The window of registration opportunity is open for a limited time. Standard admonitions apply:

Read all the rules.

Commit them to memory.

Don’t register with a proxy.

Don’t register with a throwaway email address.

Don’t register more than one account.

Don’t be a jerk.

Don’t be a troll.

Do play nice.

And then everything will be groovy.

UPDATE at 1/1/09 8:52:59 pm:

And the door slams shut with 67 hatchlings on New Year’s Day.

The end of the newspaper era has begun:

Connecticut Lawmaker Petitions for Newspaper Bailout

Following the government's billion dollar bailout to the automobile and financial sectors, a Connecticut lawmaker is petitioning to save the local newspaper, Reuters reported.

Frank Nicastro, who represents Connecticut's 79th assembly district, is asking the state government to do something to salvage The Bristol Press, a paper that may fold within days, along with The Herald. The papers' publisher, Journal Register, is in danger of being crushed under millions of dollars in debt, and can't afford to keep them open.

"The media is a vitally important part of America," Nicastro said, particularly local papers that cover news ignored by big papers and television and radio stations.

Seattle police shoot, kill man in German uniform

The New Year was scarcely two hours old when Seattle police were forced to shoot a man wearing a World War II German military uniform in the University Park District.

He died later at Harborview Medical Center. Authorities have not identified him.

Police say he aimed a military rifle with a long bayonet attached at them and refused to put it down.

The man, in his early 20s, was rushed to Harborview Medical Center, police spokesman Jeff Kappel said.

Inside the residence from which the armed man emerged to confront police a SWAT team found Nazi regalia and alcohol, Kappel said.

I hate Seattle Nazis.

I had this weird pain a few years ago whenever I ate certain foods...i thought it was just heartburn and I would eat a tums or chug some Maalox. But, it was persistent. I went to the doctor, they ordered an upper GI screen and it turns out I had an ulcer. That is something you cannot ignore. I hope it's nothing major, but be sure.

They are actually at our local CVS Pharmacy!

Do we have any huge Bogies planning to visit our solar system anytime this decade?

Nothing threatening for twenty years or so (potential new discoveries excepted). There are smaller ones a few meters across zooming by the Earth fairly often, we usually spot them on the way outbound! Our program found several large transneptunian objects in the several hundred mile diameter range along with a hundred or so near Earth objects and several hundred thousand main belt asteroids. There are several similar efforts around the world, mostly automated.

Pass the place most days.

It's usually been tippexed into "Bollock Halls". The swine!

Low sunspot activity is thought to lead to Ice Ages:

"2007 is now considered to be close to nadir of a solar cycle; the end of a low point in sunspot minimums. Low sunspot activity = drought conditions. High sunspot activity = good rainfall. It looks to have been a low sunspot period until now, but we are coming out of that and rising up to next peak 2011/12."

With regards to Arlo Guthrie's "City of New Orleans"

readin' of the New York Times and Tribune,
liberal news print; often prone to rail...
fifteen pages; fifteen more than needed,
Three subscribers and twenty-five stacks of ads.
All along the east coast towns you see
The papers going out for free
and still nobody seems to read or care...
Tellin' tales in random spews
and passing rumors off as news
It's grave yard of lies no one can use...
Good morning America, how are you?
Say don't you know me, I was your best friend
"I'm the lies and spin you used to call the paper
and now the blogs are here and I will will have to end"/

And now we see it won't just seem'
to fade into a bad dream
the "papers" have just got the "news"
"that one" they backed not long ago
could field their dog and pony show
and the liberal news is all we need to hear...
Good night, America we love you
socialized news, paid for from our tax fund;
it's the circus of the media, god love 'em.
And you'll never know the truth once they are done.

I don't see a downside yet. Well, except for that 'open in the back' aspect. Prolly leave a stripe of uncleaned area unless you rolled around a lot.

Or, just pin it closed.
Or wear it backwards.
Endless possibilities.

Iran the bathrooms where that way. One corner the toliet, flush with the floor, another a shower head. A faucet on the wall, if you wanted you bought a claw foot tub and slide under the faucet. In the middle of the floor a drain. The tub would drain on the floor and run to the floor drain. Hose the the room down, done!

I have this friend and we played church music, we played the antiphonal brass parts in this little cubby hole up 30 ft in a cathedral wall. We were in there waiting for our cue to play our bits, and the trumpeter lets loose with an anal blast inspired by a weeks regimen of Ramen noodles and Stag's chili.

The lacquer started peeling off my horn, my eyes watered up, we were all blinded for several minutes, but we all came in on cue. Good thing we memorized the music.

re: #400 rawmuse

I have this friend and we played church music, we played the antiphonal brass parts in this little cubby hole up 30 ft in a cathedral wall. We were in there waiting for our cue to play our bits, and the trumpeter lets loose with an anal blast inspired by a weeks regimen of Ramen noodles and Stag's chili.

The lacquer started peeling off my horn, my eyes watered up, we were all blinded for several minutes, but we all came in on cue. Good thing we memorized the music.

You know what I would comment - but I wont.

It's been done.

But permit me to point out that however evil the subject of that sculpture, it is much admired as a masterpiece of the foundryman's craft - if you wanted a piece of bronze like that but of someone you admired, you couldn't get it.

I personally would cut off the head and leave it at that.

I understand the craft / art appeal of the piece. It needs proper attribution for that. A plaque saying such, and describing the toll of Leninism on Russia and the world.

re: #352 jcm

Iran the bathrooms where that way. One corner the toliet, flush with the floor, another a shower head. A faucet on the wall, if you wanted you bought a claw foot tub and slide under the faucet. In the middle of the floor a drain. The tub would drain on the floor and run to the floor drain. Hose the the room down, done!

Many, many years ago, I saw a segment of "This Old House" (a PBS show about renovating vintage houses and stuff, and which is also forever showing new products, materials, and techniques for improving houses) where they showed a household bathroom in some European country (I forget now which country) that worked more or less like described above. Only in this case, the toilet was a conventional sit-down toilet rather than a squat toilet, and the tub wasn't a clawfoot tub but a more modern-style tub... that one could move around in the bathroom. I don't think you had to move the tub to the sink faucet to fill it, though, it probably had it's own fixture (it's been long enough that I don't remember the details). It did drain onto the floor, though. And there was a drain in the middle of the tiled floor.

got comfortable, and nature did the rest, except that the resulting smell was bad, even out in the open, at least until the breeze moved it away... down hill.

next thing i heard was cries of anguish and disgust from the rest of my TOW team, and then the sound of the vehicle being started.

it was so bad, they displaced 100 meters, just to get fresh air. %-)

As I said, my grandmother meant well, she was just...well, grandma. She was always finding great new gadgets. Some of which actually worked.

On a serious note, one of the greatest gifts my mother ever gave me was that she never, ever spoke badly about my grandparents in front of us.

Seeking the secret to walrus reproduction

Jocko belly-flopped onto the artificial ice floe in the middle of his Vallejo pool and rocked back and forth - a blubbery portrait of walrus bliss.

His counterparts in the wild should have it so good. Their Arctic ice floes are shrinking because of global warming, which means their numbers could decrease.

That possibility makes the breeding behavior of Jocko and his two female friends, who live at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, fascinating to scientists - to the point that one researcher is creating an artificial vagina to entice the 2,200-pound Pacific walrus into sexual acts that can be measured and quantified.

Many jokes in this article.

It's very time consuming going through all of your thoughts and machinations. This is just a question and not an affront on anyone's sensibilities. I like this place and the people.

I find the LGF Spy very helpful, it allows me to follow which threads are active which are not and allows me to follow active threads pretty much in real time. When I see a comment that is directed to me, or that I want to respond to I refresh that page and comment, the rest of the time I just watch the LGF spy.

East St. Louis is rapidly becoming depopulated--it has about 30,000 people now--which means that even a few killings really rack up the murder rate.

Well boys and girls, I've just been informed that tomorrow we'll be switching our bedroom from the present location to the guest room, and the guest room to our bedroom.

No, no. Don't pity me. This day had to come. We've been in this same old room for almost 15 years, and that's longer than I've slept in one room in my whole life.

Besides, it could be worse. I could be moving our bedroom to the guest room, and the guest room to the office room, and the office room to the room presently serving as the bedroom. So I've got that going for me.

Gonna be a busy day. So, as we say here in Booger County before turning in after getting news like this...Dammit all.

East St. Louis is rapidly becoming depopulated--it has about 30,000 people now--which means that even a few killings really rack up the murder rate.

Police: Suspicious wife who demands to smell husband's genitals beaten

PORT ST. LUCIE — Police are seeking an arrest warrant for a man accused of hitting his wife after she asked to smell his penis to determine whether he was cheating with another woman, according to a police report released Wednesday.

The 37-year-old victim told investigators her husband of three years punched her face and kicked her arms and legs Monday night after she accused him of having an affair.

The victim said she told her 25-year-old husband as he used the restroom "to display his penis to her so that she can smell it," the report states.

She said she asked him to show his genital area so she could determine whether he was cheating with another woman.

As she went to sniff her husband's penis, he reportedly punched her mouth and started to kick her when she was on the floor. The husband then fled the scene.

Police saw bruises and red marks on the victim's mouth, legs and arms.

She became uncooperative when told a warrant would be filed for her husband's arrest.

How come there are no hearings in the Congress where ..."suspension of belief..." is brought up to the military members on the ground?

How come the Democratic legislator from Pennsylvania is not calling for aggressive action against the murderers who terrorized the people of Baghdad for so long before the US Marines and Soldiers were able to chase them out of the various communities and ensure that women could go to the market without being abducted, raped and murdered?

Where are the people who said the surge wouldn't work... and why aren't we hearing from them now?

Ever notice that no old people weigh over 400 lbs?

They had an episode today with a 700-pound man with a tracheotomoy to force oxygen into his lungs who'd been living in an obesity clinic for 4 YEARS and they had closed-circuit footage of him getting fast food delivered to him. At what point do you just give up on a person and redirect your efforts toward someone you can actually help? Astonishing.

Brings me to another point, tomorrow is Women in Black day in my town. The oldest and crankiest women in existence hold up signs that grandmothers should never be holding up. And they always have an opinion about Palestinians and Israelis and tomorrow might be a little more interesting than usual. Now here's what I want to do, get a giant polar bear costume (I've seen them in TV and movies but never in real life), get a boombox, throw on the Beastie Boys and dance across the street from them to make me the center of attention. I think that would make those old women so freaking mad.

Pediatrician put my kid on Atkins a few years ago, it worked very well, but wasn't practicable for the long term. He's grown out of that stage now, and as a teenager is losing more weight than he can eat. I do find that friends that did the South Beach version of Atkins have been able to stay with it for a long time.

one think having the diet in the house did for me was to make me realize how many carbs we actually eat. For instance, if you go out to dinner --let's say Italian. You get bread before the meal, bread with the meal and the meal is pasta. Or at a steak joint, they serve breadsticks, potatoes and corn with the steak. Now, I eat either the bread or the pasta or the potatoes, not all three.

Theory of Special Operations Forces

Upon encountering a snake in the Area of Operation (AO):

* Paratrooper: Kills the snake.

* Armor: Runs over snake, giggles, and looks for more snakes.

* Infantry: "Look, a putty cat. Come 'ere kitty . . . Ouch! Hey, that's not a kitty cat."

* Infantry (alt): "Ugh! Me see snake. Me like snake. Ouch! Me no like snake."

* Army Aviation: Has GPS grid to snake. Couldn't find snake. Back to base for crew rest and the club and some sort of drink called "The Snake"

* Ranger: Plays with the snake, then eats it.

* Ranger (alt): Assaults the snake's home and secures it for use by friendly snakes.

* SEAL: Expends all ammunition, several grenades and calls for naval gunfire in a failed attempt to kill the snake. The snake bites the SEAL then retreats to safety.

* Corps Artillery: Kills snake, but in the process kills several hundred civilians with a massive TOT with three FA BDEs in support. Mission is considered a success and all participants are awarded Silver Stars. (Cooks, Mechanics, Legal Clerks etc.)

* Marine Recon: Follows the snake and gets lost

* Combat Controller: Guides the snake elsewhere.

* Para-Rescue: Wounds the snake in first encounter, then feverishly works to save the snake's life.

* Special Forces: Makes contact with the snake, builds rapport, wins its heart and mind, then trains it to kill other snakes.

That will result in a big increase in casualties.

Reading some of the comments on that ABC page. Wow, some people are terrifying.

Here's some good ones:

Madoff deserves to be executed for all the harm he has done to so many

Holy Crap!

See you in hell W!

Wonder what the writer did that he knows will put him in hell...

Thank you George W. Bush, there should be a Marvel Comic about you

What is this guy talking about? Do these people read their comments before they post them? Do they think about what they're actually saying?

GW Bush did not lead. He is too busy to line his pocket with the Arab oil countries and did not lead the nation with the proper attention which he should as our president.

Am I missing something? Has GW gotten filthy rich or something over the last 8 years? This comment proves that good grammar is no substitute for insanity.

George Bush-WICKED!

I just watched a movie tonight "Combat Diary, the Marines of Lima Company".
Compelling viewing, but I am skittish at the thought of kicking down doors and clearing houses one at a time. Lots of good guys got dead doing that in Anbar, and other places.

I am all for going in with those bulldozers on the front ends of tanks and just paving the place over.

Ground offensive would take time as well unless they went in with no regard for civilian casualties.

You are assuming my friend, I say as long as the Arabs who live in Gaza(I refuse to call them Palestinians) keep shooting rockets, the air raids should be continued, because you can never be sure that they are not being re-supplied through tunnels and you especially cannot be sure that you have found and destroyed every cache of rockets. Until then I say "Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition Reverend."

The point is not to win, the point is to say to the Arabs of Gaza (nope, still not calling them Palestinians), we will not be murdered while we sleep, and every attempt to murder us will be met with a significant retaliation and you will pay a severe price.

If they launch a ground offensive, what will be the goal? To take and re-occupy the Gaza? Not worth the loss of one Israeli life.

To disuade the Arabs from launching strikes against Israel... well it seems the Airstrikes are providing a persuasive argument, and I am hoping that logic on the Arab mind will eventually force them to accept the fact that any threats, violence or action of their part to harm Israelis will be met with swift and sure retibution.

The israelis are acting prudently. The goal in war is not to die for your country but to minimize the loss of life on your side and make the other SOB die for his country.

If they dont/cant get resupplied, the weapons caches are destroyed and the people who shoot the things at civilians are killed, eventually the rockets will stop. Patience, let the Air Force do its work. No need for unnecessary loss of life on the Israeli side.
