Hitchens must by now realize that not only is there no such thing as a right to a state (ask the Kurds), but that even if there were, it is not “inalienable.” In fact, the Palestinians alienated it.
I have great fun, whenever I hear someone recycle the old trope that "... of course the Palestinians deserve their own state...", of simply asking: Why?
Usually stops 'em cold.

Lowering the Volume on Leaf Blowers
Registration Required
For years, noisy -- and pollution-spewing -- leaf blowers have served as a source of morning aggravation and have spawned endless quarrels among neighbors. I had an identical experience with someone I'd just met last month. She used the same word against me when I politely told her that no, I didn't think 9/11 was an "inside job." Later on, I found out that she also considers the U.S. to be identical to Nazi Germany, and has had herself photographed wiping her a** with an American flag.

This is a repost from last thread, but it's more approproate on this open thread:
I just found out that I'm one of the blogs in the "Weblog Awards" this year. But in my category ("Midsize Blog" -- how is that determined? Strange) is also Israel Matzav, by Carl in Jerusalem. Since I have so much admiration for Carl's blog, I refuse to campaign against him! And since he's currently blogging live from a country at war, I think he's a deserving candidate. So: vote for Israel Matzav in the Best Midsize Blog category, unless you really really insist on voting for zomblog anyway, which I suppose you can do if you want -- I can't stop you! But I'd feel guilty taking the award away from Carl, especially since I've won every previous year I've been nominated, and I don't need another award.
(Though, in earlier years, I won the "Best Photo Blog" category, but this year they changed the definition of the category and made it be blogs which focus on the technicalities of photography, rather than blogs which feature a lot of photographs.)
All the other blogs in that category have campaign link-buttons and pleas to vote, etc. I can't do that. "If nominated, I will not run. If elected, I will not serve!" (Trivia question: who said that originally?)

Well... a couple of days ago, while I was walking down the street in a big hurry, I was accosted by a girl of about 19 years old, who was carrying a clipboard. She asked me if I had a minute. I said, truthfully, that I was in a hurry and couldn't stop right then. Then she got pissy, and said "really, you can't spare ONE minute of your time to help end torture?" That's when I saw the Amnesty International logo on her clipboard.
I said "no thanks, I'm pro-torture," and kept walking.

Nope -- Kragar had it right: William Tecumseh Sherman.
Sherman had some great quotes:
Every attempt to make war easy and safe will result in humiliation and disaster.
I hate newspapermen. They come into camp and pick up their camp rumors and print them as facts. I regard them as spies, which, in truth, they are.
I make up my opinions from facts and reasoning, and not to suit any body but myself. If people don't like my opinions, it makes little difference as I don't solicit their opinions or votes.
If forced to choose between the penitentiary and the White House for four years, I would say the penitentiary, thank you.
