Man, I just got the most bizarre african scam letter. This has to be something someone planted them with.

Reply-To: Major Samuel Kebelo
Subject: Do not fail to read and reply to this message
Mime-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Content-Length: 2547

Hello,

I pray that this email reaches you in the best of
health.

This letter may come to you as a surprise due to the
fact that we have not yet met. The message could be
strange but it's real and you will realise this if you
pay some attention to it.

I want to notify you about it at least for the sake of
your integrity. My name is Major Samuel Kebelo, a direct
and only remaining member of the wealthy Kebelo family
and great-nephew of the late, renowned war hero,General
Nuisance, formerly of the South African Air Force.I am
an astronaut with the South African Air Force (SAAF) and
presently on loan to the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA).In 2003 I left earth aboard the
Mars Rover, Spirit, along with my colleague, Major
Snafu.

Seven months later I arrived on Mars.Prior to departing
earth,I deposited the amount of US$ 11,600,000 (Eleven
million, six hundred thousand United States dollars) in
four safety galvanized trunk boxes in a European
financial institution which will be disclosed to you
upon your acceptance of my proposal.Last year, during
the course of our research on Mars, Major Snafu and I
were captured by a group of rebel Klingons who inflicted
great torturous pain upon me with their throbbing anal
probes. After a few weeks of enduring the physical pain,
they released us.

Major Snafu eventually died from his injuries and I
barely survived. As a direct result of this unimaginable
cruelty, I am now very ill with a ruptured uterus.
Sadly, my condition has defiled all forms of medical
treatment, though it is my stroke and fibroid problems
that bother me most.

I am writing this mail to you on my laptop from my
hospital bed in the Martian capitol of Zhwrong.
I now have only a few weeks to live and I am far too ill
to endure the long journey back to my Johannesburg
home. Therefore I have decided to donate the bulk of my
fortune to a church or charitable organisation that
will utilize this money in the manner which I shall
impart to you later.

In return for your assistance, I shall
authorise you to keep 30% of this fund for your trouble
and aggravation plus an additional 10% to cover your
expenses.

When I receive your interest via my mail box,I shall
give you more details of the transaction.Waiting
urgently for your response as I do not have much time to
live on this planet earth.

Sincerely yours,
Major Samuel Kebelo (Astronaut),

Franken wins Minnesota Senate seat in recount

MINNEAPOLIS (Reuters) - Democrat Al Franken beat Republican incumbent Norm Coleman to win the U.S. Senate seat from Minnesota, officials conducting a final recount said on Monday nearly two months after the November 4 election.

This is the equivalent of watching a 3 year old play with a nail gun.

But on the bright side. just imagine the damage he can do to the Democrats.

Zombie had commented on the prior thread that the burka-wearer (assumed to be a woman) has a flier that says "Let Said Live".

Not sure if this is the same Said, but the perhaps it is the same Sa'id that Michael Leeden refers to today -

Sa’id Jalili, the very important secretary of the “Supreme National Security Council,” hit the airwaves of Al Manar TV to call on “the Arab and Islamic countries and other countries that have an independent will” to fight for a Hamas victory in Gaza and deliver a forceful blow to “the Zionist entity.”

If that is the case, then we have a nice Iranian Islamist sympathizer in Anaheim.

Traditional fairytales 'not PC enough'

Favourites such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella and Rapunzel are being dropped by some families who fear children are being emotionally damaged.

A third of parents refused to read Little Red Riding Hood because she walks through woods alone and finds her grandmother eaten by a wolf.

One in 10 said Snow White should be re-named because "the dwarf reference is not PC".

Rapunzel was considered "too dark" and Cinderella has been dumped amid fears she is treated like a slave and forced to do all the housework.

The poll of 3,000 British parents - by TheBabyWebsite.com - revealed a quarter of mothers now rejected some classic fairy tales.

Environment minister Sammy Wilson: I still think man-made climate change is a con

I think in 20 years’ time we will look back at this whole climate change debate and ask ourselves how on earth were we ever conned into spending the billions of pounds which are going into this without any kind of rigorous examination of the background, the science, the implications of it all. Because there is now a degree of hysteria about it, fairly unformed hysteria I’ve got to say as well.

Jpost reports heavy clashes in Northern Gaza.

Live footage from Al-Jazeera showed numerous explosions and fires in the area where the soldiers were said to be operating. Heavy firepower could be heard, and reports told of dozens of artillery shells, as well as air support which had been concentrated in the area.

Just over an hour earlier, the IAF bombed at least 40 smuggling tunnels along the Philadelphi Corridor on Gaza's southern border with Egypt. There were no immediate reports of casualties in the strikes.

They're waaayyyy behind the curve in England. When I was growing up, all the traditional fairy tales were rejected and roundly condemned as deeply racist because all the characters were white people. I was raised on PC-approved fairy tales in nursery school: Anansi the Spider (from Africa), Coyote the Trickster (Native American), etc. And this was, let's just say, quite a while ago.

FOX news is reporting that "something grave" has happened to the Israeli military inside Gaza. Further details are being blacked out.

/ruh roh, not good

A twitter feed "from the other side" said that 4 Israeli's were killed when Hamas detonated a wired building while the IDF was inside.

I am hesitant to post that, and even more hesitant to believe it.

By all reports Hamas has been releasing INTENSE propaganda from the ground.

A friend of mine got off the phone with a relative in the IDF who had been fighting in Gaza who was very lightly wounded... apparently his unit alone has killed at least 40 terrorists, and they are generally kicking butt in there.

I'm sure if something big happened, we will find out in the next couple of hours.

I don't think Aborigines get much of a say in your country. Don't they have their land stolen and aren't they treated abymissmally? And they're not out to destroy you given half the chance? It's the same in America, Indians are second class citizens there and what about all the other natives colonized by Europeans? Why is it you nor anyone else seems to care a jot about them?"

On market news, the Dow dropped 81.80 points, the S&P 500 dropped 4.35 points, while oil increased to $48.56 due mainly to the Gaza Strip action.

One interesting bit of data that you will not hear from the MSM. Even though the indexes dropped today, gainers lead decliners by a factor of 2 to 1. Of the 3125 issues on the NYSE, 2049 gained on the day, 1014 lost on the day and 62 issues were unchanged.

When you start seeing more gainers than losers, even on a down day, it's a good sign.

The volatility index also dropped slightly on the day.

Basically, the swing traders took a profit from the last few day's of increase. Cars sales were not as bad as anticipated.

Remember, good news will start being published by the MSM after January 20th.

That's one of the big problems with housing like this in my little city. They get new houses that start out sparkling and shiny and new- and the residents just cannot understand why they don't stay that way all by themselves.

two comments from that page:

Houses require maintenance. It is highly unlikely that most people who are given a house without having to work for it are willing to get a job and save money to maintain or improve their home. People with a "gimme" attitude will always neglect what they don't respect or didn't earn.

Having been the former owner of rentals I learned in a hurry that things such as "cockroaches, skin ailments" and a lot of the other complaints came from nasty personal habits and poor sanitation practices by the inhabitants. When you've been given a home, you are responsible for its maintenance.

Anyone interested in ancient history, as I was on Saturday, would do well to stay away from the book that I bought, Norman Cantor's Antiquity. My eyebrows were raised when it made the statement, "Rome was tolerant towards religion." Excuse me? Are we talking about the same Rome that I think we're talking about? After looking it up on Amazon, seeing its 2.5/5 rating out of 31 reviews and reading the truth about this book I wish I had kept the receipt. Here's one review that should scary anybody away from this piece of junk:

I am a prolific reader of historical novels, so when I saw "Antiquity" by Norman Cantor, I was intrigued. Inside the covers, however, lies one of the worst researched, terribly opinionated, and worse, outright disingenuous books purporting to be historical analysis I have ever read.

One could chalk this up to a novice's first attempt, but Cantor is a well known author with his work on Medieval life. Perhaps, under a rush of a deadline he forgot that history is supposed to be told truthfully. He skewers or ignores facts, presents blantantly opinionated views which leave a novice reader with a wholly untruthful view of what happened, and provides no documentation of research for his outlandish postulations (presented as fact) of actions, locales or politics which he covers.

Any lizard suggestions for a book that might actually be worth reading? I'm no historian but the last year or so I've gained an interest in reading history. Antiquity claims to be from Sumeria to the fall of Rome but doesn't really touch on anything before 300 B.C. or anything non-Egyptian. I'd like to learn more about the Hittites, the Byzantines, and the Assyrians.

Another Dalton or Maunder Minimum would not be a good thing. The less energy the sun puts out, the less heat reached the Earth. Also, there is a theory out there that suggests that increased cosmic rays from lower solar activity causes increased cloud formation. Increased cloud formation can cause even more heat to be reflected instead of reaching the surface.

re: #266 3 wood

This why I keep saying that a year from now our problem will be inflation, not recession.

IMO Mortgages should hit around 4.5% and stay there for 6 to 9 months. The hit to the money supply has been huge, and mark-to-market rules have had an impact on money supply that the M1, M2, M3 measures don't account for. So for the money supply to trigger inflation we need lending to take off and that will only happen after the housing market bottoms and bad inventory moves off the books.

The real interesting thing will be the housing boom that follows - you will have a bunch of people unwilling to sell because they have such cheap mortgages at rates they will never see again, and when inflation does hit (and it will) the incentive to stay intensifies. Buyers will be hunting high and low for inventory in 3 years.

That will be our last freebie bubble, IMO. After this one if we bubble the economy again the dollar will be utterly destroyed unless we create a sustained capacity to "pay down" our trade deficit.

Anyway - I give it 24 months before the inflation starts really kicking in. Too much housing inventory to chew through.

Or when one med student marries another med student and then the two graduate.

I thought that was when two people in med school get married and one quits school to support the other one and when the other one graduates, divorces the one who didn't. Wait a minute, that's "paradigm". My mistake.

There then is a brief comment which would indicae that it was taken when the IDF moved into Gaza - so its pretty recent!

Coolest BASE jumping video I have ever seen

Wow, that video had me on the edge of my chair the whole time. I was gritting my teeth each time a new outcrop was looming before them, I almost couldn't watch when they were buzzing the road! I sent the link to turnspawn and turnspawn2 telling them they better never try this. Great link.

Happy first Monday 2009 open thread all, I've been on vacation and missed hanging out the last couple weeks. Hey and since this is an open tread I might as well come out and get this off my ass, my doctor wants me to have a Colostomy and I am soooo not looking forward to it. I'm going to ponder his request for awhile, don't see why it couldn't wait a while longer. On the brighter side my cholesterol was so low it blew him away, lower than his.

Well time to go walk the lab along the American, take care all.

No doubt about that. My point in this is they're stealing races my very narrow margins. Almost did in in FL in '00, they did it with the Gorton / Cantwell race in '00 in retrospect, and '04 in WA and '08 in MN.

All those races the margins were 2000 or less. Just a few % of those voting 3rd party out conscience would have made the (D) fraud irrelevant.

Yes we need to fight this on all fronts. One of those fronts is talking with those who for the most part are conservative / right leaning / classical liberal, that voting 3rd party gives (D)s a better shot at stealing an election.
