In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately treasure dome decree
Where Alph the sacred river ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.

(from memory--I may have misquoted some bits)

Pleasure dome, Goddess.

There twice five miles of fertile ground
With walls and towers girdled round,
Where blossomed many an incense bearing tree,
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills
And forests ancient as the hills,
Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.

But o, that vast romantic chasm
That slanted down a green slope athwart a cedern cover:
A savage place! As holy and enchanted
As ere beneath a waning moon was haunted
By woman, wailing for her demon lover!

Yes.

Since I was using Cristabel in a story, I ended up rereading a lot of commentary on Coleridge. Total laudanum addict, poor man. In very poor health most of his life, unhappily married, unrequited love, lost friendships, the works.

Fascinating that he held together as well as he did.

My main point of irritation with him is that he never finished anything! Cristabel ends after 600 lines with the poem hanging!

Turtle Stack

"They are competing for basking space if there is not enough room for both of them or they are competing for higher temperature from the heating bulb (or both). Try a larger basking area and/or slightly higher bulb temp. (or lower the bulb closer to the basking area). If you have them outside (you mentioned a pond) then just try a larger basking area. If the basking area is already large enough for everyone, just leave them alone.

Either way, they are competing for the best basking site. This is actually the behavior that inspired the story, "Yurtle the turtle". I have also seen turtles do this in captivity and in the wild. I used to call them turtle "pile-ups" when I was growing up in Florida."*

Was that the interruption?

A man from Purlock, who wouldn't go away. It completely interrupted Coleridge's opium vision.

Which is why the poem ends the way it does.

Happy New Year to all of Lizardom.

I am happy to report hubby is still progressing nicely. He actually walked a bit down the hall today. Doing well off the vent and with his dandy trache collar. We'll head down to Phoenix early Saturday for a visit. I hate only seeing him on weekends, but I think it's actually good for him - he has to do things for himself and it will only serve him well in the long run.

Thank you for all the pray-ers in this bunch! They have certainly helped!

Israel's goal is to stir up all the shit it can.

Hamas, judging by its rhetoric and suicide bombers, is not afraid of death.

To paraphrase Gen. Sherman.
Death is the remedy that our enemies have chosen, and I say let us give them all they want.

Obama will enter office on a high and finish in a slow, dull, arching downslope.

Phrases like "That is just a distraction" will enter popular culture and be rewarded with cynical guffaws.

The man is completely malleable and will do whatever seems "smart" in terms of getting credit for "being smart". But the results (and lack thereof) will catch up with him.

And the whole "continuation of Bush's policies" thing will catch up with him in 2012, as there will be very few of Bush's policies that he will change.

OMG, that brings back a memory!

When I was in middle school. I was so into student government. I worked on every project. I had my jeart set on being president in 8th grade, and honestly, I'd earned it.

Then this JERK of a show off decided he'd run (having never done anything for SGA), and promised everyone he'd get us a pool.

When they announced he'd won, you could have heard a pin drop. Only his best friend and I applaued. I was just praying I wouldn't cry when my best friend loudly snapped, "Well, I just hope to God he doesn't mess the whole thing up."

That started me laughing and saved my pride.

Fireworks were being used as part of the performance at the club. Got out of control and people were trampled.

I'm sure he finished all his dope.

There's a guy from my home town who used to abuse my brother - who was the very model of the gentle, passive big guy - and in fact stole his senior prom mug.

He worked for years at a gas station in town. I always made it a point to make him fill my car and check the various fluids.

Good for you! Sisters ROCK.

I've never seen anything like this before. The British embassy in Tehran was stormed and breached yesterday and the BBC basically suppressed the news. Okay, they covered it but only with the most cursory, hidden, low key and abbreviated coverage.

First I saw it in Gateway
[Link: gatewaypundit.blogspot.com...]
then I went to the BBC to see how they were dealing with it. I couldn't find it. It wasn't on the front page where it belonged. It wasn't any sort of sidebar to their Gaza coverage. It wasn't even in their Middle East page. I only came across it from a link from some blog.

Here is the BBC coverage of a successful attack on the British embassy in Iran.
[Link: news.bbc.co.uk...]
It is hideously understated. They leave out the fact that their national embassy is firebombed.

I'm not going to mince words here. I know in my heart that the BBC is downplaying this story because they do not want anybody to get mad at Muslims when the BBC is in full attack mode against the Jews.

This is beyond pathetic. It is pathological. In some twisted way, it reminds me of Hitler during World War II diverting resources away from his war effort to his death camps.

Bamboo vinegar

Bamboo vinegar is a by-product of bamboo carbonization. Herbal properties include the powerful ability to assist in the discharge of unnecessary waste matter and toxins from the human body. Bamboo vinegar has also been used in health food drinks, cosmetics, medicines, and horticultural products.

I've finally learned to bend bamboo successfully. I'me bending parts for a bamboo catwheel. I'm drunk and playing with a propane torch indoors; What could possibly got wrong?

could be drinking Everclear while using the propane torch, then while brushing some hair out of your eyes, accidently light the Everclear on fire. While jumping up, the liquid splashes on the drapes catching them on fire, the propane torch sets the cat on fire when it drops to the floor, he commences to run around the room setting everything else on fire. The house quickly becomes fully involved and owing to the wind outside quickly spreads the fire to the neighbors houses. The fire department can't get their engines started to respond in time thus becoming the third worst conflagration in the history of the USA, third only to the Great Chicago Fire and the San Francisco Earthquake fire.

All because you wanted to save a couple of bucks on a kitty toy. ;-)>

This sounds fun...

Clemson to be host of robotics competition

CLEMSON — On Saturday, Jan. 3, teenaged gearheads from across the Carolinas will converge on Clemson University to enter an unusual competition.

More than 100 high school students and mentors are expected to gather at the Madren Center's BellSouth Auditorium to learn details about this year's For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Palmetto Regional Robotics Competition.

The competition pits teams of high schoolers against one another in a quest to build the best robot. The contest, which began with 28 teams 20 years ago, is expected to draw more than 1,600 teams this year.

This year marks the sixth annual Palmetto Regional competition and the second year Clemson has been host of the event.

At 10 a.m. Saturday, the student competitors gathered at Clemson will view a live webcast from FIRST headquarters in New Hampshire announcing the guidelines for this year's game. Each team subsequently will receive a kit with parts with which to build their mechanized creations.

Representatives from 21 teams — 18 from South Carolina and three from North Carolina — are expected in Clemson Saturday to receive their marching orders.

Each team will be allowed six weeks to build a robot no heavier than 120 pounds that can complete a specified, but as-yet-unknown, task in specified amount of time. The teams will ship their assembled robots to FIRST, which will in turn bring them back to Clemson March 26-28 for the regional competition at Littlejohn Coliseum.

Arabs draft UN resolution to halt Gaza attacks

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. Security Council held an emergency meeting Wednesday night on an Arab request for a binding and enforceable resolution condemning Israel and halting its military attacks on Gaza.

But the draft resolution circulated by Libya on behalf of the 22-member Arab League was immediately rejected by the United States as "unbalanced" and "one-sided" because it makes no mention of halting the Hamas rocket attacks that led to the Israeli offensive.

Sudan's U.N. ambassador said a resolution likely would not be adopted before Monday, when a delegation of Arab foreign ministers is due to arrive.

Here's the list of Arabs...

Sudan's U.N. Ambassador Abdalmahmood Abdalhaleem Mohamed said he did not foresee the adoption of a resolution before Monday because a delegation of Arab foreign ministers is flying to New York "to give a boost to the diplomatic activity here."

He said the ministers — from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Qatar, Lebanon, Libya, Egypt and Morocco — would arrive Sunday or Monday. Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa has also asked Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas "to lead the diplomatic campaign in New York," he said.

Yeah, they'll be fair.

I hope no one here knows this cashier

Police in Kentucky are looking for a customer who succeeded in paying for a $2 order at a fast-food restaurant with a phony $200 bill featuring a picture of President Bush and a depiction of the White House with a lawn sign saying, “We like broccoli.”

Authorities say the female cashier at a Dairy Queen in Danville even gave the culprit $198 in change.

The cartoonish bill also depicted an oil well on one side of the bill.

Because there is no actual $200 currency, the culprit could face a charge of theft by deception but not counterfeiting, authorities said.

Yes, but the episode is from 1962. I guess Rod was stuck with the old technology. I could swear I saw the strings.

The Masks is on now. Another gem.

I think it was whatever the studio had in their warehouse.

If you are a TZ fan you should consider getting the definitive collection on DVD. Even if they were just the uncut versions of each episode would be excellent, but the extras are a wonderful plus.

Laura Bush is a class act. Policy disputes aside the quality of a spouse says something. Bush and McCain do not like each other but they both married intelligent, gracious and productive women. Their beauty is not skin deep, they age well. Michelle Obama is a grievance machine. She does not age well.

I do feel Mrs. Bush caught a lot of flak unfairly. Any WAB gets is too little and wholly deserved.

I think Israel's effort to develop a missile defense is the only serious way to proceed now. Here is the latest on "Iron Dome" the anti-missile system Israel is building. It is not a dream. It is becoming a reality.

[Link: frontpagemagazine.com...]

Despite conflicting media reports, Israel’s Ministry of Defense (MOD) insists that the Iron Dome anti-missile system will be operational in early 2010.

This is really an extension of the security fence that has been so successful against terror attacks. If it works at all, it will neutralize Hamas. If it works well, it will neutralize Hezbollah.

It's a shame to throw tomorrow's scientists and doctors against the diseased rats in Gaza's hardened bunkers. The security fence allowed Israel to end the intefadeh and rejoin Europe and the West. It led to prosperity and a mini Golden Age. It also proved to be successful as a public relations tool because the Palestinians could no longer peddle images of the their victim status from Israeli policing and retaliation for terror. A missile fence could turn Gaza's image from victims to losers.

Additionally, it would allow Hamas to keep Gaza because it would render them a good deal less dangerous. As long as Hamas has Gaza the Palestinian movement, Israel's number one enemy, is hopelessly divided. If Hamas reverted to PA hands Gaza would be more dangerous than it is now.

Straight up is not a big problem, at the top the bullet tumbles, and returns at terminal velocity, not fired velocity. Not nearly enough to penetrate a roof, or a skull for that matter. It's the one fire in a ballistic arc 45° those maintain spin stability and enough velocity to kill.

Mythbuster did a section on it. As well as had a physics prof who was a ballistics nut.

There is one other point about Iron dome worth mentioning. Even though it is expensive to knock down an incoming ($25k for an anti-missile missile), if it works it would only need to be an effective stopgap until something better can be devised. For reasons I stated above in #554, the value of a missile defense is almost inestimable. It would be a game changed, and produce a new paradigm politically and militarily just as the security fence did.

A lot of people say that Reagan's Star Wars, even when little more than vaporware, hastened the downfall of the Soviet Union by dispiriting them in their huge investment in missile superiority.

re: #554 Luigi

I think Israel's effort to develop a missile defense is the only serious way to proceed now. Here is the latest on "Iron Dome" the anti-missile system Israel is building. It is not a dream. It is becoming a reality.

[Link: frontpagemagazine.com...]

I was commenting on this and the US radar system on BC when people asked about Phalanx and ABM regarding Gaza. Allow a repost.

Phalanx was for terminal phase point defense, not for boost phase intercept. While some sort of very high speed interceptors could work for longer range ballistic missiles, that is why the Navy is planning to station advanced Aegis platforms off the coast of Korea, it doesn’t work for the low altitude short range weapons seen here. Given time the brain surgeons should come up with new toys to address this problem.

Similar issue, The US ABM C&C system is for initiating Patriot/Arrow intercepts of Iranian M/IRBMs, not tactical weapons like Katyushas. However it probably could feed targeting information to counter-battery artillery or terminal defense systems. The employment of counter-battery is inhibited by the Philistines use of civilian cover for their operations. Technically it should be very possible to set up a system by which any missile launch from within Gaza is replied to within seconds. If the CEP (circular error of probability) of the response is (for argument I have no classified knowledge here) such that at the 90% confidence level all impacts are within 25 yards of the aim point then launch crews would face a high loss rate. For normal battle field conditions that would be excellent. It is possible that Israel may choose to go that route in the future. Customary International Law would support them doing so. Nevertheless we all know that the first time the system responded to an attack from a school yard or a hospital the political impact would be a tsunami. The fact that the missiles were themselves being launched not only from schools but at schools would be ignored. That is why the Israelis are using the much more expensive method of having helicopters act as flying artillery. Eventually the response times will improve but it is still an imperfect answer.

There's a lesson here somewhere...

Woman gives naked intruder a painful squeeze

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office says an 88-year-old woman fended off a naked intruder by grabbing the man's crotch and squeezing.

Deputy Paul McRedmond says the man got into the house Tuesday through a sliding door. He backed the woman into her living room and pushed her face down onto a chair.

That's when the woman reached behind and squeezed. The man tore free and fled.

I hope she had long, sharp nails.

I thank all of you for your comments, input and opinions that have helped to keep me sane this past year. It has been a tough 2008 for me. I’m in the process of witnessing my 93-year-old father slowly die. Alzheimer’s and the other perils of old age are just not fun. And I think his end is near.

I don’t have enough fingers and toes to count those younger than me that I have seen buried, and it isn’t easier even when those loved ones are elderly. But that’s how life just is, and I’m very familiar with the end game. I look to the future generations in my children and grandchildren to keep it all going, and try not to focus on that which was.

So I hope 2009 will be better for me and those of you who still thrive, think, enjoy, and keep moving forward in a good direction. I have hope for all of you who really are looking for “better”. Don’t count on anyone else to do that for you; do it yourself.

So he goes, "5...4...3...2...1...HAPPY NEW YEAR!" and runs over to some random blonde woman, grabs her hands, and they both start jumping up and down and making squealing noises.

Kathy Griffin was co-hosting with Anderson (big surprise, that crazy witch on CNN) and she said, "Am I supposed to act like that didn't just happen?"

gosh I missed it...

We have a SnowCrash among us here too...that was one of my favorites. It was his first, I believe.

Also, I just really dig the name "Shaftoe" for some reason.

His books of late on the Victorian/scientific era...those are quite difficult for me to read, up there with The Silmarillion. Tedious. I only read the first one, had to quit the series, wasn't up to the intellectual challenge.

Regarding my "could it be, Lizards?" Yes. My 1000th post. Hehehehehe!

A newly graduated CIA agent gets his first assignment: his superiors tell him he is to go to a small town in rural Ireland and meet his contact in the local pub. The contact is using the name O'Malley and he will identify him with the challenge: "it's a beautiful day today" to which the proper reply is "yes, but it will rain tomorrow."

The young agent arrives in the town at mid-day, goes to the pub, and finds it empty save for the bartender. He asks the bartender where he can find O'Malley to which the bartender replies; "now which O'Malley do you be needin? There's Paddy O'Malley who lives out by the church, or Shamus O'Malley who lives around the corner, or Finbar O'Malley the constable, or Father O'Malley at the rectory and finally there's me- Danny O'Malley at your service!"

The young agent figures he has to start somewhere so he leans over to the bartender and in a low voice says: "It's a beautiful day today." To which the bartender answers: "Oh, you want O'Malley the spy! He lives right across the street..."

Zionists don't use coded phrases on the internet.

Stunty would be if they did it every week...it's just a once-a-year affair (if that).

They got a bee in their bonnet about having an Rangers/Islanders game in the original Yankee Stadium House That Epstein Demolished, but apparently Yankees fans the most spoiled, narccisitic, know-nothing, over-indulged fanbase in all the USA threw a tantrum and wanted the last sporting event in Yankee Stadium The House That Epstein Demolished to be a meaningless regular-season win over the Baltimore Orioles.

I was in the Back Bay Fens last week having some pizza and chowder, wondering what the atmosphere in the neighborhood would be like this time next year when the NHL and Red Sox agree to have the Bruins play an outdoor hockey game at Fenway Park on New Year's Day 2010 (Pats owner Kraft would be much more likely to go along with such a request, but Gillette Stadium is something of a long haul from the heart of Boston).

Yankees fans the most knowledgeable, loveable, wonderful fanbase in all the USA threw down the gauntlet and wanted the last sporting event in Yankee Stadium The House That Ruth built sported a meaningful regular-season win over the Baltimore Orioles with "Moose" Mussina finally getting his 20th win to retire in glory.

Phhttt- red sux- letting Tampon Bay beat you- phhttt- you bet you are waiting for 2009!

Wow...it's like playing 'Count the Mistakes'.

I fail to see how-

A) The last game @ Yankee Stadium was significant other than maybe the Yanks beat out Toronto for 3rd place with a win

B) Find me anyone outside the five boroughs who think Yankees fans are wonderful, knowledgeable and loveable fanbase in the USA

C) How Tampa Bay beating Boston in the American Legue Championship series managed to elevate the Yankees beyond anything but finishing a distant 3rd place, limping into that glorious position courtesey of a bloated payroll and non-stop sacchrine sentimentality about the House That Ruth Built The Stadium Where The Greatest Comeback in All Of Baseball was sealed...

Thank you for your concern. And I know exactly how you feel. My mother died in 2003. She was cremated and when my sick father came to live with me two years ago, the box containing her ashes came along. I put them on the end table, and every morning when we had our coffee, he and I would pat the box gently and say “Good Morning”. I think another box of ashes will be coming soon. So then, I will have two boxes to say good morning to all by myself. Strange. My only surviving brother and surviving sister have asked me what I will do with those boxes of ashes. I think I’ll find a lovely place on a beach with turquoise waters and sprinkle them both together there and tell them in a prayer that they are now together in Paradise. I will not cry. It isn’t about me, it will be about them.

Not one kiss between them. But she did go over to Bloomberg and kiss him on the lips and on each cheek. Now Whaddya think about that?

re: #712 mjwsatx
Thanks Mike for the link. I think with my Pop I’ve already been through most of those phases, and everything I read there is quite correct. Pop has been in a nursing home for the last 18 months which is not Medicaid supported, therefore the cost is about $6K+ a month out-of-pocket. But he’s being well cared for although Medicare does not contribute. I sometimes think it’s a good thing we’re rich (NOT). My best advice, having been through this situation, is that those who can, should purchase long-term care insurance while they're young that will cover the cost of those nursing homes. It is not cheap, nor is it readily available to older people like me who have pre-existing conditions. But when I now consider the annual cost against the premiums, it is worthwhile for those who may live to be well into their 90’s and will need it.

I know but they still trotted him out for a few minutes and it was heartbreaking. En I'm not watching it any more. It's not the same without Dick.

I was just wondering if they still parade him in front of the camera to drool on himself

He is a New Years institution and I thought he does rather well for himself given his stroke. He has made vast improvements since he had it.

When they take him off, I'll be finished with that New Years tradition and go to another channel. It certainly isn't the entertainment that would make me watch their NY special.

Having gone through the pain of dealing with an aging parent with Alzheimers I really feel for what you are going through. Wind chill here is in negative numbers..that was the actual temperature, which now is 15! We already have heavy flannel sheets, etc., and a very warm, flannel-covered duvet on the bed.

They said that this New Years Eve, in NYC, nearly broke the record for a low temp. Some of the people literally looked frozen, as they had to be there early, go through a security check, and stand in place for hours!

Have a wonderful 2009!

Mike: I’m sorry that you had to go through what I’m faced with now. For me it is just part of the ugly side of living with reality. I don’t necessarily have the family support emotionally; some run and hide, some just ignore, some give silly advice, and some just don’t care. So it is up to me. But I will not abandon my Pop regardless. I’ll keep my commitments to him, retain my values, integrity, and character and do what I have to do to get him and me through it. My emotional support comes from the Almighty, and you just can’t beat that. Thanks again for speaking to me about this.

A late or early Happy New Year. 3 glasses of champagne and I was curled up and snoring long before midnight, but the neighbor's fire crackers woke me up. Well they woke up the dogs who woke me up. Thought this would be an Advil morning, but holding up surprisingly well. A good sign for 2009? (Rhyme unintentional, but it does have a ringgg to it.) In the 60s today and 70 tomorrow with lots of sunshine here in TX. Everyone I know is sick from the hot, cold, rain, sun, bipolar weather behavior.

Grandma..I can empathize. In a similar position with mom, but I do have long-term care for myself. She has a lovely little place even though she doesn't always quite remember where things are in it. I'd consider moving there for the oatmeal raisin cookies alone!

In a speech at Harvard last November, Harvard physicist John Holden, President-elect Obama's choice to be his science adviser as director of the White House Office of Science and Technology, presented a "top 10" list of warming solutions.

Topping the list was "limiting population," as if man was a plague upon the earth. This is a major tenet of green dogma that bemoans the fact that the pestilence called mankind comes with cars, factories and overconsumption of fossil fuels and other resources.
