Sometimes there’s a man... I won’t say a hero, ‘cause what’s a hero? But sometimes, there’s a man – and I’m talkin’ about the Dude here – sometimes, there’s a man, well, he’s the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. And that’s the Dude. In Los Angeles. And even if he’s a lazy man – and the Dude was most certainly that, quite possibly the laziest in Los Angeles County, which would place him high in the runnin’ for laziest worldwide – Sometimes there’s a man... Sometimes, there’s a man. Ah, I lost my train of thought here. But... aw, hell. I done introduced him enough.

Looks like civilians were able to shoot the evil Ropper after he stabbed Jews because of Israel ass kicking in Gaza strip.

Two people were stabbed near a synagogue in the settlement of Modi'in Illit (Kiryat Sefer) Monday morning.

The attacker was reportedly Arab. The victims' conditions were not immediately clear.

I would say you're reading between the lines... but there aren't any line to read between. You got more info?

Y'know, I saw the Big Lebowski when it first came out, and thought it mildly amusing. But to this day I can't figure out why it became a cult movie. What about it is cult-worthy? Eraserhead -- sure. Rocky Horror -- naturally. But The Big Lebowski? What gives?

I've quite a few films at "midnight screenings" -- Night of the Living Dead, Pink Flamingos, Eraserhead, Mad Max, even The Warriors and (strangely) Night at the Opera. The Big Lebowski seems too self-conscious to be in that category.

14 Pvt Bin Jammin  Sun, Dec 28, 2008 11:06:30pm

I also saw some really really pretentious cult movie midnight double bills -- like La Strada and Bicycle Thief; and then Jules et Jim and Breathless.

Pretentiousness overdose! Even if the films actually were pretty good. The audience, however -- intolerable.

Wow, CBS just said they are investigating the disappearance of a woman on the cruise ship I sailed on last summer. A woman in a white bathrobe was seen going overboard. That was my favorite thing, sitting or standing on that balcony in one of those robes. It seems like it would be hard to go over as the railing is pretty high.

40 zombie  Sun, Dec 28, 2008 11:18:22pm

The most engrossing and I would say most enjoyable "cult movie" viewing experience was once when a theatre showed six Zatoichi movies in a row (the good ones -- the ones with Shintaro Katsu). I sat through all six and loved every second of it. I still remember every scene from all six films!

For your "what the hell am I watching?" pleasure, let me present Doctor of Doom:

Women wrestlers, monsters, and mad doctors; in other words, two perfect motion pictures! Though he has already created a half man-half ape named Gomar, a mad doctor's experiments on female brain transplants have been failures. Why? "The brains come from totally uneducated women!" But the Doctor of Doom quickly zeroes in on "a stronger type of woman" in the form of gorgeous wrestling pals Gloria Venus and Golden Rubi, sending Gomar and his henchmen to abduct them. After Gloria throws acid in his face, the doc, disfigured and crazier than ever, puts Gomar's gorilla brain into the body of one of Gloria's galpals to create "Vendetta," a Superhuman Wrestling Woman whose goal is to kill Gloria in the ring!

WRT:

"The ‘Ought’ Decade (Goldberg, J.)
We lack a theme. Does anyone know what we’re supposed to call this decade?"

By the liver spots of Soros, Yes!

This decade, of which we have but a paltry year to raid, re-distrubiting our vanity, (with non-linear blogarithmic growth) so as even the most economically impaled of us can self-enjoin in the class-action of data democracy against the legacy interfaces of human data flow, the mentally frail media, the midnight (legislation) madness of the Congress of Baboons -- and the general cowardice of confrontation of crony-capitalism's cynical corruption -- with the improved tools provided by the increasing ubiquity of "internet access", is the decade whereby the most ambitious of composers could each ink their "Fanfare for the Common(ly Connected) Man" by tap of commodity USB-key and light of LCD over TCP/IP .

The Surfing Naughties, not for naught, evolved and merged the paths of open standards connectivity with off-the-shelf convenience and commodity parts.

Tool based man, is (for now), packet-switched man.*

*At least until next decade, where it's stone knives and bearskins,

Gipper wrote:
When you tweak the tail of the lion, expect to get hurt. Honestly, what does Israel expect given the brutal treatment of Palestinians they dish out?

That said, how do I respond to the second poster quoted below, idiot that he is...

I note several of the great ones logged in here tonight...any assistance at coherence would be greatly appreciated.

Well since none of the great ones responded I hope you'll accept the assistance of this mediocre one. To Gipper I would ask what brutal treatment the Israelis are inflicting on the Palistinians? He was rather vague in this regard.
Is he refering to the checkpoints between Israeli and Palestinian areas? Of course checkpoints are needed between the two areas. No government should allow unregulated traffic from a hostile neighbor to import guns and bombs. Heck tell him to complain to Egypt, it is easier to cross from Palestinian areas into Israel than it is to cross into Egypt.
Is he referring to the Israeli practice of stopping Pali ambulances? If so inform him that the Palestinians frequently use those ambulances to transport explosives.
Is he referring to Palestinian homes and schools? Inform him that these structures were being used to conceal weapons and tunnels used to resupply troops in direct violation of the Geneva convention which mandates clear separation of military and civilian structures.
Those are some of the most common whiney complaints from Palestinian terrorist sympathizers. If the Gipper's gripe is something else tell me and I'll try to address it.
Also inform this Gipper that Israel supplies all of the Palestinians' electricity, water, and medical aid (every wounded or sick Palestinian is treated in a Jewish hospital).
After that send them to Nekma's Troll Hammer, found I believe in LGF Resources.

You can actually make a dust explosion with flour. Saw an experiment description to do it too back in public school. All you need is a large tin, coffee or other previous use, the lid, a candle, a small tube, a funnel, and about 1/4 cup of flour.

They slammed the Israeli press for not agreeing with this representation of the facts."

Godzilla's FOOT comes smashing down on Bambi, flattening him, and the rest of the film is the credits, EVERYTHING was done by Reggie (Frump), can't recall his last name.

Mornin folks...get a load of this crap by one Rory McCarthy, Hamas combatant & al-Guardian journalist in Jerusalem:

In public the leaders of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas have been defiant in the face of Israeli military air strikes on Gaza. Khaled Meshal, the group's political leader, called for a "third uprising" among Palestinians. Other senior Hamas figures have vowed revenge and dismissed talk of reviving a ceasefire with Israel.

Those comments match public anger among Gazans, which seems to have done little to dent support for the movement that won Palestinian elections three years ago and then seized full control of Gaza last year. Some more pragmatic elements within Hamas had been arguing in favour of the ceasefire with Israel which began in June. But although the ceasefire brought a halt to Israeli military operations and stopped the rocket fire into southern Israel, it did little to ease Israel's tough economic siege of the Gaza Strip.

By the way, how many lizards wound up giving away gift cards or gift certificates as Christmas presents this year?

Doe those of you that did so, what was the ratio of plastic gift cards to paper certificates? For the paper ones, I keep thinking that they're going the way of the dodo....but there's some stubborn local resturants and retailers that are still hanging onto them.

They are going the way of the dodo. The shops that aren't most likely can't afford the equipment needed, though it's also possible paper hasn't created many issues for them, but I would disagree. I managed the gift certificates for a retail chain for a number of years, and when I heard we were switching to bar coded plastic over our paper certificate I could have cried for joy! Nasty headache, and not worth the time put into them usually. Cards make it nice and easy.

Good morning lizardia! Just some cultural gossip for you. Got an email from an American friend who has lived in Germany for a few years. He travels a good deal to Russia and it's former satelites for his job. A few blurbs you may find of interest:

some russians were asking me not to long ago, "who the hell is Obama?" To which I replied, "Alot of Americans are asking the same question." The Kremlin is not amused apparently. At least McCain had a track record.

I just drove back from Bavaria and the chatter on the radio was the usual anti-Israel schtick, however the words they used describing hamas were a bit more direct (eg. words like "islamic" "terror group") describing what they really are

That's what I thought, too....but it turns out one of the big, national retailers I assumed had long ago made the transition from paper to plastic (NAPA Auto Parts) gave us a paper certificate that looked almost like a cashier's check. Maybe it was just that one location, though....

Still, there's something to be said for paper....since it pretty unambiguously has the amount written right there for all to see, as opposed to a generic plastic card that may or may not have the amount you paid for it on there....

I walked into my local music store and ask the counter staff for a Gift certificate (paper) and the young lady maybe 22 to 25 years old gave me an incredulous look. Gift certificates or vouchers are almost extinct in Australia. I received a Gift card from an electronics store.

The most engrossing and I would say most enjoyable "cult movie" viewing experience was once when a theatre showed six Zatoichi movies in a row (the good ones -- the ones with Shintaro Katsu). I sat through all six and loved every second of it. I still remember every scene from all six films!

Are there Zatoichi films without Shintaro Katsu? Egads.

Trivia for Japanese film buffs. Katsu was the first choice to play Takeda Shingen in Kurosawa's epic Kagemusha. They fought and he quit/was fired. The role was played by the generally much more serious Nakadai Tatsuya. Many people wonder what it would have been like played by Katsu. Kurusawa was famous for his color renderings of scenes and those with Takeda have the original Katsu like figure in them.

IMO, Nakadai gave one of his two best performances in kagemusha, the other being what, also IMHO, is the best film in all Japanese cinema; Harakiri.

It's the same line of reasoning that many here in the US used before Afghanistan and before Iraq. "You cannot attack them, because you will get the Arab Street mad and make more terrorists than you can kill". The opposite, of course, is what Clinton did.....nothing. Well, that's not true, he did blow up a camel in an empty camp and he did kiss Yassar Arafat's ass for years. Looking at what happens when you kick the sh*t out of them as opposed to when you appease them, I think I will stick with the former rather than the later.

Look for the market to open on the up side as the overnight futures are up fractionally and the Nikkei and Hang Seng advanced as well.

There will be some volatility as investors dump the dogs from their portfolio and make some sales for tax loss reasons.

Another insightful opinion piece from Ralph Peters

244 BaseballMom57  Mon, Dec 29, 2008 4:56:18am

Well, hubby is at the specialty hospital. He's doing quite well - breathing OFF the vent for hours at a time, which they are happy with. They've backed him further off the sedation, so he's actually quite alert, but still not all there - it's like he's thrown back five shots of tequila in a row with beer chasers. He's very cranky because he can't talk. He tried to write, but that didn't work - he can't grip the pen and all he gets on the paper are squiggly lines and he gets aggravated.

They are telling us he'll meet with the speech therapist and physical therapist tomorrow to be evaluated. The speech therapist will teach him to speak with the trache. I guess it's a bit more complicated than just putting your finger over the opening. The physical therapist will start him on exercises to get his muscles back into shape so he can sit up properly and then walk.

As far as how long he'll be down there, we don't know. It all depends on his level of cooperation with the therapies. It could be two weeks, it could be four weeks. Or more. They are going to be giving him some happy meds as well - this all can be very depressing and aggravating, so they may give him pediatric doses of Haldol (whee!) or Ativan.

He finally understands where he is and that he missed Christmas. He was very upset to hear he will not be able to take our son to NAU on January 10. He turned his head and stared out the window when I told him that. I told him I would leave Flagstaff the morning of the 11th and drive down to see him then. He just nodded his head.

Thank you for all the prayers! Please keep at it. :-)

I agree with the anti-Semitic British press that "the true story is not being told by Israel."
Israel clings to the false hope that it is only Hamas and not also the population of Gaza who is the enemy.
In reality, the vast majority of the Arabs in Gaza voted for and support Hamas, and are therefore the enemy.
To admit this reality does not mean that Israel should target the entire population, but to pretend that merely killing Hamas will liberate the population and bring peace and quiet is a fantasy.
This is the reality which must be confronted, the sooner the better.
Israeli leaders should stop claiming that they have nothing against the general Arab population, and should instead tell the truth - the general population is guilty of complicity in terror and accountable for electing and supporting the Islamofascist terrorist entity.
So when Israeli leaders say that the objective is "to change the reality on the ground" they should admit that killing Hamas is only the first step. To truly change the reality on the ground the popular support for terror attacks must also be defeated, one way or the other.

I think dinging the owner of the blog is the same as telling him that his carpet is really shitty or that his sofa sucks.

If he invites me to come into a room with a shitty smelling carpet and to sit on a sucky sofa I have no problem telling him about it!

re: #245 Spare O'Lake

I will agree with you on that, for sure. Hamas was "elected", for whatever that is worth. I think, as a group, the Palis are doomed for failure. They have not improved their lot one bit in over 50 years. They are stuck in the "woe is me" and "we are victims" mode with no end in sight.

On the other hand, if Israel does not do something with Hamas, they are insane. I fear this is the beginning of the "death grip" Iran/Hezbollah/Hamas plans for Israel. Hamas was too brazen and too careless.....I hope they destroy every Hamas building and kill as many as those bastards as they can. But, when the smokes settles, you are correct in pointing out it will not change what's inside most of the Palis' hearts - pure unadulterated HATE.

Can you complain about the sofa if sitting on it may cause an involuntary vasectomy?

I don't think Charles is striving for an Obamaesque persona where the dear leader is always right. There is some stuff that I disagree with Charles on but when I take the totality of the blog, a couple issues are not worth me staying away. Charles is a big boy, he can take a down ding or two.

Red dawn was filmed in Las Vegas New Mexico. I attended the jr. high that was the high school in the movie.

Why didn't they film in Colorado where the story takes place?

It's one thing to down ding a comment Charles makes, it's another thing altogether to down ding an open thread with no topic to disagree with.

Sounds like the sofa in the house I rented in college

There are hundreds of reasons the filming local of a movie is chosen. The most common is costs (states/ cities charge the production companies per diem)

re: #260 MandyManners PLus it's kinda hard for Russia to invade Colorado from mexico without crossing New Mexico.

Good morning, Lizards. Front page story in the Chicago Tribune says that all of the Palistinian deaths will make it tough to restart the peace process.
Hmmm, wonder who they blame?

Send them an e-mail. Ask them if all the Dresden deaths or all the Hiroshima deaths made it easier or tougher to bring peace to the world circa 1945

Sports Note:

Open note to Jerry Jones, owner and self appointed GM of the Dallas Cowboys: If you want your team to be any good again, your team needs you to get the heck off the sidelines and go up to the owners booth where you belong and stay there. Stop looking over the coach's shoulder and stop playing at being the GM.

Own the team, stay out of the football end of it, period.

re: #269 opnion
This small number of Pali deaths might hurt the peace process but let this little altercation continue and a few hundred or god forbid thousand more Pali deaths will start netting results.

275 3 wood  Mon, Dec 29, 2008 5:23:32am

Sports note #2:

Congrats to those football teams that made it into the playoffs. Condolences to the Detroit Lions for losing every game this year. But at least you will draft early enough to get a game changer. Miami went fro, being awful to division Champ in 1 year, you can too.

On the other hand, you have the Chicago Bears, who are now officially in "Pro-football hell". They are a mediocre aging team on the way down, not good enough to sneak into the playoffs, but not bad enough to draft early enough to get a difference maker in the 1st round. I'm already picking the Bears for 5-11 next year. They need, in no particular order, a safety who can cover and hit, a pass rushing defensive end, a linebacker, a run stopping defensive tackle, an offensive left tackle, a right tackle, a center, 3 wide receivers who can get open and catch, and a QB.

re: #275 3 wood

Little condolences over here, please? The Pats went 11-5 and won't go to the playoffs. The Chargers go 8-8 and win their flippin' division. I hate math.
All in all, not a bad season for the Pats (considering you-know-who was out all year), but the playoffs would have been icing on the cake.

the chicago trib has a long history of anti semitism the one thing that stayed the same when it went from a cons. to being a liberal paper.
