The funniest part was the "predictive sentences" that the software displays after the first few letters. "The aardvark wants to kill me"...etc.

Actually, the Onion's faux-interface and faux software display was extremely slick. I want to hire their humorists/graphics-technicians to design a real product!

No: real Apple products are indeed extremely ergonomic.

Recently I had the "opportunity" to use a Windows computer for a couple hours. Gaaaaaaaah! I wanted to commit suicide after the first 15 minutes. By the two-hour mark I was an emotional rag doll.

The only thing I know about Carmello Anthony is that he was busted for DWI right after he joined the Nuggets.

He publicly apologized (of course), but I got the feeling he was sincere. He hasn't been in trouble since.
He didn't mind shares minutes with the "high profile" players, and passes the ball off when it needs to be passed off.

He seems to be a decent guy and a team player. That says a lot about the modern sports figure.

There are also reports of Israel opening up a new front in the south of Gaza, near the Egyptian border, with eyewitness reports of Israeli tanks heading towards Khan Younis.

The Israeli military, which had warned of an overnight bombing campaign, confirmed that strikes were taking place in the Egyptian border city of Rafah.

Israel is trying to destroy hundreds of tunnels between Egypt and Gaza, which it says are being used to ferry weapons and rockets to Hamas fighters.

Israel is busy pounding the heck out of Rafah's tunnel complex. That's good.

What's bad is that Israel keeps warning Palestinians in the area that they're about to attack - lessening the chances that they're going to hit the terrorists responsible for operating the tunnels, hitting the weapons caches, and alerting Hamas to the possibility that they can set up a Qana or another school incident.

But without the warnings, civilian casualties would skyrocket and nonsensical world opinion would heat up like in '06. As long as they can keep the civilian casualties to a minimum or at least expose Hamas as directly responsible for said casualties, they can continue to weed them out and kill them. Nobody seems too hasty to have them stop killing Hamas members.

How many sides does it take to have a truce? Two. Yet, everyone is focusing on Israel and how it is supposedly agreeing in principle to the idea of a truce. Hamas hasn't even bothered stopping fire from its last hudna, let alone the 3 hour break in the action today, and couldn't bother responding to questions since they were in the middle of reloading for the next barrage of kassams against Israel.

Yet, Israel will be blamed when this latest diplomatic effort falls flat.

I understand that Israel is trying to play the diplomatic game by agreeing to a truce in principle if Hamas meets certain conditions (knowing full well that Hamas can't or wont). Yet, the media and the diplomats will ignore the good faith efforts and slam Israel regardless of the outcome.

Israel's only viable option is to defeat Hamas, and that means killing their leaders and destroying their weapons caches and the ability to resupply. The sooner the better, because Hamas has the media working overtime to get Israel to stop.

Things were so bad last year that a single Toyota model, the Camry/Solara midsize car, outsold the entire fleet of Chrysler LLC's passenger cars.

Speaking of Utah...

Legislature Considers Bill to Prohibit Restaurants From Displaying Alcohol in Front of Children

(KCPW News) While the hospitality industry is calling for Utah's liquor laws to be relaxed, some legislators are heading in just the opposite direction. Tomorrow, the Administrative Rules Committee will discuss a bill that would prohibit restaurants from mixing drinks within the view of minors. Senate President Michael Waddoups, who's a co-sponsor, says restaurants should be required to make layout changes to protect children, even though it may be costly.

"Of course it's a problem, but so is properly refrigerating food a problem for some people, so is making sure that people have had proper food handling permits and training a problem for some people. That doesn't mean it can't be done and it doesn't mean it's not a good thing. They may have to extend a sheetrock wall that may cost a couple hundred dollars, that is a small price to pay for the safety and the mental future of our children," Waddoups said.

Waddoups says the shiny bottles and the atmosphere a bar provides lure children subliminally to want to drink alcohol. He says bars that can be seen by children are advertising alcohol to minors.

Although Governor Jon Huntsman has been trying to relax alcohol laws to encourage tourism, Waddoups believes he would support the bill.

"Well, if we have a good debate and we decide what the majority of the state's citizens want based on our debate, I think the governor will sign most any bills that we pass. He is a third branch of the government, he can veto anything he wants, I don't think he's going to veto something that protects the health of our children," Waddoups said.

Waddoups says because children's brains are undeveloped are more susceptible to alcohol damage, they need to be protected. If the committee approves the bill, it will be voted on in the general session starting later this month.

Well, what we call even temperament is a relatively new thing. A 440 cycles is what we use now, but there was a time when A was 436 cycles or 438. These things change.

And sometimes even temperament itself sucks. It imposes a certain tyranny on the music.

Reminds me of the Tesla Oscillator. It's a device that Nicola Tesla invented, but I learned about it when they were investigating it on Mythbusters. The idea is that a series of small taps, if applied at exactly the resonant frequency of a large structure, can eventually induce such a powerful standing wave that the structure shakes apart. Tesla claims that nearly brought down his laboratory building with one, and that he was able to break a two-foot steel bar with taps that were so gentle that they "wouldn't harm a baby."

U.S. scientists learn how to levitate tiny objectsU.S. scientists have found a way to levitate the very smallest objects using the strange forces of quantum mechanics, and said on Wednesday they might use it to help make tiny nanotechnology machines.

They said they had detected and measured a force that comes into play at the molecular level using certain combinations of molecules that repel one another.
The repulsion can be used to hold molecules aloft, in essence levitating them, creating virtually friction-free parts for tiny devices, the researchers said.

Federico Capasso, an applied physicist at Harvard University in Massachusetts, whose study appears in the journal Nature, said he believed that detection of this force opened the possibility of a whole new class of tiny gadgets.

The team, including researchers at the National Institutes of Health, has not yet levitated an object, but Capasso said he now knows how to do it. "This is an experiment we are sure will work," he said. His team has already filed for patents.

It kind of remeinds me of the Thompson harmonizer...

Well, to summarize... they had some trouble building a prototype of the device that worked. They did manage to get some big deflections in a 20-foot steel bar. And the weirdest thing was that they attached a small motor to a large steel bridge, and they were able to induce oscillations strong enough that felt like a big truck was driving by. The oscillations could be felt even hundreds of feet away. Some interesting events, but they ruled the myth "busted," I think because they were never actually able to break the bar or make the bridge collapse.

Now I have to go google the Thompson Harmonizer.

Tacoma Narrows was wind induced. The bridge had solid sides, road deck and an open bottom. A long three sided box. As the wind blew by it swirled in the open bottom, creating a high pressure in the box. It would twist to dump the pressure in even mild breezes.

I need your help. The Kid has ADHD. Concrete fact. I broach no dispute.

I've tried to research GABA as an alternative treatment.

I am utterly confused.

Help?

The school tried to label my kid with ADHD last year (kindergarten) and the biginning of this year. We refused to let her be drugged and challenged the school. We agreed to let her be tested and it turns out she has some kind of hearing problem. She can hear fine but her brain cant comprehend what it's hearing from one ear. The other ear is fine. The teacher mover her to the other side of the room and now she's ahead of the class. They say she may get put in the gifted class next year.

You know Atlantis ends Friday, don't you?

Yes, and I should catch that. Still haven't seen the last 1/2 season of SG1 - I wonder if it is on Hulu or Fancast. (Got a new TV, so I can watch streaming video on a 26" Samsung; very nice.)

That's above my paygrade but maybe try some dietary changes....
GABA: Your Brain's Own Anti-Anxiety Medication

Foods That Increase GABA:

According to Dr. Braverman, the following foods are high in glutamic acid/glutamate (forms glutamine, precursor to GABA).

* Almonds, tree nuts
* Bananas
* Beef Liver
* Broccoli
* Brown Rice
* Halibut
* Lentils
* Oats, whole grain
* Oranges, citrus fruits
* Rice bran
* Spinach
* Walnuts
* Whole wheat, whole grains.

If nothing else it looks like a healthy diet. I'll post some of my Dal reciepes (curried lentils) one of these days. Very delicious.

My wife has taught early elementary for 20 years or so and says out of the 1000 kids or so she knew maybe 2 or 3 were likely ADHD. She did her Masters thesis on that subject. She'd be the first one to say that it is waaay overdiagnosed.

Mandy,
When did you get him tested? Don't do the drugs.
Both my daughters were diagnosed. Both have extremely high IQs. One did not do drugs and is now a doctor. The other one (said to be worse) took drugs for a while, she is a bartender. She also has the higher IQ.
LISTS, structure is the best way to deal with it. Different color highlighters. Main thing also is they need to be challenged. Daughter #1 was, daughter #2 also had asthma and was babied quite a bit and not challenged as much.
Main thing, is stay on top of things with your son. You may need to spend a lot more time with him until he learns to structure his own time.

re: #376 MandyManners

Sorry to hear that. There must have been some frustrating times for all concerned.

Do you have the name of the supplement that you're talking about? It must not be GABA itself. GABA is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, and it has been invoked in mechanistic explanations of ADHD. But you couldn't take GABA in a pill. It would never make it to the brain. Furthermore, the idea seems to be to try to interfere with GABA activity, not promote it. Some scientists have been investigating GABA receptor antagonists. There seems to be a good review in the medical journal Expert Opinion on Emerging Drugs, September 2007, volume 12, number 3, pages 423-34. Here is a link to the article, but they want you to pay $110 to download it. That would be crazy, as you could photocopy it for free if you can get yourself to some sort of university library or something.

But stepping back a little... are you totally convinced that it's really ADHD? Reputable child psychiatrists generally concur that only a very small percentage of kids diagnosed with ADHD really have ADHD. Are you sure that you've found a specialist whom you trust to make the diagnosis, and if so, do you have a doctor whom you trust to manage it? If so, have you considered and rejected the usual treatment with methylphenidate and/or some sort of behavioral modification therapy?

My apologies to my Apple-loving friends, but this vid captures the "typical" Apple customer to a tee. BTW, I have one Apple product, the IPod Nano. I like it OK, except for when I want to turn it off, and it gets a bug up it's arse and refuses to. Until I...REBOOT IT. Ironic that an Apple product would ever have an issue that gets corrected like that.

Hamas seeking to mazimize civilian casualties

Rather than stand and fight against the Middle East's strongest army, the Islamist movement opted for a tactical withdrawal, with its fighters melting away into the strip's sprawling cities and refugee camps, according to Gaza residents and Israeli military analysts and officers.

Now, Hamas appears to be daring the Israeli troops to follow.

"They're hitting here and there with antitank missiles and mortars. Overall, though, they're not confronting the Israeli presence in Gaza," said retired Gen. Amnon Lipkin-Shahak, former chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces. "They're challenging the Israeli military to enter the built-up areas."

re: #162 CommonCents

But without the warnings, civilian casualties would skyrocket and nonsensical world opinion would heat up like in '06. As long as they can keep the civilian casualties to a minimum or at least expose Hamas as directly responsible for said casualties, they can continue to weed them out and kill them. Nobody seems too hasty to have them stop killing Hamas members.

I'm tired of WORLD OPINION. Where was World Opinion back in 1939?
Even when everbody got into the war, countries like the US and Canada and dozens of other refused Jews entry. So screw World Opinion.
