Tech Note: Replacing Images

Science | Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 5:36:46 pm PST

We’re improving the infrastructure around here again. One visible change is the disappearance of the little blue word balloon icon (), that showed up next to the number of comments at the bottom right of each front page article; it was redundant, because clicking the number of comments went to the same place, so the icon got the axe.

Bye, little blue word balloon. We’ll miss you.

Another change is that the remaining icons in that row now have “rollover” states, meaning that when your mouse cursor passes over them they change color subtly.

One major change you can’t see is the way that row of icons is constructed, but it’s kind of interesting from a techie standpoint, so we’ll explain it and those of you not interested in the nuts and bolts can skip ahead to what will inevitably become an open thread.

Previously, those icons were simple PNG images. The new structure uses an unordered list, combined with the Phark image replacement technique to display the icons as background images instead of <img> tags. This method is more accessible to screen readers, and also lets us achieve that rollover effect through pure CSS, without any Javascript.

Here’s a simplified version of what the list looks like in HTML:

The CSS code removes the bullet style from the unordered list, and floats the list to the right. The list items are all floated left, so they appear horizontally instead of the default vertical arrangement. A 4-pixel margin is added to create some space between the icons.

The links themselves are set to a fixed width and height, their display type is set to ‘block’, then the text inside them is moved off screen by setting the text-indent property to negative 10000 pixels. The background-repeat and background-position properties for all the links are set.

Then we can set the background images for the links, like so:

From an accessibility standpoint, this is an improvement; screen readers don’t pay attention to CSS, so they will see (and read) the text inside the links, while standard browsers will show the background image and no text.

The rollover effects are achieved with a nifty trick that uses only one image. Here’s the complete PNG file for the email icon, to show how it’s done:

email

Notice that both image states are combined into one file. Since the width of the links was explicitly defined as 16 pixels, we’re only going to see 16 pixels of the image at a time when it’s used as the background. And we can change to the rollover state simply by changing the background-position of the image, like so:

This instantly slides the image 20 pixels to the left (because the second image in our combined file begins 20 pixels from the left), so the rollover image now shows in that little 16 pixel area.

Image rollovers and increased accessibility, without a single line of Javascript — but wait, there’s more! The other big advantage of this technique: by using background images for this repeating element (the row of icons appears at the bottom of every front page post) instead of image files, there are far fewer calls to the server to display the page.

We’re now in the planning stages for converting the comment icons (that appear at the top right of each comment) to a similar system, which could result in a big improvement in the loading time of pages with lots of comments. And we know you’re as excited about that as Stinky and I am.

It's not as simple as all that.

I didn't understand most of it, in fact, the only part I understood was that this is somehow an improvement and it paves the way for more improvements!
So that's great!

I'm not complaining, but about the embedded videos? I liked the links better. In the embeds, I often can't tell what it is before I click, or how long it's going to be.
Also, although I mute them and move on, I can't close them once I've started them.
Thanks for everything, Charles.

So far as I'm concerned, it is. I have a glass of indifferent merlot, a couple bottles of quite good pinot noir to go with dinner, and a stellar bottle of champagne to toast in the new year.

So, yeah. This is the NYEDT.

Thats been my beef with Youtube vids forever. No freaking STOP button. As in, I don't want to watch anymore, you can stop taking my bandwidth now. Youtube never thought of adding a "Stop loading this vid" button? Sometimes I think every product, once perfected, gets sent to the Suck department where one thing is added or taken away to make it suck.

Like my Mr Coffee, which pours down the side of the damn pot. Didn't they invent the spout back in the bronze frikkin age? Mr Coffee can't get it right yet?

118 Kreuzueber Halbmond  Wed, Dec 31, 2008 6:06:32pm

May the New Year be filled with old understanding.

TANSTAAFL

After the War of the Almonds, the Land of Kulumar was the richest and most powerful of all.

Its fields were bountiful and its granaries were full. Its flocks were fat and sleek. The Kulumese were proud and productive. They worked and they rejoiced in the highest standard of living known.

Sire, the Generous, surveyed all this plenty and said: "Surely a country as rich as Kulumar should provide food and housing and garments for our less fortunate. I will ask the Lawmakers to levy a tax on the workers to provide this."

And the Lawmakers, each of whom hoped one day to become Sire, levied the taxes. They then said: "Let there also be free circuses for those who do not work. And let there be soft hassocks and free food and wines for those who watch the circuses."

And the Lawmakers levied more taxes.

When the workers of Kulumar heard of the free circuses, the soft hassocks, and the food and wines, and then figured their now monstrous taxes, they said: "This is for us."

The farmers left the fields. The shepherds abandoned their flocks. The weavers laid down their shuttles. The blacksmiths cooled their forges. All the Kulumese were watching the free circuses.

Plenty turned to scarcity. No longer was there abundant food. Garments were hard to come by. The Kulumese did not even have camel chips to heat their tents.

Prices rose and rose. And the Lawmakers raised taxes again and again. (It was the only thing they knew how to do.)

Misery and gloom replaced joy and pride.

And Sire, the Generous, who was well intentioned, went to the Wise Man of the Mountain and said: "Wise One, I have tried to give the good life to my people, but they no longer want to work. Food and goods are scarce. Prices are outrageous. Taxes are even more so. Give me a solution."

And the Wise Man of the Mountain replied in Kulumese: "TANSTAAFL."

"There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch."

I now am of the thinking that as the car enters a state that all of the occupants arrived at the same time. Since I recognized Steve Earle (whom I adore, even if he is a moonbat), I assume it's Copperhead Road?

Now the revenue man wanted granddaddy bad;
Headed up the holler with everything he had.
Before my time, but I have been told,
He never come back from Copperhead Road.

jaunte- the cork issue is actually an lively issue in some wine circles. Natural cork is problematic with availability, cork taint, etc.; the synthetic corks haven't really taken off and come with their own issues like ruining certain types of corkscrews. Screw tops are just fine for wines, but it's still just viewed as inferior. It's so gauche, you know?

Here is a question that has always bothered me. Does the New Year come to someone in Bar Harbor ME before Cleveland OH? My brothers and I always had a contest as to who would get to (insert state name here) first by cramming ourselves as close to the windshield of the car as possible. I now am of the thinking that as the car enters a state that all of the occupants arrived at the same time. But the New Year arriving thing OTOH has me thinking that since Bar Harbor is a good 600 plus miles east of Cleveland that it will see 2009 first..... Thoughts?

Is Cleveland on Central time? Of so, Yes, Maine gets to the new year first. If not, it's degrees of difference, not time zones. HOWEVER, based on sunrise time, you win!

Sunrise Jan. 1:
Cleveland, 7:53 AM
Bar Harbor, 7:36 AM

(I'm such a research geek, I had to look it up.)

Nothing more disappointing in one's wine experience than a bad corked wine.

Pleasure dome, Goddess.

There twice five miles of fertile ground
With walls and towers girdled round,
Where blossomed many an incense bearing tree,
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills
And forests ancient as the hills,
Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.

But o, that vast romantic chasm
That slanted down a green slope athwart a cedern cover:
A savage place! As holy and enchanted
As ere beneath a waning moon was haunted
By woman, wailing for her demon lover!

One does not sniff the cork; that's meaningless. One squeezes the cork, to see if it's still firm but springy

My preference is to suck the cork -- especially a firm, springy cork -- but maybe that's just me.
