Hamas Bringing Back Crucifixion

Middle East | Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 12:24:50 pm PST

In her Jerusalem Post column, Caroline Glick mentions a piece of news we haven’t seen reported elsewhere:

Both Iran and its Hamas proxy in Gaza have been busy this Christmas week showing Christendom just what they think of it. But no one seems to have noticed.

On Tuesday, Hamas legislators marked the Christmas season by passing a Shari’a criminal code for the Palestinian Authority. Among other things, it legalizes crucifixion.

Hamas’s endorsement of nailing enemies of Islam to crosses came at the same time it renewed its jihad.

I can't really say what I'm thinking. In the end, I guess it boils down to questioning why we let this vermin continue stealing our precious oxygen. re: #29 goddessoftheclassroom

Crucifixion was a Roman thing. I don't believe it was ever a Christian method of execution.

Crucifixion in the Qur'an
The Qur'an mentions crucifixion several times. In Surah 7:124, Firaun (Arabic for Pharaoh) says that he will crucify his chief wizards. Also, Surah 12:41 mentions Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) saying that the king (the current ruler of the land he was stranded in) would crucify one of his prisoners.

'And the wizards fell down prostrate, crying: "We believe in the Lord of the Worlds, The Lord of Musa and Harun". Firaun said: "Ye believe in Him before I give you leave! Lo! this is the plot that ye have plotted in the city that ye may drive its people hence. But ye shall come to know! Surely I shall have your hands and feet cut off upon alternate sides. Then I shall crucify you every one."' Surah 7:120-124
'O my two fellow-prisoners! As for one of you, he will pour out wine for his lord to drink; and as for the other, he will be crucified so that the birds will eat from his head. Thus is the case judged concerning which ye did inquire.' Surah 12:41
In Surah 5:33, The Qur'an mentions crucifixion as a form of punishment for those who fight Allah and his messenger.

'The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land: that is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter.' Surah 5:33
Because of this verse in the Qur'an crucifixion is still one of the Hadd punishments in the Islamic Republic of Iran (Iran's Islamic Criminal Law, Article 195)[33].

I don't know.....
The early Muslims didn't have tall buildings but some imams say they homosexuals should be thrown off semi-tall buildings so they writhe in pain as they slowly die after the fall.
AND, early Muslims didn't have construction cranes but they quickly figured out that if you raise a person in a noose at the very slowest speed they suffocate painfully and more slowly than a quick fall from a horse under a tree or a trapdoor would do.

Thanks to the UN, which has a full fledged interest in maintaining that status quo as it is a jobs program for the UN, rather than admitting the obvious that they are not refugees. They are Gazans living in Gaza. Period. They aren't going to replace Israelis living in Israel, though the UN and the Palestinian terrorists will do their worst.

A few Hamas leaders need to be found dead under mysterious circumstances.

I hope Mossad s working on this, seeing that the circumstances have changed so much in the last three days!

There was a funny joke on a British TV show once. Guy was suicide prone. Said he even tried crucifying himself, but couldn't find a way to get that last nail in.

From Red Dwarf; "I tried working at a suicide prevention hot line one afternoon. I had three people I talked to commit suicide and one of those was a wrong number."

The first problem is that he is dealing with Smith and Wesson. I'm still mad at them for their voluntary agreement with the Clinton Administration. Besides, they are awful damn pricey for what you are getting. But all guns have gone way up in price over the last twenty years or so. They may have out-performed the Stock Market, especially with the recent sell-off.

And .40s are over-rated. Either a .45 or a 9mm can perform as well. If you want capacity, then buy a high-cap .45. If recoil is bothering you, get a 9mm. A .40 is just an unnecessary round.

Then there is the new .500 Smith and Wesson Magnum...

The ancient Egyptians were more into impalement. In my forages into the time prior to the Ptolemies, I know of no reference to crucifixion. Their standard execution of grave robbers was to take them out into a nice hot area and play bug and pin with them. Not a nice way to go.

There is a movie on YeTube with someone playing with a .60 gun. But I wouldnt recommend that to anyone who wants to actually survive a gunfight. The kickback on that little toy can wound you more than it does damage to the other person. Sure the other person will have a great big hole. But you'll be three feet further back with the gun protruding from your gut.

Never mess with a gansta rapper raptor that has a big gun and bad attitude.

An old friend was at an indoor range a few years ago, and a group of gang bangers came in with their pistols. They were all about that side hand crap they saw on TV and blasted away at their targets - about 10 yds or so. Not a single hit. Moved 'em up to 5 yds, blasted away (one guy with the damn pistol upside down). Not a single hit.

Brought the targets up to just about where you could reach out and touch them, blasted away (side hand, upside down, you name it), and barely got any hits at all.

My friend says he decided not to tell them what they were doing wrong.

I used to have a Russian made SKS when their were M15s, AKM, and even Uzi's available at the local gun store. What is available now? I was thinking about the scoped M14. (if i recall again, they were known as the M24 or M21. I forget witch) Semi auto is fine. With that, you can reach and touch someone, if needed.

The one I saw was "used", but almost brand new. You could just tell that someone had bouthgt it, and then shot it, and said Goddamn! when they did and decided that they didn't need that in their arsenal after all.

The last word in cannons goes to the whole new Metal Storm range. Since the metal storm stuff works on an electrical as opposed to a mechanical mechanism, it means that the reliability of the shot goes up and the recoil aint so bad. But its too new to be fully implemented. There are some great YouTube videos that show what its all about. Massive firepower with almost no reload wait time.

I've been calling for aerosolized pigs blood for years. No one ever listens to me.

Because it's a completely fucking stupid idea, that's why, and non-stupid people should stop perpetuating it.

Look, SUPPOSE for the sake of argument that the first group of jihadis given the pig-blood treatment really were reduced to sniveling submission (as you assume they'd be) because they feared that dying while covered with liquefied haram would be a one-way ticket to Hell. Well, fine -- that's a few dozen or hundred Islamic fanatics defeated and captured with minimal effort on our part.

But what happens when word of this gets out? I'll tell you what happens: jihad-preaching imams the world over issue fatwas reassuring the Islamic hordes that "martyrs" whose bodies are tainted by pork-bombs still go straight to Paradise, pigs' blood notwithstanding. And thus if the infidels want to waste all that perfectly good pigs' blood re-enacting the prom scene from Carrie on a grand scale, it shouldn't deter jihadis one bit from their divine mission.

So what's your plan THEN, genius?

Sheesh.

The .44 Magnum don't need no steroids!

It all depends on whether you just want to make a hole or you want to kill a person. The preferred weapon of assassins is actually a 0.22 borer tip simply because it bounces around and does a heck of a lot of damage before it exits. Most hand cannons 0.38 and up are designed for the other side of things where you may have motion or a crowd working towards you. Because it stops them dead in their tracks. Literally.

Sheesh.

Are you capable of having a discussion (making suggestions) without screaming and attacking? WTF? I don't even want a response.

re: #320 Occasional Reader

The problem was with the paper Enfield musket cartridge:

The infamous cartridge difficulties combined religious sensibilities with technological change. For years the EIC had relied on a simple but inaccurate smooth bore musket. It was decided to introduce a more accurate muzzle loading Enfield Rifled Musket. One way to speed up the loading process was the introduction of a paper cartridge with the bullet sitting on the exact quantity of powder needed. The loader was required to bite open this paper cartridge to expose the powder. The original cartridges were made in Britain and had been covered in tallow to help protect the cartridge from the elements. Unfortunately the tallow had been made from a beef and pork fat. To the British users of these cartridges, this made no big deal. Hindu and Muslim users were horrified at the defiling fat.

uh, isn't crucifixion a western/Christian thing? or is this a Islamic concept too?

Crucifixion, as part of the punishments criminal law can mete out, is a Roman thing. It's the Roman Empire's version of drawing and quartering. But who are we to call that barbaric? These punishments were invented in our very own cultural tradition.

They're just learning from us. In a thousand years, maybe, they'll catch up to where we were when we realized that such punishments were icky and excessive. Plain old firing squads suffice to kill a man who needs killing, and do it with a modicum of dignity. Wanton cruelty doesn't deter: a man who is willing to die for his cause isn't going to much care how messy his end is. Dead is dead. Wanton cruelty serves only to degrade the people who mete it out. Reveling in cruelty is a weakness as well as a sin. It diminishes that necessary and prudent respect for the enemy without which complacency must set in.

They have a lot to learn.

Iranian group recruits volunteers to fight Israel

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — A group of influential conservative Iranian clerics launched an online registration drive on Monday seeking volunteers to fight against Israel in response to its air assault on the Gaza Strip. About 3,550 people registered Monday with the Combatant Clergy Society's Web site. The weeklong online campaign gives volunteers three options on ways they can fight Israel: military, financial and propaganda.

The group, which has considerable political and economic power in Iran, did not provide further details on the program including how it would contact the volunteers or implement the program.

Have you already discussed Bill Roggio's fears Israel is making the same mistake as two years ago?

from today's weeklystandard.com blog:

Israel Repeating Failed Hezbollah-Lebanon Strategy In Gaza?

After the expiration of a "truce" with Hamas, terror groups in Gaza pounded the Israeli south with rocket attacks. The Israeli government has responded forcefully, with waves of air strikes targeting Hamas's security infrastructure. More than 280 Palestinians, mostly Hamas members, have been killed in strikes on more than 100 security compounds. Hamas's security chief and several other senior leaders were killed in the attacks.

Hamas has vowed to attack Israel with suicide bombers and other means. More than 80 rockets have been launched into the Negev despite the Israeli air offensive.

Within 24 hours of the assault, Israel already appears to be over relying on air power and avoiding the more difficult task of conducting a ground assault. Per Reuters:

Israeli military affairs commentators said the Israeli offensive did not appear to be aimed at retaking the Gaza Strip or destroying the territory's Hamas government -- ambitious goals that could prove difficult and politically risky to achieve ahead of Israel's February 10 parliamentary election.

Instead, they said, Israel -- after an air bombardment on Saturday -- wanted to strengthen its deterrence power and force Hamas into a new truce that would lead to a long-term halt to cross-border rocket salvoes.

Israel essentially followed the same failed strategy in Lebanon against Hezbollah in the summer of 2006. After two soldiers were captured by Hezbollah forces in a cross-border raid into northern Israel, the Olmert government launched an air campaign, convinced it could degrade and destroy Hezbollah's rockets in Beirut and the South, take out Hezbollah's leadership, and force them to release the soldiers.

The Israeli offensive is widely recognized as a strategic failure. Israel was always constrained by time; they could not indefinitely conduct operations inside Lebanon without serious international implications. The Olmert government's failure to act quickly and decisively allowed Hezbollah to maintain the initiative.

Hezbollah launched thousands of rockets into northern Israel, despite a blanket of air cover by the Israeli Air Force. The Israeli Defense Forces cautiously entered southern Lebanon only after it became apparent that the air campaign could only achieve limited results, and by then it was too late as the operation was winding down. The Israeli military never meaningfully pursued Hezbollah's infrastructure in the Bekaa Valley.

The Israeli-Hezbollah War left Hezbollah standing, stronger than ever. They stood up to Israel as no Arab regime has, and survived. Within two years, Hezbollah has become a part of the Lebanese government.

The Olmert government faces tough choices. There is little support for the reoccupation of Gaza, which is the only way Israel can ensure the rocket attacks will cease. The government cannot countenance the continuous rocket and mortar attacks against Israeli civilians in the South. But one thing is clear: If the Olmert government fails to act decisively against Hamas in Gaza, it should expect results similar to those obtained in Lebanon.

There were some LiveLeak vids about that showed an Islamic execution via impaling. The condemned was made to kneel face down, a large wooden pole was inserted in to the rectum. Then the condemned is brought upright by several men. The weight of the condemned carries the body downward on to the poie. The pointy end of the pole exits out of the left collarbone area. The pole is then inserted in to a hole in the ground, with the condemned dangling and twitching.

re: #41 zombie

Exactly. What proves this is intentional: they PURPOSELY revived a way of killing people that is not even part of their own tradition, specifically because it is the most horrifying thing to Christians. It's no accident.

Actually, The Prophet snapped it up from the beginning when he relates the story of Joseph.

"O my two companions of the prison! As to one of you, he will pour out the wine for his lord to drink: and as for the other, he will be crucified, and the birds will eat from his head. Thus is the case judged concerning which you both did enquire." [Surah 12:41]

The Prophet later says that Pharaoh, in the time of Moses, says

Be sure I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will cause you all to die on the cross [Surah 7:124, see also Surahs 26:49 and 20:71]

There is _no_ archaeological record of this. In fact, the Egyptians often used impalement. Crucifixion is most likely an invention of the Romans...it was surely they who brought it to the Middle East.

Crucifixion was a Roman thing. I don't believe it was ever a Christian method of execution.

It wasn't just a Roman thing, even though most people in Western civilizations know of one particular Roman execution that make people believe it was of Roman origin. It was used by Persians, Greeks, Carthaginians, and Macedonians as well as the Romans. Crucifixion was practiced by the Japanese before and during the Tokugawa Shogunate. The Koran has several references to crucifixion in the Surahs, and can be used as punishment in Iran, Sudan, and Yemen, so seeing Hamas allowing it is nothing surprising.

Just following up on my post #270 on why the "bullets dipped in lard or pig blood" idea is so absurd:

While it's true that pigs are especially detested in Muslim culture, ALL blood is regarded as impure and ritually contaminating -- including human blood. (This doesn't mean that Muslims can't be surgeons, it just means that Muslim surgeons are obliged to be particularly diligent in ritually cleansing the blood from themselves prior to praying.)

Now, given Islam's long history of warfare, does anyone really think that Islamic theologians have never ever addressed the question of what happens to mujahideen who get infidel blood all over themselves during a glorious battle for Allah, and then die before having had the opportunity to "ritually decontaminate"?

And does anyone think that Islamic theologians, having considered this question, would've said, "oh, sorry -- if you get killed before washing the kafir blood off your hands, you're goin' straight to Hell, just like your mama said"?

And if being covered with human blood that spurted out of an infidel doesn't disqualify a "martyr" from Paradise, why on Earth would a squirtgun filled with pig's blood be a deterrent?

F*cking hypocrites of the world unite-under the banner of pro-Palestinianism which really = JEW HATE.

CBC (or maybe CNN), was interviewing a woman from the ISM who was supposedly in Rafah in the Gaza Strip, who had just witnessed a strike at the end of her street.

Seeing her given any sort of credence in the media really roiled my blood. I could never bring myself to believe a word coming out of the woman's mouth, and the news anchor kept trying to console her for "what must have been a most harrowing, and unimaginable" experience.

You can get a semi-automatic M-14. Springfield Armory makes the best M-14 type rifles in semi-auto. If you want to, they have full auto available.

I like H&Ks and FALs in 7.62. There are also AR-10 rifles available from Armalite.

It really depends on what you want to spend. Even low end 7.62s are going to run a grand or so. I wouldn't recommend, for example, a Chinese M-14. They are cheaper, but I've heard that they have problems with their receivers. In general, you get what you pay for.

Crucifixion was a sophisticated way of killing people because it was slow and because the condemned's own weight is what causes suffocation, the exposure just adds to the suffering. Mutilating would cause death to come faster which would be merciful. The Roman who stabbed Jesus was being humane. The Arabs were more primitive and seem like the stake him out on an ant hill type.

MOGADISHU, Somalia — The president of Somalia's U.N.-backed government resigned Monday, saying he had lost control of the country to Islamic insurgents and could not fulfill his duties after four years leading the violent and impoverished nation.

Abdullahi Yusuf is the latest leader to have failed to pacify Somalia in two decades of turmoil and deadly violence. Somalia has been beset by anarchy, famine and a steady influx of weapons from abroad. More than a dozen attempts have been made to form an effective government since the last one collapsed in 1991.

Details and History of Crucifixion
"The Ancient Method of Execution"

History of Crucifixion

Persia and Alexander
Crucifixion probably originated with ancient Persians. There is evidence, that captured pirates were crucified in the port of Athens in the 7th century BC. Alexander the Great introduced the practice throughout his empire. He once crucified a general who disagreed with his campaign plans.

The Romans often broke the prisoner's legs to hasten death. Burial afterwards was not usually permitted. In some cases, the nails were gathered afterwards and used as healing amulets.

Emperor Constantine abolished crucifixion in the Roman Empire, when Christianity became the state religion.

Islamic world
Some medieval Muslim rulers used crucifixion sporadically.

Medieval Japan
Crucifixion was used in Japan before and during the Tokugawa Shogunate. It was called Haritsuke in Japanese. The victim—usually a sentenced criminal—was hoisted upon a T-shaped cross. Then, executioners killed him with spears. The body was left to hang for a time before burial.

Mesoamerica
There are some reports that, after the Spanish conquest of Mesoamerica in the 16th century, some natives performed human sacrifice by crucifixion due to their superficial understanding of Christianity.

re: #427 Quilly Mammoth

There is _no_ archaeological record of this. In fact, the Egyptians often used impalement. Crucifixion is most likely an invention of the Romans...it was surely they who brought it to the Middle East.

It depends on how narrowly one defines the term "crucifixion." Nailing someone to a big wooden T or X was a Roman innovation, as far as I know -- and hence the name of the procedure, after the Latin word crux, meaning "cross."

But there are other methods of public execution that somewhat resemble crucifixion insofar as the condemned person typically lingers for several agonizing days, before finally dying from some combination of weather exposure, asphyxiation, and dehydration.

For example, the mythical punishment of Prometheus, who was chained to a high rock so that the vultures could rip out his liver, can be regarded as "sort of" crucifixion. (Though of course Prometheus was immortal and so this was an unending torture rather than a slow execution.)

I read that most crucifixions were done without nailing. You could tie the victim to the cross bar and get the same effect.

That is because you had to keep lifting your torso up with your legs in order to breathe. The moment your legs gave out, the diaphragm collapses and you asphyxiate.

Cause of Death

Death could come in hours or days, depending on exact methods, the health of those crucified, and environmental circumstances.

A theory attributed to Pierre Barbet holds that the typical cause of death was asphyxiation. He conjectured that when the whole body weight was supported by the stretched arms, the victim would have severe difficulty exhaling, due to hyper-expansion of the lungs. The victim would therefore have to draw himself up by his arms, or have his feet supported by tying or by a wood block. Indeed, Roman executioners were said to break the victim's legs, after he had hung for some time, in order to hasten his death. Once deprived of support and unable to lift himself, the victim would die within a few minutes.

However, experiments by Frederick Zugibe indicated that, when suspended with arms at 60° to 70° from the vertical, test subjects had no difficulty breathing, only rapidly increasing discomfort and pain.

In any case, if death did not come from asphyxiation, it could result from a number of other causes, including physical shock, dehydration, and exhaustion.

One of the points of the story of the crucifixion of Jesus is that His side was pierced to hasten death--Sabbath started at sundown and it was against Jewish law for a person to remain hanging then.

re: #442 Throbert McGee

Maybe we just found a whole new strategy on the WOT.

"In antiquity crucifixion was considered one of the most brutal and shameful modes of death. Probably originating with the Assyrians and Babylonians, it was used systematically by the Persians in the 6th century BC. Alexander the Great brought it from there to the eastern Mediterranean countries in the 4th century BC, and the Phoenicians introduced it to Rome in the 3rd century BC. It was virtually never used in pre-Hellenic Greece. The Romans perfected crucixion for 500 years until it was abolished by Constantine I in the 4th century AD. Crucifixion in Roman times was applied mostly to slaves, disgraced soldiers, Christians and foreigners--only very rarely to Roman citizens."

His claim is that some imam will create a new fatwa that says pigs blood will not make cause for denial of entry to paradise.

Actually, my claim was that MANY MANY imams would issue such fatwas, and furthermore I'd predict that it wouldn't even be a matter of significant disagreement among Islamic authorities, as there exists centuries' worth of accumulated writings on the topic of "impure substances" and "ritual cleansing." That is, there's ample precedent for all of them to draw on.

Again, I'm not claiming that NO jihadis would be deterred from violence by their superstitious fear of pig's blood. I'm claiming, however, that any deterrent effect would be very short-lived, because imams would have such an easy time convincing the jihadis to stop worrying about it.

The circumstances surrounding Jesus' crucifixion had such a profound effect on Longinus that he later sought out the surviving Apostles, so he could learn from them. Hamas's Strategy: The Rockets or the Media

Nothing is clearer than Hamas's strategy. It gives Israel the choice between rockets and media, and Hamas thinks it is a situation of, "We win or you lose."

Option A: The Ceasefire

Hamas ends a ceasefire giving it the peace and quiet needed to build up its army and consolidate its rule over the Gaza Strip. Israel would deliver supplies as long as there weren't attacks. From a Western-style pragmatic standpoint this is a great situation.

But Hamas isn't a Western-style pragmatic organization. Peace and quiet is its enemy not only because of its ideology--the deity commands it to destroy Israel--or its self-image--as heroic martyrs--but also because battle is needed to recruit the masses for permanent war and unite the population around it.

Hamas has no program of improving the well-being of the people or educating children to be doctors, teachers, and engineers. Its platform has but one plank: war, war, endless war, sacrifice, heroism, and martyrdom until total victory is achieved.

Thus, it ends the ceasefire.

Option B: The Rockets

And so Hamas ends the ceasefire and rains rockets down on Israel, accompanied by mortars and the occasional attempt at a cross-border ground attack. Israel does nothing.

Hamas crows: you are weak, you are confused, your are helpless. Come, people, arise and destroy the paper tiger! And so more people are recruited, West Bank Palestinians look on with admiration at those fighting the enemy, and the Arabic-speaking world is impressed.

Remember 2006, they say. It is just like Hizballah. Israel is helpless against the rockets. Why don't our governments fight Israel? Let's overthrow them and bring brave, fighting Islamist governments to power.

Option C: The Media

But then Israel does fight back. Its planes bomb military targets which have been deliberately put amidst civilians. If there is a high danger of hitting civilians, Israel doesn't attack. But there is a line below which risk that will be taken, and rightly so.

The smug smiles are wiped off the faces of Hamas leaders. Yet they have one more weapon, their reserves, they call up the media.

Those arrogant, heroic, macho victors of yesterday--literally yesterday as the process takes only a few hours--are transformed into pitiful victims. Casualty figures are announced by Hamas, and accepted by reporters who are not on the spot. Everyone hit is, of course, a civilian. No soldiers here.

And the casualties are disproportionate: Hamas has arranged it that way. If necessary, sympathetic photographers take pictures of children who pretend to be injured, and once they are published in Western newspapers these claims become fact.

Yet there is a problem here. Rockets and mortars may win wars; newspaper articles really don't. Of course, too, material damage is inflicted that sets back Gaza's material development.

Hamas doesn't care about that, but by acting in a way to ensure the destruction of their material base, Hamas does weaken itself. Precisely because Israeli attacks are focussed on military targets, Hamas is weakened.

Conclusion: The problem with no solution

Of course, Israel does not win a complete victory. Hamas does not fall. The problem is not gone. For Hamas will define survival as victory. Hamas, like the PLO before it, wins one "victory" after another and always ends up worse off.

The conflict will be back, however it ends this round, on whatever day it ends. Quiet will return, the supplies will flow back into Gaza. And so many months in the future the process will be repeated.

There is, however, an important difference. Israel uses its time not only for military preparations but to educate its children, build its infrastructure, raise its living standards. Hamas doesn't.

"We believe in death," Hamas says, "You believe in life."

Be careful what you wish for, you will get it.

Jim Bishop wrote THE (non-biblical) book on the crucifixion in the 1950's. It's here: The Day Christ was Born/The Day Christ Died

If you've never read it, I recommend it highly. Very respectful and historically accurate.

639 David IV of Georgia  Mon, Dec 29, 2008 2:52:19pm

Crucifixion, or being nailed to a wooden t, T, X, or I, has been practiced in several cultures, but it was the Roman Empire that made it most known worldwide. They used it on non-citizens and slaves for the most heinous crimes. Jesus was accused of treason, and so he was crucified.

It was an extremely slow and painful way to die. Often the person only died after several days due to dehydration. Sometimes drugs and liquids were given to keep the person hydrated and to keep them from shock. Sometimes to speed the dying process, legs were broken causing shock, hemorrhaging and asphyxiation.

The Romans, after adopting Christianity, outlawed the practice several centuries before the birth of Islam.

I seriously doubt that if this dirty gem of information was splashed across the front page of every news paper in the world, it would make any difference. See, Hamas is driven to crucify because they are victims. I wouldn't expect the Christians of the world to do anything other than shudder in horror and say how awful it is. It isn't as if they'd unite and collectively do anything affirmative about it. They reserve that for missionary work and raising millions of dollars to fight gay marriage. Besides, what could they do, other than join in a already messy war?

As long as this distasteful little practice is going on "over there", everyone is safe to bitch about it, pretty much, everywhere else, Christians or not.

Ultimately, the solution is to eradicate the people doing this, and nobody has the gumption to do anything other than point fingers.

You look at the murder of the girls in Afghanistan and think that the place must be full of people eager to know that there is another way to look at the world but they can't hear about it. Sure they can get some development projects and a temporary school for literacy and basic math skills and even meet a small number of Americans who are cautioned not to challenge local beliefs but the invincibility of Islam can not be challenged. In effect the extremists start out 90% to victory because no one seriously challenges the basic credos they claim to be supporting. Absolute authority of Koran, perfection of Mohammed as an example, accuracy of the hadith and legitimacy of sharia are all conceded before the debate starts. If we wanted to change things we would have to insist that foreigners must have the same freedom that they believe moslems should have in America. That means the right to be missionaries. I do not proselytize and I do not belong to a religion that does. But I think that if what simply safe for people to walk around in Afghanistan and say "I am a Christian and it is OK, got any questions?" or "I am a Buddhist and it is OK, got any questions?" or "I am a Jew and it is OK, got any questions?" then the myth of Islamic invincibility, which is most of what it has going for it besides oil money, would be gone. Then I would expect the parents of those children and millions of others to run for the exits until this all becomes a strange page in history. That is the only way to win this war.

689 Who Watches the Watchmen?  Mon, Dec 29, 2008 3:08:15pm

From another board I read:

The Israelis and Palestinians will always be at war until one or both are obliterated. They are two societies with perceived divine right, and each society's ultimate goal is a Theocratic world government under the law of their respective holy book, with their nation leading the world.

There will never be peace until either:

One of these nations takes over the world
Both of these nations are destroyed
Both of these nations give up their foolish notions of ruling the world and imposing their religious will upon the rest of the world.

I don't see the last one ever happening. So get used to perpetual war. Heck, it's been going on for thousands of years, long before each of their "holy books" were written, why expect change now?

CRAWFORD, Texas – The White House, calling Monday for a lasting cease-fire in the Mideast, backed Israel's deadly air attacks on the Gaza Strip and said the Islamic militant group ruling there had shown its "true colors as a terrorist organization."

Having studied the subject quite intensively, with a number of master-class instructors, I have to ask: what isn't a good weapon?

Some non-weapon weapons are better for the task than others. I really like pens as a class of weapon. I don't know as you have to buy one of these high-dollar ones, but it is rather amusing.

You are right, good point. Anything is a weapon if used as such. The average house is full of such; lamps, bookends, end tables, coffee cups, speakers, etc.

60 minutes had a reprise last night of Steve Kroft interviews with Obama during the campaign. In one interview Kroft said that he was confronted by a viewer who claimed that Obama was a Muslim. Christian donors show support for southern towns
By RUTH EGLASH

In a move aimed at highlighting the strong relationship between Israel and its Christian supporters, the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews (IFCJ) announced Monday that it would designate some NIS 1,100,000 in emergency funds to Southern communities who are in direct line of fire from Hamas-launched rockets.

IFCJ Director-General Dvora Ganani-Elad, who toured some of the Southern towns Sunday, said that the elderly and disabled were most in need of extra assistance and specified that some of the emergency funds go towards helping them.

In addition, the funds, which will be allocated to each local according to its needs, are aimed at strengthening the social welfare system in the south.

Re the pig's blood stuff, similar has been tried before, in India, during the Sepoy Mutiny. After the massacre at Cawnpore:

The Company forces reached Kanpur on July 16, and captured the city. A group of British officers and soldiers set out to the Bibighar, to rescue the captives, assuming that they were still alive. However, when they reached the site, they found only dead bodies of the British women and children.

Brigadier General Neill, who took the command at Kanpur, decided to sentence the arrested rebels immediately, unless they could prove a defence. They were forced to clean the blood from the floor of the Bibighar compound. Then, they were forced to eat beef (if Hindu) or pork (if Muslim) — something they considered unholy. Some of the Muslim sepoys were sown into pig skins before being hung, and sweepers were employed to execute the high-caste Brahmin rebels. The idea was to humiliate the religious victims and prevent any reward they might have expected in the afterlife. After that, the rebels would be hanged and then buried in a ditch at the roadside. A set of nooses was set up next to the well at the Bibighar, so that they could die within sight of the massacre. Some rebels were tied across the mouths of cannon that were then fired; an execution method initially used by the rebels, and the earlier Indian powers, such as the Marathas and the Mughals.[14]

Drat! I don't know how the system operates, to refer back to your comment. In response to your question as to if I am Basque, I plead "not guilty". I married a lady who is part Basque, so I became a "Wannabe"! They are great people, as a whole, and quite a few live here in Boise. They have a festival every 5 years called Jaialdi, with dancing, music, athletic contests, demonstrations of wood chopping, games, and plenty of great food. The Basques come from all over the U.S. and Spain, and we "Basque" in the sun! My wife and I and her brother and his wife have been to Spain several times, and we discovered the ancestral home of my wife's grandmother, who came to the U.S. early last century. We even found some relatives, who were thrilled to meet some of their long-lost relatives. They showed us around, and had us over for dinner.
There is a Basque museum and bookstore in the Basque Center in Boise, and there is a Basque dance troupe called the Oinkari Basque Dancers which has performed all over the US.

Eskerrik asko! (Thank you!)

re: #37 Occasional Reader

Ironic that the Vatican issued its standard, lame "condemns all violence by everyone" statement by specifically saying "The terrestrial homeland of Jesus cannot continue to be the witness of such bloodshed which is repeated ad infinitum."

Yes but in fairness, the last time the Pope said anything remotely non-lame about Islam, some poor nun in Somalia got a bullet in the head.

Good point. The Vatican has limited power and no standing army. I think they could do more, however, to condemn Hamas and other terrorist acts committed under Islam, possibly in a more discreet and behind the scenes manner. Pope Benedict XVI did have harsh words for Islam early on and they went ballistic over it. At least he didn't kiss a Koran like Pope John Paul II did.

And the Christians and Jews dying at the hands of Muslims are true martyrs. Conversely, the Muslim terrorists hiding behind civilians and blowing themselves and other things up in order to deliberately murder civilians are blood sucking, sub-human pigs.

FWIW, the original source of this story (in Al Hayat) appeared to be dubious

The Jerusalem Post could not verify the veracity of the Al Hayat report.

and has since been denied.

Sources in human rights organizations in Gaza said that the PLC Law and Justice Committee had indeed held a workshop on the punishment law, but that many of its members opposed a law in the spirit of Islam.

gregg is technically correct.

The nuns at my elementary school were Carmellite, IIRC. So that disagrees slightly with Wiki; But only the nuns/sisters entered past the kitchen door, or front hall, of their convent. The Priest did have services in their chapel at times, so he and altar boys would be allowed entry.

Our nuns had those solid oak clickers with a big round ball on it-OAK! Get hit on the knuckle, or the noggin, it hurt.

re: #270 Throbert McGee

Sheesh.

'Fraid I have to agree. The nineteenth century examples worked, when they worked, because of the lack of communications technology. These folks are not actually seventh century hicks. They're twenty-first century *********s.

re: #95 Mandy Manners

Two cents off topic:

Dear Euskalherria in your words were I read you plead ‘not guilty’ of being Basque I also read something similar to what we saw past December 3d. when Ignacio Uría was killed by ETA, either for not following the usual ETA blackmailing to Basque enterprisers or for being responsible to lead the high speed train to the so called Basque country and ETA don’t want .

In this caption you can see the state of the people there. You can see the folks he used to play cards with playing the day after as usual. This is remarkable since Ignacio Uría even belonged to the PNV. The PNV (Partido Nacionalista Vasco) is a politically correct version of the separatism whose master Arzallus said once “ETA shakes the walnut tree and we get the walnuts”. Even Ignacio's family, days after said “Why him?, he was one of us!. (and what about the 944 murdered by ETA?, weren’t they?). He is the number 944.

The walnuts of wrath are the fruits of a century of hate planted by the leftist separatism in a country, Spain, which was just one until socialists came in charge.

Now, when I hear the Basque idiom which separatists invented mixing ancient dialects I think that it uses the Latin alphabet. Words not being rock or tree but space shuttle or television involves the use of Greek and/or Latin prefixes an suffixes. And still, a rare idiom like the Tagalog for example is spoken for hundreds thousands more than the Basque.

I used to be proud of being Spaniard, of our history, the way we used to fight ruthlessly for freedom. We fought Islam for eight centuries, Napoleon’s first defeat was by men armed with knives in Madrid streets attacking his cavalry, we even sent our worst sob’s to conquer America, (brave Basques were there too), but now, specially since that shitty human being we have as president retrieved our troops from Iraq and I see the state of things regarding this Basque subject and the whole country, Sir, I don’t care for nothing, it’s not yet the time, but, you should be aware of these before making your statements.

Regards,

Jorge.

re: #29 goddessoftheclassroom

Crucifixion was a Roman thing. I don't believe it was ever a Christian method of execution.

Actually it appears to have been invented in Iran, perhaps circa 500 BC. The Greeks, or at least the Macedonians, used it from time to time. Ditto the Carthaginians. The Romans just, more or less, popularized it.

780 Tom Kratman  Mon, Dec 29, 2008 8:25:45pm

re: #48 Buck

IMO they would never actually do it.

They know the power of Symbols, and this would tear through their support in a way that would be devastating.

There's precedent for that opinion. Anyone who institutes sharia has already given the okay for crucifixion. See Sura Five, the Koran. The Saudis have done it once or perhaps a couple of times in recent memory. They, however, only put the body on a cross of someone they'd already executed by other means. On this the Koran is silent.

re: #99 mean Gene

I don't know.....
The early Muslims didn't have tall buildings but some imams say they homosexuals should be thrown off semi-tall buildings so they writhe in pain as they slowly die after the fall.
AND, early Muslims didn't have construction cranes but they quickly figured out that if you raise a person in a noose at the very slowest speed they suffocate painfully and more slowly than a quick fall from a horse under a tree or a trapdoor would do.

This is also not entirely clear. Videos of hangings in Iran tend to show fairly quick cessation of movement for men, a minute or two - but sometimes mere seconds - before the cut off of blood to the brain renders them unconscious. It may, of course, take a while for the body to die. Hanged women, on the other hand, probably because they weigh so much less, tend to actually strangle very slowly and struggle for quite some time.

re: #172 Shr_Nfr

The ancient Egyptians were more into impalement. In my forages into the time prior to the Ptolemies, I know of no reference to crucifixion. Their standard execution of grave robbers was to take them out into a nice hot area and play bug and pin with them. Not a nice way to go.

Check the aftermath to the Siege of Tyre. 2000 Tyrians cruficied by Alexander after the fall of the city, 332 BC.

re: #377 rawmuse

Crucifixion is, of course, the slowest and most humiliating way to die.
But, they know that.

Not necessarily. It's got a lot of variability to it. Hook someone's arms over the stirpes, or nail or tie them so they're almost directly overhead, tie the feet down with the legs straight so he can't raise himself: 8-10 minutes before suffocation. Leave the feet free hanging: maybe an hour. Tie or nail the feet with legs bent so he can raise himself: days.

Yeah, I did a lot of research on it for a book.

"Spirit of Islam" - surprisingly that does not fill me with much confidence.

Ummm... yeah. The PLC Law and Justice Committee includes a number of non-Hamas non-Islamist members, who don't want to implement sharia or any facsimile thereof, i.e., who don't want laws passed "in the spirit of Islam." That's what the MEMRI blurb was saying.

The Hamas members "passed" (i.e., voted for) the law but apparently didn't have the numbers to prevail. That's the point.

I have no doubt that most if not all of those non-Hamas non-Islamist PLC L&J Committee members would be just as eager to see the Jews pushed into the sea as the jihadi Hamas members and I'm not offering apologies for them. Just pointing out that this particular story appears to have been misrepresented.

Check this article:
[Link: www.alarabiya.net...]
here you can find the translation:
[Link: www.freerepublic.com...]

Besides crucifixion it states also:
"The punishment of lashes appears in many sections of the law. Section 84 states that: "Whoever drinks wine, owns or produces wine will be punished with 40 lashes if he is Muslim, and anyone who drinks wine, or angers another person [with wine], or causes him distress when drinking wine in a public place, or goes to a public place while drunk, will be punished with no less than 40 lashes and imprisonment for the minimum of three months.""

Now this is a classic sample of Apartheid as penal law differs between inhabitants under one ruler.

787 Joel  Tue, Dec 30, 2008 6:11:59am

Contrary to Renaissance era paintings and to movies - crucifixion for the most part involved a small cross more like a capital "T" rather then the"+" style and the victim was nailed through the wrists and both heel bones separately. It was preceded by a horrific scourging in which the victims back was pretty much ripped up.

Kaixo, Jorge:

I am sorry that you have such a negative view of the Basques. I assure you that only a tiny percentage of them support the ETA terrorists; I know many Basques and none of them feel anything but disgust for those radical terrorists. You must agree, though, that Spain under Generalissimo Francisco Franco was a totalitarian country; Franco tried to destroy the Basque language and culture. Basically, the Basques just want to be left alone in peace; most of them are not separatists. Remember, ETA is an enemy of most Basques, not just the Spanish government and the non-Basque majority Spaniards. I am fully aware of Spanish history, and admire the Spanish for their contributions to Western culture. I believe that we should all be proud of our heritage, while acknowledging the wrongs committed in the past. After all, we are all children of the same God, and must answer to Him.
Zorionak! (Best wishes)!
