Bias? I don’t see any groveling, fawning bias, do you? Hawaiian ’shaka’ greeting comes natural to Obama.
The president-elect, looking uber-cool with his White Sox baseball cap on backwards, flipped the shaka to a crowd of about 30 people as he left a gym on a Marine Corps base on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, where he is vacationing.

Now the president-elect appears increasingly conscious of the confines of his new position, bristling at the routine demands of press coverage and beginning to chafe at boundaries that are only going to get smaller.
Obama even took the unusual step Friday morning of leaving behind the pool of reporters assigned to follow him, taking his daughters to a nearby water park without them. It was a breach of longstanding protocol between presidents (or presidents-elect) and the media, that a gaggle of reporters representing television, print and wire services is with his motorcade at all times.
Then when reporters finally caught up with Obama at Koko Marina Paradise Deli and he acknowledged them for one of few times since arriving in Hawaii last Saturday, he sounded resigned.
After ordering a tuna melt on 12-grain bread, Obama approached reporters and placed his hand on the shoulder of pool reporter Philip Rucker of The Washington Post, who was scribbling away in his notebook.
“You don't really need to write all that down,” Obama said.
All presidents and would-be presidents struggle with “the bubble” – the security detail and the always-there reporters that impose barriers to any spontaneous interaction with the outside world.
But Obama seems to be struggling particularly hard, particularly early.

Of some note:
Went west on I-30 to Dallas, then south on I-35 to San Marcos on Christmas day after we fed the cows, from Greenville to Dallas passed 3 of the pickup's towing cars loaded down full of stuff and Mexicans going back south, on the longer section from Dallas to San Marcos, 15 of them

You all know by now that the situation in Gaza has gone from intolerable to even worse. A tiny open-air prison with 1.5 million inhabitants, created by border closings and a near total blockade, is now being bombed by the Isreali Army using US military equipment. The humanitarian disaster that accompanies any bombing is aggravated by the lack of equipment and supplies at the hospitals that are swamped by the wounded.

I'm torn between hoping he goes totally "gangsta" on us, launches a campaign to remake the U.S. in his own weird image (ala' Carter), and gets his party turfed out of control of Congress in '10 and himself laughed off the stage in '12, and hoping he tries to continue his "hide in a closet during votes" Senate tenure policy now that he's in the Big Chair, and winds up as an even bigger laughingstock than Bill Clinton did. The drawback to the latter is that Bill managed to hang on for eight years.
I'm not sure the world can take eight years of The Exalted One's policies.

Yes, but as I pointed out earlier, his pinky doesn't look extended in the photo (IMHO) So either the editor attached the wrong photo to the story, or the writer didn't know what the Shaka symbol really looked like

They want windmills and solar cells and light rail and electric buses- any money spent on roads (for those eeevill gas-guzzlers and semis) and improving conventional electrical power generation and delivery (which involves actually generating electricity) is a "threat to Holy Mother Gaia" and will not be permitted.
Look for The One next year to be telling people in the Great Lakes states that power failures are all their fault for "not conserving enough".

Yes it definitely appears to be a small debris fire in an unburnt building. Could have been a pile of trash or something that was already there that they lit for the picture. My question is there are definitely buildings being destroyed by the Israelis. Why stage a picture like this? Do the real targets show something they don't want the rest of the world to see.

There is only one other legitimate reason to wear a ball cap the wrong way around- namely, to clear optics, as in mounted binoculars on a ship's flying bridge, or the exit bell of a sharpshooter's 'scope. Two other things The One would not be caught doing, I'm sure, to avoid alienating his "core constituency" of touchy-feeley, bong-sucking, rainbows n' unicorns n' butterfly-believing overage flower children.
I've often wondered if it is possible for one person to make a laughingstock of an entire nation. It looks like we may be about to find out the hard way.

The silence from the US, Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia is a big green light for Israel to pound Hamas to oblivion.
DM Barak, running in an election, declared Israel's war today against Hamas "a fight to the finish." This is really bad news for Hamas. Especially when Israel just bombed half their tunnels with deep penetrator bombs and Egypt is blocking access to the Sinai. Hamas is cut off and facing a completely enraged Israel. They should have released Shalit and stopped firing rockets when they had the chance. But then Hamas would not be Hamas and not backed by Iran to the tune of a couple billion in military aid and assistance. Barak, unlike his predecessor, is not a complete military imbecile, ffar from it, he is a very accomplished general, seeking personal and political redemption from Israeli voters as to himself- Barak deeply recognizes the his failings as PM and most especially with respect to his disastrous pullout from south Lebanon in 2000. Barak understands victory and he understands voters. This spells doom for Hamas. Hamas is not coming out of this war in power over Gaza, their little Somalia on the Mediterranean is over; Israel's military policy is regime change and the people to do it are in charge with all green lights to go all the way.
Someone, not Israel, is going to have to govern Gaza, PA President Abbas, if he can keep a lid on things on the West Bank, may just find himself back in power in Gaza with Egyptian "help.". After Hamas' miserable economy-destroying government and Israeli reoccupation, a reunified, PA under the relatively less corrupt PA PM American Professor Fayaz, will seem like an Athenian Golden Age to Gazans who have been more starved of life and opportunity than from actual hunger. Most importantly, this will begin the governmental interdependence between Israelis and Palestinians that is the only viable and true path to peace. It may seem odd to talk of such things while the bombs are flying but, the whole point fighting a war is to get the peace you want- how you fight the war determines the peace you actually get.
And THAT brings us to the elephant in the room, Iran. Senior Iranian psychopaths are already calling for the entire Islamic world to wage Jihad against Israel. You can't call Israel a "stinking rotting corpse," refer to Jews as "vermin" and then let said corpses and vermin kick your "heroic and steadfast" proxy's butt all across the region. If you are unelected dictators, it looks bad and undermines your regime. But doing nothing risks their strategy of having The One tie Israel's hands while they get the Bomb. For the Ayatollahs, this war could not have come at a worse time. It forces them to make choices. They really liked having 250,000 Jews in range of their Gaza rockets; just like their beloved Hitler, they adore the chance to indiscriminately shell civilians and Jewish civilians are, as we all know, double points.
So the Iranians have to do something or risk losing Hamas altogether but if they do too much they risk Israel widening the war, possible US intervention, and losing Hezbollah too. If Israel is willing to destroy Hamas, Israel is willing to destroy Hezbollah and the Syrian regime too. Does Iran believe that Hezbollah defeated Israel in 2006? If they do, they will attack believing international pressure will stop the war before Israel goes to far or they can use enough rocket to stop an Israeli victory. Syria, which had, up until days ago, been in brokered peace talks with Israel via Turkey, Assad gets Hobson's choice, bet the whole hog on Iran, because if Israel goes for victory and Syria is in the war, Assad's regime will be destroyed. My bet is, if escalation comes Syria will come in with Iran, praying the war stays in Lebanon and the UN can prevent the regime from destruction. You have to have big stones to play in this poker game.

Israel must reject all calls for truces and ceasefires and demand nothing less than the unconditional surrender of the terrorist group Hamas.
The Palestinians must taste the bitter sting of defeat and watch the terror masters frogmarched. They brought this war upon themselves, and must learn the bitter lessons thereof.
Israel must reject international pressure and remind the UN that all casualties inflicted in this war are the fault of no one but Hamas - but for Hamas firing all those kassams and mortars at Israel, Israel would not have attacked.
Hamas fired those missiles and rockets because it does not accept Israel's righ to exist, and has used Gaza as their launching pad. They hide behind civilians and engage in attacks on civilians to spread terror and inflict casualties on Israel.
That Hamas hasn't killed more people with those missiles and rockets is a miracle (and the majority of those killed and injured in the recent attacks are actually fellow Palestinians). Forget the numbers injured, and know only that it is the murderous intent to kill and maim that counts. Thousands of kassams and mortars were fired - each with the intent to kill and maim. That they were less than successful only means that Hamas doesn't have the sophistication to kill more with those weapons. And Israel should be thankful for that (of course, it was the fact that those attacks didn't kill and maim more - and far sooner that led Israel to hold off on going after Hamas until the latest major barrages).

Grandparents will live with their grown children and help raise their grandchildren — even at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Neighbors are going to meal share and carpool and child care for each other and maybe even rent out parts of homes to other families. Less meat, more beans. Might be better for you anyway. Less indoor gym workouts and more walking, more park time, more family outdoor time.

I suspect that Israel hit them now precisely because January 20 was looming on the horizon. They no doubt concluded that any POTUS who regards Jimmy Carter as a brilliant diplomatist in the MidEast could not be relied on to look at the situation on the ground and see it for what it is as opposed to relying upon "progressive"/Arabist fabulation. Hence, the "least worst" alternative would be to present said POTUS with a fait' accompli before he was sworn in.
Plus, the Israeli people were getting fed up with repeatedly having to go to funerals while the criminals were alternating between rocket launches and "happy fire", plus the odd homicide bomber. There comes a point at which you have to say, "enough is enough", and accept that;
A. Your "neighbors" (all of whom want you dead for the "crime" of not being them) will continue to be hateful- and to be fawned over by the Western press and intelligentsia; and
B. Said press and "intelligentsia" will never be satisfied until you cease to exist, anyway. Because in their circles, hating you, and all those like you, is "a social distinction and a negotiable bond", as John Barron referred to the trendy Communism of the American upper classes in the period prior to the Hiss-Chambers case (in None Dare Call It Treason). And like that gilt-edged Marxism, it's "one of those things" that "everyone who is anyone" holds as a gospel truth, but that they never talk about in front of "the help"- i.e., the rest of us, aka the Great Unwashed.
Seen in this light, Israel's reaction was not "merely sensible"- it was overdue.

My point about Obama needing to pick up his own tab needs expanding. This guy has gotten a free ride for years. He got $14 million for his probably ghost written book in a deal that I think smells worse than what got Newt Gingrich in trouble. It could have been a shell for a payoff. He had his house bought for him by Rezko. His schools were paid for by who, maybe foreign money? If he is not a gov't employee for a month and he wants to work out then let him pay. The Secret Service are there for security, not to carry bags, arrange theater tickets or serve lunch.

Excellent analysis, and I would go further and point out that the Egyptians have pretty much put their chips on the table and are backing Israel's actions, and made the larger play against Iran.
Egypt's foreign minister has called out Iran and Hizbullah, noting that Hizbullah all but declared war on Egypt. That will not stand, and Egypt will let Israel deal with Hizbullah. Egypt's playing the power broker here - not Saudi Arabia (although I believe the Saudis are also doing plenty behind the scenes to undermine Iran and their proxies in Hamas and Hizbullah). Egypt couldn't really care about Israel, but they do have issues with the mad mullah Shi'ites in Iran.

The Prime Minister was interviewed over the weekend and stated that Israel warned the Palestinian civilians to leave areas where THEY KNOW Hamas hides out to avoid being harmed. Israel knows Hamas hides behind/around civilians. Warning the civilians is brilliant. Kinda takes the sting out of Hamas claiming civilians are being targeted.
The Palestinian people in Gaza are in the same position as the hostages their "leaders" used to take to make demands of the West (for the release of terrorists, etc.). When rescue ops went in, said hostages tended to find out in no uncertain terms the true meaning of the SpecOps axiom; It Sucks To Be A Hostage.
The difference being, of course, that barring Stockholm Syndrome, hostages generally do not assist their captors even under duress, let alone voluntarily. I'm not sure the same can be said for the majority of Palestinians.

Well I give them a few props for at least showing some common sense. Still, it is their neighbor too and there seems to be a steady effort to use Egypt as the backdoor from Gaza. Hamas is not coming out of this war in power over Gaza, their little Somalia on the Mediterranean is over; Israel's military policy is regime change and the people to do it are in charge with all green lights to go all the way.
Someone, not Israel, is going to have to govern Gaza, PA President Abbas, if he can keep a lid on things on the West Bank, may just find himself back in power in Gaza with Egyptian "help."
That may be the implicit goal, putting PA back in charge, but I have not heard Israeli or Egyptian or even PA spokesman say it yet - have you? Do you really expect Hamas to relinquish rule voluntarily? Do you expect the good people of Gaza to rise up and seize power?

All those who are right now bewailing the fate of the 'innocent civilians' in Gaza are the same who have been telling us repeatedly that Hamas is not a terrorist organisation, but the democratically elected government of Gaza.

". The story is long, carries over into the inside.
Inside, on page 5 - a short article, no pix, about how missiles from Gaza have sent an Israeli hospital into underground bomb-shelter facilities.

morning real. I was on for a short while this morning and posted some thoughts emailed by a friend who is working in Germany but travels all over (mostly) eastern Europe, including Russia. So I'll repost, as some might find it interesting.
some russians were asking me not to long ago, "who the hell is Obama?" To which I replied, "Alot of Americans are asking the same question." The Kremlin is not amused apparently. At least McCain had a track record.
I just drove back from Bavaria and the chatter on the radio was the usual anti-Israel schtick, however the words they used describing hamas were a bit more direct (eg. words like "islamic" "terror group") describing what they really are.

Follow up on a couple of points made above- Iran's ascendancy in the region challenges both the existence if not he little legitimacy they have of ALL the US aligned regimes in the region.

Been trying to catch up on this thread for over 40 mins-concluded it was impossible. So I'll throw out 2 items.
1.) God/Yaweh instructed the Israelites to "smite their enemies hip and thigh, leave no stone standing one on another". I realize that to follow his instructions today would be frowned on-called genocide; but he knew what he was talking about, and I think he meant it for now.
2.) the UN insisted on a nice WIDE demilitarized zone in Korea-maybe that needs done here. Clear cut same, salt it, and mine it-between both the West bank/Gaza borders with Israel-and it comes out of those territories, not Israeli land

I expect Israel to move in and wipe out Hamas ripping them out by the roots. Unlike the previous time when the PA government tolerated and even abetted Hamas, when Hamas started tossing PLO operatives off tall buildings in Gaza, that tolerance ended and Hamas became an enemy of the old line Palestinian power structure. The PA has done a lot of damage to Hamas to prevent them from taking root in the West Bank and they will do worse in Gaza when they come back. Nor has the PA been shy about ratting out Hamas operations and letting the IDF wipe out harder to destroy viper nests.
The thing to remember about war is it tends to change things permanently. In this case, this war will permanently change Hamas' existence. They may continue as an underground movement; these are seasoned Islamofascists and they will stay alive in whatever way they can, through charities and mosques if that is the only avenue they have. But they will no longer be able to publicly function or operate and that will be a blessing to all.

Yeah, but you can never really cast away part of your heritage, only supress in and hide in lies and circumlocution. My ex-wife was part black. She was a sicle-cell carrier. Her mother hated that to the point where she refused to get her other children tested for it.
It just couldn't be, you have to understand. Genetics takes a backseat to other, more "important" considerations.
Obama's rejecting of his white ancestry doesn't make it go away. It hasn't changed his DNA. If you really think about what it means, though, you have to draw the conclusion that he hates white people. So much so that he is willing to ignore half his ancestry (though, I admit the guy has ample reason to reject the woman uterus that brought him into the world)
We're in for a "fun" ride for the next four years. It'll make Space Mountain look like a walk in the park.

Franky, Mandy, I'll take a Liberty and worry about being one of 600 who die from salmonella every year.
Every regulation is an infringement on liberty. Sure health food regulations SOUND good, but now they are telling us what we can and can't eat. In areas they are attempting to spread smoking bans to private homes. 20 years ago when smoking bans started I was one who said, watch out fast food is coming, and got laughed at.
I'm all for common sense food safety, but it's no longer common sense.
We can no longer modify the behavior of government, it needs to be disassembled and rebuilt.
If someone who sells fruitcake by word of mouth out of his home got someone sick, that would spread by word of mouth pretty quick.

Just one correction. There would be great joy in the peace which would follow a conventional thorough military victory. Such joy is nothing to feel guilty about, and there is nothing in Judaism or the Bible which says otherwise.
There is however little joy in the long string of incomplete military victories which have characterized Israeli history ever since 1948.
Once and for all, the Israelis must have the strength and resolve to finish the job of completely defeating the enemy in Gaza up to and including the Israelis dictating the terms of peace and the losers unconditionally agreeing to those terms.

My bet is on Barak, the initial strikes have brutalized Hamas showing that IDF CinC Ashkenazi is going all Schwartzkopf on Hamas without restraint. If you are going to fight a war, GO ALL THE WAY. Every regulation is an infringement on liberty. Sure health food regulations SOUND good, but now they are telling us what we can and can't eat. In areas they are attempting to spread smoking bans to private homes. 20 years ago when smoking bans started I was one who said, watch out fast food is coming, and got laughed at.
I'm all for common sense food safety, but it's no longer common sense.
We can no longer modify the behavior of government, it needs to be disassembled and rebuilt.
If someone who sells fruitcake by word of mouth out of his home got someone sick, that would spread by word of mouth pretty quick.
Especially if someone got killed.

There usually are good reasons for most regulations, especiall food.
In WA State WISHA (WA Industrial Safety and Health Adminstration) mandates in commercial kitchens the floors be non-skid. The Health Dept. mandates commercial kitchen floors be smooth so they can easily be sanitized.

As a firefighter OSHA came in for our Federal Safety certification. Note, their are not enough working hours for a firefighter in a year and most firefighters work 2500-3000 hours, when a 40 hour week is 2000. There are not enough work hours in a year for a firefighter to maintain all the state and federally required certification. Never mind a firefighters JOB, if all he did was train, he'd still be in violation.
You see after a firefighter gets hurt invariable the FD gets fined 10 to 20 thousand for lack of training. Because the a firefighter didn't get in the required certification in Hand Tools!

Yes, good reason. Each and every regulation had a good reason for being implemented. That does not preclude cross purposes, or the other problems you note.

It's about the overall state of regulations in society. Congress or local legislative bodies pass a law saying "make food safe." Sounds good, but it's the bureaucrats with little oversight write the regulations.
OSHA recently tried to bureaucratically change the rules for ammunition so that it would be nearly impossible to store it at home.
I'm not against food safety, it's the over reaching of unconstitutional bureaucratic REGULATIONS that is taking more of our liberties than anything else.
The fruitcake is just an example.
