You punch in at 8:30 every morning, except you punch in at 7:30 following a business holiday, unless it’s a Monday, then you punch in at 8 o’clock. Punch in late and they dock you. Incoming articles get a voucher, outgoing articles provide a voucher. Move any article without a voucher and they dock you. Letter size a green voucher, oversize a yellow voucher, parcel size a maroon voucher. Wrong color voucher and they dock you! 6787049A/6. That is your employee number. It will not be repeated! Without your employee number you cannot get your paycheck. Inter-office mail is code 37, intra-office mail 37-3, outside mail is 3-37. Code it wrong and they dock you! This has been your orientation. Is there anything you do not understand, is there anything you understand only partially? If you have not been fully oriented, you must file a complaint with personnel. File a faulty complaint and they dock you!

Anybody celebrate New Year's Eve this way? Gee, we miss all the fun.

France's New Year's Tradition: Car-Burning

According to figures from the French Interior Ministry, 1,147 cars went up in smoke on New Year's Eve - a 30% rise on the 879 autos torched the same night in 2007. As often is the case, the worst-hit areas were the disadvantaged neighborhoods that sit beyond the suburban peripheries of most French cities.

Asshats burn cars when they are already disadvantaged (as they claim repeatedly).

I am beginning to see a reason for the high number of burned cars in France. It is an insurance fraud where the owners could get a new car.

[New Years eve Car-B-Q]

There is an impression of "calm", since there was no major incident to report. But this is counterbalanced by a negative find: 1147 burnt-out cars, or 30% more than last year, even though the police were out in force (35,000 men deployed). Two hundred eighty persons were arrested...

Europe 1 suggests that some of the cars were burned by their owners:
Gérard Gachet cites possible "insurance fraud" to explain the higher figures on New Year's Eve. "When cars burn in places where everything is calm," one may wonder if "certain persons" did not want to take advantage of the "new indemnity regulations" that are part of the law on compensating victims." He added that "the experts would be able to say upon examining the cars
." (...)

I am working in my garage, where I have almost no power tools, nothing more than some drills and an orbital sander. If I had a table saw that would be perfect, one that does mitered cuts.

New Senator to be Michael Bennet of CO. (He's Denver's public schools superintendent.) Notice there is no mention of experience or actual qualifications for the Senate job. But who cares about that?

"This is a critical time in history. The economic challenges facing America and Colorado are unprecedented," Ritter said in a written statement. "Our challenges are so serious that it will take a new generation of leaders, a new way of thinking and a bold new approach to problem-solving to steer us through this."

Obama said in a statement that Bennet would be "a breath of fresh air in Washington."

"Michael Bennet perfectly reflects the qualities of the ruggedly independent state he has been chosen to serve," Obama said.

The Bush administration on Saturday blamed the more than week-old onslaught in Gaza squarely on Hamas militants.

A State Department official said the U.S. is working toward a cease-fire but provided no details on how this can be accomplished because the U.S. does not talk to Hamas. Spokesman Sean McCormack said a cease-fire is needed that will not allow Hamas to continue firing rockets into Israel. McCormack said "it's obvious the cease-fire should take place as soon as possible," but it has to be sustainable and cannot allow Hamas to continue to launch rockets out of Gaza.

I was trying to determine the possible cause for the high number of burned cars in France - and the relative lack of out rage. That article was just picked at random. Insurance fraud sounds likely.

In the USA if you are caught in insurance fraud it is serious matter. But, that may not be the case in France where practically everything is socialized.

Are you sure you want to source Brussels Journal? They have premium ads from Fiordman. I'm not sure they're really on our side.

People refer to Huffpo, Kos and DU in here frequently. The source is not endorsed but the possible story needs to be noted and further investigated. The motives of the referrer may be suspect but that is the problem with crime. People you like don't know about it.

Israel moves into Gaza and then soon into Lebanon, while Iran counters with Hamas and then Hezbollah, and possibly Syria as its pawns and knights and bishops.

Hamas is dead proxy army walking. If Hexbollah pulls anything, the counterstrike is in Damascus.

Iran doesn't want any part of an actual war. All they know is terrorism. When the Mullahs are the ones getting terrorized, they got nothing,

Fairway Oaks was built on northern Florida wasteland by 10,000 volunteers, including Carter, in a record 17-day “blitz” organised by the charity Habitat for Humanity.

Eight years later it is better known for cockroaches, mildew and mysterious skin rashes.

A forthcoming legal battle over Fairway Oaks threatens the reputation of a charity envied for the calibre of its celebrity supporters, who range from Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt to Colin Firth, Christian Bale and Helena Bonham Carter.

Kinda takes it out of the cold pages of a history book when you see it in the flesh.

Oh yes it does. Most recent former wife had an uncle and an aunt who were in one of the death camps but survived. When I met them it was summer-short sleeve weather and I just impulsively hugged 'em.
Two years or so later we went to the National Holocaust Museum in D.C. and they had a place on the top floor where you could sit in a sound proof cubbie and listen to tapes of survivors telling their personal stories and I HEARD - in great detail - all of the awful things they'd gone through, seen and done cause both of my former wife's Uncle and Aunt had made separate recordings.
We left the museum in silence and I don't think we said ANYTHING for over an hour or two.

Seriously, that should be the worst thing you ever do...and it was funny! Not a lot of laughs today. The war in Gaza is getting to me. One tiny Israel, the Jewish homeland, and the number of anti-Israel demonstrations world-wide? They just do not get it.

Give it another 10 years or so and there will be almost no one to bare witness. The deniers are already unchained. Here in NY we have two Jewish Museums, the main one uptown and a new one in Battery Park that is a Living Memorial to the Holocaust but today the streets were owned by over 3,000 screaming Palestinian anti-Semites.

Well wife and I were "Charter Members" (means we gave a sizeable amount of dough to get the museum started) and so we got newsletters from the museum and when they mentioned that they had added that feature - an "oral history of the Holocaust from Survivors" we were down there the next weekend to hear it.
Hearing those who went through that is truly invaluable historically - and to my then wife and myself, personally.
But man, I was listening to the stories of two people I knew and had visited and broken bread with on several occasions. The Aunt once told my wife (I found out after the Aunt passed away) that I would have been a "Righteous Gentile" had I lived in those times and in those places.
Really broke me and the wife up when she told me that.

He confirmed that many Fatah operatives had been shot in the legs over the past few days by Hamas "to make sure that they don't help Israel."

To bring this full circle. Each individual chooses good or evil for themselves. We can witness and we can learn or reject what we see, for good or evil. The Palestinians have lived next to the people of Israel, they have observed and they have chosen. Who are we to deny that act? To me this makes their crimes all the more serious, they are not in some isolated jungle where they could not hear about the wider world. Their ignorance and bigotry is the result of hard work.

I haven't been to any Holocaust Museums except for the ones in Washington D.C. and NYC but the effect was the same (though the D.C. was the one with the most exhibits - including the aformentioned oral history tapes AND one of the "cattle cars" that was actually used. Most folks went on a pathway around it, but I just HAD to walk through it and I don't know how to say this very well, but while I was in that cattle car and looking around, surprised at how small it was, I got the most incredible feeling of COLDNESS. I disagree, in fact I emphatically disagree. That is importing a legal insanity plea into this discussion where it does not belong. We choose our moral compass and we act. They choose to deny the humanity of others and then justify violence, we must act according to standards, the best we can and we either judge them by the most sensitive and just standards we have, that we demonstrate to them or we declare them incapable of observing and learning. If you believe that then you are saying they can not be conversed with only destroyed. The choice in how they act is theirs ad so are the consequences. It is called Free Will and I do not deny it.

You jump to one invalid conclusion here, that they cannot change, or even that they must change, to come to a consensus with us. My point is that they must change behavior, which perhaps you agree with, perhaps you intend, when you refer to their "crimes". I have no position on whether change is easy, hard, or impossible. I am thinking of picking one up. I hear they are good for precise cuts.

I have a dozuki, very similar to the first illustration in the Wiki article. It is very precise, and almost effortless to use. Being as it's a backsaw (rib along the back of the blade), there's a limit on the thickness of stock you can cut with it. But, up to the limit, it's very useful, indeed.

re: #243 Floral Giraffe Oh absolutely. In the first big package we received for becoming charter members, the foundation which was in the process of building the building and assembling the exhibits, was an excerpt from Dwight David Eisenhower's diary. It said - rough reproduction from memory here "I asked Georgie (George Patton) to accompany me to look inside the ovens. George said he could not do so - he had done so when his troops liberated the camp and had to hide his throwing up because he didn't think it right for troops to see their leader throwing up over that. I responded: George, if men like you and I don't go and look, bear witness to this unspeakable barbarity, then in time people will deny it ever happened. We MUST NOT LET THAT HAPPEN." Ike was a very good man for doing that and writing and later on speaking about it, but even he couldn't foresee that some people - a lot of people - would forget it ever happened, much less deny that it did.

But you don't expect a bad man to go 'rasslin' pans and pots.
He'd done his share of killin', but his draw was gettin' slow
So he quits apunchin' cattle and he takes to punchin' dough.

Our foreman up an hires him thinkin' age had rode him tame
But a snake don't get no sweeter by the changin' of his name.
Boomer knew his business, he could cook to make you smile

Six million is too much to comprehend completely, it sometimes becomes a statistic. One person in front of you is inescapable reality.

One way to scale it: If every single comment ever made on LGF was the sole expression of one unique individual, and then, in the amount of time now passed since DanRat's Memo, every last one of those commenters - that is, 68,000 realwests, 6800 LeePros, 4400 stevierays, 1400 Clementes, and over 6 million more - were rounded up and systematically imprisoned and murdered, you'd have the scope, scale and approximate time line of the slaughter of European Jewry. An abomination only surpassed by the expressed intent of Koranic Islam.

I'm experiencing a new kind of jihad which, to coin a term, I'll call "troll jihad."

In troll jihad, the servants of Allah go around on the Internet, and whenever they encounter a post that is critical of them (or so they perceive), they pretend to be intolerant American warmongers and leave comments like "Kill all the M_ _ _ _ _ ms," and "We should just wipe them all out," etc. Then they'll come back on with a different commenting name and point out how the other commenters are genocidal racists.

They don't seem to know that we admins can see the IPs of commenters, so I know that the jihadists are leaving those cartoonishly stupid pseudo-genocidal comments themselves, in order to discredit the site in question.

Just in the last couple hours, I've had to delete five such comments at zomblog, inspired by my latest thread.

Troll jihad may not be as bad as Maximum Jihad, but damn it sure can be annoying!

I read that when I was seventeen. Had decided to do a high school term paper on the atrocities of Hitler & Co. There have been times, now that I am old, that I've thought I should read that and the other books I read just to see if I was too young and overly sensitive and I can't go there. Once was more than enough.

347 mean Gene  Sun, Jan 4, 2009 12:32:20am

This whole ''troll jihad'' thing reminded me of the plot (which was published on a few lefty blogs) to go to patriotic sites with discussion boards (as the US and allies went into Afghanistan and later Iraq) pretending to be the relative of a US soldier and ''oh, so proud.''
Then, over time to become disillusioned and even to claim he/she was injured or killed.
Then to try to turn as many as possible against the war.
Anyone else remember those types of posts (here or other places)?
We had plenty of them on Ted Nugent's ''Nuge Board'' (before he started charging to join).

I am reaching the third read on Don Quixote, I think. (Of course sixty is the new forty so maybe I'll read it four times). I really think, looking back, that I should have done that paper in college rather than high school. I read all of those books, even Mein Kamphf (not looking at the spell check this late, LOL) I was totally freaked out but, then again, would be having nightmares even now.

re: #296 Clemente

Finally found the link... this page lists in detail the many, many numbers related to the crimes committed by and on behalf of those tried at Nuremberg. It goes beyond a simple "grand total" and lists some of the individual acts that lead to the total... I think all but the most damaged individuals (or maybe illiterate) could manage to read this and not get choked up.

The hardest part for me is when I hit the point that I know I'm going to have trouble sleeping for the next few weeks and then realize I'm not even near the halfway point. It isn't light reading at all, but I recommend passing it around to anybody who ever seems to have trouble grasping why the Nazis, fascism, and extremist views in general are so reviled by many "sane" people.

Unfortunately, I reread it before posting this and haven't got the energy to stay up any longer. Good night, lizards.

Don't know if anyone answered you yet. I have and like it... Cuts pretty well. Quicker than an American saw. More precise. Not so sure about that.
From my experience, an American saw cuts one way, the Japanese one cuts both ways- hence the quickness factor.

Is anyone else tuned into CNN's live international coverage right now? It's outrageous! The preseneter's questioning of her Israeli guest was condescending, and then without comment she let the Palestinian rep claim that Israel killed Arafat. This, while he droned on and on with his empty rhetoric for at least twice the time allotted the Israeli. She just re-capped for everyone's benefit "how we got here," and her timeline starts (wait for it...) with the Israeli air strikes one week ago. Truly, truly disgusting.

re: #399 littleoldlady

Super good:
1 can refried beans
1/2cup sour cream
4oz pkg of cream cheese - softened
1/2 package taco seasoning mix
4 scallions sliced
4 oz cheddar cheeze
4 oz Monterey Jack cheese.
preheat oven to 350
1 - blend sour cream with cream cheese
2 - Mix in the beans, taco mix, scallions and half of the two cheeses. Put in a small cassarole dish, sprinkle with the remaining cheese.
3 - Bake about 20 min until it's bubbly and lightly browned.
Most stores now have mixed cheddar/Monteray Jack shredded packages so you don't even have to guess.
Works great with "restaurtant" tortilla chips.

Here's mine:

Spread two 8 oz packages of cream cheese on the bottom of a pan.

Brown a lb of ground beef, pour off the fat, add a packet of taco seasoning (and water, according to package directions) and cook for a few minutes.

Add a chopped green pepper, chopped jalepeno pepper and a can of chopped tomatoes to the taco beef. Cook for a few more minutes.

Spread the beef mixture over the cream cheese in the pan. Add a layer of chopped or sliced black olives, and a layer of shredded taco cheese blend.

Bake @ 350 for 15-20 minutes.

Hamas moves on Fatah 'collaborators'

Fatah officials in Ramallah told The Jerusalem Post that Hamas militiamen had been assaulting many Fatah activists since the beginning of the operation last Saturday. They said at least 75 activists were shot in the legs while others had their hands broken.

Wisam Abu Jalhoum, a Fatah activist from the Jabalya refugee camp, was shot in the legs by Hamas militiamen for allegedly expressing joy over the IDF air strikes on Hamas targets.

"Hamas is very nervous, because they feel that their end is nearing," a senior Fatah official said. "They have been waging a brutal campaign against Fatah members in the Gaza Strip."
