Here’s an open thread to post nominations for LGF’s Idiotarian of the Year Award! This year, in the spirit of the stock market downturn and the economic belt-tightening, we’re cutting out the “Anti-Idiotarian” award and focusing on the red meat — the award for the person or group that most personifies the spirit of the “useful idiot.”

The Fiskie Award is a lifetime award, and previous winners are not eligible; so here are the past winners for reference:

*Representative Nancy Pelosi, for her trips to Syria and her mismanagement of the House.
*President-elect Barack Obama, his comments on Israel and Islam earlier this year, as well as his associations with Bill Ayres.
*Representative Barney Frank, for his role in the Freddie and Fannie collaspe.
*Senator Chris Dodd, ditto.
*Governor Rod Blagojevich, for his usefulness in getting Obama into the spotlight, and then being dropped like a dead fish when arrested. Useful and then useless in the same year.

And whether we're getting to peak oil or not, what about rising demand in China and India? Even if there's more oil, there's more buyers. That makes it a seller's market, once the inevitable recovery from this recession kicks in. When oil prices recover, and they will, conservation will be a practical, sensible way to save money, and wind, nuclear, and solar will look better than they look with oil below $40 per barrel.

And then there is the strategic side of things. Do we want to be in harsh competition with China to see who can give the most money to the Arabs and the Russians?

In some ways, the DI and DeWinter are the flip side, our side, of the coin that has bin Laden and AQ. Each is attempting to corrode its society from within. Granted, bin Laden and AQ are having far more success at this, particularly in places like Pakistan, but don't underestimate the ability of the others within our own society to do the same, given the opportunity. Remember, people laughed at a certain failed artist at one time as well. People also succumbed to passing laws against the very teaching of science that did set us back for a while, until the space race started in earnest. About 6 years, when I met him he was long out of the business and was Mayor of Palm Springs, and after he was elected congressman I had several very long conversations with him regarding the Bono copyright extension law. His daughter did record a couple of songs that I wrote, which sadly never were released, but I did get paid for them.
