The funniest part was the "predictive sentences" that the software displays after the first few letters. "The aardvark wants to kill me"...etc.

Actually, the Onion's faux-interface and faux software display was extremely slick. I want to hire their humorists/graphics-technicians to design a real product!

The only thing I know about Carmello Anthony is that he was busted for DWI right after he joined the Nuggets.

He publicly apologized (of course), but I got the feeling he was sincere. He hasn't been in trouble since.
He didn't mind shares minutes with the "high profile" players, and passes the ball off when it needs to be passed off.

He seems to be a decent guy and a team player. That says a lot about the modern sports figure.

There are also reports of Israel opening up a new front in the south of Gaza, near the Egyptian border, with eyewitness reports of Israeli tanks heading towards Khan Younis.

The Israeli military, which had warned of an overnight bombing campaign, confirmed that strikes were taking place in the Egyptian border city of Rafah.

Israel is trying to destroy hundreds of tunnels between Egypt and Gaza, which it says are being used to ferry weapons and rockets to Hamas fighters.

Israel is busy pounding the heck out of Rafah's tunnel complex. That's good.

What's bad is that Israel keeps warning Palestinians in the area that they're about to attack - lessening the chances that they're going to hit the terrorists responsible for operating the tunnels, hitting the weapons caches, and alerting Hamas to the possibility that they can set up a Qana or another school incident.

But without the warnings, civilian casualties would skyrocket and nonsensical world opinion would heat up like in '06. As long as they can keep the civilian casualties to a minimum or at least expose Hamas as directly responsible for said casualties, they can continue to weed them out and kill them. Nobody seems too hasty to have them stop killing Hamas members.

How many sides does it take to have a truce? Two. Yet, everyone is focusing on Israel and how it is supposedly agreeing in principle to the idea of a truce. Hamas hasn't even bothered stopping fire from its last hudna, let alone the 3 hour break in the action today, and couldn't bother responding to questions since they were in the middle of reloading for the next barrage of kassams against Israel.

Yet, Israel will be blamed when this latest diplomatic effort falls flat.

I understand that Israel is trying to play the diplomatic game by agreeing to a truce in principle if Hamas meets certain conditions (knowing full well that Hamas can't or wont). Yet, the media and the diplomats will ignore the good faith efforts and slam Israel regardless of the outcome.

Israel's only viable option is to defeat Hamas, and that means killing their leaders and destroying their weapons caches and the ability to resupply. The sooner the better, because Hamas has the media working overtime to get Israel to stop.

Things were so bad last year that a single Toyota model, the Camry/Solara midsize car, outsold the entire fleet of Chrysler LLC's passenger cars.

Speaking of Utah...

Legislature Considers Bill to Prohibit Restaurants From Displaying Alcohol in Front of Children

(KCPW News) While the hospitality industry is calling for Utah's liquor laws to be relaxed, some legislators are heading in just the opposite direction. Tomorrow, the Administrative Rules Committee will discuss a bill that would prohibit restaurants from mixing drinks within the view of minors. Senate President Michael Waddoups, who's a co-sponsor, says restaurants should be required to make layout changes to protect children, even though it may be costly.

"Of course it's a problem, but so is properly refrigerating food a problem for some people, so is making sure that people have had proper food handling permits and training a problem for some people. That doesn't mean it can't be done and it doesn't mean it's not a good thing. They may have to extend a sheetrock wall that may cost a couple hundred dollars, that is a small price to pay for the safety and the mental future of our children," Waddoups said.

Waddoups says the shiny bottles and the atmosphere a bar provides lure children subliminally to want to drink alcohol. He says bars that can be seen by children are advertising alcohol to minors.

Although Governor Jon Huntsman has been trying to relax alcohol laws to encourage tourism, Waddoups believes he would support the bill.

"Well, if we have a good debate and we decide what the majority of the state's citizens want based on our debate, I think the governor will sign most any bills that we pass. He is a third branch of the government, he can veto anything he wants, I don't think he's going to veto something that protects the health of our children," Waddoups said.

Waddoups says because children's brains are undeveloped are more susceptible to alcohol damage, they need to be protected. If the committee approves the bill, it will be voted on in the general session starting later this month.

Well, what we call even temperament is a relatively new thing. A 440 cycles is what we use now, but there was a time when A was 436 cycles or 438. These things change.

And sometimes even temperament itself sucks. It imposes a certain tyranny on the music.

Reminds me of the Tesla Oscillator. It's a device that Nicola Tesla invented, but I learned about it when they were investigating it on Mythbusters. The idea is that a series of small taps, if applied at exactly the resonant frequency of a large structure, can eventually induce such a powerful standing wave that the structure shakes apart. Tesla claims that nearly brought down his laboratory building with one, and that he was able to break a two-foot steel bar with taps that were so gentle that they "wouldn't harm a baby."

U.S. scientists learn how to levitate tiny objectsU.S. scientists have found a way to levitate the very smallest objects using the strange forces of quantum mechanics, and said on Wednesday they might use it to help make tiny nanotechnology machines.

They said they had detected and measured a force that comes into play at the molecular level using certain combinations of molecules that repel one another.
The repulsion can be used to hold molecules aloft, in essence levitating them, creating virtually friction-free parts for tiny devices, the researchers said.

Federico Capasso, an applied physicist at Harvard University in Massachusetts, whose study appears in the journal Nature, said he believed that detection of this force opened the possibility of a whole new class of tiny gadgets.

The team, including researchers at the National Institutes of Health, has not yet levitated an object, but Capasso said he now knows how to do it. "This is an experiment we are sure will work," he said. His team has already filed for patents.

It kind of remeinds me of the Thompson harmonizer...

Well, to summarize... they had some trouble building a prototype of the device that worked. They did manage to get some big deflections in a 20-foot steel bar. And the weirdest thing was that they attached a small motor to a large steel bridge, and they were able to induce oscillations strong enough that felt like a big truck was driving by. The oscillations could be felt even hundreds of feet away. Some interesting events, but they ruled the myth "busted," I think because they were never actually able to break the bar or make the bridge collapse.

Now I have to go google the Thompson Harmonizer.

Tacoma Narrows was wind induced. The bridge had solid sides, road deck and an open bottom. A long three sided box. As the wind blew by it swirled in the open bottom, creating a high pressure in the box. It would twist to dump the pressure in even mild breezes.

I need your help. The Kid has ADHD. Concrete fact. I broach no dispute.

I've tried to research GABA as an alternative treatment.

I am utterly confused.

Help?

The school tried to label my kid with ADHD last year (kindergarten) and the biginning of this year. We refused to let her be drugged and challenged the school. We agreed to let her be tested and it turns out she has some kind of hearing problem. She can hear fine but her brain cant comprehend what it's hearing from one ear. The other ear is fine. The teacher mover her to the other side of the room and now she's ahead of the class. They say she may get put in the gifted class next year.

That's above my paygrade but maybe try some dietary changes...
GABA: Your Brain's Own Anti-Anxiety Medication

Foods That Increase GABA:

According to Dr. Braverman, the following foods are high in glutamic acid/glutamate (forms glutamine, precursor to GABA).

* Almonds, tree nuts
* Bananas
* Beef Liver
* Broccoli
* Brown Rice
* Halibut
* Lentils
* Oats, whole grain
* Oranges, citrus fruits
* Rice bran
* Spinach
* Walnuts
* Whole wheat, whole grains.

If nothing else it looks like a healthy diet. I'll post some of my Dal reciepes (curried lentils) one of these days. Very delicious.

Mandy,
When did you get him tested? Don't do the drugs.
Both my daughters were diagnosed. Both have extremely high IQs. One did not do drugs and is now a doctor. The other one (said to be worse) took drugs for a while, she is a bartender. She also has the higher IQ.
LISTS, structure is the best way to deal with it. Different color highlighters. Main thing also is they need to be challenged. Daughter #1 was, daughter #2 also had asthma and was babied quite a bit and not challenged as much.
Main thing, is stay on top of things with your son. You may need to spend a lot more time with him until he learns to structure his own time.

re: #376 MandyManners

Sorry to hear that. There must have been some frustrating times for all concerned.

Do you have the name of the supplement that you're talking about? It must not be GABA itself. GABA is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, and it has been invoked in mechanistic explanations of ADHD. But you couldn't take GABA in a pill. It would never make it to the brain. Furthermore, the idea seems to be to try to interfere with GABA activity, not promote it. Some scientists have been investigating GABA receptor antagonists. There seems to be a good review in the medical journal Expert Opinion on Emerging Drugs, September 2007, volume 12, number 3, pages 423-34. Here is a link to the article, but they want you to pay $110 to download it. That would be crazy, as you could photocopy it for free if you can get yourself to some sort of university library or something.

But stepping back a little... are you totally convinced that it's really ADHD? Reputable child psychiatrists generally concur that only a very small percentage of kids diagnosed with ADHD really have ADHD. Are you sure that you've found a specialist whom you trust to make the diagnosis, and if so, do you have a doctor whom you trust to manage it? If so, have you considered and rejected the usual treatment with methylphenidate and/or some sort of behavioral modification therapy?

Hamas seeking to mazimize civilian casualties

Rather than stand and fight against the Middle East's strongest army, the Islamist movement opted for a tactical withdrawal, with its fighters melting away into the strip's sprawling cities and refugee camps, according to Gaza residents and Israeli military analysts and officers.

Now, Hamas appears to be daring the Israeli troops to follow.

"They're hitting here and there with antitank missiles and mortars. Overall, though, they're not confronting the Israeli presence in Gaza," said retired Gen. Amnon Lipkin-Shahak, former chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces. "They're challenging the Israeli military to enter the built-up areas."

I'm tired of WORLD OPINION. Where was World Opinion back in 1939?
Even when everbody got into the war, countries like the US and Canada and dozens of other refused Jews entry. So screw World Opinion.

Wherever there is war there is propaganda. Here on the streets of New York there has been a struggle for the hearts and minds of New Yorkers. Many pro-Israeli demonstrations have been held over the last few days, but on Wednesday night there was something different -- a pro-Palestinian demonstration. Both sides see this as a simple struggle when it is anything but.

And it does indeed set the battle map correctly: Since Israel invaded Gaza,there have been no rocket or mortar attacks on Israel. And the IDF seems to be holding the unoccupied land from where the rockets were fired and has encircled the largest cities in Gaza.
It's a conundrum, though - If the IDF does mount an attack on Hamas in the urban areas I think there will be a LOT of Israeli casualties and a lot of Hamas and even more "innocent" "Palestinian" causalties.
Maybe the IDF can continue holding the vacant land and when Hamas comes out to fire those rockets from within mostly civilian areas, then blow them up - using drones with Hellfires, Helicopter gunships and fighter bomber's all of which would be equipped (and I believe already are) with night vision devices.
Hamas may be able to get some rockets fired at Israel, but I think this sort of combination of war of attrition and "siege" by Israel could produce victory. IF nothing else it will show the population what cowards the Hamas leaders and "fighters" really are and thus greatly weaken their political base in Gaza.

re: #400 Killgore Trout

Me, I could probably use some more GABA in my brain. And I definitely would like to try the dal recipe.

But for ADHD, what you theoretically would want is less GABA, not more. The drug that's most often used for ADHD, methylphenidate, is a sympathomimetic -- in other words, it sort of does the opposite of what GABA does. The drugs that facilitate GABA activity in one way or another include benzodiazepines (like Valium and Xanax), barbiturates, and Ambien -- obviously very different from amphetamines, which are what work for ADHD. And the GABA-related drugs that are being investigated for ADHD are GABA blockers.

I'd also be very suspicious of anyone's claim that eating foods with more glutamate would calm you down by causing you to make more GABA. Glutamate itself, in its unmodified form, is a strong excitatory neurotransmitter.

Israel's only viable option is to defeat Hamas, and that means killing their leaders and destroying their weapons caches and the ability to resupply. The sooner the better, because Hamas has the media working overtime to get Israel to stop.

Israel will be vilified no matter what they do, but if it were me:

1) secure the open terrain and set up processing stations. All UN supplies and food will be held there under UN control, not Hamas.

2) blanket transmit, leaflet drop, etc, news that these neighborhoods will be subject to bomardment and invasion. All wishing to leave must do so thru a IDF processing station. Start with a small area already mostly cleared to minimize casualties from those who doubt the IDF.

3) At the designated time, level the designated area. Raze it to the ground. Send in ground troops to secure the area, blast tunnels, etc and turn it into the next processing station.

Repeat as needed.

CIA tracking 4000 UK terror suspects

THE CIA has begun an unprecedented intelligence-gathering operation in Britain to help MI5 monitor 4000 terrorist suspects.

More than four out of 10 CIA operations to prevent attacks on US soil are now conducted against targets in Britain.

This has led to friction between British and American spies, with some US intelligence officers irritated that resources are being diverted to gather intelligence on suspects in their closest ally's backyard. British intelligence officers do not know the identity of all the CIA informers and are uneasy about some of the uses to which the intelligence has been put.

MI5 as a whole is glad of the help, however, and works closely with its sister service. US spies share information when it concerns security in Britain.

Intelligence from CIA informers is believed to have helped thwart more than one terrorist atrocity on British soil. Information passed on by a CIA source in Britain was also instrumental in locating Rashid Rauf, a British-born al-Qaeda operative killed by a US air strike in Pakistan on November 22.

A British official said: "There is a great deal of CIA activity inside the UK. The CIA has been given a free rein to raise, handle and process from intelligence sources inside the UK.

"In many cases we do not know who their assets are. Several of the recently foiled terrorist plots inside the UK were uncovered by informants run by US source handlers. We've been able to interdict these plots."

A former CIA officer who still carries out freelance work for the agency voiced the irritation of some American spies. "It's certainly frustrating that Britain is an Islamist swamp," he said. "You don't want to have to spend time spying on your friends."

Do not call ahead.

I think that is digusting and immoral, more so than dropping a bomb without warning, which is violent - but traditional, and clear, and guaranteed effective since it depends in no way on the proper understanding of the targets.

I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation. War is hell.

When dealing with Southern civilains, he had this to say:

my dear sirs, when peace does come, you may call on me for any thing. Then will I share with you the last cracker, and watch with you to shield your homes and families against danger from every quarter.

New twist in mosque row

Controversial plans for an £18 million mosque were today set to be scuppered after a Black Country council launched a legal move to reclaim the land.

Dudley Muslim Association had won permission on appeal to build the mosque on land in the town’s Hall Street.

But under the terms of Dudley Council’s deal with the association, the development had to be “substantially built” by the start of this month. No brick has yet been laid and a detailed planning application not submitted.

Council leader Councillor David Caunt today confirmed wheels are in motion for the council to reclaim the land. “The agreement said ‘substantially built by the end of the year’ and they haven’t even got a detailed planning application in yet,” he said.

The old men are all dead. It is the young men who say yes or no. He who led on the young men is dead. It is cold, and we have no blankets; the little children are freezing to death. My people, some of them, have run away to the hills, and have no blankets, no food. No one knows where they are—perhaps freezing to death. I want to have time to look for my children, and see how many of them I can find. Maybe I shall find them among the dead. Hear me, my chiefs! I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever."

And secondly, I'm not sure that would work the the Gazans - I truly do believe that they (not just Hamas) want to destroy Israel and every Israeli and Jew that they can and I don't think that even if Israel savagely beat them around that their belief in the destruction of Israel would ever change. I think Israel DOES need to effect Regime Change, but to whom? Fatah? No fucking way. I think taking Hamas out the way you suggested MIGHT keep world opinion at bay and show the Pali's that Hamas isn't the answer. More than that I think is wishful thinking.

Israel needs to learn to disregard international opinion for a change. Israel has been smeared as a genocidal and racist country that has developed one of the worst humanitarian crises in history...yet in reality Israel is by far the most moral, responsible, and humanitarian countries in the world. Civilians have died in this conflict, yes, but no one else in the world can come as close to Israels ratio...its absolutely stunning how Israel manages to kill far more terrorists than civilians when they have to shoot enormous bombs into mosques and hospitals and schools.

Not to mention the fact that throughout its history (Jenin being the best example) Israel has literally done everything possibly to avoid civilian casualties - even putting its own soldiers at risk to achieve that goal.

Thanks to both of you for the quick response...quiz tomorrow...exponents scare the hell out of me.

I remember a story about Solomon Golomb in college. Before he got to college, he had memorized all the answers of the form XY up to 1010 (So, he could give you the answer to say, 57 or 95 without hesitation).

During a college biology class, his teacher mentioned that human DNA had 24 chromosones (as was then believed - it's actually 23), so the number of possible combinations was 224, and joked that "everybody knows how many that is!"

Golomb immediately stated, "Of course! It's 16,777,216!" The teacher thought Golomb was trying to be funny, and did the problem on a calculator. He was stunned we he found out that 224 actually does equal 16,777,216!

If he only knew XY up to 1010, how did he know the answer? Initially, he didn't. But when he realized that 224 equals 88, which he did know, the answer came right to him.

Agreed. The problem with the Palestinians is that they have never suffered, I mean really suffered, from a defeat. The rest of the world steps in to protect them, giving them the illusion that next time, they can pull it off. The Palis must be shown that if Israel wished it, it could crush them to dust and none of them would remain. Only once they have been broken to the point they realize fighting is useless can a peace even be considered.

The Germans, Italians and Japanese finally got it. Just a few examples. The Romans have a few more.

As far as beating the Palestinians to the point where they have no desire to fight anymore...that's a wrong assessment. The Arabs realized a long time ago they could not defeat Israel militarily - that's when the Arab world initiated the so-called "Phased Plan" which sought the ultimate destruction of Israel over a period of time...that plan included changing their volatile rhetoric of calling for Israels destruction (Mahmoud didn't get the memo) like Nasser and other Arab leaders did all the time, and instead start exploiting the Palestinians and swaying international sympathy towards their "cause."

This is significant, because as a result of the plan, Israel is no longer seen as the "underdog" but the Palestinians are, as the Arabs effectively propagandized the whole situation.

But Israel isn't razing areas they're targeting houses and such. Very different.

I'll agree there might be some scenario where, if they do want to clear a large area, they give some warning, but the shorter, the better.

My point was they should be razing entire neighborhoods. Announce that in 24 hours, every structure between streets 1-3 by road A-C will be destroyed. Evacuate civilians thru controlled points. After the 24 hours, level it and send in troops to dig out remaining militants. After its cleared, announce streets 4-6 by road D-F will receive the same treatment.

Give civilians every chance to leave the zone, then crush it utterly and make a graphic example of it

Sure: Some guy you probably never heard of, unless you're into puzzles, solved a seemingly impossible problem in his head that was mentioned by his college biology teacher. The question was "What is 2 multiplied by itself 24 times?" When he realized he happened to know the answer to an equivalent problem, "What is 8 multipled by itself 8 times?" He was able to astound everyone and give the answer immediately!

Why?
224=23*8

Since 23=8, that means that 23*8=88.

Or, if you really want to see it visually:

224=2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2=(2*2*2)*(2*2*2)*(2*2*2)*(2*2*2)*(2*2*2)*(2*2*2)*(2*2*2)*(2*2*2)=8*8*8*8*8*8*8*8=88

When you've got an unconvential force dug in and boobytrapping an urban environment which you have to engage, you have 2 choices:

1) engage in close quarters urban fighting, the most dangerous types of battlefield known to man.

2) remove the urban environment, booby traps and dug in defenders thru sustained artillery and air strikes. Minimizes risk to your own troops.

Rocket barrage hits northern Israel

A Katyusha barrage was fired at the Nahariya area in the Western Galilee Thursday morning. Police sappers received reports of three rocket hits.

Two people were wounded in the attack.

The police ordered residents to remain close to fortified areas. The school day in the city has been cancelled.

UN peacekeepers and Lebanese troops have stepped up patrols along the border with Israel about two weeks ago after rockets were discovered aimed at Israel and ready to fire.

The UN Interim Force in Lebanon and the Lebanese army "have deployed additional troops and intensified patrols and security control of the area," said UNIFIL spokeswoman Yasmina Bouziane.

UNIFIL commander Major General Claudio Graziano of Italy, is in contact with senior Lebanese and Israeli military officials, Bouziane added.

The patrols were boosted after security forces found eight Katyusha rockets in the coastal region between Naqura and Tair Harfa.

The rockets were "aimed at Palestine (Israel) and connected to a timer," an officer said, adding that an investigation was under way and that the rockets had been dismantled.

The traditional answer is to demand the surrender of the wanted persons, lay seige to the town, starve everyone down. Much more humane than burning it all down, right?

The thing is, everyone in Israel knew this going in, so why did they go in? The only answer is, because they could, and maybe to try out systems improved since Lebanon. There was never the least chance the ground invasion would be successful in any conventional terms.

Ha! I don't "get" - "Archie's Chair" - guess I will have to ask a docent for an explanation next time I get to the Smithsonian.

Or maybe here? If it's not to boring to those who know.

Basically, it's an essential prop from the popular TV show. The lead character, Archie, had his favorite comfortable chair. He became very upset when anybody else sat in it without his permission.

When Sammy Davis, Jr., did a guest appearance on the show as himself, he was one of the few people to ever sit in that chair with Archie's permission.

One thing you have to understand about the show is that "Archie" was portrayed as an old-fashioned bigot, who preferred things the way they were in the old days. He was forever being tripped up by his wife, Edith, who just didn't care about current events, or his daughter, Gloria, and her husband, who were caricatures of liberal democrats.

In the most remembered episode, Sammy Davis, Jr. rides in Archie's cab, leaves his briefcase behind, and comes to Archie's house to pick it up. When he arrives, poor Archie is torn between his bigoted ways (especially considering that Sammy Davis, Jr. was black, Jewish, Puerto Rican, and had a glass eye) and his respect for the man.

If you ever wonder what anybody means when they refer to "The Kiss" from All In the Family, here's what they're talking about:

A problem with that is how to tell who is a civilian.

I can't imagine that the IDF has such great intel that they know the face of every single supporter of Hamas in Gaza. And they don't wear uniforms. So many could just leave and say they were civilians. And live to fight another day.

I suppose if the Hamas fighters all left the area without their weapons, that would be something.

A page from the USMC in Iraq would be helpful and I believe is being followed to some extent.

2d Battle of Fallujah

Before beginning their attack, U.S. and Iraqi forces had established checkpoints around the city to prevent anyone from entering the city and intercept insurgents attempting to flee.

In addition, overhead imagery was used to prepare maps of the city for use by the attackers. American units were augmented with Iraqi translators to assist them in the planned fight. After weeks of withstanding air strikes and artillery bombardment, the militants holed up in the city appeared somewhat vulnerable to a direct attack, and the U.S. Military was ready to finish the job they had been forced to abort the prior spring.

I simply believe this method can be used to process civilians out of an area and use the artillery and air strikes as the main attack, using mechanized infantry to secure the zone afterwards, rather than limited bombardment and using infantry as the main assault.

True. Intel will be able to identify some fighters, but some may escape. In the meantime, they will be under Israeli "protection" in a refugee camp, unarmed and surrounded by IDF. With IDF protection and direct access to UN relief supplies, some Palis may be more willing to ID militants and the IDF could build off of that.

Because the world complained every time Israel closed the borders, which is one way to starve everyone down.
Despite the closures, Hamas seemed to be able to get weapons.

Yah, but Israel was never trying to starve everyone, just irritate them. Israel could have closed down water and power the day Hamas took power. Probably should have. That they didn't, probably falls under "keep your enemies closer". No easy answers.

You can fight your war or the enemies war. By allowing the Arabs to dictate the war as a fight for Pali freedom, Israel has been fighting the enemies war. They need to fight it on their terms with their conditions for victory and damn the world.

I completely agree as far as Israeli fighting by their own terms. I was simply replying to your comment that what Israel needs to do is simply beat the Palestinians so badly that they'll stop wanting to attack Israel - which I disagreed with. The only way for Israel to achieve peace is to kick out all of the Palestinians and Israeli Arabs to surrounding lands, and build 30 foot high double steel walls around its entire border.

Until then, Israel can keep doing whatever it wants - but there will never be peace.

Dont let Hamas near the supplies. Set up areas inside Gaza for civilians to get any supplies they need, then stay there until the IDF decides its safe for them to leave. UN wants the supplies to get to the Pali civilians, then get the Pali civilians to the supplies.

WASHINGTON – Pointing with concern to "red ink as far as the eye can see," President-elect Barack Obama pledged Wednesday to tackle out-of-control Social Security and Medicare spending and named a special watchdog to clamp down on other federal programs — even as he campaigned anew to spend the largest pile of taxpayer money in history to revive the sinking economy.

[SNIP]

He said Wednesday, without details, that his initial budget proposal next month will include "some very specific outlines" of how he plans to tackle spending. That extends to the ballooning and so-far unsolvable fiscal problem presented by the Social Security and Medicare programs, which Obama promised would be "a central part" of his deficit-reduction plan.

[SNIP]
"We committed to changing the way our government in Washington does business so that we're no longer squandering billions of tax dollars on programs that have outlived their usefulness or exist solely because of the power of a lobbyist or an interest group," Obama said.

About those UNFIL troops preventing Hizballah from rearming;

Nasrallah says Hizbullah ready to fight Israel

Hizbullah is prepared for any Israeli aggression, the organization's chief Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah said in a speech Wednesday.

"For several weeks now, even before the aggression (in Gaza) began, and also later, we have been hearing threats. One says they'll destroy us within days, others say that within hours… and I say: We are not afraid of your planes or your threats we and are ready for any scenario.

"If they come to our houses, our villages and our neighborhoods, the Zionists will find out that their war in July (the Second Lebanon War) was a walk in the park compared to what we have in store for them now."

Report: Lebanese army boosts troops along Israel border

The Lebanese army and UNIFIL have significantly increased their security arrangement in southern Lebanon since Israel has launched Operation Cast Lead, Syrian newspaper al-Watan reported Monday.

As part of this increased alert status, the Lebanese army and UNIFIL will carry out patrols on armored personnel carriers along the border.

Force Commander Major-General Claudio Graziano called on Lebanon to exercise constraint within its territory in order "not to give Israel an excuse to attack Lebanon."

Too late.

when I lived there we called Oakland Nagazaki by the bay
for a few years after the big fire in 1991
because the hills looked like a nuclear bomb went off

anything below Macarthur was and still is affectionately referred to as the war zone

E14th Street is where the new cops get trained
anyone who survives training down there has some serious abilities to deal with trouble because even "Cops" will not film in Oakland as it is too volatile

but Oakland has the unique distinction of being the only major city to NOT have Rodney King riots

because there are so many armed youths in gangs indiscriminately shooting at one another that everyone was so sensitive to rioting that there was a sort of stalemate and I believe ZERO murders for something like 18 straight days, a record !

then it devolved into it's usual self
but remember Oakland is home to:
Black Panther Party founding
Symbionese Liberation Army founding

In my link in comment #633 above, note this sentence near the very end:

"The core group of protesters was about 40 people, several of whom were with Revolution Books, a Berkeley bookstore. A man distributing "The Revolution" newspaper shouted "This whole damn system is guilty!"

Revolution Books is owned and run by the Revolutionary Communist Party, the Bob Avakian Maoist cult, and is the parent organization of World Can't Wait.

The World can wait but these people lack the self control to wait two weeks before their Potemkin Candidate is inaugurated. They are attempting to create 'facts on the ground'.

Zombie, I was born in Oakland and only escaped a few years ago. Moved mom up here a while after so all my family is safe but I worry about friends. Do tell what is happening please.
Are you going to post anything on zombietime ?

All I know is what I saw on TV and read in various articles and saw on videos. The short version:

There was an out-of-control mass fist-fight/rumble on a BART train the other day. BART cops responded and dragged the fighters onto the platform. Somehow (not yet determined), one of the BART cops (who was white) shot and killed one of the fighters (who was black). I heard a detail that indicated it was accidental -- the bullet only struck the victim after ricocheting off the ground, even though fired from only a couple feet away, which means it was not pointed at the victim when discharged. Nonetheless, the cop is already being blamed and pilloried for intentionally murdering the black guy simply because he was black. Every race-baiter and left-wing radical group immediately came out of the woodwork, and the media has played the incident up to the hilt. Today, ANSWER and World Can't Wait staged a protest at Fruitvale BART against the cop (who resigned today), and after they marched to Lake Merritt Station, the protest got out of hand and degenerated into a riot. For several hours tonight, between about 6pm and 10pm, in a corridor through Chinatown and downtown Oakland, cars were torched, windows were smashed, there was some looting, passersby were threatened, etc. Cops dispersed the crowd at 14th and Broadway, but the rioters continued rampaging in a more disorganized way, mostly along 14th Street apparently.

More "protests" scheduled for tomorrow.

Meanwhile, at the DA's office today, another group, including some Nation of islam members and various far-left radical organizations, "demanded answers," but didn't get to lynch the cop as they wanted. No violence at that scene, though, as far as I could tell.

And no, I'm not going to post anything on zombietime. I stay far far away from Bay Area racial politics.

Jesus Christ, guys. What the Hell does Obama think he's doing - besides showing open contempt for the troops?

Most of the proposed changes are in a report from the current administration and most of the ones from Obama are in case veterans will get national health care if it passes. The current administration recommends increasing co-pays for drugs to $22-$24. increasing the charge for non poor vets with non service related medical issues and the like. The most important thing to remember is both the GW and Obama proposals have benefits and down sides and they are just idea's being floated, nothing like bill.

758 Throbert McGee  Thu, Jan 8, 2009 8:51:09am

After insisting for all these years that a Walkman with mix CDs was "good enough," I finally got an iPod (the "Classic") for Christma. In fact, it was a bit belated -- it only arrived on Tuesday -- but I'm already wondering how I ever lived without it, of course. (Only minor disappointment: despite its huge capacity, it won't display text files larger than 4KB each, which excludes using it as an e-book reader -- since breaking up a 100KB text file into 25 smaller files just so I can read it on the iPod seems far more trouble than it's worth.)

The only thing is that I'm pretty stodgy in my musical tastes and I suspect that my entire CD and MP3 collection, once transferred, will barely fill it to the 2GB mark, out of 80GB. And thus far I've never bothered learning how to rip DVDs (since I don't have a DVD burner anyway), so my digital video collection consists only of short downloaded clips... I doubt if there's as much as 500MB worth in total.
