Ahhh, a music thread just another attempt to drive away those of us not musically inclined!

Shouldn't we discuss something more important?

Nevermore.

Yikes ...what does that mean ...?

20 jaunte  Sat, Jan 10, 2009 4:33:39pm

All The Things You Are

Time and again I've longed for adventure,
Something to make my heart beat the faster.
What did I long for? I never really knew.
Finding your love I've found my adventure,
Touching your hand, my heart beats the faster,
All that I want in all of this world is you.

You are the promised kiss of springtime
That makes the lonely winter seem long.
You are the breathless hush of evening
That trembles on the brink of a lovely song.
You are the angel glow that lights a star,
The dearest things I know are what you are.
Some day my happy arms will hold you,
And some day I'll know that moment divine,
When all the things you are, are mine!

"Charlie Parker was quoted as saying this song had his favorite lyrics. He used to call it "YATAG" which is an acronym for the lines "you are the angel glow" in the "B" part of the tune."

Go IDF!

Israel to step up assault on Hamas

The Israeli military appeared to be preparing for a major new ground assault against Gaza City and other towns tonight after dropping leaflets warning residents it was about to "escalate" its offensive against Hamas.

The tens of thousands of leaflets, dropped on parts of Gaza City, the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiya and the south of the territory, warned residents: "The Israeli Defence Force will soon escalate its operations against tunnels, weapons warehouses, terrorist infrastructure and terrorists all over the Gaza Strip. To keep yourself and your families safe, you are ordered not to be close to terrorists, weapons warehouses and the places where the terrorists operate."

It is simple. They are not "cheating" per say. The poll is based upon the number of "computers" voting, not actual people. I have tested this and I believe that the server is looking at MAC address vs IP address of the the responder. Regardless of the IP address, if the MAC address is the same, you are excluded from voting again. But MAC addresses can be spoofed. Anyone up for the test?

58 Killgore Trout  Sat, Jan 10, 2009 4:49:56pm

This article is from a few days ago. I must have missed it.....
The CNN strategy

The strategy is as simple as it is cynical: Provoke Israel by playing Russian roulette with its children, firing rockets at kindergartens, playgrounds and hospitals; hide behind its own civilians when firing at Israeli civilians; refuse to build bunkers for its own civilians; have TV cameras ready to transmit every image of dead Palestinians, especially children; exaggerate the number of civilians killed by including as "children" Hamas fighters who are 16 or 17 years old and as "women," female terrorists.

Hamas itself has a name for this. They call it "the CNN strategy" (this is not to criticize CNN or any other objective news source for doing its job; it is to criticize Hamas for exploiting the freedom of press which it forbids in Gaza). The CNN strategy is working because decent people all over the world are naturally sickened by images of dead and injured children. When they see such images repeatedly flashed across TV screens, they tend to react emotionally. Rather than asking why these children are dying and who is to blame for putting them in harm's way, average viewers, regardless of their political or ideological perspective, want to see the killing stopped. They blame those whose weapons directly caused the deaths, rather than those who provoked the violence by deliberately targeting civilians.

Note that it is Hamas who uses this term.

Couple of things

Great Pic here of a peaceful demo in Athens. Peaceful if you mean a protestor carrying a model of a Grad rocket.

You can go around and around on whether Israel should have poulled out of Gaza in 2005. Yes it led to this war but this war is, I submit, the best thing to ever happened to the Palestinians. The only way the militant segment of Palestinian society was ever going to be discredited required them to take their people to war and get their buts kicked. This has now happened. It is too early say how exactly Gaza War I will play out but Israel is not going to accept Hamas having any military force after this war is done. Hamas has brought death, defeat and humiliation on its people; even in Palestinian society there will be a price to pay and yes Palestinians will see the images of their children and schools being used as shields, there will be no forgiveness for what they did to their own people and that was before the atrocities they committed against the former PA leadership in Gaza. Defeat is the terrible teacher that gave destroyed the fascist beast in their people's hear to give birth to modern Germany and Japan. Let us pray that a new Palestinian society will similarly grow from Palestinian defeat. Remember no Palestinian radical can say for a long time that Israel is weak, that Israel won't fight and that war somehow offers better prospects than nation building. There will be hatred for Israel but Israel will be very wise to be VERY aggressive in investing in Palestinian reconstruction and nation building. Sincere, verified efforts at peace, requiring real reforms and no terror from Palestinians will cut the political legs out from the militants.

But first, victory.

I posted more details yesterday, but just a reminder that there is a pro-Israel rally at the Jewish community center in St Louis Park, Minnesota. 3 PM tomorrow.

The fighting has started on the GazaCam.

I've not been here for a few days.

Where do I find the link to the GazaCam?

Thanks.

On a completely different note... I am now posting this from a brand new AMD Phenom QuadCore machine running Windows 7 beta. Got it as a late birthday and Christmas gift combined. And it flies like the wind! :D :D :D

I hear good things about 7. Sounds like you like it.

I found it up in the spin-off links earlier this afternoon. It's under the "Middle East" category.

re: #74 pre-Boomer Marine brat

I've got a few comments sprinkled through the CNN/Blood Libel posts.

I can cover the lack of major damage from an explosion that supposedly killed two people angle.

There are no (zero, nien, nyet, nada, none) precision guided weapons with warheads that small, anywhere on the planet. There is no such thing as a child seeking warhead (that isn't named "Mom").

People do hunt 'em and eat 'em, but I hear they taste very gamey, and require some special prep to minimize it.

Both. CNN uses it's 1st amendment right to free speech to broadcast this trash. ham-ass willingly uses them them to spread their lies and they willfully do as they are asked. They are both complicit in this whole charade.

Yeah. Has one or two irritating quirks, though: They seem to have dumped Network Neighborhoodddddddddddddddddddddddddddd...

...alright, that was flipping wierd, I got as far as the d in neighborhood and suddenly the letter started repeating really really fast... even though I wasn't holding down the key. It stopped when I hit another key. I've deleted most of the extra d's.

Anyway, as I was saying... they seem to have dumped navigation into Network Neighborhood to find and visit shared out folders on other machines. Or at least it doesn't work on this machine. I can get to Network, and ask it to list machines, but none of the other machines on the LAN show up. I can manually type in the name of the machine and folder, and then navigate around inside that using Windows Explorer, doing something like:

\machinenamesharefolder

I just can't get there any other way, such as from inside the Browse window of another program (to set a save folder to a directory on the Network Attached Storage box, f'rex). I HOPE they fix that issue, because it's really a nuisance.

re: #112 NomadOfNorad

Whoops! LGF stripped out the extra characters from that example machine path name. It SHOULD have been TWO backslashes at the start of that name, and one backslash between machinename and sharedfolder.

in all my time in Arizona and NM I have yet to see one of those damned things...are you sure they aren't big gophers or something?

I used to have a somewhat steady gig playing with a Jazz quartet at a bar in Santa Barbara just off of State Street. One evening, just before One in the morning - as we were ready to call it a night - a sax player came in. He mentioned he was backing a Hollywood actor who, under the delusion that he was a musician, was fronting a band and Santa Barbara was one of the stops on the concert tour. The sax player asked if he wouldn't mind sitting in for one song - saying he wanted to play real music at least once in that evening. We didn't know the sax player from Adam, but figuring that the bar was getting empty, and we were going to play just one more song, we thought what the hell.

Anyway, the song was "All the thing you are."

We counted it off, just hoping the sax player wouldn't step on it. As he played through the head, the band just looked at each other, slack-jawed, not believing what we were hearing. And then he moved to the solo. I think he played through the form about 8 times, each time around even better than the previous.

It was one of the most memorable moments of my musical career, such as it was. Oh, the sax player: He's Jerry Pinter.

Back in the great long ago (the late 70s) it was fun to go down to Pioneer Square in Seattle and watch Gary Peacock play bass with visiting jazz greats (I saw him with Barney Kessel and Herb Ellis - unforgettable night!); his playing was always soulful and precise - just wonderful...
