Richardson Throws Himself Under the Bus

Politics • Views: 3,057

Bill Richardson is bailing out of the Obama administration: Richardson to withdraw as Commerce secretary.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, tapped in December by President-elect Barack Obama to serve as secretary of Commerce, has withdrawn his name for the position, citing a pending investigation into a company that has done business with his state.

“Let me say unequivocally that I and my Administration have acted properly in all matters and that this investigation will bear out that fact,” he said Sunday in a report by NBC News’ Andrea Mitchell. “But I have concluded that the ongoing investigation also would have forced an untenable delay in the confirmation process.”

Will repost if I get a sensible answer.

Reid cites "legal authority" to bar Illinois pick

Under the Constitution, Reid said, "We determine who sits in the Senate. And the House (of Representatives) determines who sits in the House. So there's clearly legal authority for us to do whatever we want to do. This goes back for generations."

If that is allowed to stand, voting becomes immaterial, and makes what's going on in Minnesota look like child's play.

I guess that is possible, but Richardson threw the Clintons under the bus as a bid to get into Obama's cabinet. It is passing strange that he would wave off the political payoff that he no doubt feels he is due.

I wonder what he found out. Whatever it is, I doubt that he'll be writing a tell-all book explaining it to the voters.

Meaning whatever it was was pretty big to dump the job he bullied his way into.

I'd expect no tell-all... he wants to still be around when the shit hits the fan and keep his options open to run for president again.

No two women will wear the same dress.

NEW YORK (AFP) – A new website hopes to save guests at president-elect Barack Obama's inauguration balls from the ultimate fashion faux pas -- wearing the same dress as someone else.

Dressregistry.com invites party goers to post the designer, color and length of their outfit chosen for the dozens of January 20 inauguration bashes in Washington, DC.

"Our one goal is to lessen the chance that someone attending the same event as you will be wearing the EXACT same dress," organizers write on the website.

For example, anyone headed to the Commander-in-Chief Ball knows that someone else has got first dibs on a pink, ankle-length Adrianna Pappell dress with a plunging neckline.

Sorry for the re-post but Charles is putting up threads so fast I can't keep up (from the prior thread):

BTW, didja notice on Drudge that I finally got my answer as to what legal grounds the Dem's could refuse to seat Burris?

Under the Constitution, Reid said, "We determine who sits in the Senate. And the House (of Representatives) determines who sits in the House. So there's clearly legal authority for us to do whatever we want to do. This goes back for generations."
Well, that's certainly clear enough for me! Hey, why the hell bother having elections? Blago was elected. Blago hasn't been indicted, arrested or impeached. Like it or not (and personally I'm LOVING IT!) Blago is the legal Governor of Illinois and has all requisite authority to appoint Burris to Obama's Senate Seat. The only reason the Dem's don't want to seat Burris is because they are RACISTS!
Spread the news!

re: #111 realwest

Senate Seat Dispute May Head to Court

The extent of that power has been tested before the Supreme Court only once, after the House decided not to seat embattled Democrat Rep. Adam Clayton Powell Jr., in 1967 despite his re-election to the seat. The high court ruled that the chamber could not block Mr. Powell, because he was duly elected and met all of the other constitutional requirements for office.

Mr. Burris would be appointed, however, which could change the equation, Mr. Ritchie said. Senate lawyers are now closely studying the decision in Mr. Powell's case, which was decided by the Supreme Court in 1969.

Paul Sracic, chair of the political science department at Youngstown State University and a professor of constitutional law, said the Supreme Court case "is pretty clear that when judging the qualifications of members, each house is limited to age, citizenship and residency qualifications."

/Reid has no legal standing to deny Burris his Seat

re: #103 freedomplow

Has the U.S ever had a President elect with this much corruption going on all around him?

Historians?

I would say to one degree or another...MOST of them....from both parties. Some seem to excel at it more than others though. In the past 100 years you can look at Harding and the Teapot Dome scandal, FDR was a virtual dictator, Kennedy was dirty as hell, so was Nixon, Clinton is the current champion, but that may change in a few weeks.

Let's face it, most of these guys have to "play ball" to advance inside of a party. It is the nature of our current system. It is stable, but reeks of corruption and self-advancing. The first thing these guys do when they get elected is to see how they can keep themselves in power. Then, they start looking at how this new job can benefit them. How many times do you hear about a governor or congressmen or President that left office poorer than they started? How can that be? The pay is ok, but they all seem to leave as millionaires or multi-millionaires if they were already rich.

There are some that still serve with honor. But, look closely at our elected officials. Most of them are there to feather their own nest. Cynical? Yes, very much so. Accurate? Unfortunately, yes.

re: #126 Shug

How can the senate vote to expel a lawful appointee, yet allow Ted Stevens to finish his term?

Because the Constitution says so. Emphases added.
Art I sec 3.2: ... and if Vacancies happen by Resignation, or otherwise, during the Recess of the Legislature of any State, the Executive thereof may make temporary Appointments until the next Meeting of the Legislature, which shall then fill such Vacancies.

Art I sec 5 sec 5: Each House shall be the judge of the elections, returns and qualifications of its own members, and a majority of each shall constitute a quorum to do business; but a smaller number may adjourn from day to day, and may be authorized to compel the attendance of absent members, in such manner, and under such penalties as each House may provide.
Each House may determine the rules of its proceedings, punish its members for disorderly behavior, and, with the concurrence of two thirds, expel a member.
Each House shall keep a journal of its proceedings, and from time to time publish the same, excepting such parts as may in their judgment require secrecy; and the yeas and nays of the members of either House on any question shall, at the desire of one fifth of those present, be entered on the journal.
Neither House, during the session of Congress, shall, without the consent of the other, adjourn for more than three days, nor to any other place than that in which the two Houses shall be sitting.

Amendment XVII
The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, elected by the people thereof, for six years; and each Senator shall have one vote. The electors in each State shall have the qualifications requisite for electors of the most numerous branch of the State legislatures.
When vacancies happen in the representation of any State in the Senate, the executive authority of each State shall issue writs of election to fill such vacancies: Provided, That the legislature of any State may empower the executive thereof to make temporary appointments until the people fill the vacancies by election as the legislature may direct.
This amendment shall not be so construed as to affect the election or term of any Senator chosen before it becomes valid as part of the Constitution.

Legally Blago has a case, the text says he "shall" issue a writ of election. Reid also has a case since he has the power to expel with 67 votes but the chamber can judge the qualification of a member and the validity of the election with a simple majority.

The turn of events after this officer distress call has become perhaps the most legendary story in NYPD history. Police entered the Mosque and a conflict occurred, leaving Office Cardillo dead, and the city on the brink of a full-scale riot. Sensing a potential crisis and conflict with the Nation of Islam and the Black Liberation Army, New York City Mayor John Lindsey, Commissioner Benjamin Ward, and Congressman Charles Rangel acquiesced to the city’s black leaders and ordered the police out of the Mosque.

All presidential administrations have corruption, it is part of the nature of all human institutions but the problems President-Elect Obama is having prior to taking the oath of office is pretty unprecedented. The Blago mess, (usually such things have been pretty much worked out within the party prior to the election-not as an afterthought-see VP-elect Biden's seat), now Richardson (a federal investigation is tough to miss, nanny-gate/smoked a joint type stuff can sneak up on the vetting process, but a federal investigation...), the leaking of the Obama-Bush meetings (just bad form and it will not be forgotten by professionals). This is basic politics 101 stuff, not crisis control with a zillion variables. It does make one wonder if the Obama team is ready for the big time.

Reid cites "legal authority" to bar Illinois pick

If that is allowed to stand, voting becomes immaterial, and makes what's going on in Minnesota look like child's play.

I think Reid might be hosed on this.

Article 1 of the Constitution (annotated) (PDF file) shows there is a lot of case law against him, primarily being that of the case of Adam Clayton Powell. Scroll down to page 114.

Exclusivity of Constitutional Qualifications
Congressional Additions.—Writing in The Federalist with
reference to the election of Members of Congress, Hamilton firmly
stated that ‘‘[t]he qualifications of the persons who may . . . be chosen
. . . are defined and fixed in the constitution; and are unalterable
by the legislature.’’ Until the Civil War, the issue was not
raised, the only actions taken by either House conforming to the
idea that the qualifications for membership could not be enlarged
by statute or practice. 317 But in the passions aroused by the fratricidal
conflict, Congress enacted a law requiring its members to
take an oath that they had never been disloyal to the National
Government. 318 Several persons were refused seats by both Houses
because of charges of disloyalty, 319 and thereafter House practice,
and Senate practice as well, was erratic. 320 But in Powell v.
McCormack, 321 it was conclusively established that the qualifications
listed in cl. 2 are exclusive 322 and that Congress could not
add to them by excluding Members-elect not meeting the additional
qualifications. 323

Relevant footnotes:

321 395 U.S. 486 (1969). The Court divided eight to one, Justice Stewart dissenting on the ground the case was moot. Powell’s continuing validity was affirmed in U.S. Term Limits, Inc. v. Thornton, 514 U.S. 779 (1995), both by the Court in its holding that the qualifications set out in the Constitution are exclusive and may not be added to by either Congress or the States, id. at 787–98, and by the dissent, who would hold that Congress, for different reasons could not add to qualifications, although the States could. Id. at 875–76.
322 The Court declined to reach the question whether the Constitution in fact does impose other qualifications. 395 U.S. at 520 n. 41 (possibly Article I, § 3, cl. 7, disqualifying persons impeached, Article I, § 6, cl. 2, incompatible offices, and § 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment). It is also possible that the oath provision of Article VI, cl. 3, could be considered a qualification. See Bond v. Floyd, 385 U.S. 116, 129–131 (1966).

Nope, I don't think he even has all the Dems on board, much less enough RINO's to help out. To repeat: Blago is still the lawful govenor of Illinois. He has the right to appoint someone to take over Obama's senate seat. Blago has not been indicted, arrested, nor impeached.
Tough luck all the way around for Obama and the Dems.

He has been arrested, just not indicted. A mere arrest means little, it is the opinion of a law enforcement officer that a crime may have taken place.

I think Reid might be hosed on this.

Technically, of course, you are absolutely correct.

Isn't it fascinating that Grant concluded his monumental autobiography with the end of the Civil War?

the corruption within the Grant admin let to the failure of the banking system which killed the western railroads badly needed for expantion...to drum up cash the railroads and Feds simply ignored most treaties in place with the Sioux and Cheyene...gave that land away to the railroads which was sold....ending any decent rez system for the Indians which ultimately led to their near total destruction....bankers wiped out the American Plains Tribes....

Many people would disagree with that in the case of Teddy Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhour.
I kept my silence when many people also wanted David Petraeus in some political office.

Field commanders who have a good sense of social reality usually do well.

You make good points, but re Grant, I was speaking of his peculiar single-minded focus. He was like a pit bull. He didn't let go.

I absolute hate it when Leftists try this bullshit. The three/fifths compromise was intended to be a check on Slave States' power. The slaveholders were all for the slaves counting for determining how many Congressmen they had. The Free States wanted to keep the slaves from being counted because counting them for purposes of apportionment of the House would have meant many more Congressmen from the Slave States.

It wasn't some nefarious scheme that the Founders should be criticized for. Unless, of course, you side with the Slave States.

So are you saying the framers thought that slaves were equal to whites under the constitution when they wrote it, or that that document was without flaw as written ?

So, Syria is calling on Russia to stop Israel's defensive operations in Gaza.

That's rich. I don't recall that the long necked dictator's dad, Hafez Assad had any interest in the human rights of 25,000 people in Hama.

The Muslim Brotherhood, progenitors to al Qaeda, Hamas and other Islamists around the world, threated Assad. Assad's response was simple.

Obliterate the home of the Brotherhood in Syria, Hama.

He called in his army, which pulverized the entire city. They basically plowed the entire city under. No one demanded ceasefires. No one demanded human rights be respected.

Israel, of course, believes in human rights, and puts its own soldiers and civilians into dangerous situations to avoid hitting Gazan civilians. It extends the conflict, and more Palestinians and Israelis are injured as a result. But no one cares, because it's Israel involved and the double standard is standard operating procedures for the nations of the world and the media that has its memes and sticks to them.

re: #295 Iron Fist

I agree that they'll never do it. And it is the only chance of attaining real peace that they have. As long as they let Hamas hide among the people to plot and even execute their terrorism, Israel is going to be fighting a losing battle.

And now the One is going to take over American policy. If Israel doesn't get it done by the Twentieth, it probably aint gonna happen for at least four years.

There is a feeling of something different now. . .I am hoping it is for the good of Israel, that they have read the writing on the wall that was not spun. . .they know dear leader will abandon them quicker than Wright. . .

Starting around 1873, the list of scandals and outright crimes becomes long and continuous.

The Credit Mobilier scandal was the biggest in the 19th Century, and involved several congressmen and elected officials. They were financing the building of the Union Pacific RR, mostly by paying themselves to build it, and most of the stockholders literally made out like bandits (CM was paying 300% dividends while the UP was scrambling for money to pay its workers).

You've not studied history very much, have you? Nor politics, except the routine nonsense spouted by the Left. The founders got the best compromise that they could have gotten at the time. The Slave States had less influence over national policy than they otherwise would have had. Among other things, this led to the outlawing of bringing slaves from Africa to the States.

What you are saying is that if they didn't get the Constitution perfect, then we have to throw it out, and write a new "perfect" one. That will only happen after another Civil War. And I wouldn't count on you or people who think like you winning it.

the US Constitution is the most brilliant compromising and workable govt document ever written...it is pure genius imo....

Actually, the transcontinental railroad did that. The Sioux and Cheyenne were against the railroad because buffalo wouldn't cross the tracks. They ambushed and killed several work parties. The railroad responded by arming all of its workers (most were ACW veterans in any case), and the army stationed troops along the route and accompanied the survey teams.

The Pawnees were probably the happiest; they were mortal enemies of the Sioux and Cheyenne, and the army was willing to pay them to hunt down their enemies. Win-win situation for them.

I didn't say he was alcoholic (by most accounts, he was).
I said he liked good whiskey.

Yes, you're right. I over-reacted. *salute*

Re: "by most accounts, he was"

Was he an alcoholic at some point in his life? Yes. Earlier. While posted in California, IIRC.

Was he an alcoholic (or did he even drink immoderately) after assuming command on the Mississippi. No.

re: #306 pre-Boomer Marine brat

Just on that one point -- refer to Bruce Catton's books re Grant's alleged alcoholism DURING the war itself. Catton saw no indication of it. If you want a citation/s, I can dig one/them up. The books are on the shelf here.

/I have heard rumors that Catton was an authority on the Civil War ... :D

From what I read, the entire foundation of the Grant-is-a-lush stories is the documented drinking he did in California. He was depressed because he was half a continent (at the time, half a world) away from his family. His commander let him resign for the good of the service. When the war started, he raised a regiment in Illinois and got a colonel's commission from the governor.

By all accounts, his chief of staff, Gen. Rawlins, was something of a nag and very watchful about anything that might be detrimental to Grant's career.

It did have flaws, that's why it's been amended, the framers never considered slaves as citizens for example. The interview you mentioned discussed here:

I've yet to meet a leftist who didn't treat the constitution like a cafeteria line... picking the parts they like and ignoring the others.

Join our struggle and support Socialism and Jihad!

Heil Obama! Heil Hamas, Hiebollah, and Iran! Heil the Aryan race!

Join our protestors in the streets to help the children of Palestine!

We are the new majority in the USA and soon your families will all be slaughtered like dogs! George Bush can't save you now

At first glance I thought this might be from a neo-nazi, but neo-nazis don't wave the flag for socialism - for them socialism is a word to describe contemptible decadent filth. Some right wingers however, do make a big point about the Nazis being called 'National Socialists' as if that meant that they really were left wingers. It's certainly not a point that neo-nazis would ever make, which leads to the conclusion that this is clearly the work of a right wing moby. Which is a tad unneccessary because there are plenty of genuine nutcases out there - there's really no need to fake them.

We have an entire generation who cannot remember how dirty Democrats are: Gov. of Illinois, Gov. of New York, Gov. of Puerto Rico, and now Gov. of New Mexico. All in the last 12 months.

Stay tuned, lots more on the way.

What you are saying is that if they didn't get the Constitution perfect, then we have to throw it out, and write a new "perfect" one. That will only happen after another Civil War. And I wouldn't count on you or people who think like you winning it.

Not no, but hell no on throwing out the constitution, it's as fine a document as was ever written. Yes, we had to add amendments as needed and both those on the left and right would like more, but thankfully it is not a casual process.
Talk of another civil war is a bit of a stretch in my opinion.

The internet is a release valve for the insane or nearly insane. Many posts we assume that were written by a detailed poster, over time reveal themselves to be unbalanced. That doesn't refute their argument as they may have the proper perspective. But we do need to weigh untrusted postings carefully in the anonymous world.

one would get a -1 in their sanity rating for posting on reddit.

(back in later) Yes, I think Catton put it something like ... Rawlins's job was to save the man who would save the Union. No discussion of Grant's alleged drinking is complete without consideration of Rawlins.

I don't have much time to be here today, but I just had to come by to offer my compliments to the feds for not backing down on efforts to clean up New Mexico politics. It is at times nauseating for decades that I know of. Luckily, NM has grown a fabulous high tech sector that hasn't fallen under the control of these guys. But keep up the good work, prosecutors, if any of you are here!

re: #126 Shug

How can the senate vote to expel a lawful appointee, yet allow Ted Stevens to finish his term?

Becuase, in the view of the Democrats, allowing Ted Stevens to stay in his seat till his successor is sworn in gives them the opprtunity to keep the "Republicans are corrupt!1!1!" meme out in the media as long as possible; inversely, any hint of corruption or criminal activity from the Democrats is either nipped in the bud by the transition team (wanna bet that Dear Leader's team made Richardson an "offer he couldn't refuse" to get him to drop his SecComm nom?) or minimized/swept under the rug by the MFMSM (Ayers/Dohrn, Wright, Rezko, the LA Times tape, ad nauseum).

358 SanFranciscoZionist  Sun, Jan 4, 2009 3:34:30pm

This will cheer up a number of local Asian writers and activists--they don't care for Richardson (my mother always said not to say that you hate someone), and have been very cranky of late about the appointment.

Darn it- We thought we had gotten rid of him, finally.

NM is a pay to play state. I have no doubt Richardson gave the contract to the company that gave him the most money. He also never lets anything happen unless he can take credit for it and it makes him look good.

When he was elected we had a billion dollar surplus, and now the state is in the hole something like 400 million dollars.

Comments on Grant are circling the truth. He was a brilliant tactician and he could communicate to his supordinates EXACTLY what he wanted done.
As in the case of Patton, he'd tell his subordinates what he wanted accomplished NOT how to go about it. That was up to them and the results were invariably mission success.
Grant was what one might call an easy drunk. And what excesses he had were attributable to the lonelyness of separation from Julia and his children.
Back to the topic (my this crowd does wander with a subject don't we?)
NM politics are and have been for a LONG time corrupt.

What I want to know (besides my long standing question that has yet to be answered ... Why is Vince Foster dead? Not how, but WHY? and)
what about this guy Rahm Emanuel? He stinks to high heaven with corruption and he gets NO MENTION in the MFMSM. WFT?

As we've all witnessed when you have an 'R' behind your name and you get into trouble that relationship is emphasized numerous times during the news cycle. But if you be a 'D' ... the association is overlooked or more likely ignored.

Finally, (place your bets) ... how many USAG's will be retained by the Obamantons? Or will it be a Klintonesque 'blood bath'? Now, it is normal during a change of administration that this a fait d'accompli but accepting ALL of them? Where WJC acted on (what was it?) 93 letters of resignation from the Attorney General's. Especially the folks in Arkansas who were finishing up the White Water investigation. The MFMSM didn't even squeek.
Thus I put the MFMSM in the same category as ObamUH ... as respectable entities in our day and age they are not, (as my fathers most damning lable was) ... They are complete and utter frauds.

I'll repeat my question ... why is Rahm Emanuel still around?
