The world is full of complainers. But the fact is, nothing comes with a guarantee. I don’t care if you’re the Pope of Rome, President of the United States, or even Man of the Year—something can always go wrong. And go ahead, complain, tell your problems to your neighbor, ask for help—watch him fly. Now in Russia, they got it mapped out so that everyone pulls for everyone else— that’s the theory, anyway. But what I know about is Texas...And down here... you’re on your own.

Gaza Protests Now Target Arab Leaders

BEIRUT, Lebanon -- On the third day of Israel's attack on Gaza, street protesters across the Middle East broadened their rage toward Israel and the U.S. to include Arab rulers accused of not acting forcefully and fast enough to stop the violence.

The ferocity of the Israeli attacks in Gaza -- and mounting casualties, which United Nations estimated Monday at 320 dead, including 62 civilians, and more than 1,400 injured -- could channel pent-up anger against Arab leaders into further support for Islamist groups. These groups are increasingly seen as the only organized movements willing to stand up to Israel.

"These feelings have been there for years; what has changed is that Arabs now have extremist groups through which they can channel their anger and resentment," said Rami Khouri, a political analyst in Beirut. "You'll have a new generation of people who want to fight Israel."

Our church leaders in Salt Lake have asked us to learn how to live in a quarantine environment for a limited period. So in addition to our year's supply of food, we have to be prepared to be self-sufficient while isolated.

I don't know what your community set-up is like, but I think the best way to approach that in a suburban or town setting would be to figure out as a community what you need, and assume you'll have to pull together as a group. You know, one guy with a generator per half block or something, rather than everyone replicates everything. Your chances of both setting it up, and being able to make it work seem to go up if you handle it like that.

I sympathize with the food storage thing. When my father was a cop, his partner was LDS, and he and his wife lived in a very teeny southern California beach house. They were geniuses with storage.

URGENT! Israeli Navy Attacking Civilian Mercy Ship! TAKE ACTION IMMEDIATELY!
[Send to Friend] [Print]
Date : 12-30-2008

The Dignity, a Free Gaza boat on a mission of mercy to besieged Gaza, is being attacked by the Israeli Navy in international waters. The Dignity has been surrounded by at least half-a-dozen Israeli warships. They are firing live ammunition around the Dignity, and one of the warships has rammed the civilian craft causing an unknown amount of damage. Contrary to international maritime law, the Israelis are actively preventing the Dignity from approaching Gaza or finding safe haven in either Egypt or Lebanon. Instead, the Israeli navy is demanding that the Dignity return to Cyprus - despite the fact that the ship does not carry enough fuel to do so. Fortunately, no one aboard the ship has yet been seriously injured.

I'm pretty sure the self-quarantine is individual families. Undoubtedly people will have to borrow and trade in a careful and limited way. Some of these viruses have a 65% fatality rate so no room for error. We are stocking up on a limited amount of educational supplies as well for the children. Water storage, medical supplies - I draw the line at "home dentistry" - although in a crisis - who knows?

Rights complaint against imam rejected

MONTREAL — The Canadian Human Rights Commission won’t investigate a complaint against a Montreal imam who allegedly wrote disparagingly, and sometimes with violent intent, about Jews, Christians and other “infidels,” as well as homosexuals, women and democracy in general.

The complaint was lodged in April by Marc Lebuis, publisher of a Quebec-based website Point de Bascule (Tipping Point), which aims to raise awareness of what its creators perceive as the threat to western values posed by radical Islam.

Lebuis claimed Abou Hammaad Sulaiman Dameus Al-Hayit disseminated hate propaganda in his book L’Islam ou l’Intégrisme? A la lumière du Qor’an et de la Sounnah (Islam or Fundamentalism? In light of the Qur’an and the Sunna) in the book’s third edition, which was published in 2006-07 on the Internet.

The commission found that the writings are not likely to expose members of any identifiable group to hatred or contempt, according to the law.

Among the book excerpts Lebuis cited was that Jews “spread corruption and chaos on Earth,” and “unjustly occupy” Palestine for the sole purpose of “filling this land with corruption and transgress the laws of Allah in the name of secularism.”

As well, Lebuis alleges the imam wrote that most Jews “seek only material goods and money. Apart from that, they have nothing.”

Christianity, according to Lebuis’ excerpts, is the reason the West is “full of perversity, corruption and adultery.”

Other excerpts state that all “infidels” are “evil… love perversity and “are our enemies,” and that Muslims are better than others.

Elsewhere, the imam wrote that democracy is contrary to Islam and that Muslims should overthrow “infidel” rulers whenever they are strong enough to do so.

In an Islamic state, Jews and Christians would keep their religion but pay a fee called the jizyah. “The purpose of the jizyah is to humiliate and punish infidels to encourage them to accept Islam,” Lebuis quotes from the book.

Those of other faiths or atheists must accept Islam or “be killed.”

The author also calls for the extermination of homosexuals.

I just can't understand why everyone doesn't want to convert to such an uplifting positive religion.

Entering a war zone is against international law, and extremely stupid.
Israel should take the ship and intern everyone on board until hostilities with Gaza are over.
Then the boat and all contents should be sold, and the proceeds used to pay those Israelis who suffered under attacks from Gaza. The internees should be sent to Egypt unless they can cover air fare from Israel.

No doubt these are some of the "civilians causalities" caused by Israel that the BBC and CNN keeps telling us about:

On Monday, Dr. Ashour was not the only official in charge. Armed Hamas militants in civilian clothes roamed the halls. Asked their function, they said it was to provide security. But there was internal bloodletting under way.

In the fourth-floor orthopedic section, a woman in her late 20s asked a militant to let her see Saleh Hajoj, her 32-year-old husband. She was turned away and left the hospital. Fifteen minutes later, Mr. Hajoj was carried out by young men pretending to transfer him to another ward. As he lay on the stretcher, he was shot in the left side of the head.

Mr. Hajoj, like five others killed at the hospital this way in 24 hours, was accused of collaboration with Israel. He had been in the central prison awaiting trial by Hamas judges; when Israel destroyed the prison on Sunday he and the others were transferred to the hospital. But their trials were short-circuited.

A crowd at the hospital showed no mercy after the shooting, which was widely observed. A man in his 30s mocked a woman expressing horror at the scene.

“This horrified you?” he shouted. “A collaborator that caused the death of many innocent and resistance fighters?”

NAIROBI, Kenya — Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf resigned Monday, conceding that Islamist insurgents had overtaken much of the country and that he had been unable to unite the fragmented Horn of Africa nation.

"Most of the country is not in our hands," Yusuf said in a speech before parliament in Baidoa, describing the nation as "paralyzed."

It is "one of the most", but far from the most populated if you compare to some cities and counties.(Per square mile)

Gaza 8666
District of Columbia 9176
Gibraltar 11,990
Singapore 17,751
Hong Kong 17,833
Monaco 41,608
Macau 71,466
Cairo 82,893
Calcutta 108,005
Manila 113,810

These kinds of statistics are totally stupid. The fact is that the Gaza Strip is one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in the entire world, and if the Gazans weren't so stupid, they would have developed it and turned it into a fabulous resort paradise.

If the Gazans lived in the Garden of Eden, they wouldn't know what to do with it. They would turn it into a garbage heap, like they did with their lovely beaches.

UN official says Gazans got nothing from Israeli truce

Speaking to reporters by videolink from Gaza, Karen AbuZayd, head of the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), said she thought Gazans believed a 6-month-old truce was violated by Israel, not Hamas, which ended it on Dec. 19.

AbuZayd, an American, said they believed Hamas had observed the truce quite strictly ... and that they got nothing in return, because there was supposed to be a kind of a deal -- if there were no rockets the crossings would be opened. The crossings weren't opened at all."

Israel had also launched an incursion to kill Palestinian militants, "so then the rockets went out and that was sort of the breakdown of the truce," she said.

I don't get why hostiles are allowed to enter a combat zone. This includes Tony Blair's yucky sister-in-law, Cynthia McKinney, and most of the "journalists" who go to bash Israel.

They should be interned, as you said. No more "Mr. Nice Guy," Israel.

Come Fire Away

I'm sailing today, with a precious cargo of virgin sheep
I've got to be free, free to fire the mortars ahead of me
On board, I'm the captain, so climb aboard
We'll search for casualties on every shore
And I'll try, oh lord, what I'll try to carry on
I look to the C-4, its electric waves spark the det-cords
Many bodies, how glad
Think of our childhood detonations at bus stops
We war happily forever, so the Zionist story goes
But somehow we missed out on our sovereignty
But well try best that we can to self-victimize
A car swarm of martyrs appeared around my head
They sang to me this song of hope, and this is what they said
They said come fire away, come fire away
Come fire away with me
Come fire away, come fire away
Come fire my AK with me!

UNRWA's schools are places where anti-American and anti-Semitic indoctrination is business as usual and virtual recruiting offices for terror groups. Its facilities are virtual military bases for those groups.

That all this goes on not only under the authority of the U.N. but at the expense of U.S. taxpayers (who fund much of the U.N.'s activities) is outrageous.

It is the U.N. as a whole and UNRWA in particular that is the insult to the honor of the organization. Reform can only begin with UNRWA's dissolution, which is a course of action that should be at the top of Washington's Middle East priority list."

re: #153 MJ

"As a recent report issued by the Herzliya-based Global Research in International Affairs details, UNRWA's scandalous policies include doing everything to prevent resettlement of the refugees out of the "refugee camps." UNRWA's schools are places where anti-American and anti-Semitic indoctrination is business as usual and virtual recruiting offices for terror groups.

Hey Crux sorry about your losing the match and series. For the first time SA cricket is in a really good "space". The news over here is really going crazy. You would think that SA won the world cup or something. You guys may have the one over SA in the one days and T20. The side is not nearly as settled as the test side.

What would you expect after virtually half the (test) side retired last year. And we have a tour of SA coming in Feb to April. The one day squad is a different proposition entirely.

UNRWA: Refuge Of Rejectionism
Barry Rubin, Asaf Romirowsky, and Jonathan Spyer
May 8, 2008
A Report from the Global Research in International Affairs (GLORIA) Center

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

On the surface, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) seems a humanitarian group helping Palestinian refugees. In reality, it actually helps destroy the chance of Arab-Israeli peace, promotes terrorism, and holds Palestainians back from rebuilding their lives.

Unique in history, UNRWA's job is to keep Palestinian refugees in suspended animation--and at low living standards--until they achieve the goal set for them by the PLO and Hamas: Israel's extinction. In the meantime, their suffering and anger is maintained as a weapon to encourage them toward violence and intransigence.

UNRWA schools become hotbeds of anti-Western, anti-American, and anti-Semitic indoctrination, recruiting offices for terrorist groups. UNRWA's services are dominated by radicals who staff and subsidize radical groups while potentially intimidating anyone from voicing a different line. UNWRA facilities are used to store and transport weapons, actually serving as military bases.

In this process, UNRWA has broken all the rules that are supposed to govern humanitarian enterprises. Consequently, UNRWA is the exact opposite of other refugee relief operations. They seek to resettle refugees; UNRWA is dedicated to blocking resettlement. They help refugees to live normal lives so that they can move on with their existence; UNRWA's role is to ensure their lives remain abnormal so they are filled with anger and a thirst for revenge that inspires violence and can only be quenched by a victorious return. They try to create stable conditions for refugees; UNRWA's mission is to enable radical political activity and indoctrination by armed groups which ensures a continual state of near chaos.

Rest here:

Here's a case study of how Middle East politics really work:

* Hamas really believes its own propaganda, expecting victory despite the odds. Costs and casualties are irrelevant. The battle will go on until total victory even if that takes decades. This indicates Hamas will not moderate--the same applies to Hizballah, Syria, and Iran.
* At the same time, Hamas is not only indifferent to its own people's welfare, it actually seeking to inflict suffering on them as a political strategy. The worse off Palestinians are, Hamas believes, the more likely they will fight and die. This "the worse things are, the better they are," is the exact opposite of Western perspectives.

re: #184 Dark_Falcon

The best part and sums up what I have being trying to say here for the last couple days.

Conclusion: The problem with no solution

Of course, Israel does not win a complete victory. Hamas does not fall. The problem is not gone. For Hamas will define survival as victory. Hamas, like the PLO before it, wins one "victory" after another and always ends up worse off.

The conflict will be back, however it ends this round, on whatever day it ends. Quiet will return, the supplies will flow back into Gaza. And so many months in the future the process will be repeated.

There is, however, an important difference. Israel uses its time not only for military preparations but to educate its children, build its infrastructure, raise its living standards. Hamas doesn't.

"We believe in death," Hamas says, "You believe in life."

Be careful what you wish for, you will get it.

Well I certainly agree with you about civilian casualties, but it seems to me that the Gaza civilians (assuming the IDF does go in and occupy Gaza, while killing Hama's fighters by the truckload) could certainly lose their enthusiasm for Hamas. Don't forget that those self same civilians allowed Hamas to literally use their back yards to place their rocket launchers and previously OVERWHELMINGLY elected Hamas - as I say, that enthusiasm for Hamas could easily decline significantly.

If done right it will help. The people of Gaza need to be shocked into contact with reality. But it may not work even then. Their ideology is very strong in their minds and too many of them know nothing else. It will rise again unless in can be supplanted. And no western country can at present really handle the business of said replacement, as it would require now absent self-confidence.

The family reunion is winding down with only a few major meltdowns. My kids and I got together tonight to compare notes and we found out that my moonbat sister, whom they met this week for the first (and probably now the last) time has been taunting each one of them. Here's a sample:

AUNTIE MOONBAT: So, I understand that you were in the Israeli Army.

MY SON: Yeah, that's right.

AUNTIE MOONBAT: So, have you ever heard of Rachel Corrie?

SON (thinking: WTF!) Yeah.

AUNTIE MOONBAT: Well, what do you think of her?

SON (thinking: She's a not too bright fucked up nazi bitch who played chicken with a 'dozer and got pancakefied, but if I say this to Auntie Moonbat, Grandma is going to kick my ass ) That happened before I went in to the service.

AUNTIE MOONBAT: They made a play about her. Did you know that?

SON: Yeah, I read about that on the news.

Apparently at this point Auntie Moonbat's dog tried to martyr himself by chomping on a grape that rolled off the buffet table, and stopped this painful conversation.

Now my kids and I will have Auntie Moonbat stories to swap for years to come, replacing the Uncle Homeless Doctor stories that are becoming rather stale.

Family reunions rock!

If done right it will help. The people of Gaza need to be shocked into contact with reality. But it may not work even then. Their ideology is very strong in their minds and too many of them know nothing else. It will rise again unless in can be supplanted. And no western country can at present really handle the business of said replacement, as it would require now absent self-confidence.

what will rise again?...Hamas/Fatah militancy?....let it...what are they gonna do? seeth? they do that now....

She may have learned but it must be a large number of people in order to effect a change. If those people who have come to their senses remain few and isolated they'll simply be pummeled back to the party line or killed. Well I think so. I mean None of the Arab states seems willing to allow the Palestinians to move into their states. Not one has ever offered that and two - Egypt and Jordan - have in fact either killed or forced the Palestinians out of their states.
And they do serve the useful idiot purpose of continuing to engage Israel with weapons and money supplied by those self same states who won't let them reside in their states. And that, it would appear, is the ONLY reason for the Palestinians existence.

275 redc1c4  Mon, Dec 29, 2008 11:41:57pm

it's enough to make ya cry......

Dear MoveOn member,
You've probably heard about how Wall Street financier Bernard Madoff scammed investors out of at least $50 billion.

But you may not have heard that his victims included the foundations that support some really important progressive organizations. Groups that fight for human rights, fair elections and racial justice are getting hit hard—just in time for the holidays. We've worked side-by-side with many of them.

If these groups can't replace the funding that came from investment accounts that Madoff stole, they may be forced to start cutting important projects or, in some cases, even lay off staff.

Can you pitch in $25 or $50 for each of the four organizations we're highlighting below? Our friends at Atlantic Philanthropies and the Open Society Institute will each match every dollar that comes in until January 1! So, for the next three days, your donation of $25 or $50 means $75 or $150 for groups affected by Madoff. If a few thousand of us give together, it can make an enormous difference—and help repair some of the damage Madoff has done. Click here to contribute:
(deleted)
Your end-of-the-year gift will be tax-deductible as if you had made the gift directly to the designated charities; we will forward 100% of your contribution to the organizations you select.

Many organizations have been hit by this crisis. We're highlighting the four that MoveOn has worked closely with over the last few years. Here's a bit about each of the groups:

The Brennan Center for Justice is a nonpartisan institute that focuses on fundamental issues of democracy and justice. Their work ranges from voting rights to redistricting reform to checking presidential power in the fight against terrorism. MoveOn has worked with the Brennan Center closely in the fight for fair elections. Chip in to help them out here.

Human Rights Watch is one of the world's leading independent organizations dedicated to defending and protecting human rights. By focusing international attention where human rights are violated, they give voice to the oppressed and hold oppressors accountable for their crimes. Its rigorous, objective investigations and strategic, targeted advocacy build intense pressure for action and raise the cost of human rights abuse. MoveOn has worked with Human Rights Watch on campaigns to preserve the constitution and protect human rights in America and abroad. Chip in to help them out here.

Advancement Project is a policy, communications and legal action group committed to racial justice founded by a team of veteran civil rights lawyers in 1998. They have pursued critical litigation to protect voters and also support grassroots movements for universal opportunity and just democracy in the areas of education and immigrants' rights. MoveOn has worked with Advancement Project to stop vote suppression, especially among minority folks. Chip in to help them out here.

The Center for Constitutional Rights is dedicated to advancing and protecting the rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Founded in 1966 by attorneys who represented civil rights movements in the South, CCR is a nonprofit legal and educational organization committed to the creative use of law as a positive force for social change. MoveOn has worked with CCR to hold President Bush accountable for his unconstitutional acts, from illegal wiretaps to Guantanamo. Chip in to help them out here.

2008 has been an extraordinary year. Together, MoveOn's 5 million members have done so much—and we have a new president and new hope to show for it. But we wouldn't be where we are as a country without a strong movement of interconnected progressive organizations. Let's come together one last time to keep that movement going strong.

Thanks for all you do.
–Eli, Carrie, Ilyse and the entire MoveOn.org Civic Action team

Fiction, lightweight intellectually and in actual weight, with one of those stretchy covers so people won't comment on what you're reading and try to tell you what they thought of it or what you might also want to read. If it isn't fiction, then maybe a bio of someone you admire.

As if Things Weren't Bad Enough, Russian Professor Predicts End of U.S.

He based the forecast on classified data supplied to him by FAPSI analysts, he says. He predicts that economic, financial and demographic trends will provoke a political and social crisis in the U.S. When the going gets tough, he says, wealthier states will withhold funds from the federal government and effectively secede from the union. Social unrest up to and including a civil war will follow. The U.S. will then split along ethnic lines, and foreign powers will move in.

California will form the nucleus of what he calls "The Californian Republic," and will be part of China or under Chinese influence. Texas will be the heart of "The Texas Republic," a cluster of states that will go to Mexico or fall under Mexican influence. Washington, D.C., and New York will be part of an "Atlantic America" that may join the European Union. Canada will grab a group of Northern states Prof. Panarin calls "The Central North American Republic." Hawaii, he suggests, will be a protectorate of Japan or China, and Alaska will be subsumed into Russia.

Egypt, no. But how about Detroit, Michigan? Even with their love for rocketry, 1.5 million Palestinian immigrants wouldn't even be noticed and they would all vote Democrat.

Wait. Come to think of it, the belated proxy votes of the Palestinians are needed *right now* in Minnesota! I'm sure the Minnesota Supreme Court will certainly discover that the Palestinians have an indisputable ex post facto right to representation in the Senate election and it would make the slow and embarrassing pilfering of votes there unnecessary.

I replied to the link earlier today. What I said in a nutshell is that the old miniseries called Amerika is definitely worth the watch. The challenge would be in finding it. Its plot is the US taken over by Russia. The professor's map reminded me of it. The US was in regions in the movie, like Pacifica (I think), Heartland, and I don't remember the east coast's name.

Last year, we got trounced by leftist Crooks & Liars, because of the predominance of liberal voters, not because they were a better video blog.

The issue is that especially in this era of Obama, it's more vital that all the nominated extra-category conservative blogs receive (political) validation. We should make a ticket to vote for.

re: #232 redc1c4

Saudi Arabia has lots of empty land.... as does Syria.

/just a thought

The Middle East doesn't work like that and it never has. Remember that before the Jews came, Palestine was a wasteland that nobody but archaeologists and Zionists cared much about. Nobody bothered the Ottoman Turks about Palestinian sensibilities.

But to have actual Jews create a prosperous country there, to include Palestinians in the new country, to try to provide them an average standard of living higher than most people in the neighboring countries . . . this is absolutely intolerable and must be eradicated by any and all means possible!

What seems to be the plan now is to insert more and more independent countries within Israel--one country for each identifiable Palestinian political party. Thus, at some point, it is hoped that Israel itself will disappear in a confusing array of 20 or 30 interlocking and overlapping Palestinian states, protectorates, mandates, and zones of influence, not to mention the Palestinian state of Jordan.

If Israel ever does actually disappear, then Egypt, Syria, and Jordan will step in, deport all Jews, and quietly liquidate the radical Palestinians--their purpose now outlived--under the watchful guidance of the UN (always in favor of an orderly process of genocide as opposed to messy and wildly disorganized genocide). The Palestinian states will evaporate, the world press will forget that the Palestinians ever existed, and the area will return to a wasteland to everyone's relief.

Who knows, maybe Palestine will then be returned to Turkish rule and the world will be happy to resume their tradition of chasing Jews from country to country.

Oh it is very real... in Iran the clergy is actively recruiting Islamic warrior to attack and destroy Israel.

We should not be surprised to see the weaponry used against Israel become increasingly sophisticated, and foreign fighters become active combatants in every part of the battle field.

Israel is in a battle for national survival. This is not a cake walk, and anyone who suggests otherwise is mistaken. Iran is committed to Israel's destruction, and is now recruiting fighters to achieve that goal.

Concern for humanity and preserving the environment are simply tools for the political agenda of their leaders, and "moonbats" follow the mantra of their leaders (orthodoxy being more important to them than logical consistency).

Carl in Jerusalem has more details on what really happend to that moonbat ship.

Unless it incorporates the phrase 'Gaza's newest reef', I'll probably give that link a pass.

I pray too, but I am concerned that Israel's enemies have become emboldened by Iran's defiance of the west over the nuke issue, and the tremendous growth in financing made available for Jihadi operations by nations hostile to Israel with funds that grew out of the high price of oil during the first part of 2008.
The martyrdom operations and suicide attacks that are sponsored by nations like Iran are always a concern, and Israel has every right to vigorously defend her citizens from the her enemies fanatical excesses.

I hope that the muslim diety has to create a whole heap of virgins to reward suicide bombers who suffered martyrdom but failed to hurt anyone else.

Moon bats deserve to be forced to live in Iran, where they can see Homosexuals being hanged up close, women harassed by govenrment officials for wearing western attire, stoning women to death for adultery, rape victims being charged with adultery and Sharia law imposed on them including traumatic hand amputation for shop lifting.

If they were forced to endure that, then maybe they would understand the reality we are combatting.

My hopes, precisely - in regard to all those raisins needed!

The other hope I have is that more states in the ME are now very apprehensive in regard to Iran. It is remarkable that we have not had any persistent calls for Israel to stop from any of the usual suspects. The Magic Kingdom has been very quiet, as has Jordan, Kuwait, UAR etc
I don't think they are keeping quiet because they are supporting a surprise strike by Hizbullah/Iran.
With Pakistan in disarray, and with troups still stationed in a more peaceful Iraq I have the impression that Iran must feel very isolated and that what we see is bluster to hide their impotence, nukes or not.

Well - thats how I interpret the situation, probably seen through hopeful&rosy-tinted glasses ...

Do moonbats realize that the Palestinian movement led by Hamas that they are sovigorously defending recently approved:
[Link: newsblaze.com...]
1. Crucifiction as a punishment for Christians?
2. Amputation for petty thievers
3. Lashing in the publlic square for various offenses.

Where are the human rights advocates regarding these matters. Why the silence?
Would moonbats defend them so aggressively if they knew this?

I hope the ex Texas Legislator C McKinney is forced to live in Hamas under Sharia Law for a while, then she would have a better appreciation of what Hamas thinks of women, especially outspoken women like her.
It would perhaps be an eye opener for her... though I do not know how she cannot know the kind of organization that Hamas is.

For some reason they turn a blind eye to true tyranny. Some how the same eyes magnify every small flaw of our nations and call it evil. Who knows why. Guilt? Jealousy? Of course the common response will be basic stupidity.
