Tech Note: Comment Ratings

Science • Views: 1,837

One feature readers have requested for our comment ratings is the ability to simply cancel a rating (aka, a “ding”) and remove a vote. The method that we’ve been using only allowed you to reverse your ding — in other words, you could only change your rating from plus to minus. Once you threw your hat in the ring, it stayed there.

But now, comment ratings behave differently; if you reverse your rating, it removes it entirely and adds/subtracts one from the overall rating, and your name vanishes from the ding list (which you see by clicking the rating number itself).

This puts you back to square one, so to speak, and you can then rate the comment either up or down again — both the plus and minus buttons will be clickable.

There should be a button called "Present" for this eventuality.

Looks great, just don't allow comments to be buried, I hate that, reminds me of digg where opinions are suppressed.

26 bosforus  Mon, Jan 5, 2009 3:26:29pm

I'd still like to see a category under "Show top rated links" where you could see the "worst rated links".

Some interesting stuff gets down-dinged into oblivion because people don't like the story, especially in the "moonbat" category.

Maybe a ding should age into place. If more than ten minutes have passed, you should be prompted, "Are you sure?", and if more than an hour has passed, there should be another confirmation, "Are you really sure?", and if two hours have passed, you have to give a reason, your home phone number, and pay a ten dollar fee per the LGF sanity clause.

BURLINGTON, Vt. - For Nicole Zarrillo, seeing a snowboarder with one of Burton Snowboards' new Playboy designs at a Vermont ski slope underscored the reasons why many Vermonters - including her boss - are protesting the new men's snowboards.

"When you really think about it, it's a young man standing on top of a naked woman's body," said Zarrillo, 38, an office manager for a nonprofit based in Burlington, also home to Burton's headquarters. "I probably could have gotten past it, because I try to have an open mind, but seeing it like that, it's offensive."

Great quote from the hunt for red october...I read that book like 6 times over the years.. Did you know That because a 120 pages of the book Jack Ryan wasn't even mentioned that had to do a major rewrite of the screenplay?

According to Tom Clancy himself (in an interview with Martin Harry Greenberg in The Tom Clancy Companion) The Hunt For Red October didn't originally start out intended to be a Jack Ryan novel. Clancy had already written Patriot Games (the novel that was in fact the first in the series) and had shelved Red Rabbit (the actual second novel) half-finished because he couldn't decide where to take the story. Red October was essentially a follow-on thematically to Red Storm Rising (which Clancy co-wrote with Larry Bond), albeit set in a different "world" (one where there is no Sir John Hackett-style Third World War in Europe). His original intention was that Marko Ramius, Red October's Captain, and Bart Mancuso, the CO of USS Dallas, were to be the heroes of the book. But after the first third, he realized he needed an intelligence officer to "put together" the clues that would lead Mancuso to take the risk that Ramius was not (as advertised by the Russians) a renegade getting ready to salvo his nukes.

And Ryan already existed, ready to take on the job.

Clancy used a phrase I've heard, and used myself. "The story was writing itself". It happens more often than you might think in fiction writing.

And sometimes, the story, and characters, go off on tangents that the writer doesn't see coming.

There is an interesting play on this point. The feminist theory depends heavily on the theory of "objectification" which happens to fit in neatly with the Islamic dogma that prohibits representation. Increasingly abstracted visualizations allow for an entirely artificial construct of reality.

Someone Finally Looked Up What "Disproportionate Force" Really Means

It is long past time that we stop having to listen to critics of Israel make up their own versions of what 'Disproportionate Force' means and find out what International Law actually says.

Michael Totten, in Gaza and the Law of Armed Conflict actually investigates how International Law addresses the issue, referring to the Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC)

The LOAC arises from a desire among civilized nations to prevent unnecessary suffering and destruction while not impeding the effective waging of war. A part of public international law, LOAC regulates the conduct of armed hostilities. It also aims to protect civilians, prisoners of war, the wounded, sick, and shipwrecked. LOAC applies to international armed conflicts and in the conduct of military operations and related activities in armed conflict, however such conflicts are characterized.

Totten writes:

Proportionality, in short and according to the law, “prohibits the use of any kind or degree of force that exceeds that needed to accomplish the military objective.”

Isn't it the LLLs who are constantly going on about "international law"?

Too bad they have no idea what they're talking about.

You need to expand that analysis with a discussion of the triumph of non-representational art in the West, followed by the overt politicization of art to the exclusion of aesthetics, and a side-discussion of the loss of aesthetic skills and appreciation in the population at large, even as the obsession with "designers" and "designer names" increases.

Given time and my own lack of talent I might. Your precis is on target. Once I had the pleasure of meeting Robert Hughes who had been the art critic for Time back in the Stone Age, he is unfortunately confined to a wheelchair and also unfortunately virulently anti-Bush. However he can be witty and perceptive as only an Australian art critic can be. His Shock of the New was a great survey of the strengths and weaknesses of Modernism. I recommend it.

So - the boycott of all sponsors to NBC/MSNBC for permanently banning Ann Coulter starts when and where, exactly?

Tomorrow, apparently.

"We are just not interested in anyone so highly critical of President-elect Obama, right now," a TODAY insider reveals. "It's such a downer. It's just not the time, and it's not what our audience wants, either."

For the book, Coulter reportedly received the most-lucrative advance ever paid to a conservative author.

The TODAY show eagerly invited the author months ago, for her first network interview on GUILTY.

The exclusive was to air during the show's 7 AM hour. The cut came Monday afternoon.

Coulter was also to appear on the TODAY's fourth hour. A host even teased the segment saying the 'conservative pit bull and bestselling author' would be a guest.

NBC's cable outlet, MSNBC, will also become a Coulter-free zone, insiders explain. Morning host Joe Scarborough is said to be concerned with the new ban. "He's working to overrule it," tips a source.

Developing...

Hoops, I respect the heck out of you for building 'em, and pingjockey for sailing 'em. I was introduced to Red October in a Theatre Arts class in college (auditing courses for fun) by my prof, a retired Navy Senior Chief who'd served in diesel boats in the postwar days with PACFLT. He said that when the dockworkers welded steel straps over the rescue buoy housing well (or as he called it, the "I'm Dead" buoy), they knew they were heading for either the Chinese coast or the Russian coast, usually somewhere like Hangzhou or Vladivostok on "intelligence" missions (you know what he meant, I'm sure). And that "avoiding confrontation" be d***ed, they had warshots loaded on COMSUBPAC's direct orders.

I was surprised that he actually liked Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea (TV version), which I loved as a kid and still do even today. He said that the stories were far-fetched, being science fiction for the most part, but the way Seaview was run rang true with sub drivers.

He was profoundly unimpressed with Seaquest DSV. That made two of us.

re: #308 eon

That made two of us.

cheers

This story is unclassified..back sometime in the 80's the Navy really wanted to F**k with the Russian fleet..So some Officer Comes up with the idea to ping every single ship and sub in the Russian fleet at the exact moment.

There are dummies to spare in the House, they get hidden generally. Senators tend to be more visible. Partly that is because the Senate is a collection of 100 people each of whom thinks that they ought to be the President. Idiots, bigots, incompetents and alcoholics can last for decades while on public display. Hollywood during they heyday of the studio system was less effective at protecting the stars. Despite that I'd hope that the Senate is less likely to cultivate gross stupidity than the other place. The 17th amendment stands as a shining example of the effect of the liberal good intentions of the Pregressive Movement and its partner in muckraking journalism. plus ca change.

I envision tinfoil hats with satellite dishes perched atop them at idiotic angles.

GOP unusually resistant to Obama tax cut

Republicans normally have never seen a tax cut they didn’t love – but that doesn’t seem to be the case with the economic package being prepared by President-elect Barack Obama.

Key GOP members on the Hill are responding warily to word that Obama’s stimulus plan will include about $300 billion worth of tax cuts, expressing tempered support for providing relief but unease about the size of the overall stimulus plan and who will benefit from the cuts.

Republican congressional leaders would like to ensure that the relief includes middle-class and upper-middle class individuals and families – not just those who pay little or no taxes.

A central part of Obama’s tax cut proposal will include a tax credit – $500 per individual or $1,000 per family – that fulfills his campaign’s aim to eliminate taxes for about 10 million low-income workers and offer relief to those who pay no taxes at all.

“Is this going to go to taxpayers or just to those who don’t pay taxes?” asked a GOP Senate leadership aide. “There are a lot of questions.”

Appearing on ABC’s “This Week” Sunday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) spoke approvingly of tax cuts in general but floated Republicans’ preferred approach.

I'm really liking Mitch McConnell's "not so fast" approach to The O.

Growing Links Seen Between Hells Angels and Neo-Nazis

Observations of the far-right scene by agents of the country's domestic intelligence agency, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, revealed connections to motorcycle gangs, the government said in a recent statement. It also noted "occasional" indications of "joint activities and meeting places as well as isolated cases of cooperation between right-wing extremists (especially skinheads) and motorcycle gangs, primarily at a local level."

Just what the world needed- nazis on motorcycles.

What do y'all think of this letter to the editor from the Chair of Middle East studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara? [Link: blogs.venturacountystar.com...]

That's a great example of the cognitive egocentrism that Richard Landes talks about:

The projection of one’s own mentality or “way of seeing the world” onto others, e.g., the teenager who is obsessed with sex, and assumes the same about everyone else. In the current situation of globalization, cognitive egocentrism has its greatest impact in the political relationships between people coming from civil societies and those raised in prime divider societies. Since the basic political principle of Prime divider societies is “rule or be ruled,” “do onto others before they do onto you,” political actors from those cultures assume the same zero-sum, domineering intentions in their opponents (the “enemy”). Since the basic political principles of civil societies is “I’ll give up trying to dominate and trust you to give it up as well,” “if I’m nice to you, you will be nice in return,” assume positive-sum attitudes in their opponents (the “other”). The current situation testifies to a dangerous mis-apprehension that works to the distinct disadvantage to civil society.

Shouldn't an endorsement from Sharpton solidify what a horrific choice this really would be?

Endorsements from Bloomberg (who is apparently about to switch parties again) and Sharpton translate to; "She's controllable, and will vote however we tell her to."

My guess is, those two are breathing a huge sigh of relief that Hillary is "moving on"- to a foreign policy slot.

They need to be careful and they need to be better about articulating their position. If they are able to explain to the average American worker that the bulk of the recipients of the tax break will be for people who don't actually pay taxes I think they will have their support.

International law is not a suicide pact

International law is not a suicide pact. Rather, it offers an authoritative body of rules and procedures that permits states to express their inherent right of self-defense. When terrorist organizations celebrate the explosive "martyrdom" of Palestinian children, and when Palestinian leaders unashamedly seek religious redemption through the mass-murder of Jewish children, the terrorists have no legal right to demand sanctuary. Anywhere.

Under international law terrorists are always hostes humani generis, "Common enemies of humankind." Even according to the most ancient sources of international law, such murderers must be severely punished wherever they are found. For their arrest and prosecution, jurisdiction is "universal." Palestinian terrorism, even during its present "slow" period (when contending Hamas and Fatah factions are too busy attacking each other), is far worse than most people ever imagine. Using bombs filled with nails, razor blades and screws dipped in rat poison; the killers maim and burn Israeli civilians with abundant cheers from their neighbors and with warmest blessings from local clergy. As for those "commanders" who actually direct and control the suicide-bombers, they typically cower for protection in assorted hiding places. At times they issue loud calls for their wives, mothers and daughters to stand between themselves and the Israelis.

Can anybody elaborate?

Given Franken's complete lack of experience in any dignified setting, let alone high elective office, and his penchant for outrageous statements, foul language, tax problems, and even violence; as well as ongoing questions about the Minnesota recount and its exclusion of military and other likely Coleman votes; it does seem a little risky to assume that the completion of his term is an absolute certainty.

Doubtful they will seat Franken before Burris. They have a better reason to bar Franken and they know they are under the watchful eye of many ready to scream racism.

OT

There is no need to be downcast or depressed over Al Franken's probable selection to the senate.

Cheer up, it is going to be a fun six years, assuming the Franken-fool lasts that long before he is impeached or forced to resign.

We could not have a better object of ridicule and mockery, or a better source of foolish stunts and asinine quotes, if we had invented him from scratch for that very purpose.

I almost down-dinged you for that because, gosh darnit, he is just not that funny!

Bush chooses allies for civilian high honor

WASHINGTON (AP) — President George W. Bush is giving the nation's highest civilian award to three foreign leaders who have been among his most loyal partners on the world stage, particularly in the Iraq war.

Bush is awarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Colombian President Alvaro Uribe and to two former leaders: former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and former Australian Prime Minister John Howard. Bush is conferring the prestigious award on his friends in an East Room ceremony on Jan. 13 — exactly one week before he leaves office, White House press secretary Dana Perino said Monday.

"The president is honoring these leaders for their work to improve the lives of their citizens and for their efforts to promote democracy, human rights and peace abroad," she said. "All three leaders have been staunch allies of the United States, particularly in combating terrorism."

I lived in Denver in the 70's when they finally arose from the ashes to put up some good teams...the fans were good people and a lot of fun...then in 78 they went berzerk with the best team ever!..and of course the Cowboys crushed them that SB....I still have a small affinity for the Broncos

I read an article that said a psychologist was called in to evaluate that defense (Lyle Alzado, Randy Gradishar, Tom Jackson, Louis Wright ...) and the psychologist said if they weren't playing football, they'd all be in prison.

Alzado admitted taking steroids, and before he died of brain cancer he went out of his way to tell everybody about how bad that was.
The rest of them have charities and do a lot of community work, and Louis Wright, I think, still coaches high school football.

re: #559 buzzsawmonkey

This doctor from the Land of Vidkun Quisling talks about "children playing on a roof." What type of parents have their children play on a roof in the middle of an armed incursion?

Not so much Quisling--he screwed his own people. But antisemitism is crazy bad in Norway.

Norwegian anti-Israelis keep repeating that their anti-Israelism is not anti-Semitism. One only has to check their statements against the European Union's working definition of anti-Semitism to see that this is often untrue. Norway has a long history of anti-Semitism. In 1929 a great majority of its parliament voted to forbid shechita (Jewish ritual slaughter) - several years before Hitler's Germany did so. It is still forbidden, although hunters, including government ministers, can legally kill animals in as cruel a manner as they want. Last year Norway aimed to kill 1,000 whales, but succeeded in finding only 500. If all needs for kosher beef were met by local shechita,it would require at most several tens of cows annually.

During the war, the Norwegians were the ones who rounded up Jews and robbed them before shipping them off to Auschwitz. After the war, emergency help was given to what the Norwegians called the two "hardest-hit groups" - fishermen and residents of the northern part of the country. The Jews, however, were robbed further by the Norwegian democrats. During the restitution process, they had to pay for the administration of those of their assets recovered from the looters. About 10 years ago a senior Norwegian Nazi official proudly told a Jewish visitor that he had no regrets, and still had paintings and furniture taken from Jews.

Joe Walsh - The Confessor

If you look at your reflection in the bottom of a well,
What you see is only on the surface.
When you try to see the meaning, hidden underneath,
The measure of the depth can be deceiving.
The bottom has a rocky reputation
You can feel it in the distance the deeper down you stare.
From up above it's hard to see but you know when you're there.
On the bottom words are shallow.
On the surface talk is cheap.
You can only judge the distance by the company you keep
In the eyes of the CONFESSOR.

In the eyes of the Confessor,
There's no place you can hide.
You can't hide from the eyes (of the Confessor)
Don't you even try.
In the eyes of the Confessor
You can't tell a lie,
You cannot tell a lie (to the Confessor)
Strip you down to size,
Naked as the day that you were born,
Naked as the day that you were born.
(Tremendous guitar solo)
Take all the trauma, drama, comments,
The guilt and doubt and shame
The what if's and if only's
The shackles and the chains
The violence and aggresion,
The pettiness and scorn,
The jealousy and hatred,
The tempest and discord,
AND GIVE IT UP!

Hate to say this, but if the troopies are doing the job they are trained in, this will happen. Working so close with weapons and bullets makes this a problem. Best tax cut to be made is a lowering,if not elimination of the Corporate tax.

Simple, Fair, Across the Board Tax Cut:

Raise the exemptions to the minimum amount one must earn just to be housed and fed decently at current market cost. (i.e. approx 12,000 to 15,000 usd for an adult, 7,000 to 12,000 usd per child) Which I believe is the purpose of the exemptions in the first place; to only tax the EXTRA (beyond basic living expenses) income one makes.
Connecticut did that for their income tax (the only thing done right in that mess).
Doing this would affect EVERYONE THE SAME but it would MEAN more to the poorer folks AND it would be very simple to enact without umpteen pages of exceptions and rules.

I like that as far as income tax. I think Corporate tax cuts would be the best stimulus possible. Lower consumer goods and attract other countries to start doing more business and production here.
Ireland went from36% to 12% rate on corp. tax and has the world fastest growing economy.
In short, stop taxing work, savings and investments, and you will get more of all of them.

I really despise Obama. Creating fear as often as possible so he can get his socialism in place. We are not anywhere near the great depression but that doesn't stop him from throwing it around to keep the American people in a constant state of fear. Has anything really changed in your neck of the woods? Nothing has changed where I live. The lines at Kohl's were long. People spending money like there's no depression. Same at the Japanese restaurant I went to. And not cheap. Packed. The country is in such dire straights, yet Durbin managed somehow to find enough money to throw a huge party.

Obama has insisted that bold and quick action is necessary if the nation is to rebound from the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression. He has said repeatedly he wants a plan that will create 3 million new jobs.

The economic teams of new presidents often work behind the scenes with congressional leaders before their administrations move in, but Obama's direct and public involvement is highly unusual.

He arrived Sunday night in Washington and spent all of Monday at the Capitol before returning to the hotel where he has set up shop for the two weeks before his inauguration.

Later Obama attended a party at Bobby Van's restaurant, thrown by Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, the body's second ranking Democrat, for new members of the House and Senate and the Chicago press corps.

And so much for one President at a time.

Obama, who takes office two weeks from Tuesday, has said there can be only one president at a time — and he repeated that principle Monday "when it comes to foreign affairs." But when it comes to the floundering economy, he clearly feels he cannot sit by until the swearing-in.

"The reason we are here today is because the people's business cannot wait," Obama said as he arrived on Capitol Hill.

BTW. This is why the "fair tax" is dangerous. It is no more than a national sales tax. It will be easier to raise the rates on this type of system and it will put a drag on business. LOOK AT EUROPE'S VAT. That's part of the reason for the European economy being so stagnant.

Why are houses built to withstand rocket attacks again?

That's not the important part here, although it's usually the important part.

That says, if I'm reading it correctly, that housing for Israeli Arabs does not have to be up to the same code as housing used for Jews. I seriously doubt that in a major way.

Now, PALESTINIAN housing probably doesn't have to be up to the Israeli code, on account of it's not in Israel, and not subject to the Israeli version of OSHA.

They keep doing this--assuming that non-Israeli Arabs and Israeli Arabs have the same status under law. Which is sort of like assuming that a Canadian who's a naturalized U.S. citizen and a Canadian who isn't have the same legal status.

Obama's pushing this 700+ billion dollar plan through so fast, no one will have time to study it. Who knows what we'll be paying for.

WASHINGTON – President-elect Barack Obama plunged into rare pre-inaugural crisis talks with congressional leaders Monday, declaring the national economy was "bad and getting worse" and embracing tax cuts now expected to reach $300 billion. He predicted lawmakers would approve a mammoth revitalization package within two weeks of his taking office.

There are folks here (including Charles in some cases) who are much more liberal then me. And some issues where I take a more moderate approach then some regulars.

I think there is a common theme of strong national security, esp on the WOT (hence almost universal agreement on Israel's right to exist). More limited gov't.

I think the more divergent views on social issues is why this place can be called Classical Liberal more then right wing or conservative. It's just that in modern terminology, conservative is easiest label to use.

OK, time for me to risk a down ding again, but if you think Obama is going to make us a socialist nation, you may be surprised. Yes, the government has grown under GW, and the bail outs are flying left and right and I suspect that will continue under Obama until the economy turns around, but I don't expect the country to become socialist by a long shot.

Wonder how we'll be able to tell the economy has turned what with Biden and Obama talking it down?

re: #679 ciaospirit

Obama's pushing this 700+ billion dollar plan through so fast, no one will have time to study it. Who knows what we'll be paying for.

the Pelosi/Obama Doctrine.

Regardless whether the final version spends $750 billion or some figure north of $1 trillion, the measure will be an economic sham. First, if the bill is paid with a blizzard of freshly printed greenbacks, it will invariably lead to galloping inflation, which, of course, destroys everybody’s wealth. If the funds are borrowed, the government will not only be setting the stage for inflation, but it will also be increasing the national debt and constricting credit. Second, as multiple studies have shown, government spending has little stimulative value. One of those studies was done by Obama’s new chief economic advisor, Christina Romer of UC Berkeley, who found $3 in increased Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for every $1 in tax cuts. Increased spending generates at best a mere 40 cents of GDP growth on the dollar. Third, that 40 cents actually goes to special interests like labor unions, politically influential contractors in favored industries and state and local political allies of the party in power. Odds are Obama will eventually rue the day he signed off on this sham.

Are insects a WMD?

Pathogens are transmitted in different ways. Some reside in "resevoirs" which are animals, many time insects, where the virus can spread until it may infect humans.

A good example of this are diseases spread by mosquitos.

An aide to Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV , D-W.Va., who served as chairman of the committee in the 110th Congress, said, “I think, based on press reporting if it proves correct, Sen. Rockefeller has some concerns about his selection. Not because he has any concerns about Panetta, whom he thinks very highly of, but because [Panetta] has no intelligence experience and because he has believed this has always been a position that should be outside of the political realm.”

Panetta will provide cover for Obama. this is all about Obama - not the safety of our nation.

LEON PANETTA FOR CIA DIRECTOR: Richard Miniter comments: “Obama needs to explain why an inexperienced former congressman and lobbyist will be a better CIA director than the guy doing the job now.” Meanwhile, Dianne Feinstein may oppose him. Meanwhile, I saw Newt Gingrich on TV saying that the CIA “can’t be run by an outside political appointment.” I’m not so sure that it shouldn’t be, as I believe there’s some cleanup that needs to take place. Here’s a similar point from Angelo Codevilla: “Leon Panetta may not know very much about foreign affairs or defense matters. He is wholly unacquainted with the questions and quarrels that have roiled the US intelligence community for a half century. But, as veteran political warrior, he will do what President Obama expects of him: prevent CIA from making war upon him as it made war on George W. Bush.

Ok. So you know what it has been like to pay your own taxes, over and above that of a regular employee.

I think most people who think critically, see Obama for what he is. He has never really held a private sector job, just like Clinton. Not to say that Bush 43 has been the fiscal conservative, he has not. Nor have the previous Republicans who promised to tow the line.

He has campaigned openly with an eat the rich platform, and campaign promises that monetarily can't be met unless he raises taxes. A trillion dollars in new spending, where does this come from? Seriously, where does this come from? The public sector does not produce anything, they are a net drain on our domestic product.

He has proposed exponential increases in this area. This is socialism in a nutshell.

You echoed one of my thoughts. I've often wondered why GW was considered a conservative, at least fiscally. I can only hope that Obama moves to the right of him fiscally once we get out of the mess we're in.

I have not been able to vote for a Republican recently because I fear the social conservatives more then the fiscal libs. From what I read, the GOP wants to move even further right socially, which leaves me a choice between two evils.
I think Obama will be more of a moderate both ways then you may think, but time ill tell.
