he served in the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam war. Bush had hoped that this controversy had been dealt with once and for all during the 2004 election.

Oh, no! Don't say that they're going to resolve again!

/the only resolution whose number I know is 1441, the one that called for force if Sadaam Hussein didn't comply with the terms of the cease fire and all the other resolutions, and if the other members of the SC had any idea that President Bush who actually insist on enforcing it, they never would have have voted for it.

Fortunately for them, they will have a castrated, "willing to talk", "Can't I just finish my waffles?" POTUS to push around for the next 4 years.

A woman named Kelli Roman had her privileges on Facebook taken away. This is because she had posted photographs of herself breastfeeding her child.

Kelli even started a group on Facebook called “Hey Facebook, Breastfeeding is Not Obscene.”

The group has become very popular and now has over sixty four thousand members. This is quite impressive. Her Facebook group is even going to have a virtual protest. The protest will involve people posting photographs of women, animals, or art that involve nursing. They are also going to change their online status to “Hey Facebook, breastfeeding is not obscene!”

Well now this is a little strange...

Today's push poll on CNN's home page isn't anti-Israel, for a change. It asks:

Where do you stand on Israel's response to rocket attacks on its territory?

The possible responses are "justified" and "condemnable."

So far, "justified" is winning with 61%.

Usually, CNN's polls are more along the lines of "are you in favor of the worldwide peace, harmony, and happiness that will inevitably result if Obama is elected (yes or no)?"

If you dive back into the conspiratorial theory, then the fonts were always embedded in Microsoft's program for Word version X. Hence the reality is (Ratheresque) that Charles is the majority owner of Microsoft and was able to use the flickering screen to hypnotise every Word user and travel back in time to replicate a font that would been seen to be commonplace in the future.

Charles owns Microsoft, invented kerning and needs to personally embarass Dan Rather so he can hang his head over the mantelpiece one he is TRULY stuffed !

Pardon me if this has already been noted, as I haven't had time to read the whole thread, but the movie "Ed Wood" does a fantastic job of telling the life-story of this movie's maker, including a hilarious section on the making of "Plan 9." Note that they are doing it "for the children" but the implications are serious. Unless you want the box, I wouldn't bother. Glencoe Models has re-released the kit several times, most recently this year, and you can still find it in the shops for about $10-$15.

If you scroll down to the bottom of the page I linked to, it shows the Glencoe boxlid. The main difference between the 1970's Lindberg re-release and the present-day Glencoe is that the Glencoe is moulded in silver plastic like the original 1950s Lindberg. The Seventies repop was moulded in green glow-in-the-dark plastic.

/Mine is painted silver, anyway.

This month in 1963, Studebaker ceased US production, before a 2 year move to Canada that ended it. It started as a wagon maker in 1852 and failed largely because of union contracts and strikes without a bailout.

Law Question for any Lizard Attorney.

Liability on a Home Owners Association sponsored New Years Eve party:

A neighbor down the street called me about attending a New Years Eve party and wanted to know if we would attend. I told her I didn't know what my wife had planned, but I would get back with her. This neighbor has a pattern of having parties with a lot of alcohol while children are present, she's also a school board member. Most of the parties in the past are touted as "Family Parties", but several of the adults forget that and become bullet proof.
An email arrived about a half hour later stating this was going to be a Home Owners Association party. The email said she had spoken to several of the neighbors and they had agreed to take money out of the Association dues to pay for a portion of the party...BS...I was asked if I would attend the party.

Question:

If someone at the party was injured or had an accident, could the Home Owners Association be held liable? Is it the responsibility of each one of the said Home Owners to make sure everyone drinks responsibly? Most of these parties are attended by people outside of the association and will be driving to the party. I don't know how association money can be used for parties without the approval of the home owners.

I don't have a problem with people getting together and having a good time. I don't like when it's presented as a safe party for our children while some adult get shit faced...that's why we stopped attending these kid safe parties several years ago.

Found this:

Earlier, President Hosni Mubarak condemned "the Israeli military aggression on the Gaza Strip and blames Israel, as an occupying force, for the victims and the wounded."

He ordered the Rafah crossing -- the only one bypassing Israel -- to be opened so that the wounded could be treated in Egyptian hospitals.

Dozens of wounded have already passed through, with hundreds more expected, state media reported.

A security official said helicopters were being sent to Rafah to fly some of the wounded to hospitals in Cairo.

I think that's the only scene in which Bela Lugosi actually appears. Wood used old footage, because Lugosi had already died when the rest of the movie was made. In the rest of the movie a stand-in plays the Lugosi part, holding a cape up to his face.

From IMDB.com's trivia page for Plan 9:

Bela Lugosi appears in footage shot just before his death, but with no script in mind. Edward D. Wood Jr. wrote the script to accommodate all the footage shot in a cemetery and outside Tor Johnson's house in the new production. Lugosi was doubled by Tom Mason, Wood's wife's chiropractor, who was significantly taller than Lugosi, and played the part with a cape covering his face.

I'm done justifying crimes against humanity by a country that claims to be an illuminated western democracy. I'm done defending a country that is unwilling to grant self-determination to a neighboring people because it won't let go of a few settlements and divide a city. I'm done tolerating the slaughtering of innocent kids, the murderous and barbaric occupation of an impoverished people, the utter disregard for human life.
Fuck them.
If they think their daily peace of mind is worth the lives of hundreds of innocent people, Fuck them.
If they think the best way to go right now would be to vote for Natanyahu (who is so far winning in the polls), Fuck them.
If they won't bat an eye before keeping millions without electricity or water, before bombing civilian neighborhoods at exactly the time when kids are leaving schools, before breaking every standard of international law or moral decency, Fuck them.

Thanks, Mandy.

I would be surprised if we have an attorney. I just found out that $800 was pulled for the pre-Trick-Or-Treat Party this year. My wife and I had the party two years ago at our expense...about 150 people attended. I don't like it when money is spent without our knowledge...we don't have annual meeting to review the books, but I guess we should start.

I assume these people, the Board, was voted in. Maybe they should be voted out next year. I find that people like to complain yet when it comes to volunteering themselves there is a "not me" attitude that prevails.

A suggestion is to see if you have Covenants, you should, and check out rules of fund disbursement. Usually the Board is the one that determines how fees are used. That should be done with a vote however some associations allow an officer to spend up to X amount of dollars without a majority rule.

And the Covenants may require an annual meeting - do check it out. I would think also that they have to send a budget out for approval for 2009 and review the expenditures for 2008 with the homeowners.

Bottom line - if you are this concerned - you need to get involved because Homeowner Association should be a good steward of the funds paid to them.

Egypt ambulances waiting empty on Gaza border

Egyptian state media reported on Saturday that several dozen wounded had crossed into Egypt for treatment.
But state news agency MENA later reported that despite an agreement with Hamas for 70 critical cases to come to Egypt for treatment, no one has crossed "just yet."
"We're still waiting," a medic told AFP on Sunday morning.
"Sometimes they (Hamas) say they're going to bring people, sometimes they say they're not going to bring people," said another medic, requesting anonymity. "Now they say they want medical supplies for the wounded."

Anyone remember Annie Lennox?

Annie Lennox has called the actions of the Israeli Army over the last few days “a pornography of destruction” and says that the situation will only lead to more violence.

“I have to say that I feel deeply upset and affected by the recent bombings on Gaza,” she stated today in her blog. “The Israeli army says they are justified by taking this action, in retaliation for the shelling by Hamas, but it just seems to me that this level of violence will only escalate into more horror and killings. How can it not?”

Israel struck against Hamas for a second day yesterday. The death toll was more than 280. They opened fire on Hamas as retaliation for continued rocket fire from the region. It was Israel’s most aggressive.

Annie is appalled by the action. “It's utterly atrocious to see people suffering like this. A pornography of destruction”, she says.

What you described is good procedure, not only for protecting the organizaiton's assets, but to protect those responsible for those assets from being falsely accused.

I belonged to an organization that became lax in its bookkeeping, and before it was all over with, over the course of 18 months, the person in charge of the books had stolen close to $30,000. We did require 2 signatures, one of which was hers, and she was forged the second one. Procedures were put into place similar to what you described to resolve this.

Excellent point! I belong to two women's clubs, and both require bills to be presented to the membership, a motion and a second to pay, and the treasurer and president's signature on the check. The treasurer's report is read aloud and entered into the secretary's minutes.

Pretty much the same here - as far as involvement in clubs and associations. I volunteer for alot and keep pretty busy -

One thing though presenting the bill to pay at the meeting is too far along the process - you need to make sure that the expense. was authorized appropriately. When the plants are planted or the drains cleaned out it is too late to wonder if you should have done it or got the best price.

Two Board Member sigs for payment should be a must.

The Tay Bridge Disaster by William Topaz McGonagall

Beautiful Railway Bridge of the Silv'ry Tay!
Alas! I am very sorry to say
That ninety lives have been taken away
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

'Twas about seven o'clock at night,
And the wind it blew with all its might,
And the rain came pouring down,
And the dark clouds seem'd to frown,
And the Demon of the air seem'd to say-
"I'll blow down the Bridge of Tay."

When the train left Edinburgh
The passengers' hearts were light and felt no sorrow,
But Boreas blew a terrific gale,
Which made their hearts for to quail,
And many of the passengers with fear did say-
"I hope God will send us safe across the Bridge of Tay."

But when the train came near to Wormit Bay,
Boreas he did loud and angry bray,
And shook the central girders of the Bridge of Tay
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

So the train sped on with all its might,
And Bonnie Dundee soon hove in sight,
And the passengers' hearts felt light,
Thinking they would enjoy themselves on the New Year,
With their friends at home they lov'd most dear,
And wish them all a happy New Year.

So the train mov'd slowly along the Bridge of Tay,
Until it was about midway,
Then the central girders with a crash gave way,
And down went the train and passengers into the Tay!
The Storm Fiend did loudly bray,
Because ninety lives had been taken away,
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

As soon as the catastrophe came to be known
The alarm from mouth to mouth was blown,
And the cry rang out all o'er the town,
Good Heavens! the Tay Bridge is blown down,
And a passenger train from Edinburgh,
Which fill'd all the peoples hearts with sorrow,
And made them for to turn pale,
Because none of the passengers were sav'd to tell the tale
How the disaster happen'd on the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

It must have been an awful sight,
To witness in the dusky moonlight,
While the Storm Fiend did laugh, and angry did bray,
Along the Railway Bridge of the Silv'ry Tay,
Oh! ill-fated Bridge of the Silv'ry Tay,
I must now conclude my lay
By telling the world fearlessly without the least dismay,
That your central girders would not have given way,
At least many sensible men do say,
Had they been supported on each side with buttresses,
At least many sensible men confesses,
For the stronger we our houses do build,
The less chance we have of being killed.

I musta built at least 200 model cars back then...Revell ruled...they had separate little kits for engines and slicks with Cragers...all kinds of add ons...MTA was big too...then it got to where you could build the Swamprat or Stone Woods and Cooks 41 Wileys....oh yeah

Re-releases of old kits are gold in this way. I just got the AMT (ex-MPC) 1973 Mercury Cougar XR-7 for Christmas. I knew it came with the stock 351 Cleveland engine, but imagine my reaction to find that it also included the 429 H.O. of the Mach 1 Mustang. (The 429 was an option on the Cougar that year, but only 31 are known to have been sold with it installed.)

/ The 429 is going in a rebuild AMT 1970 Torino Cobra I think, unless I just go ahead and buy the Revell kit which has the 429 already.

Shameless staged photo du jour. Baby doll in barbed wire.

Technically, I wouldn't call that "staged," since it's clearly identified as being part of a political demonstration. (In my mind, it would be "staged" if they'd made it look as though the doll had been dropped by a Palestinian child who was crawling through a razor-wire barricade in Gaza, while fleeing Zionist soldiers who wanted the child for a Jewish blood ritual.)

But in any case, it's certainly over-the-top in a gloppy way that reminds me of Oscar Wilde's famously catty review of Dickens' The Old Curiosity Shop. ("One must have a heart of stone to read about the death of Little Nell without laughing.")

Really, the only thing missing from the photo is a unicorn weeping for the poor murdered Palestinian dolly, with a thought-balloon asking "Why?!"

Israeli commandos already fighting behind Gaza lines
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report
December 28, 2008, 11:49 PM (GMT+02:00)

Amid continuing massive air strikes and wide speculation about whether or not Israeli ground forces will cross into the Gaza Strip, DEBKAfile's military sources report small groups of Israeli special forces were already carrying out swift hit-and-run raids Sunday, Dec. 28, on Day 2 of the Israeli Gaza operation.

As Israeli bombers, gunships and drones hovered overhead, picking up every move made by Hamas fighters and their missiles, Israeli stealth squads popped up at command posts, transport routes and missile squads, hit some and then faded away behind sand dunes. This tactic sowed confusion in Hamas ranks and gave them no chance to regroup and recover from the crushing air assault to their military infrastructure. The latest Palestinian death toll is estimated at 296.

This ground operation, which is likely to intensify Sunday overnight, has two objectives:

1. To mark key targets for air bombardment;

2. To blaze the way for a large-scale armored incursion still to come.

The most important mission carried out by the Israeli Air Force Sunday was the destruction of 40 smuggling tunnels, severing Hamas' arms, fuel, ammunition and reinforcements lifeline from Iran and Syria via Egyptian Sinai. It raised the question of why this feat was not carried out during the three years since the tunnels began functioning.

Whereas Saturday, the Israeli bombers struck with missiles, Sunday, dropped CBU-24 bunker busters which detonate 30 minutes after penetration on the Philadelphi tunnels. By the time the plumes of black smoke rose over the targeted area, the Israeli planes were gone.

Revell-Monogram is the 800-kilogram gorilla of plastic models today, with their Revell-Germany subsidiary they have a bigger product range than any of the Japanese Big Three (Fujimi, Hasegawa, and Tamiya), and their prices are a lot more reasonable. (When Hasegawa's 1/72 plane kits started hitting the $40 mark at retail, I stopped buying them.) Model building is coming back in a big way as an adult hobby, among other things because for under $100 you can get everything you need to do it plus a couple or three kits to start out on- name another "adult hobby" that can make that claim. (Golf isn't one of them.) Myself, I've built plastic kits in my spare time for 46 years, and now that I'm (medically) retired I have more time for it. My definition of a typical relaxing evening is an old sci-fi or horror movie on my DVD player and a model on my worktable in the living room. I'm no master modeler, but I've won a few awards over the years.

If you have the time and want to get back into it, go for it. Model building today is, seriously, better than ever. And I guarantee you your local hobby shop is always glad to have a new customer.
