Good news for the Dow.

In other news, I'm writing a paper for one of my classes (International Relations) on Iran and U.S. policy. It is turning out to be very depressing when you get down to the history of Iran and the direction it's currently heading...

Is studying Iranian politics like assembling a vacuum?

OPERATION VALKYRIE

First off I haven’t been paying any attention to the talk surrounding this movie. I’m a history buff not a big Tom Cruise fan. So when I decided to go check out Valkyrie today it was to be entertained. And entertained I was. Me and Fireboat John caught the latest from Cruise (Wyatt couldn’t get away) at a matinée. The theater was crowded so the buzz behind the film must be pretty good.

Cruise is compelling as Colonel Stauffenberg. The movie was riveting even though you know the outcome going in. I was on the edge of my seat a few times. I’m pretty sure the audience liked it. When it was over we were joking around and I made a crack about “everyone in this theater is now under arrest” it was met with laughter, but NERVOUS laughter.

re: #26 NelsFree

It went back and forth. They were very early on, and then not until around 1501 did they regain some hegemony in the region. They were essentially monarchical from 1501 right up to the revolution in 1979. But given the region, they probably had the farthest reach at some crucial points in history.

**yawwwwwwwwwwwwwn**

Good evening, lizards.

*blink*blink*

Just had to take a nap after all the chores I finished today and here I am.

Sharm assembled a vacuum? Good onya toots. I have to do something about my old Kenmore as everytime I use it the beater head falls off and I have to jam it back into the stick. Grrrrrrr.

Makes for frustrating vacuuming I tells ya and using it on three levels I just want to scream when it falls apart.

38 ArmyWife  Fri, Jan 2, 2009 3:47:13pm

re: #24 summergurl

This is phase one of the total kitchen makeover, so I got Kenmore (they were rated the best in consumer reports). I have a professional stove already, however, phase 2 of the project will be a 6 burner professional stove (mine is 4) with both a gas and electric oven along with a subzero fridge.

Have the the Persians always been hegemonic?

That depends on the era. They conquered India from time to time, but were also invaded and conquered by the Mongols, Tamurlane, and the Seljuks. They fought the Ottoman Turks, mostly to a draw. But they still have a national chip on their shoulder over the Arab conquest.

What is going on now is really an effect of the mullah regime's internal ideology.

# A guy who is very fastidious takes his cat to the vet. He is sure the cat is ill, but the symptoms are very vague and uncertain. The vet has seen these cases before. He puts the cat on a table and examimes it from every angle. He lays the cat down and looks it over, again from every angle. Then he takes out a syringe and gives the cat an injection. He tells the man the cat will be fine now, and he can take it home.

At the front desk the clerk says "that will be $315."
"What? That must be SOME medicine!"
"Oh, no," says the clerk, "the medicine was only $15; the $300 was for the cat scan."

One thing led to another with us, granite, appliances, backsplash, lighting, painting, cabinet refinishing, the only thing we didn't replace is the flooring. Got a great Kohler black cast iron sink with a low-divide , and added a pot-filler behind the stove. We had a gas stove because that was a "got to have" when we bought the house - I like to cook and man, a gas stove is the best.

re: #54 LEGION

Good question!

And yes. Iran's strong belief in Twelver Shi'a Islam with Ahmadinejad thinking that he needs to bring about chaos in order to bring the Mahdi back scares me. Essentially, they believe that the Twelfth Imam will return when the world falls into chaos. Ahmadinejad believes that it will happen during his reign. He's built a grand avenue into Tehran to welcome this individual (Who was born in 869 mind you!). And there is a belief in Iran that man can hasten it through an increase in chaos.

Now that's a bit scary.

The thing no one is talking about today: Putin takes first step towards invasion of the Ukraine by setting natural gas trap

In a nutshell, what Putin did to Georgia earlier this year was a test run for what he’s going to do to Ukraine very soon — because he knows Obama will not be able to stop him (as a part of Obama starts thinking of peaches, Jimmy Carter, NeNe, and the Marquette Lounge whenever he gets “Georgia” on his mind). Obama’s vascillation and tepid ultimate response to the Russian invasion of Georgia earlier this year is the greenlight Putin was waiting for. Dear Leader’s kumbaya call for both sides to calm down and talk about the feelings that led to the conflict amounted to basically asking Russia and Georgia to put down the guns and hug it out (”Now, let’s draw a picture of how you want this situation resolved, and let’s use only our happiest crayons”).

Bwahahahahahahahaha.

Sorry. What I meant to say was, of course, tsk tsk and a tut or two also.

Good news for the Dow.

Well, it's remarkable. The McClellan Summation Index says that, as of Monday, the market will be pretty much neutral, with maybe a little upwards momentum. Just, remarkable. But one of these days, people are gonna wake up and see the $3,000,000,000,000 or so that has been dumped into the economy to keep it from "collapse", and that in itself should cause another panic. Though just which way it cuts, is another question, I can make an argument for it hitting the Dow up or down, by thousands of points, partially depending on what happens with interest rates. Crazy times, nor are we out of them.

And that doesn't even include what happens if they start poppin' caps majorly in, oh, the Straits of Hormuz, etc.

Meaning have it powered down and wear a ground clip before swapping. Modern electronics are extremely low voltage, and a static surge can weaken/destroy components-even if you don't feel the surge/shock. A ground clip has a 1 megohm resistor in it, so you bleed the charge off-but hopefully can't get electrocuted.

Are you both using the same protocol, I:E 11.2g, ect. Is your network set to allow only known MAC addresses to connect. Last but not least, are using encryption (WEP/WAP)?

I ask the last because I had a "client" computer using a Linksys Wireless-G (model # WMP54G) connecting to my system through a Linksys (Model # WAP54G) Access Point. When encryption was enabled, the system wouldn't connect even though the password/pass phrase was correct. Once I disabled encryption and went to a MAC address allow/disallow setup, everything worked. Weird.

Breastfeeding a six-year-old

It reminds me of the novel Song of Solomon. The mother breastfed a kid that was tall enough that his feet touched the floor when he was in position across his mother's lap to breast feed. I don't remember his age, but a guy looked in the window and saw him, so he got the nickname of Milkman, and it stayed with him his whole life.

re: #15 Captain Amercia

Read the Rest: FIRST IN

Great review. My cousin and I have both thought about the question you posed. Truth to tell, neither of us could see how we would have done what Stauffenberg did. Given my own knowledge of my personality, had I been lived in Germany at that time, I would have almost certainly been a committed Nazi. I don't say that to offend, but rather to note how I would have reacted given the circumstances and what i would have known at the time.

There but for the grace of God...

Every one that knows me know what I will do next. And it's similar to your suggestion. I will take the last 3-4 thousand in my bank account (that's all I own to my name at any given time) and I will buy a one way ticket to Europe and get lost there for a while.

If I manage to come up with some work, fine. If they catch up with me, it's their nickel, ship me home.

Otherwise, all I need is a few memory sticks, and I got my whole career (writing and/or programming) in my pocket.

I have to vacuum every day, or the perimeters of every room look like they are furry, if I miss a day, it looks like I have not vacuumed in months.

Truer words were never spoken. We have a plutocracy at the top running things and the politicians themselves are running a kleptocracy.

Yup and when Obama gets in, the enlightened ones will run our lives from their ivory towers while we slave away and pay for their houses on the black sea long island. We truly are slipping towards communism.

I hope that you are getting better and would like to know about the service that you are receiving in your part of the world from the VA.

I'm very much of a loner when I need to be. The last 30 years, I've had a lot of domestication, but I can become a "Dean Moriarity" in a moments notice.

well I'd hate to see you flee...we'll need all the voices of reason we can muster...but it's a good plan...if it ever gets close tho grab your money before you need it...jus sayin...and we'll be here when you get back

Get off it, this is not just the democrats. Maybe you missed the tons of money that the current administration has been pissing out of DC like it was water?

Do I think the Democrats are the only problem? No, of course not. Enough "Compassionate Conservatives" in Congress and one in the White House approved of the last bailout to pass it. And I'm sure enough will approve of bailing out the states to get this trillion dollar package through. But from the article you quoted-

The governors of New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Ohio and Wisconsin -- all Democrats -- said the initiative for the two-year aid package was backed by other governors and follows a meeting in December

That to me makes it sound like the Dems are the ones pushing for this idiotic program.

Unfortunately, I think you are spot on. It's a travesty when even our electoral process is compromised. I always found it odd that when Republicans won, there were fraud allegations. When dems win big, everything is kosher. Blows me away but there will come a breaking point and when it comes, the dems will lose power so fast they won't even feel the door hitting them in the ass on the way out.

The day after the November election, Republican Sen. Norm Coleman had won his re-election to the U.S. Senate, beating challenger Al Franken by 725 votes.

Then one heavily Democratic town miraculously discovered 100 missing ballots. And, in another marvel, they were all for Al Franken! It was like a completely evil version of a Christmas miracle.

As strange as it was that all 100 post-election, "discovered" ballots would be for one candidate, it was even stranger that the official time stamp for the miracle ballots printed out by the voting machine on the miracle ballots showed that the votes had been cast on Nov. 2 -- two days before the election.

Democratic election officials in the miracle-ballot county simply announced that their voting machine must have been broken. Don't worry about it -- they were sure those 100 votes for Franken were legit.

Then another 400-odd statistically improbable "corrections" were made in other Democratic strongholds until -- by the end of election week -- Coleman's lead had been whittled down to a mere 215 votes.

Since then, highly irregular counting methods have added to Franken's total bit by bit, to the point that Coleman is now ahead by only 188 votes.
...
Consider a few other chilling examples of Democrats thieving their way to victory over the years.

In 1974, Republican Louis Wyman won his race for U.S. Senate in New Hampshire, beating Democrat John Durkin by 355 votes. Durkin demanded a recount -- which went back and forth by a handful of votes until the state's Ballot Law Commission concluded that Wyman had indeed won by (at least) two votes.

Wyman was certified the winner by the New Hampshire secretary of state and was on his way to Washington when ... the overwhelmingly Democratic U.S. Senate refused to seat Wyman.

Despite New Hampshire's certification of Wyman as the winner of the election, this was the post-Watergate Senate, when Democrats could get away with anything -- up to and including a prank known as "President Jimmy Carter."

The U.S. Senate spent months examining disputed ballots from the New Hampshire election. Unable to come up with a method to declare the Democrat the winner that didn't require a guillotine, the Senate forced New Hampshire to hold another election.

It was a breathtaking abuse of power. New Hampshire had certified a winner of its Senate election, but it was a Republican, so the Democratic Senate simply ordered a new election.

Demoralized Republicans stayed away from the race and, this time, the Democrat won the re-vote.

Even more egregious was the Indiana House race in 1984. On election night, the incumbent Democrat Frank McCloskey appeared to have won a narrow victory of 72 votes. But after a correction was made in one county, it turned out his Republican opponent, Richard McIntyre, had won by 34 votes.

McIntyre was certified the winner -- which is when the trouble usually starts for a Republican.

Again, a majority Democrat House refused to seat the certified winner in a close election. I'm sure it was just a coincidence that the winner was a Republican.

Consequently, Indiana performed yet another recount of the entire district, which again showed that Republican McIntyre was the winner -- this time by 418 votes. Now he was really asking for it. The nerve of this guy! Hey, buddy, do you mind? We're trying to throw an election over here!

As The Washington Post reported at the time: There were "no allegations of fraud" in the recount and 90 percent of ballot disqualifications had been agreed to "by election commissions dominated by Democrats."

So naturally the House refused to seat the Republican even though he had received the most votes (hereinafter referred to as "the winner"). The House proceeded to conduct its own recount. (If you haven't detected a pattern by this point, please ask your doctor if Prilosec is right for you.)

I'm reminded of an Islamic Hadith about breastfeeding adult males for a certain reason. Can't recall it all.

I'm afraid that breaking point won't come unless we see a fundamental change in the media. They have the power to sway and change opinion and if they were true watchdogs the democrats wouldn't get away with this shit. As it stands they are a wholly owned subsidiary of the Democratic Party. And for that they need to be brought down with a wrecking ball.

Relations between Hamas and Egypt were already not flourishing, but now,.. read this - wherein a Hamas representative is speaking out against his own Hamas propaganda in order to hurt Egypt:

Osama Hamdan, Hamas' representative in Lebanon, responded heatedly. "This is very surprising," he said. "We expected sister Egypt to act responsibly towards the occurrences in Palestine, and especially Gaza."

He added, "It's surprising because international law states that the crossings must be open during war and we are at war. Thus all the talk about us being occupied is irrelevant."

Hamdan said Israel had no connection to the crossing whatsoever, as an agreement it had signed with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had expired three years ago. "After that it was to become a Palestinian-Egyptian crossing," he said.

Look at my 295. If there's anything worth a revolution it's the outright stealing of elections..........

The wascally wepublican GMcChimpyBushitler won the electoral vote in 2004.
I was opposed to (and remain opposed) to changing the rules to "popular vote".
Then the Democrats identified several Republican ethical scandals, (correctly) and began making significant gains on "reform".
Now, the Democrats are being exposed as being at least as corrupt, and it's becoming apparent to the nation that it's been like that for a long time.

From my perspective, it's third party time, but not civil war time.
Replacing the power base from one existing party to the other doesn't seem to have worked, but I don't see "war" as a logical solution, either.

I just got into Philly to help close the shipyard and stayed about 3-4 months.
I was staying at the round travel lodge in South Philly..you know the one Wyatt. So anyhow i get to my room and take off for the day to shop and sight see .. I had left 3 grand in my suitcase and my room got robbed.
So about 3 weeks later..(oh the gov't cut me a check..they bailed me out)
My buddies had told me they wanted to go out after work but i said no.
So i'm laying in bed naked under a sheet when somebody starts banging on the door.. I'm thinking I told you guys i was going to bed..So i ignored the repeated knocks.. then I hear a key and running in the room was this great big dude and we both just freak out screaming shit..He runs out the room And I start chasing him yelling stop that man.. All i had was a sheet around me and he goes down the stairwell and I was like 10 floors up and i start chasing him yelling how i was going to kick his ass and he's running downstairs as fast as he can yelling you ain't catching me mofo..He runs out the 1st floor..through the lobby and i'm naked in a sheet screaming stop that man!
I ended up in the street with people staring at me..thinking i was insane..

Travesty? TRAVESTY, Jetpilot?

Travesty doesn't begin to describe the corruption and gaming of the governmental system in America!

Obama (through his team) gamed the first caucuses, then cheated in Texas, then lied and spun his way to the top, as if being in the White House were some sort of Reality Show that could be acquired by any means!

The depth and extent of the DYSFUNCTION is illustrated, in stark black-and-white, in the Franken Debacle ("Hey, I found some MORE absentee ballots!")

Until Americans find the courage to hammer out a NEW SYSTEM, we deserve the corruption we have...

Unfortunately instead of a beautiful asian woman you get a sweaty scotsman in medieval armour, but apart from that it's the same idea.

Not about to get wrapped up in music puns. Too much time away from the Mrs. could get me in a lot of treble. Gotta run!

It also will keep you from making a lot of falsetto statements.

They can try to meld their fantasy to my reality, but in the end, the fantasy will give in to reality....it always does. (I hope I'm right)

Now that is a statement I can agree with.

Shoot. I thought = might be a new feature if you were indifferent about the comment!

Travesty? TRAVESTY, Jetpilot?
Until Americans find the courage to hammer out a NEW SYSTEM, we deserve the corruption we have...

I updinged you. We don't need a new system, we need an informed electorate willing to speak out and declare, in no uncertain terms, that the principles of the Founding Fathers need to be reinculcated.

Wasn't if Winston Churchill who said,"Democracy is a bad system of government, the only thing worse is all the other methods?"

Help me out, here.

Everything check out okay Empire1?

Just fine, and thanks for asking! The cancer hasn't shown any signs of coming back, and I seem to be recovered from the stroke as much as I'm going to, so the only real current problem is my bleepin' blood pressure. I was in mostly to get prescription refills, and have a chance to meet him.

Goody.
Open thread, so I can post this from JammieWearingFool, which is funny as hell, esp. given HH's story just now of being robbed:

As Soon As He Saw Me, His Eyes Went Wide With Terror'

Hilarious! A cast off from DKos !

re: #398 ArmyWife

I have a few rules. One is don't sleep naked. My husband says "why are you like this?" I say "Because I do NOT want to be talking to any firemen whilst I am wearing NO CLOTHES!". Now I have this story to use as ammunition, too.

At new years party (seniors) - one shared how she slipped out of the shower - just could push the phone off it's perch and she called 911 - only a towel ... The firemen arrived and calmly said to her "don't worry - we've seen everything" - picked her up - loaded her on the gurney, covered her up and away they went.

That's what I'm worried about. The dems are stealing our freedoms and playing fast and loose with the law.

The MSM is the group playing fast and loose.
They just happen to favor the dems -- which is why the dems are getting away with stealing stuff.
And the MSM is on the crisp edge
