Posted anew: I'd been wondering when we'd hear from Zawahiri. Well, here he goes...

We will never stop until we avenge the death of all who are killed, injured, widowed and orphaned in Palestine and throughout the Islamic world," said Ayman al-Zawahiri in a new 10-minute audio recording released today on extreme Islamist Web forums.

The message is entitled "The Massacre in Gaza and the Siege of the Traitors".

Zawahiri refers directly to President-elect Barack Obama saying he has partnered with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, whom Zawahiri labels as a traitor to Islam.

So, let's see - Zawahiri still considers the US as the enemy, and that Obama isn't going to be treated any different than President Bush.

The mention of Mubarak makes sense, since Mubarak imprisoned Zawahiri and Zawahiri led the Muslim Brotherhood there before joining up and forming al Qaeda.

Oh yeah, and the stock death to Israel, infidels, and everyone who kills Muslims. Dirka dirka jihad stuff...

No sir.

Those dead Muslims at the hands of al Qaeda and other jihadis are martyrs because he says so.

The same thing with suicide bombings. They're acceptable because it kills infidels; even though Islamic law forbids suicide.

Islamic law is what he says it is, no matter how many dead pile up around him.

No charge for the clarification. /

Here's something from The Muqata:

'11:11 PM The Ultimate in Hypocrisy: UN's Secretary General: IDF defending itself from Hamas mortar fire "totally unacceptable"

New York - Israeli attacks on three schools run by the United Nations in the Gaza Strip in the last 24 hours, including one that killed more than 46 civilians on Tuesday, were "totally unacceptable and must not be repeated," UN Secretary General Ban Ki- moon said. The three schools were operated by the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in Gaza. The UN said about 15,000 Palestinians, who fled the fighting between Israel and Hamas, had found refuge in these schools as well as in more than 20 other schools in the territory.

Ban said in a statement that the locations of the schools had been given to the Israeli army and Israel was warned that its operations were endangering UN compounds.
"I am deeply dismayed that despite these repeated efforts, today's tragedies have ensued," Ban said. "These attacks by Israeli military forces which endanger UN facilities acting as places of refuge are totally unacceptable and must not be repeated."

The Muqata finds the UN's views on Israel, "totally unacceptable" as well.'

(No news about operations in Gaza - must be a total news blackout!)

I did not hear rush, but the govt. 'creating' jobs has never created a sustainable economic model to the best of my knowledge. If someone has an example, I'd truly like to hear it.

I don't think he's too concerned with a sustainable economic model. He's concerned with numbers.
And public statistics on unemployed. The US postal service system is one of those systems. The stamps tax rates keep increasing to balance the cost of the service.
It's been sustainable for years.

The Trans-Texas Corridor is D-E-A-D DEAD!

[Link: www.google.com...]

It was going to swallow up 1200 foot wide tracts of Texas, with rural underpasses every 20 miles (prolonging emergency response times), force the construction of many dams with lakes that would have swallowed up hundreds of thousands of acres of farm and ranch land, and funnel billions of taxpayer dollars to Spain.

To top it off, Texas wouldn't see a penny of the tolls from it for 30 years, as the same Spanish company would have had complete rights to it.

IDF shell kills 30 in Gaza UN school; Israel mulls appeal over Hamas fire from UN facilities

By Barak Ravid and Natasha Mozgavaya, Haaretz Correspondents and Haaretz Service

Tags: Hamas, Israel News, Gaza

Israel is considering submitting a complaint to the United Nations of Hamas' use of the world body's facilities for terror purposes, after 30 people were killed when an Israeli army artillery shell struck a UN school in Gaza. Israeli troops say that they were fired on from the building.

There were young Palis on their way to an anti-Israel rally and they were being hounded by black guys on the train.

One mentioned something about something Ludacris (spelling?) raps on one of his albums about "crazy Palestinians" or something.

The black guys started making fun of Arabs, and the youths answered, "We are not Arabs, we are Palestinians."

Well, I hope the Israeli Government is actually going to go ahead with this:
Israel may file complaint over Hamas' use of schools

From the report:
'The limited cabinet is examining the possibility of filing a complaint with the United Nations over the use of UNWRA schools made by Hamas gunmen in the Gaza Strip.
An inquiry into the incident revealed that the IDF soldiers acted according to procedures and fired back at gunmen firing mortar shells from the school. The investigation also revealed that Hamas launching cells were operating within the school. The shells landed outside the school yard.
IDF and intelligence sources said that Hamas was attempting to hide the circumstances of the incident. Members of the organization were also killed in the strike.'

UN employed staff are counting on special privileges and some get diplomatic immunity. The Israelis should revoke all of that and explicitly move to dismantle the UNRWA presence in both the West Bank and Gaza. There were some things that should have been done in 1967 that they have to do now
1) end the UNRWA regime
2) annex Bethlehem and remove all jihadists who moved in since '67, restoring it as a christian municipality.

Vicar takes down crucifixion sculpture
'because it's a scary

A vicar has removed a sculpture of the crucifixion from the front of his church because it was a 'horrifying depiction of pain and suffering' that was scaring off worshippers. Rev Ewen Souter said the traditional Christian symbol was frightening children and that it would be replaced with a modern, stainless steel cross. Some of the congregation have reacted angrily to the decision, saying it is another blow to Christian tradition. ...

African or European ?

It depends:

The African Green-Spotted Warbling Open Thread has a top speed of 50 kph. Though its plumage is often dusty, and it must range far to find enough to eat, it possesses a strong will to live that enables it to survive as well as a good instinct about what species prey on it and how avoid them.

The European Green-Spotted Warbling Open Thread once had a top speed of 60 kph but has now been rendered flightless by EU order. Constant exposure to toxic levels of Administranium have have eroded its survival instincts. It now feeds primarily on Government Cheese and is frequently eaten by its natural foes: the Islamist Vulture and Red Morlock. However, science has recent identified a new strain of this subspecies called the Wilderus strain that has regained the ability to fly at 40 kph and has forged a symbiotic relationship with the Green Scaled Lizardoid (GSL), a fierce but loyal creature known for its skill at hunting down Red Morlocks, whose Gamey Buttocks are its favorite food.

Does anyone know why Germany's highest award for military valor has the French legend "Pour le Merit" on it?

The Pour le Merit ended in Germay with the collapse of the Hohenzollern Dynasty which ended with WWI in 1918. It was replaced by the Iron Cross.

The French language was the international language of the 19th and 18th centuries and was included on many European national medals most of which were still ruled by imperial dynasties.

I'm an optimist that the truth will prevail.

I am as well...I think for Israel the time is ripe to shape a whole new paradigm in the ME...they should utterly destroy Hamas and occupy the entire strip...freeze out the UN and Fatah and the PA...start making some demands of their own to the UN, Egypt and Jordan...crank up their PR machine and try to stay ahead of Obama which doesnt seem that difficult at this point...Israel need to really start to rock here and steel themselves from all the phoney backlash from the Arab world the EU and the MSM...it can happen

Vicar takes down crucifixion sculpture
'because it's a scary
depiction of suffering'

A vicar has removed a sculpture of the crucifixion from the front of his church because it was a 'horrifying depiction of pain and suffering' that was scaring off worshippers. Rev Ewen Souter said the traditional Christian symbol was frightening children and that it would be replaced with a modern, stainless steel cross. Some of the congregation have reacted angrily to the decision, saying it is another blow to Christian tradition. ...

I get your point, but every show or movie has an element of the 'unbelievable' in it and 24 is no exception. For a long time, those unbelievable parts of 24 were part of the fun. For me, a show becomes unwatchable when the dialog gets to be too predictable, plain dumb, or contrived. The last season of 24 was just awful in that regard.

It covers the gamut, from threats, to psych-outs, to physical endangerment, to death. Things like pulling the trigger with an empty chamber, denial of bodily functions, sodomy, torturing a prisoner within sight or hearing of another prisoner, near-waterboarding and dunking, denial of food and water, force-feeding poisons.

The man who passed it to me (I photocopied it) said he had experienced some of these, but was denied political asylum in the USA. He immediately went underground, from one "safe house" to another. I heard about his presentation by word-of-mouth.

re: #385 Dark_Falcon

True Story: One time I was at Lincoln Park Zoo with my parents. I remarked on a early arriving Canada Goose (It was early March). A nearby person heard me and said to the goose "Go on back to Canada. Better health care." My father and I were so stunned by the ignorance and moonbattery of the statement that we were unable to respond to it.

Hello?

The goose clearly has AFLAC.

Head of Israel's Military Intelligence Maj. Gen. Amos Yadlin has reportedly said that Hizbullah might carry out a limited attack in northern Israel via a Palestinian group to avenge the Jewish state's military operation in the Gaza Strip.

I assumed that, but such is the usual reason for the overflights... reconnaissance of Hiz'b'allah activity... one of the reasons Hiz'b'allah wants Iranian surface-to-air missiles.

The loony Brits who have wholesale drunk the cool aid of global-warming catastrophe are now beginning to see the reality:

"BRITAIN’S Arctic start to 2009 showed no sign of abating yesterday as much of the UK was gripped by a mini ice-age. Temperatures in some parts of the country were predicted to plunge to a bone-chilling -10C [14°F] last night with the sub-zero temperatures set to last for much of the week. The winter of 1962-1963 was the coldest in England and Wales since 1740. But forecasters already predict this January chill could rival that. The freezing weather has called into question the notion of global warming." Daily Express

Email from the Jerusalem Prayer Team

From Mike Evans the founder of the Jerusalem Prayer Team

Dear (Silhouette),

I am writing you from the war zone in Southern Israel.

Yesterday, thousands of suffering Russian Jews in Sderot were given blankets and much more from you. God bless you for caring. Sderot has been in the direct line of fire from Hamas rockets for months. More than 10,000 missiles and mortars have been fired into Southern Israel by Hamas. Yes, that's correct...10,000. The secular media will not give you that information.

... Israelis in that area have learned to respond immediately to warning sirens that disrupt their daily activities over and over. In a matter of seconds, civilians must find shelter while hoping that the incoming rockets fail to hit a school, shopping mall, or a home.

Children in the area grow up with the fear that they could be the next target of Hamas' deadly intentions. Now, the Israelis face yet another challenge. Hamas has introduced the Grad Kaytusha rockets which have a longer range and can carry a deadlier payload. Ashkelon, a resort city on the Mediterranean, is now within the sights of Hamas missiles and has suffered death and destruction as a result. Defense Minister Ehud Barak decided on Sunday to extend the Hanukkah vacation in schools within a 20km range of the Gaza Strip until further notice.

...

Israelis in this area have suffered tremendously mentally, physically and emotionally. For example, terrorists blew up a school bus, and three precious children whose father is a rabbi, were all terribly wounded. Tehila, the eldest daughter, lost both legs in the attack. Thanks to the JPT, we were able to purchase a special motorized wheelchair to allow her to attend school and play with her friends.

...

Your ambassador to Jerusalem,
Michael D. Evans

Sheep Traffic Jam

There was this really smart sheep down in Mexico who knew how to make butter and buttermilk.

One night she sneaked across the border and got a job working for a farmer, who set up a roadside stand and told her to try to sell the stuff. Unfortunately traffic was very heavy and the sight of this sheep making butter and buttermilk was so distracting that naturally there was an accident.

The police investigated and issued the farmer a citation for attempting to make an illegal ewe churn on a busy highway.

It is a fraud because there is no reciprocity. The members of the designated protected category, such as homosexuals or believers in the divine but specially protected nature of Mohammed and his message, may not be criticized however they are themselves immune from sanction for acting in a manner which would be prohibited if done by anyone else. That is a textbook definition of hypocrisy.

2. Queen Pelosi rolls back all Congressional reforms to include censoring any and all input from the "other side" in the spirit of "bipartisanship." She removes all term limits on committee chairmanships and eliminates all measures put in place to provide transparency and enforce ethics.

3. NY Gov Patterson stands by his y'know, gal, y'know Sweet Caroline.

4. The O picks another Clintoon political hack to lead our most important agency (That would be "The Agency" to those in the know) in the GWOT, because y'know he can pick up all the spook know-how he needs on the job.

5. Comic relief in the form of Dingy Harry, Dick Turban, Blago (or is it Bluto?) and Burress amuse us with chills and spills. Oh, BTW, has anyone else noticed how the chief law enforcement officer of the state of Ill-noise got himself on the same career path as the One himself? Y'know, see no evil, hear no evil, say no evil while improbably rising to stardom in Chi-town. Perhaps he felt sorry for Fitzgerald and just wanted to leave all those dirty deals to him to bring to light to boost his self-esteem.

Q: Why do Scotsmen wear kilts?
A: Sheep can hear zippers.

A man walked into a bar...with an octopus.

The bar tender asked, "what's with the octopus?".

The man, noticing a number of musical instruments hanging on the wall, said "I'll bet you $500 that my octopus can play any instrument in the bar".

The bar tender, amused, said "Fine, let's hear him with this trumpet".

Immediately, the bar is filled with Dizzy Gillespie.

The bar tender, surprised, but still hopeful retrieved a saxophone from the wall and handed it to the octopus... followed shortly by "Yackety Sax".

The bar tender, now desperate, groped around beneath the bar for a few seconds and returned with a bagpipe. Handing it to the octopus, he declared proudly, "There's no way!".

Five minutes passed and not a sound was heard. The octopus seemed ill at ease with the new instrument.

Finally, the bar tender said "Ha! I want my $500!".

The man said confidently, "Just give him a second. As soon as he figures out he can't f**k it, he'll start playing".

Number Crunching

According to this article each Qassam rocket that the terrorists fire into Israel costs $500.

Bearing in mind that they are firing an average of say 50 a day, that means that $25,000 is being wasted each day on rockets.

Spread over the 8 years they've been firing, an astonishing $73 million has been wasted - even if you are an antisemitic leftist, there is still monumentally poor return on this cash for the amount of Jews these missiles have murdered.

How much relief aid could this $25,000 buy? I'd estimate about 25 grand's worth, which will go a long way to solving many of the problems of whole bunch of people.

$25,000 could, for example, buy a shitload of blankets
$25,000 could buy enough rice to feed a medium sized Palestinian family for ages - at least until they got sick of rice
$25,000 could buy nice secondhand Mercedes each day...as a sort of lucky dip for the beleaguered 'stinians. It would take their minds off stuff.

And they call us heartless

Not exactly, anyone can be impeached but it has never been done to a member of the legislature. In theory they could impeach a private citizen to prevent them from ever holding a position of profit or trust. In practice in America it has only been used for Judges and Presidents.

Two guys are walking through the woods and come across this big deep
hole.

"Wow...that looks deep."

"Sure does... toss a few pebbles in there and see how deep it is."

They pick up a few pebbles and throw them in and wait... no noise.

"Jeeez. That is REALLY deep... here.. throw one of these great big rocks
down there. Those should make a noise."

They pick up a couple football-sized rocks and toss them into the hole
and wait... and wait. Nothing.

They look at each other in amazement. One gets a determined look on his
face and says, "Hey...over here in the weeds, there's a
railroad tie. Help me carry it over here. When we toss THAT sucker in,
it's GOTTA make some noise."

The two men drag the heavy tie over to the hole and heave it in. Not a
sound comes from the hole.

Suddenly, out of the nearby woods, a sheep appears, running like the
wind. It rushes toward the two men, then right past them,
running as fast as it's legs will carry it. Suddenly it leaps in the air
and into the hole.

The two men are astonished with what they've just seen...
Then, out of the woods comes a farmer who spots the men and ambles over.

Hey... you two guys seen my sheep out here?

You bet we did! Craziest thing I ever seen! It came running like crazy
and just jumped into this hole!

Nah, says the farmer, That couldn't have been MY sheep. My sheep was
chained to a railroad tie.

The video Ecole Gaza ONU Petite piqure de rappelle. has the "October 29, 2007" intro. So, being that this is an open thread, I’ll be as off-topic as possible. On New Year’s Day, my 93-year-old father passed away. In itself, it wasn’t an unpleasant task for him; he suffered Alzheimer’s for a few years and physically was very frail and fragile. The pneumonia finally got the better of him, and in the end was painless.

Of course I’m saddened, but his passing isn’t about me, it’s more about him. He was such a talented, well-educated, broadly traveled, professional, and intelligent man who lived life large up until the Alzheimer’s kicked in. Only three of us original five children are still alive, and when the responsibility of his well being was thrust upon me a few years ago, I didn’t know how I’d manage it. But he and I worked it all out. I was always the rebellious child, confrontational and generally a pain. He was cantankerous, tyrannical as a father but with a sense of humor that never quit. I’ll miss him terribly.

So I’m writing all this as a tribute to “Pop” (not that he’ll ever read it, but I’m sure he knows). As difficult as it was caring for him, I’m so fortunate to have lived my 65 years and had the opportunity to build a new relationship with a man with whom I didn’t necessarily have a good one with decades ago. Past issues got blown away and even in his limited mental capability understood that he and I were a team.

So what I’d like to share is that we all need to make the most of the opportunities to build relationships with our loved ones while we can. Push the issues aside. Find new common ground upon which to relate. You may not have the time I have had to do all that.

So I’d like to share some of Pop’s thoughts that I learned from him over the decades, if you care to read on:

“I’m very much in touch with my own mortality and integrity; I can be deprived of my mortality, but will never abandon my integrity”.

“I’m fairly deaf at my age; I will not get hearing aids because I’m not sure that I’m going to hear anything new or profound that I haven’t already heard”.

“Don’t get too caught up in your issues of today; in 100 years little of it will matter”.

And my favorite (take it as you will): “The Almighty must truly love stupid people; he made so many of them”.

Thanks for letting Grandma ramble on in this unusually balmy, although damp Carolina evening, and have a nice day.

re: #575 grandma

My condolences as well. As I was reading, I thought about the way grown people continue to relate to their relatives in the same way they did as children. Be it their parents or siblings we often never break out of the patterns we had when we were young.

I caught myself being that way with my older brother and several years back made a conscious effort to change that through the way I responded to him. I dropped my defensiveness and laughed along when the jokes were at my expense, adding my own self-deprecating rejoinders. It didn't take long, and he and I see each other much more as equals and have grown closer since.

My sister is a different case. I don't think that she'll ever relate to our brother and our Mom any differently than when we were kids.

Grandma,

Blessings to you and your family.

MJBrutus,
I think you may be referring to our opportunity to learn detachment from the world, which includes the body, physical universe. God bless you too in your search. [Detachment not being the same as not caring, btw]
