Pro-Hamas Article of the Day

At the Times of London, William Sieghart asks, “What’s so bad about Hamas?

His solution to the conflict:

It is said that this conflict is impossible to solve. In fact, it is very simple. The top 1,000 people who run Israel - the politicians, generals and security staff - and the top Palestinian Islamists have never met. Genuine peace will require that these two groups sit down together without preconditions. But the events of the past few days seem to have made this more unlikely than ever. That is the challenge for the new administration in Washington and for its European allies.

It's sad that people like this insist on waxing poetic about things they don't have a clue about. It is in the Hamas charter that they do NOT negotiate. Period. Why is this so hard for people to understand?

Yes, everyone just sit down at the table.

Let's ignore the Hamas charter that calls for genocide and the annihilation of Israel. Hamas doesn't want a two-state solution. It wants to eliminate Israel.

That's the only proposal that the terror scum will find acceptable.

Israel defends itself from genocidal terrorists, and they're the ones that have to put down their weapons and make concessions in the name of peace.

What the frack?

Seriously, how about demanding Hamas make humanitarian gestures. Okay who am I kidding - everyone including these useful idiots know that Hamas and the other terrorists are incapable of ever engaging in humanitarian gestures. Period. They simply heap scorn and derision on Israel for existing and not doing enough to placate genocidal terrorists.

As such, they too support the terrorists.

Anyone ready for a second pro-Hamas "article"?

This editorial today in my local paper by syndicated columnist Froma Harrop contains this gem (among many others):

But peace and occupation cannot co-exist for long. A political solution must give Palestinians full control of their space and an approximate return to the borders before the 1967 war. That ultimately has to be the deal, and the violent confrontation in Gaza changes none of it.

*spit*

48 Sharmuta  Wed, Dec 31, 2008 11:06:34am

What's so bad about Hamas? Hmm.

Maybe the fact that they use humanitarian supplies, intended to go to the people of Gaza, and use those supplies to create rockets to fire randomly into Israel to kill any man, woman, or child that finds himself or herself in its path.

Maybe the fact that Hamas enters ceasefires it has no intentions of honouring.

Maybe the fact that Hamas is intentionally worsening the situation of Gaza for its on purposes -- and maybe the fact that Hamas are a group of lying, murderous, traitorous terrorist scum, and an organization that does not deserve to exist at all.

re: #18 lawhawk

Even the Guardian has begun to admit this unavoidable fact in it's assessment of the situation.

[Link: www.guardian.co.uk...]

It is not just Israel that does not talk to Hamas. The EU and US also refuse contact.

That is because Hamas is a terrorist organisation. Its founding charter claims the Holy Land exclusively for Islam and calls for the complete annihilation of Israel. For all that the international community might wish for Israeli restraint, no government in the world would tolerate an enclave on its border run by an organisation ideologically motivated and heavily armed to kill its citizens.

(They still arrive at the wrong conclusion of course, but it's an improvement on the naive idiocy of this guy in the Times)

Again, this is why I am beginning to lose hope for the future of western civilization.

It is obvious people like this have spent time in school, allowed the tax payers to fund their educations, and still they know nothing.

What he is proposing was already attempted by way of Oslo, only to be undermined by the very group he suggests the Israelis should sit down with.

I think I'll have the Samah, well done.

66 karmic_inquisitor  Wed, Dec 31, 2008 11:10:35am

OMFG.

Look at what Fisk is writing today.

Boiled down - Hamas is wasting resources fighting Israel because they aren't as good at killing Jews as Hizballah. And Israel is wasting resources because they are incompetent at fighting in cities.

So Fisk sees a tragedy because Hamas cannot liquidate Jews efficiently and thus contributes to suffering in Gaza.

During the second Palestinian "intifada", I was sitting in the offices of Hizbollah's Al-Manar television station in Beirut, watching news footage of a militiaman's funeral in Gaza. The television showed hordes of Hamas and PLO gunmen firing thousands of rounds of ammunition into the air to honour their latest "martyr"; and I noticed, just next to me, a Lebanese Hizbollah member – who had taken part in many attacks against the Israelis in what had been Israel's occupation zone in southern Lebanon – shaking his head.

What was he thinking, I asked? "Hamas try to stand up to the Israelis," he replied. "But..." And here he cast his eyes to the ceiling. "They waste bullets. They fire all these bullets into the sky. They should use them to shoot at Israelis."

His point, of course, was that Hamas lacked discipline, the kind of iron, ruthless discipline and security that Hizbollah forged in Lebanon and which the Israeli army was at last forced to acknowledge in southern Lebanon in 2006. Guns are weapons, not playthings for funerals. And Gaza is not southern Lebanon. It would be as well for both sides in this latest bloodbath in Gaza to remember this. Hamas is not Hizbollah. Jerusalem is not Beirut. And Israeli soldiers cannot take revenge for their 2006 defeat in Lebanon by attacking Hamas in Gaza – not even to help Ms Livni in the Israeli elections.

Not that Hizbollah won the "divine victory" it claimed two years ago. Driving the roads of southern Lebanon as the Israelis smashed the country's infrastructure, killed more than a thousand Lebanese – almost all of them civilians – and razed dozens of villages, it didn't feel like a Hizbollah "victory" to me, theological or otherwise. But the Israelis didn't win and the Hizbollah were able to deploy thousands of long-range rockets as well as a missile which set an Israeli warship on fire and almost sank it. Hamas have nothing to match that kind of armoury.

Nor do they have the self-discipline to fight like an army. Hizbollah in Lebanon has managed to purge its region of informers. Hamas – like all the other Palestinian outfits – is infected with spies, some working for the Palestinian Authority, others for the Israelis. Israel has successively murdered one Hamas leader after another – "targeted killing", of course, is their polite phrase – and they couldn't do that without, as the police would say, "inside help". Hizbollah's previous secretary general, Sayed Abbas Moussawi, was assassinated near Jibchit by a missile-firing Israeli helicopter more than a decade ago but the movement hasn't suffered a leader's murder in Lebanon since then. In the 34-day war of 2006, Hizbollah lost about 200 of its men. Hamas lost almost that many in the first day of Israel's air attacks in Gaza – which doesn't say much for Hamas' military precautions.

67 ikabod  Wed, Dec 31, 2008 11:10:35am

As if hamas has preconditions other than inhalation Israel... I'm sure at that point they would be happy to sit down and have a nice chat...

I don't think that anyone has the right to tell Israel to stop fighting. They have the right to defend their country.

How anyone could make excuses for a terrorist group is beyond me. I also notice that so many articles conveniently forget to mention that the border crossings are closed because if left open the suicide bombers would have a field day.

I notice that the apologists for Hamas also forget suicide bombers, the destroyed greenhouses, the failed sewer plants, using their own people as human shields and crying when these people are killed, etc. I can only hope that Israel is willing to finish this fight.

100 realwest  Wed, Dec 31, 2008 11:19:07am

I have followed, as best I can, all of the political punditry and editorials and Op-Ed's that were available on-line. And that includes a lot of the "reporting" of events now unfolding. But I never have seen anything quite so stupid as this.
William Sieghart says

Six months ago the Israeli Government agreed to an Egyptian- brokered ceasefire with Hamas. In return for a ceasefire, Israel agreed to open the crossing points and allow a free flow of essential supplies in and out of Gaza. The rocket barrages ended but the crossings never fully opened, and the people of Gaza began to starve.

And what I'd like to ask him is this: if Hamas wasn't firing those rocket barrages and mortar attacks on Israel, who the hell was? There was no SIX MONTH period of no attacks on Israel.
And, yet again, we get this "sit down and talk without preconditions" bullshit. Has he ever read Hamas' charter? Has he ever asked Hamas to publicly and in writing, renounce their calls for the destruction of the State of Israel? No. And I suspect he hasn't because he knows what Hamas' answer would be.
As I said, this is fairly close to the most stupid opinion column anyone has written to date about this war.

Even if Israel allows the Palestinians to kill 50% of the Jews, the Hamas crowd will not be happy yet (see Poland, circa 1944).

It's sad that people like this insist on waxing poetic about things they don't have a clue about. It is in the Hamas charter that they do NOT negotiate. Period. Why is this so hard for people to understand?

The entire idea of negotiation is simple- compromise: You give this, and we'll give this. The problem is, it is impossible to negotiate with people who do not put value on anything, not even their own life, or the life of their friends, or the life of their family. It's impossible to negotiate with people like this. They might sign a treaty, but the only thing you're doing is wasting perfectly good paper and ink.

I don't think people like the one writing this article will ever realize this.

They wrongly presume civility in all people and then live in denial when reality consistently contradicts them. This is a thought process with which I am unfamiliar. It's not unique to America, but you see it wherever hippie children have aged, free from any sense of obligation to their liberty or the success of their nation.

These brats with access to print and broadcast would not only celebrate their own murders, but would schedule wall to wall coverage of the event. Today's media would sit on the deck of the Titanic and root for the iceberg, while suing the crew and debating whether transgendered passengers should be allowed seats in the lifeboats.

Today's media has become the Pravda of a death cult movement, and no amount of logic, facts or dwindling ad revenues will sway them from their task.

I say let's pay for their plane tickets to the land of the misunderstood victims of their choice, and to paraphrase Sam Adams, "If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!"

Gaza children traumatised as Israeli bombs rain down

GAZA CITY (AFP) — "We are scared... that we can die at any moment," said 11-year-old Mohammed Ayyad, still terrified hours after a massive Israeli bombardment of Hamas government buildings next to his house in Gaza.

Like the rest of Gaza's children, he has been traumatised by the four-day assault on Islamist Hamas targets which has transformed many areas of the overcrowded territory into piles of rubble and shattered glass.

"As they were hitting the centre (of Gaza City), we heard an enormous explosion and our house was filled with dust," he said. "We immediately ran towards the ground floor."

His six-year-old brother Ahmad "peed his pants. We were all scared because the planes are in the sky all the time and we could die at any moment."

I've only seen one. Surprisingly it's from the BBC (looking out the window for flying pigs)...

Taking cover on Sderot front line

The alarm goes and suddenly the whole street is moving in the same direction - to the bomb shelter.

It is by now a well-practised routine for the residents of Sderot. It has to be.

There can be as little as 15 seconds warning of an incoming rocket fired from Gaza.

We were eating in a cafe when one of the day's many sirens sounded.

The nearest shelter happened to be just across the road, a tiny, squat concrete building which looked like a public convenience. We crowded in as another missile landed.

Boy! We sure are civilized these days. We keep fucking around with Hamas and other problems like them. The solution is difficult! Really? Is the solution difficult, or is it simply unpalatable? Ask yourself: How would the Romans handle the Palis? How would the Ancient Greeks handle them? How would Teddy Roosevelt have handled them? Would they have kept fucking around and wasting time and resources on a solution that is not a solution 60 years after the fact? I think not.

Saudi FM criticizes Palestinians

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) — Saudi Arabia's foreign minister on Wednesday blamed Palestinian divisions for Israel's onslaught on Gaza, a reflection of U.S.-allied Arab governments' anger at the Hamas militant group.

Saud al-Faisal made the comments at the opening of an emergency meeting of Arab foreign ministers in the Egyptian capital, convened to try to put together a joint response by the deeply divided Arab nations to the Israeli offensive, which has killed more than 370 Palestinians and sparked outrage across the Middle East.

Pro-U.S. Arab countries — Egypt, in particular — have come under heavy criticism in widespread street protests, as well as from Iran, Hamas, the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, for allegedly not doing enough to stop Israel or help Gazans. Officials and pro-government media in Egypt and Saudi Arabia have responded by blaming Hamas for provoking Israel and accusing the militant group of being a proxy promoting the power of regional rival Iran.

These newspaper twits are so astonishingly naive -- they don't seem to live in the real world. So the leaders of Israel and Hamas haven't sat down without preconditions, and that's the cause of the problem? Let's play a little thought experiment: What's Israel going to say, "How about you only wipe half of us off the map?" It's not as though they haven't made their positions clear through the press, through lower-level contacts, and through their actions.

Such also is the stupidity of our soon-to-be-President O'Boingo. What could he possibly say to ImADinnerJacket that would avoid the eventual train-wreck that's going to be the confrontation between Iran and America? Those to whom it isn't perfectly clear already what the despotic Iranian leadership wants and doesn't want, and what is America's position on those things, should not be in the business of diplomacy and foreign relations. To suggest that the Iranians, or Hamas, are going to come and "negotiate" in good faith is obviously misguided to such a staggering degree that it can be hard to conclude other than such suggestions are disingenuous: nobody could really be that out of touch with reality.

The way to deal with savages such as Hamas et al is to speak a language they understand: raw and merciless power. Israel (and the US) should grind them under their heels, as they will never capitulate.

Ohyes, that's why Ban Ki Moon said:

"The Secretary-General is deeply alarmed (...)
While recognizing Israel's security concerns regarding the continued firing of rockets from Gaza, he firmly reiterates Israel's obligation to uphold international humanitarian and human rights law and condemns excessive use of force leading to the killing and injuring of civilians. He condemns the ongoing rocket attacks by Palestinian militants and is deeply distressed that repeated calls on Hamas for these attacks to end have gone unheeded.
[Link: www.un.org...]

And on December 4th, Egypt showed it was pissed off at Hamas:
Tense Egypt-Hamas relations take a turn for the worse. (...) Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit was quoted as saying on Thursday that months of Egyptian-mediated talks between rivals Hamas and Fatah failed in November because of "Hamas's lack of enthusiasm toward reconciliation." (...)

Gunman wounds 2 Israelis in Denmark mall shooting

A gunman shot and wounded two Israelis working at a packed central Denmark shopping mall Wednesday, police said.

Police spokesman Lars Thede said it was not immediately clear whether the Israelis were targeted because of their nationality. A video surveillance camera showed a swarthy man with a dark mustache and dark hair in his mid-20s pulling out a gun before opening fire.

"We cannot say whether he is Palestinian, Iraqi, Iranian or Bosnian, or where he is from," Thede said.

Total delusion:
Haniyeh: Victory in Gaza closer than it seems:

'Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh said in a televised interview that "victory is closer than one would think" in the Gaza Strip.
"We say to the occupiers: There were stronger men before you who could not win. This is the test our people must stand in Palestine… The result of this aggression, death, and destruction will be victory," he said.'

Sure. Hamas loves death, by their own admission. Soon, they will get the object of their desire (and virgins!).
Victory!

The political leadership of Hamas is probably the most highly qualified in the world. Boasting more than 500 PhDs in its ranks, the majority are middle-class professionals - doctors, dentists, scientists and engineers. Most of its leadership have been educated in our universities and harbour no ideological hatred towards the West. It is a grievance-based movement, dedicated to addressing the injustice done to its people. It has consistently offered a ten-year ceasefire to give breathing space to resolve a conflict that has continued for more than 60 years.

Wow! hamas top dogs are geniuses of course they aren't evil.

Where on earth do people get the idea that people who were hippies when they were kids have failed to develop any sense of obligation to their liberty or their country?
With all due respect, that is an overgeneralized load of bullcrap.
Most hippies grew up just fine and are just as good citizens as those who missed out on the music, drugs and sex of the '60s.
Yippies, SDS and other more radical people may well be in a different category, and perhaps jcbunga meant to refer to them.

This is pure propaganda created for a political goal. William Sieghart agonizes over the deaths of "unarmed . . . public servants . . . at a graduation ceremony" who were probably, as part of the ceremony, loading rockets into a pickup.

Notice that, according to the article, "William Sieghart is chairman of Forward Thinking, an independent conflict resolution agency." Hmmm, wonder what this is?

For a big laugh, check this out: [Link: www.forwardthinking.org...] .

The website is hilarious! According to the description there:

William Sieghart, the founder-chairman of Forward Thinking, has a distinguished career in publishing and the arts. He is the founder of National Poetry Day, the Forward Poetry Prize, The Big Arts Week and Bedtime Reading Week. He founded StreetSmart: Action for the Homeless, and is also a governor of the British Institute of Human Rights. He is chairman of the Arts Foundation and was a member of the Arts Council from 2000-2006 and chairman of its Lottery Panel.

Apparently, among William Sieghart's many skills is creating bedtime stories as is amply demonstrated in the article he wrote.

What a blithering moron and a tool. It would be nice if idiots like this writer would actually do some research and talk to people in the know before spouting off such ridiculous nonsense! There is nothing that is going to get Hamas to stop trying to kill Israelis and Jews other than the total annhilation of the members of Hamas!

As harsh and horrid as I know this will sound, the best thing that Israel can do to secure themselves would be to bring in the Cat bulldozers and push all of the Gazans out of Gaza. After all of the money, incentives, building programs, etc., that have been lavished on the Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank the fact that they continue to engage in terrorist acts precludes them, in my opinion, from any more chances.

My apologies for the harshness of my comments, but I am sick and tired of hearing about the conflicts that continue between the Palestinians and Israel and the fact that so much of the world refuses to take seriously the root causes of this conflict.

Buzz,

Those were not really dangerous rockets. According to Daoud Kuttab (who wrote in the Washington Post) these were mere "amateur rockets" which were "nagging" the residents of some of Israel's southern cities. You can't expect the press to be concerned with piddling nagging amateur rockets - practically fireworks. The Israeli kids should have enjoyed the experience.

Israel has a chance to teach the world a lesson. Make them beg for forgiveness from the world and tell the MSM assholes how stupid they are. Israel has the opportunity, will they do it?

Very sensible plan of action.

Here is something you can use to point something out to anti Semites- and even those who pretend they're not.

When the World and media and even our politicians decry the harm to "innocent" civilians in Gaza, tell them they are all Hamas in every target and every vicinity.

Who says they are all Hamas?

HAMAS does

“It would be easier to dry the sea of Gaza than to defeat the resistance and uproot Hamas, which is in every house of Gaza,” said the statement from the military wing of Hamas.

[Link: www.nytimes.com...]

418 bartok1001  Wed, Dec 31, 2008 3:27:02pm

From Hamas 1988 charter, which I think hasn't been changed:

Article Thirteen: Peaceful Solutions, [Peace] Initiatives and International Conferences: [Peace] initiatives, the so-called peaceful solutions, and the international conferences to resolve the Palestinian problem, are all contrary to the beliefs of the Islamic Resistance Movement. For renouncing any part of Palestine means renouncing part of the religion; the nationalism of the Islamic Resistance Movement is part of its faith, the movement educates its members to adhere to its principles and to raise the banner of Allah over their homeland as they fight their Jihad: “Allah is the all-powerful, but most people are not aware.” From time to time a clamoring is voiced, to hold an International Conference in search for a solution to the problem. Some accept the idea, others reject it, for one reason or another, demanding the implementation of this or that condition, as a prerequisite for agreeing to convene the Conference or for participating in it. But the Islamic Resistance Movement, which is aware of the [prospective] parties to this conference, and of their past and present positions towards the problems of the Muslims, does not believe that those conferences are capable of responding to demands, or of restoring rights or doing justice to the oppressed. Those conferences are no more than a means to appoint the nonbelievers as arbitrators in the lands of Islam. Since when did the Unbelievers do justice to the Believers? “And the Jews will not be pleased with thee, nor will the Christians, till thou follow their creed. Say: Lo! the guidance of Allah [himself] is the Guidance. And if you should follow their desires after the knowledge which has come unto thee, then you would have from Allah no protecting friend nor helper.” Sura 2 (the Cow), verse 120 There is no solution to the Palestinian problem except by Jihad. The initiatives, proposals and International Conferences are but a waste of time, an exercise in futility. The Palestinian people are too noble to have their future, their right and their destiny submitted to a vain game. As the hadith has it: “The people of Syria are Allah’s whip on this land; He takes revenge by their intermediary from whoever he wished among his worshipers. The Hypocrites among them are forbidden from vanquishing the true believers, and they will die in anxiety and sorrow.” (Told by Tabarani, who is traceable in ascending order of traditionaries to Muhammad, and by Ahmed whose chain of transmission is incomplete. But it is bound to be a true hadith, for both story tellers are reliable. Allah knows best.)

HAMAS even admits upfront that any pretense of "PEACE" with Israel is against Islam and any Peace Conference is "an exercise in futility".

This is what they wrote, I didn't make it up.

This jumped out at me from amidst Sieghart's frothy bullshit:

None of them has professed the goal of Islamising Palestinian society, Taleban-style. Hamas relies on secular voters too much to do that.

So he's apparently admitting that if Hamas had their druthers, they would Talibanize "Palestinian society" -- but just the same, Israel ought to sit down at the table with them for a friendly talk.

"Sitting down" implies the possibility of compromise, no? Of the 1000 People Who Run Israel , probably 600 or so are willing to compromise, I'd guess.

Please, someone try to convince me that the far left is not clinically insane.

The far left? I'm pretty sure that anything the Trotsky side of center Left is indeed insane.

One important element of insanity is the inability to recognize information that's not part of your preferred delusion. As the Left has increasingly shut down any open dialog they allow themselves to be informed only by their delusions of choice.

Thus they self-righteously slide down the path of least resistance while imagining they're like pioneers breaking new ground.

432 useless  Wed, Dec 31, 2008 10:03:42pm

I know that I am not as smart as most liberals, mainly because they tell me that, but I would love to have these smart people all sit down and solve all the problems. We can start with liberals sitting down with Christians and pro-life advocates. Next, they can sit down and republicans and come to some firm conclusion of peace.

I'd like to see them cut their teeth on a few groups who don't have it as part of founding elements to commit genocide against a people before they try to "talk" to Hammas.

After that, I'd love to send the liberals and the Useless Nations Security(not) council to Israel and have them debate the finer points of a nations right to self defense right in plain site of Hammas. Let's see how fast they come up with a conclusion.

433 jhn1  Wed, Dec 31, 2008 10:25:52pm

"no preconditions", like
No bombs at meeting
No guns at meeting
No weapons of any type at meeting
No taking of hostages at the meeting
No kidnapping of the other side at the meeting
everyone that arrives, leaves alive, to their own homes at the end of the meeting.

That "no preconditions" sounds pretty unlikely, especially if the top 1000 victims whose deaths would most damage the smooth running of the country of Israel were the potential victim pool.

434 DrCruel  Thu, Jan 1, 2009 7:45:55am

We call this the "Thatcher Gambit", a derivitive of the negotiation policy adopted by Churchill towards German socialists - ie, kill the terrorists until they either see the flaws in their argument or there are no terrorists left. Preferably the latter.

I rather like how negotiations are coming along now. Why change the format?

435 AreaMan  Thu, Jan 1, 2009 11:31:10am

So we have 2000 people, most of whom do not speak each others language, in a big meeting hall where they all jabber away at the same time. Sounds like the setup for a big fight scene.

The truth is simply that the Quartet, the Israeli government, the PA and so on have decided that now is the time for a 2-state solution. The fundamental obstacle to a 2-state solution is Hamas, so they have been nominated for elimination. The Israelis are willing to do the work and they are on hand, so that is that.

re: #2 buzzsawmonkey

Oh, yes indeed; get 'em all to sit down over nice cups of Turkish coffee and some wedges of zaatar bread, and everybody will kiss and make up.

If only Churchill, Stalin, Roosevelt, Mussolini, &c could have sat down together. That would have solved EVERYTHING. The only possible reason that this didn't happen was the lack of jet technology, which would have facilitated the process.

 Frank says:

In every language, the first word after "Mama!" that every kid learns to say is "Mine!" A system that doesn't allow ownership, that doesn't allow you to say "Mine!" when you grow up, has -- to put it mildly -- a fatal design flaw. From the time Mr. Developing Nation was forced to read "The Little Red Book" in exchange for a blob of rice, till the time he figured out that waiting in line for a loaf of pumpernickel was boring as f*ck, took about three generations. ... Decades of indoctrination, manipulation, censorship and KGB excursions haven't altered this fact: People want a piece of their own little Something-or-Other, and, if they don't get it, have a tendency to initiate counterrevolution.
