Once upon a sunny morning a man who sat in a breakfast nook looked up from his scrambled eggs to see a white unicorn with a golden horn quietly cropping the roses in the garden. The man went up to the bedroom where his wife was still asleep and woke her. “There’s a unicorn in the garden,” he said. “Eating roses.” She opened one unfriendly eye and looked at him. “The unicorn is a mythical beast,” she said, and turned her back on him. The man walked slowly downstairs and out into the garden. The unicorn was still there; he was now browsing among the tulips.

An abbey was in financial difficulties, and to increase its income the brothers decide to open a fish and chips business.

One day the abbey door bell rang and one of the brothers went to welcome a customer.

When he opened the door the customer said, "Are you the fish fryer?"

WASHINGTON – Pointing with concern to "red ink as far as the eye can see," President-elect Barack Obama pledged Wednesday to tackle out-of-control Social Security and Medicare spending and named a special watchdog to clamp down on other federal programs — even as he campaigned anew to spend the largest pile of taxpayer money in history to revive the sinking economy.

[SNIP]

He said Wednesday, without details, that his initial budget proposal next month will include "some very specific outlines" of how he plans to tackle spending. That extends to the ballooning and so-far unsolvable fiscal problem presented by the Social Security and Medicare programs, which Obama promised would be "a central part" of his deficit-reduction plan.
[SNIP]
"We committed to changing the way our government in Washington does business so that we're no longer squandering billions of tax dollars on programs that have outlived their usefulness or exist solely because of the power of a lobbyist or an interest group," Obama said.

Mom and I are entirely dependent on Social Security and Social Security Disability Insurance and Medicare. If he cut's it or the "benefits" of it, we will LITERALLY be out on the street with no income or medical care. And so will perhaps another 50 million or more American Citizens who's only "entitlement" is that they paid 12% of their annual incomes into social security and medicare during their ENTIRE WORKING LIVES.
And as Dusty Vet showed in another link, on the priot thread, veterans health care costs TO THE VETERANS will increase as well.

It reminds me of Nacho Libre when the tortilla chips were stolen and Nacho was asked, "Did you not tell them that they were the Lord's chips?" The pronunciation is "cheeps" of course, so now, in our house, we call tortilla chips the Lord's cheeps. Now I can think that they were made by a cheep monk.

Jokes?

A crusty old biker, we'll call Wally, on a summer ride in the country,
Old Wally walks into a roadside bar and sees a sign hanging over the bar which reads:
CHEESEBURGER------------ $ 1.50
CHICKEN SANDWICH-------- $ 2.50
HAND JOB-----------------$ 10.00
Checking his wallet for the necessary payment, he walks up to the bar and beckons to the exceptionally attractive female bartender.
"Yes" she inquires with a knowing smile, "can I help you"
I was wondering, whispers the old biker, are you the young lady who gives the hand-jobs?
Yes I am, she purrs, I am....
The old biker replies, well, wash your hands, I want a cheeseburger........

It's really irritating that Israel is being put on the spot by the elitist liberal media when shit like that happens. I wouldn't worry that much. It's not politically popular to put 50 million people on the street. Remember there's a huge gap between what Obama says and what he can actually DO.

Still, hard decisions will have to be made at some point, or Social Security and Medicare will go away anyway since there will be no money, or there will be plenty of money but it will be worthless.

If I were a soldier, I can see being reluctant to kill actual soldiers from more or less "civilized" nations. But it's hard to imagine ever being reluctant to kill an Islamist terrorist. If I were ever on a plane with one, it would probably take ten people to stop me from tearing his eyes out. Something about that scum just wakes up the attack dog in me.

With so many of those people out in the street clinging to guns, that would make for one unforgettable block party. You're right, the sheer number of suddenly homeless people would make O's presidency a failure. They talked of Hoovervilles in the great depression. They'll want to avoid that one.

It all depends on whether Obama wants to be a hero to the hard-left base, or a hero to all of America.

The current economic meltdown is an opportunity in disguise. It gives him the chance to gut and reshape the social welfare "safety net", push alot of people out of their undeserved taxpayer financed nests -- if he chooses the wise path -- sort of a domestic version of Nixon-goes-to-China. Only a liberal can get away with making the necessary changes.

One thing's for sure -- we cannot continue on the road we're on now... too many hands in the cookie jar. If he chooses to do nothing substantial, or worse yet, adds to the burden, he will be viewed by the future as just another pandering politician... just another caretaker president fiddling while the nation dies. I don't think he'll settle for that.

Interesting video that makes some worthwhile distinctions. Shows how little the Western supporters of Hamas know about the Middle East. Most of them have never been there. Hamas = Taliban = one seriously sick religion.

Today, just for the record, I checked the following definitions in the Concise Oxford Dictionary online: militant -(adjective) favouring confrontational methods in support of a cause, (noun) a militant person;
terrorist - (noun) a person who uses violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims.

And you know which word the MSM prefers.

Question lol. How many seconds to you post before the time hits the hour?

84 Fenway_Nation  Thu, Jan 8, 2009 2:03:25am

Fruitcupitron 3000 would've gotten it at 2 AM and not a second earlier. Unfortunately, I still haven't uploaded any lizards into its 'Friendly' facial recognition files....and it's stuck on the 'KILL' setting.

So as it stands, the Fruitcupitron 3000 couldn't tell me, Blue, littleoldlady apart from a rampaging Berley moonbat mob hopped up on patchouli.

124 Spare O'Lake  Thu, Jan 8, 2009 2:38:05am

Good Morning LGF.

Israel must now proceed to degrade the Hamas Terrorist Entity in Gaza by killing or capturing enough of the leadership and rank and file to end the rocket/missile attacks from Gaza. This implies a large search and destroy ground and air operation in southern Gaza.

An immediate reoccupation of the Philadelphi strip is also 100% necessary to prevent restocking. Egypt cannot be trusted since Mubarak is currently in denial about the arms smuggling, and in any event he could be removed from power at any moment by Islaofascists in Egypt.

Then, house to house searches of the entire Gaza strip will be necessary to find and destroy all munitions, tunnels and other terrorist infrastructure.

Only then will Israel be in a strong position to agree to a cease fire and to negotiate longer term security arrangements with other political entities.

Now is the time when Israel must remain steadfast and not allow a defeat in Gaza to be snatched from the jaws of victory. Olmert, Barak and Livni will hopefully follow through with the military operation and not capitulate to the UN and EU oil whores. If Kadima once again sells out Israeli security in order to secure a momentary pre-election hudna, then hopefully Israeli voters will not be fooled and Netanyahu will get his chance to finish the job.

Israel needs to do a full mobilization and prepare to invade Lebanon.

Remove your shoes from your feet,

Hear the trumpets of anger.
Hear so that you may see,

The trumpets of Jericho
So the Prince of the Army of God spoke.
On the seventh day, when the morning turns red,
the great state will fall
And everything will become ashes,
for I will burn it with fire.
Hear so that you may see!
I am the Prince of the Army of the Lord.
And we are coming.
Remove your shoes from your feet,
for the ground you stand on is holy.
Trumpets sound and the people scream,
Tubas sound and tremor Jericho.

I received the following message from the principal of this school:

January 20 marks the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama. We at RKA would like to show his inauguration and acceptance speech to as many of our students as possible. We have been planning on running back-to-back assemblies throughout the afternoon in the auditorium where students would get to see a 45-minute recorded segment of his speech projected on a large screen. This would allow most students to see the speech (although not live) at some point during the day. We have however run into some difficulties in the coordination of this project. One problem we are having is that the time for his speech has not been announced. We wanted to let parents know of our plans to allow as many students to see the speech as possible, but we also want to ask parents for their flexibility and understanding regarding the mounting of such a large undertaking. We also encourage interested families to record the inauguration so students can view it in the evening in the event that our dream cannot be realized. (emphasis mine)

I am just wondering whether this will be before or after the Pro-palestinian march.

174 Joo-LiZ  Thu, Jan 8, 2009 4:09:16am

Hey guys,

I seem to recall reading as an aside in an article on Hamas' tactics that one of the ways they are trying to lure Israeli soldiers to be kidnapped was by wearing actual IDF uniforms.

Has anyone else heard of this?

If it is true, I desperately need a source, PLEASE e-mail me if you find something corroborating that. (my nick is blue)

Thanks a million! I'll owe you!

Good morning.

The over night stock futures are mixed, the Nikkei and Hang Seng were down about 3.8% overnight in reaction to the sharp drop yesterday.

Later today the Messiah is going to give a speech in the economy in which he is going to say that basically the Great Depression is returning unless he spends trillions in government spending programs. Get ready to hear about a lot of regulation, public works projects, and nationalizing health care, all painted as a jobs program.

re: #173 madtechie

Let your kid pull a sickie for the day.

A temporary ceasefire would be a Hamas victory:
1. Hamas will use it to restock, regroup and rearm.
2. IDF will lose its momentum.
3. Hamas will retain and enhance its capacity to launch daily missile attacks.
4. Smuggling of weapons into Gaza will continue via undestroyed existing tunnels and/or new tunnels.
5. Kadima will hope to win the upcoming election by bullshitting the Israeli electorate, claiming that they have changed the situation in Gaza when all that will have been accomplished is a temporary lull in missile fire at the pleasure of Hamas. If they do win the election they will make sure that Olmert is not prosecuted.
6. Obama will be inaugurated before Israel can complete the job and will further undercut Israel's position.

I have made a regular practice of trashing the media, and with good reason imho, but there are many exceptions and a few truly great ones.

Fwiw, I have good reason to believe that Bob Woodward is telling the truth, and then some, when he says he is sitting on a tremendous story having to do with the reasons for our success in Iraq. He has compared this to the Manhattan Project during World War 2. I think I know what it is. If I am right it will be the greatest story of the age.

Wish I could say more but, like the 40 or so journalist-patriots who knew about the atomic bomb before Hiroshima and withheld what they knew, I will have to wait.

Here's a very good column by John Kass of the Chicago Tribune on how Obama muscled Reid to get the Burris fiasco off the front page.

Obama serves Reid taste of Chicago Way

So the Chicago Way hauled off and slapped the U.S. Senate in the face—one of those backhands with the knuckles to unsuspecting lips—and guess who blinked?

It wasn't Chicago.

It was the Senate.

Get used to it, America. And it won't be the last time either.

Only a week ago, Obama, Reid and other Democratic leaders were adamant that they'd block any Senate appointment made by tainted Illinois Gov. Rod "Dead Meat" Blagojevich, who has been charged with trying to sell Obama's seat to the highest bidder.

Their statements back then were stern and inflexible, invoking the honor of the Senate and how they'd never let an allegedly corrupt governor put his greasy paws on their august dignity. Those statements weren't bland. They were so tough they had hair on them. More hair than Blagojevich, even.

But today's news is that Obama, often treated by the national media as the gentle Mr. Tumnus of American politics, got privately hardball with Reid over the Tombstone issue.

According a story in the Tribune by Rick Pearson and Mike Dorning, Obama didn't want the Chicago Way on parade in Washington, less than two weeks before his inauguration, when he formally becomes the agent of the change we can believe in.

The stench of Chicago politics is just starting to leak onto the Messiah.

People might start asking questions, wondering how Obama could come out of a city run by the wrought-iron fists of the Daley machine but smell like the neck of a baby after a bath.

I'm still wondering.

Yet Obama was tricky, not mentioning his phone call to Reid when talking to reporters Wednesday. He said Tombstone was the Senate's business, not his business.

The MSM continues to is let Obama have it any way he wants.

Obama almost wasn't asked anything about Burris on Wednesday. One reporter barely tossed it up at the end, after others asked him about the war in the Gaza Strip (Obama still can't comment about Gaza because he's not yet president) and the economy (though he's not president, you can't stop the guy from commenting on that one).

What Obama forgot to mention is that he ordered the Tombstone issue settled because it became his problem. So he told Reid to cave.

In political terms, Reid rolled up his sleeves, put on his favorite "Kiss the Chef" apron, got his fingers dusty with flour and baked himself a big humble pie. He scarfed it down in front of reporters Wednesday, without a fork, all but licking his fingers, that pie was so sweet and tasty. Mmm-mmm.

More on Blago:

Illinois impeachment panel bristles at report of Rod Blagojevich's hiring practices

SPRINGFIELD — Angry lawmakers debating Gov. Rod Blagojevich's impeachment blasted him Wednesday after the disclosure of a secret report revealing allegations of how his office aggressively pushed to skirt state hiring laws.

The impeachment panel pressed on, even as it began to look like legislators won't get to quickly hear covert FBI recordings of what officials say show Blagojevich cutting a deal to sign horse-racing legislation in exchange for campaign contributions. The governor's criminal lawyers objected in federal court to the panel's request to listen to the recordings, and a hearing is set for Thursday.

Blago basically saw the State offices as a Democratic Party hiring hall.

The confidential report, disclosed by the Tribune during Blagojevich's 2006 re-election campaign, said Blagojevich's office sought to circumvent hiring laws for veterans, falsify hiring records, hire unqualified employees and boost vacation time and pay by faking the background and experience of workers.

Zaldwaynaka Scott, then the inspector general, said the administration's hiring strategy "reflects not merely an ignorance of the law, but complete and utter contempt for the law."

This goes back to 2006, when Blago was running for re-election and some guys named Obama and Emanuel were running his re election campaign.

Yet the Messiah walks on water according to the MSM.

261 Ford_Prefect  Thu, Jan 8, 2009 5:28:37am

From Newt Gingrich (Ya gotta love a guy with a lizard first name):

The Four Things to Look for in the Stimulus Package

As Congress and the President move forward to pass an economic stimulus package later this month, here are four things to watch for:

1. How does it affect small businesses and the self-employed? Small businesses are the job creation engines of our economy. Any stimulus package should focus first and foremost on them.
2. How are entrepreneurial start-ups supported and encouraged? We should have our economic eye on the General Motors of the next thirty years, not the last thirty years.
3. Does the plan maximize the rate of investment in U.S. companies? By making the United States the best place to invest, we will make it the best place to create new jobs.
4. Does the package encourage growth in productivity? Making American workers more productive not only increases our ability to compete with foreign competitors, it also increases incomes.

Also this:

I want to end today by asking those who are criticizing Israel for attacking Hamas terrorists in Gaza this simple question:

What would you do if someone were firing missiles into your neighborhood?

Those critics who claim that Israel’s response to years of sustained missile launches deliberately aimed at its civilians is “disproportionate” have it exactly wrong. The problem is not that Israel is doing too much; the problem is that it’s doing too little.

No peace is possible -- no diplomatic solution is reachable -- as long as Hamas maintains its capacity to launch missiles at Israeli civilians. And anyone who is not willing to demand that Hamas immediately and permanently stop this aggression has no moral standing to judge Israel.

Just ask yourself: What would you do?

Rayyan Trained His Kids to Die

When Hamas leader Nizar Rayyan was assassinated in an IAF strike last week, his four wives and 11 of his children died with him. According to his surviving children, the death of the Rayyan family children was not an accident: Rayyan had trained his wives and children to die with him as "martyrs."

Surviving family members spoke to local Arab media and said that in the days before his death, Rayyan had repeatedly asked his children, "Who wants to die with me as a martyr?" The children would respond, "Yes, daddy, we all want to be with you alive or dead."

Rayyan's adult daughter, Wala, said even the younger children wished to die with their father. "If you had asked my four-year-old sister Aisha, who died in the attack, she would have told you that she preferred to die as a martyr," Wala told Ma'an news.

One of Rayyan's daughter-in-laws said she was offered the chance to die with the family. She stopped by the family's large home in Jabaliya and was asked by Rayyan if she wished to die with him, his wives and their children. She agreed to die, but later left the building, shortly before the IAF strike.

As it turned out, when Rayyan offered his daughter-in-law the "opportunity" to die he had already received a phone call from the IDF warning him to evacuate his house due to an impending airstrike

The guy got a call from the IDF telling him to evacuate due to an impending airstrike - but stayed with his wives and children.

Several Malaysian Muslim organisations have started a national campaign to boycott U.S. products and "Jewish companies" (what the heck that may be?).

Malaysia boycott USA products to punish US support of Israel

Besides certainly buying more U.S. products myself to nullify the Malaysian boycott a bit, I though a bit of tit for tat was warranted. See how they like their own medicine. When Democratic President Franklin Delano Roosevelt enacted the first Social Security law, he set the retirement age at 65, knowing that average life expectancy was 47 years. Few Americans would live to see any benefits from his new system.

Now that average life expectancy is approaching 80 years, Obama must recalibrate the retirement age to around 90 years to accomplish the same effect.

Social Security and Medicare always have been government Ponzi schemes dependent upon ever increasing numbers of workers/contributors to sustain themselves. With U.S. population growth leveling off, the threat of systemic collapse increases dramatically. We must begin aggressive procreation, or admit millions more immigrants, to offset this disaster.

For those not used to reading market related articles, good news can always be spun as bad news and bad news can be spun as good news. Here is a prime example of spinning the news:

UPDATE: Wal-Mart falls short of same-store-sales estimate

Okay, if you glance quickly at the headline you think sales are down, right?

But then you read the article and you see a different story.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Thursday that December same-store sales rose 1.7% excluding fuel, falling short of the estimate for an increase of 2.8% in a survey of analysts by Thomson Reuters. In the year-ago period, Wal-Mart said same-store sales rose 2.4%. "Due to the difficult economy and severe winter weather in some regions, the holiday season was more challenging for retailers than expected," said Eduardo Castro-Wright, vice chairman, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. The retailing giant also cut its forecast for fourth-quarter earnings from continuing operations to a range of 91 cents to 94 cents a share, compared to its prior view of $1.03 to $1.07 a share. The company cited higher expenses and lower-than-expected sales at Sam's Club and Wal-Mart International. (Updates to include fourth-quarter outlook.)

Wal-Mart's same store sales actually rose 1.7% over last year. It's just that this was lesxs than some group of surveyed analysts said they thought Wal-Mart would do. Wal-Mart itself did not come up with the inaccurate estimate.

But instead of saying that a group of analysts guessed wrong,t hey write a head line saying that Wal-Mart falls short.

In a couple weeks the same headline will read that Wal-Mart reports increasing sales.

Good Morning Lizard Nation!

This was posted in the links by freedomplow, but worth a re-post here.

President Bush Tried to Rein In Fan and Fred
Democrats and the media have the housing story wrong.

When Republican Richard Shelby of Alabama, then chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, pushed for comprehensive GSE reform in 2005, Democrat Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut successfully threatened a filibuster. Later, after Fannie and Freddie collapsed, Mr. Dodd asked, "Why weren't we doing more?" He then voted for the Bush reforms that he once called "ill-advised."

But Mr. Dodd wasn't the only Democrat to heap abuse on the Bush reforms. Rep. Barney Frank of Massachusetts defended Fannie and Freddie as "fundamentally sound" and labeled the president's proposals as "inane." He later voted for the reforms. Sen. Charles Schumer of New York dismissed Mr. Bush's "safety and soundness concerns" as "a straw man." "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," was the helpful advice of both Sen. Thomas Carper of Delaware and Rep. Maxine Waters of California. Rep. Kendrick Meeks of Florida berated a Bush official at a hearing, saying, "I am just pissed off" at the administration for raising the issue.

U.S. Initial Jobless Claims Fell 24,000 to 467,000 Last Week

Jan. 8 (Bloomberg) -- The number of Americans filing first-time claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly fell last week, while total benefit rolls surged to a 26-year high, signaling companies got a jump on firings last year as the recession deepened.

Initial jobless claims fell by 24,000 to 467,000 in the week that ended Jan. 3, the lowest level in almost three months, the Labor Department said today in Washington. The total number of people receiving benefits rose a week earlier to 4.6 million, the most since 1982.

While the government projects a surge in firings in late December and early January, job cuts may have come earlier last year as sinking sales and the worst credit conditions in seven decades forced companies such as General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC to pare costs. The claims report comes hours before President- elect Barack Obama delivers a speech on the economic outlook in a bid to build support for his stimulus plan.

``Businesses are now capitulating, and they are starting to cut the muscle along with the fat,'' Ethan Harris, co-head of U.S. economic research at Barclays Capital Inc. in New York, said before the report. ``There are distortions because of the auto plant shutdowns and the end of the year, but we're fundamentally in deep-recession type levels.''

Jobless claims were projected to rise to 545,000, according to the median projection of 35 economists in a Bloomberg News survey. Estimates ranged from 480,000 to 600,000. Claims in the prior week were revised to 491,000 from 492,000.

My read is that companies swung the axe fast once the credit lock up happened. It was not a secret that this was coming the only question was what would the powers that be do in reaction. When there was the initial fumbling over the financial system bail out, I think many companies started dropping payroll fast.

The rise in total numbers receiving benefits indicates that folks are having difficulty finding other work, which is not surprising at this stage. After a company goes through a lay off, they are going to be hesitant to add staff back on for a while.

Also, some folks who were considering retirement are now staying on the job due to losses in their 401K values, so their jobs are not opening up either.

BOE Cuts Rate to Lowest Since Bank’s Creation in 1694

Jan. 8 (Bloomberg) -- The Bank of England cut the benchmark interest rate to the lowest since the central bank was founded in 1694 as policy makers tried to prevent the credit squeeze from deepening Britain’s recession.

The Monetary Policy Committee, led by Governor Mervyn King, trimmed the bank rate by a half point to 1.5 percent. The result matched the median forecast of 60 economists in a Bloomberg News survey. The pound rose against the euro and the dollar.

“The availability of credit to both households and businesses has tightened further, pointing to the need for further measures to increase the flow of lending to the non- financial sector,” the Bank of England said in a statement. “Output is likely to continue to fall sharply during the first part of this year.”

The reduction limits the central bank’s scope to keep fighting the recession with its main policy tool. That may spur King to cooperate with Prime Minister Gordon Brown to inject money into the economy and the financial system through so- called quantitative easing.

“They’ll come down below 1 percent by the second quarter,” said Philip Shaw, chief economist at Investec Securities in London. “Things have deteriorated further and this highlights the need for further monetary stimulus. Quantitative easing or non-conventional monetary policy techniques are on the cards.”

It all boils down to risk. Lenders are so scared of risk now, after ignoring it for a decade, that they are scared to death to do anything. You have to be a high quality risk to get a loan right now, which is how it should have been all along.

Well, the terrorists in Lebanon are busy trying to open a second front against Israel - attacking with rockets, despite UNIFIL requirements under UN SCR 1701 to disarm all militias operating South of the Litani River.. Hizbullah says that it wasn't them, but that's BS since no one does anything in Southern Lebanon without their express approval. You can't sneeze without Hizbullah saying so.

Meanwhile, the Israelis continue to get attacked from Gaza, and the Lebanon attacks are likely part of a triangle strategy to take pressure off Hamas by diverting attention from Gaza to Lebanon. Iran is pulling the strings, and the media continues to ignore their role in this conflict as well.

I have a comment concerning "gays" serving openly in the military.

1. I am against it. Why? Because a military unit must be the ultimate in dedicated practicality, and must not be perverted in its reason for existence, or its focus on that reason. Jimmy Carter damaged military effectiveness to the point of ineffectiveness with his use of it for social experiments, IMHO. Many, many soldier types do not want to share a fighting position, or a barracks with open homosexuals.

2. Incidents WILL occur, in latrines, barracks, and other places. These incidents occur now, but can generally be handled quietly and with a rapid discharge. These incidents are extremely BAD for morale. In the past, exposed homosexuals were discharged and escorted to the main gate the same day, at least I'm told that by old vets.

3. When homosexuals get in a position of authority, they tend to promote and surround themselves with like minded people. So that you eventually get whole organizations largely made up of, and consisting of homosexuals.

4. Examples of where homosexuals dominate a large organization may be found here.

5. We still have the most powerful and effective military in the world, but liberals see the military as "evil" and wish to pervert it from its intended mission. They will destroy it as an effective war making organization in the name of "progress".

Thats just the way I see the issue.

The problem is who do you replace them with? Thow all the bums out, replace everyon with their opposite number, and what have you really gained? We learned that lesson in 1994. It doesn't really matter much if you pick Larry, Moe, or Curley. Any way you slice it, you are still getting a stooge. There are only a handfull of issues where the Republicans are clearly better than the Democrats (gun control being, IMHO, the most important one). Everyone you can vote for in either Party is pretty well compromised by the time they get to Washington.

We need a Party that puts conservative valuse about simple political expediancey. Being Democrat Lite (i.e. claiming the Republicans don't suck as badly as Democrats do) is a losing strategy. It has all the marks of staying a losing strategy for the forseeable future. Only by returning to the smaller, less intrusive government that Republicans have always given lip service to can save the party from itself. Continuing to try to "one up" Kleagle Byrd in getting Federal Pork isn't a winning strategy.

2:59 PM Finally, someone takes credit for this morning's Katyusha strike on Israel's north. The PFLP-GC which takes orders from Damascus seems to be behind the rocket attack on Israel.

I recall a post yesterday about Hamas / PA(Fatah) meeting in Syria taking place. Is it just merely coincidence that another Palestinian group based in Damascus is launching rockets today? I doubt it.

You are implying that Syria is giving material support for terrorism. Didn't Bush say that if you are not with us, you are with the terrorists? The fucking Media (and the Democrats) howelled when Bush said it, but it is true.

The time has come to put up or shut up. If we are going to continue doing nothing while Syria and Iran fight a proxy war against us, the me are going to slowly, but surely, lose. We need to get back the clarity that George Bush demonstrated in his immediate response to 9-11. The world has changed. SSDD is not an option.

100% correct. Unfortunately, the only way the 535 idiots on the hill get elected is by throwing money at their constituents. I wish there was a provision inthe constitution that allowed for a popular vote referendum on ALL elected officials. The only question would be: Should ALL elected officials be fired and replaced with new people?

I'd say that - believe it or not - most of them have their heart in the right place, but that the old adage about power corrupting is true. Once in office, all but the most honorable exceptions go down hill. The McCain/Palin mantra of "Reform" struck a nerve with me this reason.

A decade or two ago, there was a call for a constitutional amendment for term limits. I think that's the way to go.

Thanks to those Lizards who responded to my call for help a couple of days ago in finding statistics on Israeli victims of the rocket attacks

I finally came across that graph I was looking for, detailing Israelis killed and wounded by rocket & mortar attacks from Gaza.

This graph is from The Israel Project.

Please note, this only includes data up to September 2008, and does not include statistics over the last 3 months.

According to the graph, although Israel had suffered "only" 24 casualties since 2001, 1029 Israelis have been wounded.

More specifically, you can see that while the "occupation" was still in effect (the "justification" for the attacks), 7 Israelis were killed and 178 wounded. Hoping for peace, Israel ended the occupation, and was thanked with an additional, 17 civilian deaths and 851 wounded, from 2005 - September 2008, inclusive.

These number will have increased significantly in the last several months, with Hamas increased rocket range and capabilities.

In other words, even if you completely ignore the psychological trauma of living under the constant threat of rocket attacks... when you include the "wounded" count, the number of Israeli victims is NOT insignificant. This is even more true when you consider the vast efforts of the Israeli government to protect its citizens (bomb shelters, early warning systems, etc.), and there is also little doubt that a large number of these wounded could have been added to the "killed" count if it were not for the heroic efforts of Israeli emergency response medics.

It is also crucial to remember, that these figures come over a period in which "only" ~25,000 Israelis (mostly in Sderot & the sparsely populated area around Gaza) were within rocket & mortar range. Now that Hamas has weapons capable of targetting over 750,000 civilians in major cities scattered throughout the south, we could easily have expected these numbers to skyrocket if Israel not taken action.

The only thing that I disagree with you on somewhat is that the war will continue. Certainly, Syria and Iran will continue to launch their attacks on America and Israel through their proxies, but the question is whether we will continue to fight that war ourselves.

Obama is less than reassuring on the issue. He has, at times, indicated that he will change back to pre-9-11 behavior, treating terrorist attacks (and terrorists) as common criminals instead of as non-State actors operating with aid from various rouge nations. Because that worked out so well the last time we did that.

This is the last paragraph from the pig Carter's op-ed in today's Washington Post titled, "The Uneccessary War."

I won't bother posting his arguement that it was Israel that broke the cease fire, etc etc.

The hope is that when further hostilities are no longer productive, Israel, Hamas and the United States will accept another cease-fire, at which time the rockets will again stop and an adequate level of humanitarian supplies will be permitted to the surviving Palestinians, with the publicized agreement monitored by the international community. The next possible step: a permanent and comprehensive peace.

Look at that.

"Surviving Palestinians."

They will be referred to as "survivors."

You know why.

Apparently the main goal of Annie Lennox, Jimmy Carter, etc, is to hope for a real Holocaust of the Palis, as to take away the Jews "victomology weapon."

ohfergodssake (h/t Instapundit). This from our buddies at the Economist. Apparently American expats are rushing to give up their citizenship in order to escape taxes. (where are they gonna live? - the UK?)

Under the proposed legislation, expatriates surrendering their citizenship with a net worth of $2m or more, or a high income, will have to act as if they have sold all their worldwide assets at a fair market price. If the unrealised gains on these assets exceed $600,000, capital-gains tax will apply. A study by the Congressional Budget Office guesses that the new law will progressively net the government up to $286m over five years. It is unclear, however, why people would suffer the consequences if they did not expect to save money in the long run by escaping American taxes.

That expats want to leave at all is evidence of America's odd tax system. Along with citizens of North Korea and a few other countries, Americans are taxed based on their citizenship, rather than where they live. So they usually pay twice—to their host country and the Internal Revenue Service. As this makes citizenship less palatable, Congress has erected large barriers to stop them jumping ship. In 1996 it forced people who renounced citizenship to continue paying income taxes for an extra ten years. Theoretically, the new law allows for a cleaner break.

John Howard’s decision to stay at the luxurious Blair House mansion in Washington DC has sparked a firestorm of protest in the US.

Outraged American taxpayers are demanding the former Australian prime minister book a hotel or stay at the Australian embassy.

The story is also a hot topic on US radio and TV talk shows.

Beautiful land, beach real estate... all for the Palis to form their own country and prove they can make something of it like the evil Juice did in Judea (interesting word that, wonder where it came from, Palis?)

It's called Sinai.

re: #377 Iron Fist

The only thing that I disagree with you on somewhat is that the war will continue. Certainly, Syria and Iran will continue to launch their attacks on America and Israel through their proxies, but the question is whether we will continue to fight that war ourselves.

Obama is less than reassuring on the issue. He has, at times, indicated that he will change back to pre-9-11 behavior, treating terrorist attacks (and terrorists) as common criminals instead of as non-State actors operating with aid from various rouge nations. Because that worked out so well the last time we did that.

I expect to Obama to make a half hearted attempt to fake conducting "something" in Afghanistan and soon declare victory and come home. Since Reid already declared victory in Iraq due his own brilliance, they will also soon come home. And from then on as you said, he will start issuing arrest warrants and give speeches declaring the kingdom of of hope and change has arrived.

No, Monica Crowley's SISTER is married to Colmes. Monica is a conservative commentor at Fox on occasion. He worked with Nixon organizing is papers after he left office, I believe.

Left to right.
GHWB, decent guy didn't finish the job in GWI. Blew it with tax policy.
BHO, Marxist the ACORN candidate.
GWB, again a decent guy. Has done okay on the GWoT, could have been more aggressive. A spending and immigration disaster.
BJC, .... BJ..... 'nough said.
JEC, absolute friggin' disaster on every front, enabler to thugocracies everywhere. May his name be blotted out.

24 years of leadership and 4-8 more to come in that pictures. Sad commentary on where we are that those are the best we can do.

The one missing RWR, represented the best. With a few exception he was the best of the best.

Yes. From her wiki page:

She holds a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Political Science from Colgate University and a doctorate in international relations from Columbia University (2000). The title of her doctoral dissertation was "Clearer than truth: Determining and preserving grand strategy. The evolution of American policy toward the People's Republic of China under Truman and Nixon". In 1990, she became Foreign Policy Assistant to former President Richard Nixon, a post she held from 1990 until his death in 1994. She was an editorial adviser and consultant on his last two books, Seize the Moment (1992) and Beyond Peace (1994). Crowley used this period to record her conversations and observations about Nixon (she kept a diary), and she published two subsequent books on the former President in his final years: Nixon Off the Record: His Candid Commentary on People (1996) and Nixon in Winter (1998).

We can end the State Sponsorship of the GWoT. Without that, the ability of the enemy will be reduced to almost tolerable levels.

She is a commentator and often on Fox News.

She worked with Richard Nixon as an advisor and editorial assistant in early 90's.

Apparently American expats are rushing to give up their citizenship in order to escape taxes.

As the article notes, the US is one of the few countries that tax its citizens based on "worldwide income", regardless of residence. It's awfully, um, aggressive.

Anybody notice the number of economic/domestic policy speeches The One has been giving to distract from his lack of a clue about foreign policy right now?

Funny how the "one president at a time" buck pass doesn't apply to domestic policy, too.

Hmmmm...

Going for the artistic and heroic poses of Palestinian thugs stoning Israeli troops.

Nothing like peaceful demonstrations against war.... complete with papier mache rockets calling for Israel's destruction.

And in the odd caption of the day, we've got AFP getting cozy with Indonesian terrorists who are busy training for jihad:

Indonesian members of Front Umat Islam conduct a "military training" using rifle for hunting birds as part of the group's recruitement and training of holy fighters following Israeli's attacks on Gaza, in Klaten on January 8, 2009. Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, is a strong supporter of the Palestinian cause a
