Tech Note: Article Mailer Now Ajaxified

Science | Sun, Dec 28, 2008 at 5:09:59 pm PST

You know that article mailer page we’ve had for years, that you get to by clicking the little gray ‘@’ button in the row of buttons below each article? It’s finally had a revamp, and now uses Ajax to get the information needed to send an HTML email containing a copy of the article. All without ever reloading a page, so it’s much quicker and easier to use.

Stronger than dirt!

Not as quickly as it would if it were built using Ruby on Rails.

Family reunion news you can use:

Did you know that grapes may be fatal to dogs?

At the family brunch this afternoon, my sister's dog snarfed up some grapes that fell off the buffet table. My sister freaked out, called the vet emergency number, fed the pooch an emetic and then carefully inspected the dog vomit for grape shards. There were 2 grapes in the pet's puke! He could have died!

Do people ever freak out like this over cats? Inquiring minds want to know.

Yep.
My cat ate a mop string once.
It was partially expelled the next day, and she was not happy about that!
I put on my handy-dandy plastic gloves, and gently tugged. Cat went berserk.
I called the animal emergency hospital, first thing they said, "DON'T TUG AT IT!"
oops.
Bottom line - in the end - everything turned out OK shortly after the call and I didn't have to bring her in.
But neither she nor I were very happy there for about a half an hour.

Several years ago, my cat had an inflamed urinary tract, due to overly-acidic urine. The willingness of my brother's friend (vet tech) to come over well after dark probably saved his life, but the obvious distress he was in had me in tears.

That could be just focal length of the lens, it appears that simultaneous explosions happened all around that building, or several photos were composited. The only other theory I have that explains the physics seen is possibly a tunnel or sewer surrounding the building with a hyperbaric penetrator going off inside the sewer/ tunnel?

The days of the obvious fake I think are over. I'm just trying to understand the physics of this one. If it's a real single photo, then the pattern of plumes speaks to some real fine targetting. If it's secondary explsions, then the munitions could have been in tunnels? Who knows it just appears odd to have that unobscured end of the building with plumes erupting boths sides while it appears unscathed.

No but, he stole $20.00 from my mother last week to buy The Simpson's for his PSP. Massive punishments. Massive.

Ugh. That's about the age for that sort of thing. Reminds me of me when I was that age.

I used to nick the quarters out of my old man's change jar. I always made sure to leave some on top so that if he had to grab a few for tolls there would be a few within reach. But beyond an inch or so that jar was quarter free. Once I had a reasonable stash I would pedal down to the arcade and spend it all on video games.

Mom discovered my stash and I was forced to deal in smaller quantities and make less frequent trips to the arcade. One day I had the sack of quarters and my bicycle ready to go and my parents decide it's the day for a trip to lovely Manchester, NH for some shopping. I hid the baggie full of quarters in some overgrown grass near the garbage cans.

It is now a few months later and I have forgotten all about my stashed booty by the bins. I'm in the yard and my old man is mowing the lawn and suddenly "cruuuunch-claaaaannk!". The lawnmower starts spitting quarters out the side like a rigged slot machine. He thinks he's found Bluebeard's treasure. "Honey, get out here!" he yells. My mother goes out and sees the quarters and the shredded baggie and immediately knows who is responsible.

"Care to explain?" She asks.

And in my steel trap of a 9 year old brain I came up with what I thought was the greatest excuse a kid had ever thought of.

"Maybe they were left as a time capsule by the people who built the house."

My mother hands me a quarter from the pile and says "Nice try. this quarter is from this year."

Long, but true story.

Wasn't what I was alluding to (see your #8), but not a good thing. Make the kid bust his ass paying it back as well as, yes, it is harsh, destroying the game in front of him to illustrate that crime doesn't pay.

I did that after the spanking and before the 30-minute time-out. My kitchen scissors will cut up anything.

In football news, the Chicago Bears blew it like I knew they would, and thankfully a national audience will be spared the agony of watching that team play in the play offs.

When a receiver jogs down field at 3/4 speed and gets 20 yards behind the defense for a 40 stroll to the house, when TE's are getting open by 15 yards, when the offense can only hold the ball for 23 minutes, that team should not be in the playoffs.

The Vikings are not much better, mind you, but they can at least run the dang ball.

Condolences to the Detroit Lions fans for the 0 fer the season. Look on the bright side, you got better offensive players than the Bears do. I predict that next year the Bears will work hard and take over last place from the Lions.

The Bears are due for another one of their 3 year re-build jobs.

When my youngest cat was a kitten, he had a similar experience with a piece of dental floss. Not having as much sense as you to call a vet, I did tug (gently), and everything came out all right, but he made some sounds never heard before or since.

The MSM continues to collapse:

Chicago's newspapers facing troubled futures

CHICAGO (AP) - A little more than a century ago, Chicago boasted 11 daily English-language newspapers.

The fierce competition among them, immortalized in the 1928 play "The Front Page," even turned bloody at times, and that drive to outdo one another led to 35 Pulitzer Prizes, journalism's highest honor.

Today, only two major dailies remain in this city of 3 million, and both are in serious trouble from declining circulation, plummeting ad revenue and a new kind of competition that threatens to make newsprint itself obsolete.

Suddenly, "Stop the presses!" carries new meaning.

Even as the arrest of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich on federal corruption charges brought the latest and most luscious of scandals to the teeth of the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times, questions were swirling about their futures.

How long can the smaller Sun-Times survive as its parent, Sun-Times Media Group Inc., loses money every quarter? And what of the dominant Tribune, whose parent Tribune Co. sought bankruptcy protection this month because of its crushing $13 billion debt?

Both papers are steeped in history, the Chicago Tribune's most famous single edition trumpeting erroneously in 1948, "Dewey Defeats Truman." The Tribune first published in 1847, while the Sun-Times, formed in a 1948 merger, has its roots in the Chicago Evening Journal in 1844, making it the city's oldest continuously published daily.

"I think it's great that Chicago still has two newspapers, and it would be a great disappointment to lose either of them," said Tom Spees, 50, a health-information service director who was looking through a Sun-Times left by another customer at Merle's coffee shop near a North Side "el" train station.

But at a downtown Starbucks sat the possible future of news - and the source of much of the newspaper industry's troubles.

Michelle Kurlemann plugged her laptop computer into a wall outlet and thumbed away at her BlackBerry. The 24-year-old interior designer said the closing of either paper would be "really sad," but she wasn't reading one of them, not in print anyway.

"I get my news online, and when someone I know sees a good newspaper article, they message it to me," Kurlemann said. "Still, I suppose that if the newspapers close, it'll hurt things online, too."

Well, one way to start turning things around is to actually practicing journalism and stop making Pravda jealous of how biased you can be supporing on political view.

A single Oreo cookie doesn't have any effect.

Also Sunday, Military Intelligence's Psychological Warfare Department broke into radio broadcasts in Gaza and warned Palestinian civilians not to cooperate with Hamas terrorist activity.

Palestinians reported that they received phone calls to their cellular phones and landlines from the IDF. I used to hate the Colts being a Pats fan, but I've come to respect them quite a bit ever since their defense did a 180 in the playoffs the year they won it (after their D had been so awful against the run that season). Indy has it made in the playoffs. I think they'll cruise to the SB. I used to hate the Colts being a Pats fan, but I've come to respect them quite a bit ever since their defense did a 180 in the playoffs the year they won it (after their D had been so awful against the run that season). That was unbelievable. And this year Manning practically did this on his own. I want to dislike him, but I can't anymore.

They have some problems.....
Tunisia is feared to be a new base for Islamists

Counterterrorism officials on three continents say the trouble in Tunisia is the latest evidence that a brutal Algerian group with a long history of violence is acting on its promise to organize extremists across North Africa and join the remnants of Al Qaeda to become a new international force for jihad. [This week, the group claimed responsibility for seven nearly simultaneous bombings that destroyed police stations in towns east of the Algerian capital, Algiers, and killed six people.]

Better than most Islamic countries but Jihad is a powerful draw.

True, but look at their injured reserve- 14 players, including 9 who were starters when they were injured, and an amazing 6 running backs on IR. It's tough to win with all those injuries, regardless of where you play.

Tunisia is one of the more stable African countries. It's had the same guy running it for a while, since the 80's I think. There's not much political opposition, as it tends to "disappear". I don't think they have the Jihadi problems that many other Muslim countries have had. I disagree Killgore- for book lovers, browsing in a big store like Borders or Barnes and Noble is a great way to spend time. While you certainly can find books on the 'net, there is still a hands-on quality to pulling one down, cracking the spine, and Bawney Fwanking a new book. (Last was sarc!)

The philosophy sections have been shrinking in all the retail stores, for some years.

There's not even a review of this book posted on Amazon. Remarkable. I've been a fan of Fodor for (nevermind) years, and wonder if he really has anything new to say, but he's still one of the leaders in the obscure (and lately unfashionable) area of philosophy of mind, and/or philosophy of psychology, and also philosophy of science. Book unavailable, and not reviewed? Maybe it's really bad, I guess, but even so.

Over the last two years, I think 90% of the independent and used book stores in Los Angeles have closed, some after many decades. And the economy will hurt whatever remains further (and yes, Borders has been under pressure for a year or three now, I just don't know if it's going critical yet).

It's a closing of one store. I got an email (from Borders, as I have their membership card) about it.

Ours doesn't beg she just stands there looking at you ---- waiting - waiting

I call it 'ignore mode'. It's still hard to resist that face though, I just look away.

That sounds like more fun than wandering around Wal-Mart looking at all the new stuff

LOL- 11 carries for 36 yards?

And LT for the season-
278 rushes 1014 yds 3.6 avg

LT is about to hit 30 yrs old, the "brick wall" for almost all great RB's.

Perhaps we'll meet then. Hopefully, in Iraq or Afghanistan (although it won't be viewing the Bamiyan Buddahs - thanks to the Taliban motherfuckers).

Turns out they only thought he was possessed because he worked in a deli and was speaking in tongues.

You have to go with the pros when you do an exorcism...Also always use factory approved parts.

36 yards and one TD.... :P

On a 1 yard run. Woo-hoo! I like LT. He seems like a level-headed guy unlike those scumbags Plaxico or Tank or Pacman. Unfortunately, the Chargers will regret not figuring out a way to keep Michael Turner. Sproles is good, but at 5'6" and maybe 180 lbs no way he's an everyday RB.

Check out Jerash, Jordan (before you hit Petra). Better than Rome itself. You will be blown away.

Petra itself is awesome as hell. Hint; avoid the camel ride and take a donkey instead. Don't even think of walking up there. You will take many many photos!
