UN School Used by Terrorists As a Weapons Dump

The UN and the mainstream media are wailing and accusing Israel of war crimes (yes, again) after the IDF returned fire at a UN school from which Palestinians were firing mortars.

The explosives and booby traps installed in the school by Hamas then blew up, killing dozens of people.

And the world blames Israel.

30 reported killed in blast at UN school.

At least thirty people were reportedly killed and 53 wounded in an explosion in a UN-run school in the town of Jabalya in the northern Gaza Strip, according to Palestinians. The IDF issued a statement saying the school grounds were used by terrorists to fire mortar shells at the troops.

The infantrymen returned mortar shell fire into the school grounds, the army said. Defense officials told The Associated Press that booby-trapped bombs in the school triggered the secondary explosions which killed scores of Palestinians on the site.

In 2007, the IAF actually filmed some of these terrorists at a Gaza school, firing mortars into Israel. The media don’t seem to care.

Hamas couldn't care about who dies in this war - they have fully embraced death as a means to an end itself - the Palestinian dead are props to be used to bludgeon Israel in the international media; the terrorists get to claim martyrdom, and any Israelis who are killed by Hamas fulfills their jihad against the Jews and infidels.

Expect this scenario to play out again, but I do have to say that Israel managed to get out a response far quicker this time than they did in the Qana incident. They have learned their lesson, and they are doing a better job managing the information war.

That doesn't mean that Israel will always be perfect and avoid civilian casualties, but Israel tries harder than anyone else to avoid collateral damage.

Hamas, on the other hand, goes out of its way to maximize civilian casualties.

I don't know why they cry so much; death is what they want "more than anything"
May they be granted what they desire so much.

Close, but I think Hamas et al have embraced death not as a means, but as their actual end. Who dies, they don't care too much (as you pointed out, their martyrdom cult allows them to view their own dead as in paradise, spiritually, while their bodies are used as physical propaganda, and a dead infidel is just so much gravy to them), just so long as somebody dies.

Hopefully, the IDF can oblige them.

Essentially what we have here is a varitation of "The CNN Effect." The term was coined to describe how the 24-hour new cycle led by CNN and other media outlets "pushed the West toward War in Kosovo." (See, Bahador, Babak. "The CNN Effect in Action", 2007.) In this case we have Western MSM outlets framing the Israeli-Hamas conflict in a manner to create enough public pressure to force the United States and other Western powers to turn against Israel based on "humanitarian grounds" and get the Israeli government to accept a return to the previous "cease-fire" with Hamas. The public is essentially manipulated by images and headlines without any discussion of causes and effects leading to the current confrontation, nor consequences of the "new" policy being advocated by the MSM (a return to a "cease-fire" observed, essentially unilaterally by Israel, until the time Hamas determines it is strong enough to increase its attacks upon Israel "breaking" the so-called "cease-fire."). In the long-run such policy shifts are problematic at best (Kosovo & Haiti) and a disaster at worst (Somolia). Hamas may be militarily inept but it definitely understands how to conduct its propoganda campaign.

67 RaiderDan  Tue, Jan 6, 2009 10:15:37am

One thing is clear though. The IDF clearly understands the propaganda war going over their heads in the MSM. To get the facts of Hamas fighters previously using the Gaza schools as weapons dumps so high up in an AP story is a small victory in itself. Reuters I'm sure won't have that up high in the lead, but we have to be grateful for small PR victories in such a hostile environment

To set the stage, Hamas invited/forced local residents to take refuge/be human shields at the school/munitions dump. Then when Israeli soldiers passed by the school, the Hamas terrorists fired mortar shells at the Israelis. The IDF responded by returning mortar fire, thereby setting off secondary explosions which killed the Palestinian civilians/human shields.

JERUSALEM — The Israeli military struck near a United Nations school in Gaza on Tuesday, killing at least 30 people among hundreds who had sought refuge at the school from the fighting in the beleaguered territory, the United Nations and hospital officials in Gaza said.

Gaza residents took refuge in a United Nations school as Israel’s offensive continued with artillery, helicopter and tank fire.

The United Nations and the hospital officials said those killed included men, women and children. The United Nations said that the Israeli army been given all the coordinates of United Nations facilities in Gaza, and that the schools and other facilities were all clearly marked. The number of those killed could not be immediately independently confirmed, and it was unclear whether the strike came from an Israeli tank or rocket or other artillery.

Its a given that Hamas is going to use human shields, and at this point its a given that the world press is going to shield Hamas too.

The relevant question is whether or not the IDF will finish what it needs to do before or after the Israeli gov't (eg Olmert etc) caves into external pressure and call off the assault.

In fact, Israeli's schools within Hamas rocket range are closed - to protect civilized children. One was whacked yesterday - but not much attention from MSM, no victims, you know.

Let's hope the IDF finds evidence of Iran supplied weapons at the UN school, er, rocket battery - now that will be a hoot, and a PR boost for the good guys.

The Prophet Mohammed never killed anyone himself (at least I don't think so...). He DID send zealous followers out on assassination missions several times, and personally ordered the slaughter of countless Jews at the hands of his army. Terror leaders are attempting to follow their prophet's example. Osama bin Laden tries to emulate Mohammed any way he can, including adopting his "soft spoken" demeanor.

re: #28 Guanxi88

I agree with the sentiment that they should get what they claim to crave, but I can't help noticing (and I'm not original in this observation) that for all their talk of loving death, their leaders are very solicitous of their own welfare.

Perhaps these folk should be thought of as hypocritical priests of a death cult; they preach it, but by golly, they don't put on the bomb vests, do they?

No, death and killing is how they get their jollies, but they want to make sure that they're around when it's all said and done.

re: #88 Kyle_st

It's all quite simple, really. Hamas intends to win the PR war because they can't win militarily, just as Hezbollah successfully did a couple of years ago.

Middle-Eastern terrorists, aided and abetted by Western media, will win this war in Gaza; that you can bet everything on.

Its only a question of time before Israel leaves and whatever is left of Hamas crawls out of its hole and declares victory over the "Zionist occupiers". That's inevitable.

But that's not the metric of Israeli success here. Nobody thinks that this action will entirely eliminate Hamas. Israel simply lacks the stomach to inflict the massive collateral damage that would be necessary to accomplish that.

If Israel *is* able to make a significant and lasting dent in Hamas' ability to carry out terror attacks, then this will be a "win" for Israel. As important, if Israel is able to make a significant and lasting dent in Hamas's standing within Palestine and the Arab world, then that would also be a "win" for Israel.

French TV network that broadcast the al-Durrah hoax now another fake:

French network apologizes for Gaza report
January 6, 2009

PARIS (JTA) -- A French television network has apologized for erroneously broadcasting a false report on Israel's Gaza operation.

Assisted by an anonymous posting, the French news blogger site Le Post proved a report Monday by France 2 television used an outdated amateur video of Palestinian casualties from an accidental truck explosion as current footage demonstrating the violence in Gaza.

France 2 also was responsible for a September 2000 report, accused of being a fake, of the supposed shooting death of a 12-year-old Palestinian boy, Mohammed al-Dura, by the Israeli army.

In the new video, the truck in question contained bombs belonging to Hamas and exploded on Sept. 23, 2005. Intended to illustrate the extent of Web reports on the Israeli offensive in Gaza, the video shows dead bodies of toddlers being laid out on a white sheet.

By Monday, Etienne Leenhardt, the joint director responsible for investigative reports, apologized to Le Post journalists for "an error on our part."

"The person who prepared the topic went too fast," he said. "It reminds us that we must be very attentive on verifying sources."

Leenhardt told Le Post that the network would apologize on its Tuesday afternoon daily report.

Meanwhile, a committee of independent experts is being formed to decide whether the video of the al-Dura shooting is indeed a fake. That video roused anti-Israel and anti-Semitic feelings across the globe, even fueling the subsequent mob lynching of two Israeli soldiers.

But it looks like the project may live on.....

The state, he said, will carry forward with modifications to proposed projects and will rely heavily upon input from Texans through more town hall meetings and an updated Web site.

He also made clear that, should toll lanes be added to various roads, tolls will be assessed only on those, and not existing lanes.

The renewed effort now will operate under the name "Innovative Connectivity Plan."

Saenz also said the state will continue to pursue various projects, including the Interstate 69 project. If, however, more lanes are needed along U.S. 59, the state will simply widen that roadway, Saenz said.

I'm not so sure it would be any worse than a strike on any other target of theirs.

Seems to me that this is the way to go all around. You've got the smiling leaders, the faithful murderers, and, in many cases, trucks loaded with weapons rolled out for the edification and amusement of their supporters.

I'm not saying you lay down a hurricane barrage of artillery, or carpet-bomb the place - I'm saying that a small(ish) strike might work wonders for peace in the area.

Would there be civilians killed? Almost certainly. Would the top leadership, cadres of their followers, and a good chunk of their arsenal be destroyed? Again, almost certainly.

Besides, it's not as if these rallies don't have explosions all their own:

Here are two snippets from The Muqata - showing what sort of men are serving in the IDF right now:

'6:38 PM Senior Golani Commander, Avi Peled who was also wounded yesterday evening, has already returned from hospitalization, and is back with his troops in Northern Gaza. He has resumed full operational command for Golani, and is continuing to lead the ground offensive, side by side with his troops.

6:30 PM An IDF Officer was seriously wounded in battle yesterday, Magad (Golani Division 13 commander) Oren Cohen's shoulder and arm were laced with shrapnel, and he lost a finger. Despite that, he is insistent that he get back to the front as quickly as possible; "I may have lost a finger, but I can still shoot".

That's a Golani soldier for you. 115% motivation. Note: Current IDF Chief of Staff, Gabi Ashkenazi is also from the famed Golani battalion.'

Nice little piece of info on the current IDF Chief of Staff!

Obama 'deeply concerned' about Palestinian, Israeli civilian casualties

[Link: www.jpost.com...]

Sounds reasonable, but why am I so suspicious of his statement? Oh yeah I know, it draws an equivalence between Hamas and Israel.

O.K. I've been dying to ask....

How exactly do they define "civilian"? Anyone not wearing a balaclava? A person not near a school, hospital, mosque, library, post office, drug store, goat shop....?

187 RaiderDan  Tue, Jan 6, 2009 10:45:59am

#73 Opinionated.

I was wrong. I thought that was an AP story. Turns out its from Jerusalem Post.

Naturally the NY Times and the rest of the MSM aren't including facts that don't fit the "narrative" as FloridaNole at #114 aptly noted. Simply put, Palestinians = Victims, Israeli = Nazi Aggressors, is the liberal journos template. That template sells papers and brings eyeballs to the page to readers outside of the US. They aren't going to change the "template" to fit the facts on the ground. The readers would just gravitate somewhere else to get their anti-Israeli hate on.

Still, IDF is doing better in counterspin. Far better than it did in 2006. Thats all you can do. Its using YouTube, its using Twitter, its using blogs to get its message out. Thats the new media environment.

Calling a press conference and hoping the Gen-X/Y biased, drunk, underpaid stringer hacks culled from Evergreen State College and UC Santa Cruz journalism departments report your views is too much to ask.

I was watching BBC TV last night. The interviewer was a well-spoken, youngish, pretty, blond, fair-skinned woman. The topic was Gaza.

During the course of an interview with the Israeli representative, the interviewer slowly morphed into a rude, hunched-over, snarling, mono-syllabic, attack dog. She constantly interrupted and barely allowed the guest to get a word in edgewise.

The "interview" culminated with her guttural retort to the effect that the continuation of the Hamas missiles were "quite convenient" for Israel in that they provided a pretext for the continuation of the IDF slaughter of the innocent civilians.

I wanted to kill her.

Think about it, the claim that we have only one President implies that it would not be right to state an opinion contrary to the current President's. If you agree with the current policy, you can clearly state that you agree.

Obama is implying his policy will be different. Different equals not supporting Israel.

I don't recall the UN calling for a ceasefire at that time. FNC had an hour long interview with a young guy who is the son of a founder of Hamas.
He himself headed 'Islamic Youth". He got busted & sent o an Israeli jail where he had an epiphany. He saw murder & torture done by Hamas to fellow Hamas. Spending too much time in the shower could put you under suspicion of collaboration. One of the perps was his uncle.
The kid converted to Christianity & escaped to San Diego.
He said that none of this is about land, it's all about Islam

I caught that one too. It takes a lot of what most people don't have to leave everything you've ever known--your family, country, religion--and follow your heart. Following his heart in this case led him to a place he was taught all his life to be enemy territory. He has courage in spades.

re: #146 Guanxi88
I think that an attack at a public rally like that would have more downside than upside for Israel.

At best they'd kill a few mid-level Hamas leaders, and a number of "grunts". Then Hamas would either stop holding these rallies altogether, or simply keep the valued assets out of them in the future. In other words, hitting a rally like this would basically be a one-shot deal.

Meanwhile, Israel would have to suffer the propaganda/public relations hit for attacking the crowd and killing present children, etc, for years.

Looking at this kind of thing for a while, I've come to the conclusion that second-guessing Israel's actions is generally a waste of time. If you understand that Israel is trying to minimize non-terrorist casualties, then its pretty much doing everything it can already. The only way Israel could do more is if it cedes that moral high ground.

Perhaps that's a worthwhile discussion, ie just how much collateral damage is it "appropriate" for Israel to inflict here, but that's a discussion Israel needs to have internally. I think Israel's "stomach" for collateral damage increases as Hamas' abilities increase, but its still going to be highly calibrated.

268 beermeister  Tue, Jan 6, 2009 11:00:38am

This is the fault of Hamas. If you comingle your troops, weapons and ammo with civilians then the fault lies with Hamas. The opposition has a right to take those targets out, especially since Hamas started the fight.

I believe this is from the text of the Geneva Convention -

The presence of a protected person may not be used to render certain points or areas immune from military operations.

Even if it wasn't, Israel would still have the right to defend. The media could mention Hamas started this. They could mention Ararat could have taken a more than fair deal offered up by Clinton. Unfortunately, some people listen to these fools.

Hamas knows the Israeli weak point - sensitivity to international condemnation - so the military goal is then to make them look like monsters.

Hamas needs the press to do their fighting for them.

I'd take it a step further.

Hamas continues to exists almost ENTIRELY because the international press covers for it.

If Hamas really got the sort of objective media coverage it deserved, its funding would dry up, and Israel would have carte blanche to do whatever it wanted within Gaza.

The contrast in the photo is terrible, but if you boost it, it looks like a normal pants leg, dusty, against a dusty background; the white stripe being some sort of decorative design on the side of the pant leg. The shadows seem about "right," too—nothing really sticks out as being an obvious forgery to me from where I'm sitting.

306 conrad  Tue, Jan 6, 2009 2:44:44pm

Two thoughts that seem somewhat contradictory: one, those living in Gaza have made a choice (for the most part.) When Fatah bugged out and Hamas took over, there have been ample opportunities to pick sides if you identify yourself as Palestinian. There have been and still exist ample and open means of traveling to the West Bank or to Jordan to get out of harms way. Those who have stayed have done so by choice in order to either fight the IDF in a losing battle hoping their deaths can be used as media fodder.

Second point (and the contradictory one); however, there is one other group of people, and this is who the Israeli's are always shown helping and takes a little explanation. Hamas runs Gaza like the IRA ran East Belfast in the 1970s. They have a legitimate arm of public service and public relations to gain good press and fund raising, but this good is mixed in and among the terrorists. Now, if you are a poor schmo just trying to live and can't move out, to keep you and your family safe, you need to pay homage and respect to the masters of your neighborhood (keep your mouth shut eyes to the ground and understand that you ARE being watched). What we saw last week of Hamas terrorists blowing the kneecaps off of "collaborators" or "defectors" is a mirror of what the IRA did. You either played ball, were crippled for life or were murdered, and Hamas makes no distinction between you , your kids, your relatives or your friends. They will make an example of any of the above to get their control message across! Credit where credit is due, for the most part, the IRA left families alone! Also, Hamas makes no distinction between labeling as "collaborators" and "defectors" those who work with Fatah as much as those who with the IDF. Or for that matter, just plain old disagree with the local Hamas-hole trying to set up a launcher in their front yard.

To close, my sincere prayer is that when the dust settles, the Palestinians will realize that the Arab world respects them about as much as they do the Jews in Israel. They need to pull their heads out of their collective butts and start working with the only group of people in the entire world who have supported them in education, medical, jobs, even gaining state hood: Israel! No one else takes them seriously, not even the hippies in Berkeley. My pipe dream is to see Israel, the West Bank and Gaza united and turned into the next Dubai in wealth and creativity. For this to happen, Hamas needs to be eliminated! That will truly "free Palestine". GO IDF!
