Col. Edwards: You speak of solarbonite, but just what is it?

Eros: Take a can of your gasoline. Say this can of gasoline is the sun. Now you spread a thin line of it to a ball, representing the Earth. Now, the gasoline represents the sunlight, the sun particles. Here we saturate the ball with the gasoline, the sunlight. Then we put a flame to the ball. The flame will speedily travel around the Earth, back along the line of gasoline to the can, or the sun itself. It will explode this source, and spread to every place that gasoline, or sunlight, touches. Explode the sunlight here, Gentlemen, and you explode the universe. Explode the sunlight here, and a chain reaction will occur, direct to the sun itself. And to all the planets that sunlight touches. To every planet in the universe. This is why you must be stopped. This is why any means must be used to stop you. In a friendly manner, or as it seems, you want it.

I love clicking on the various links on the top of the front page (I skim through the links whenever I have a little free time, even if I don't have time for commenting).

However, I'm really getting sick and tired of those few blogs that have audio clips (with or without video, relevant or not to the post at hand) which autoplays when you access the page. Audio content should never autoplay.

When The Day After Tomorrow came out, and some people were treating it as if it were a documentary (a real one, not one by Gore or Moore), I liked to refer to Independence Day as Roland Emmerich's most scientifically accurate film.

Repost from last thread...

Running away with the prize for Best Pet Blog, F*ck You, Penguin.

Act quickly, Tiger.

The cunning, evil piglets run to the tiger, smothering her with their small hooves and short snouts. Made weak by the cuteness of the piglets (and undoubtedly aware of the fact that she is only making the situation worse by being in the picture herself), she reaches out her paw, licking her lips, grasping for an errant piglet she can stuff in her mouth. That would really ruin the moment, she thinks to herself, desperate for some way - any way - out of this moment of terrifying cross-species affection. But alas, the piglet turns, just out of the desperate tiger's reach. And as the piglets climb towards the tiger's belly and begin playing with her tail, her moment has passed. All is lost. Fuck you, Piglets..., the tiger thinks to herself, just as she loses consciousness.

We fucking get it, Gazelle

Jesus Christ, Gazelle, talk about overkill. Basically the only thing I know about you is that you get eaten a lot, so I already have a pretty sympathetic view towards you. Then you take this picture where you are standing one way but you bend your head the other way and then look at the camera, which I get, it's all very nice. So what's with all the birds? What, are you running for office? How fucking long must you have had to stand there until you got that many birds in just the right place? YOU LOOK DESPERATE FOR AFFECTION, GAZELLE. No one wants to be forced into feeling like they should like you. You have to do the leg work, Gazelle. Stop taking the easy way out.

Hey Cap'n - I really like Day by Day a lot, but I have to confess that I didn't get that one.

That's why I included the reference link.

The cartoon is a reference to "Ozymandius" by Percy Bysshe Shelley, which is quoted on the base of the statue.

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shatter'd visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamp'd on these lifeless things,
The hand that mock'd them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains: round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

No, Mike Nelson did the Commentary for the Legend release. But I recommend the Wade Williams release for the great documentary Flying Saucers Over Hollywood which covers every aspect of the movie exhaustively.

And it really isn't for everyone. If you're over 30 and have never heard of it then bad movies probably aren't your thing to begin with.

Revealed: the environmental impact of Google searches

Performing two Google searches from a desktop computer can generate about the same amount of carbon dioxide as boiling a kettle for a cup of tea, according to new research.

While millions of people tap into Google without considering the environment, a typical search generates about 7g of CO2 Boiling a kettle generates about 15g. “Google operates huge data centres around the world that consume a great deal of power,” said Alex Wissner-Gross, a Harvard University physicist whose research on the environmental impact of computing is due out soon. “A Google search has a definite environmental impact.”

Puffin hoax revealed!

There's nothing more obnoxious than a fake animal that tries to pass itself off as an authentic member of the animal world. Puffins are maybe the biggest offenders when it comes to this, even going so far as to pretend to take pictures with humans and hang out in places like Iceland where no normal person can confirm that they were really there. (Like Iceland is a real place, anyway. "Björk" is from there!) Take a look at this clearly computer generated motherfucker above. Of course, he tries to blend into the scenery by standing by a rock in some grass, but do you see it? The only shadow is from the rock. IF YOU'RE SO REAL, PUFFIN, WHERE'S YOUR FUCKING SHADOW. Busted, Puffin. Now go back to living inside a fucking 8-year-old girl's head.

I didn't watch the movie, because I'm told it was simply awful.

I toughed it out of about 2 minutes of Archie Bunker and his chair before giving up - this has "suspense" - a real hook.

And I want to know WTF Charles is on about.

For some movies, alcohol (or whatever substance Charles is using) is a prerequisite. My wife and I tried to watch Moulin Rouge on DVD once. We had to stop it and hit the vodka (hard) before we could watch and enjoy the rest of it.

I have watched and listened to the Gazacam for 3 hrs.....this is so surreal...seen the sun rise over an area that I would never even dream of being able to see......listened to bombs going off....gun fire....the droning of the drones and they continued to pass over and over.......and then the ususal city noises of a city awakening and the citizens going off on their usual every day way...roosters crowing and horns honking....people hollering back and forth, loud trucks passing by....and even what sounded like a horse....clodding down the street. The mixture of all this is just so hard to grasp......

Hamas rocket and weapons caches, including rocket launchers, have been discovered in and under mosques, schools and civilian homes, the army says. The Israeli intelligence chief, Yuval Diskin, in a report to the Israeli cabinet, said that the Gaza-based leadership of Hamas was in underground housing beneath the No. 2 building of Shifa Hospital, the largest in Gaza. That allegation cannot be confirmed.

Reminds me of playing "Fireball" when I was a kid. For those who don't get the ref, it is a game where you soak a tennis ball with high-test gasoline, light it, and then throw it at each other. Get the right group, and you can have hours of fun!

"That's unpossible" is a quote from The Simpsons.

It's a perfectly cromulent word. You just need to embiggen your vocabulary.

It's not a frequently used phrased today however.

It was more popular in the days long ago, like those days when I used to take the ferry over to Morganville, which is what we called Shelbyville at the time. The important thing to remember is that I was wearing an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, in those days, the ferry cost a nickel, and nickels had pictures of bees on them. "Give me 5 bees for a quarter," you'd say.

Now, where was I? Oh, yes, I was taking the ferry over to Morganville, which is what we called Shelbyville at the time. The important thing to remember is that I was wearing an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time . . .

Wanto to get an idea of where all this is being shot from?

Go to Google Maps and type in "alaqsa News Agency" in the search box. The place marked "A" is the vantage point from where many of these shots are taken.

Under "More..." turn on photos, and you'll get a better idea of the landscape around it (which will look familiar).

I need to write this when it is fresh in my mind …

As most know who post on this blog …my family were third generation yellow dog southern democrats by tradition until this last two years of this absurd campaign …my family has served in the armed forces of this country in a way which is beyond what most would expect …isn’t it even a shame that I feel the need to even say that to show our allegiance to our country ….but I feel I must because tonight I was accused of the most foul things I could ever imagine …and by a Brooklyn Jewish Democrat …

Am I bad for pointing out that he was a Jewish Brooklyn Democrat …well, I would not do that if he had not told me that I was a White Trash Southern Racist because I did not vote for Obama and I was racist because I did not believe in the redlining going on in the Fannie Mae crap …I asked him how he felt about Hamas and the propaganda being spewed by the main stream media … I am not making this up …
He said Obama would take care of it …and he believed Israel should not bomb Gaza …He is in town (Nashville) doing a documentary on something pertaining to the music biz. …I asked him what he felt was the position Obama would take on Hamas …and as a Jew how could he side with the propaganda being put forth by CNN …he said that Israel needed to stop bombing children …

We talked about a few things …sexism in the campaign …the bailout ….Paulson …Bush …after about 20 minutes he told me there was no way I could have ever been a democrat because I sounded like a total ass republican …I told him I spit on the democrat party after three generations of my family supporting every dogcatcher running for office and voting for him/her just because they were democrat …

I asked what he felt about Hillary … he said he felt the Clintons were the most foul corrupt people ever in government …I asked then why do you support Obama appointing all the Clintonites to positions in Obama administration … He said … well, there are not that many qualified people out there so he had to appoint them …so now I am thinking this guy is totally crazy …and I guess this is what produces documentary in this country ..anyway …

Well, my maturity level kicked in and …I just gave him the finger and walked off …

Thank you for this little space Charles where I can come and vent …where do I go …I am not a hard core republican …I am definitely not a democrat …where is the safe ground …

I am just gonna be my own girl …

Mom's 50th coupled with me not being back for ages and topped with world events teaching me that life is too short as it is, gave me the kick in the pants to get on that plane.

It wasn't restful or relaxing as I had to spent time with more people then days but I have another week to recover before going back to work.

Wow. You know things are bad when you can't find a retail job. :-(

You are a brave soul, and I admire you! Retail work is much harder than it looks...

True!

The newest thing to open on the Strip, just announced that on January 5th, they'd start taking applications online for 12,000 new positions.

By midnight, January 5th, they had already received 15,000 applications! In just the past few days, that has at least doubled.

What you have to keep in mind about Vegas is that it's not just the townspeople losing jobs as in many cities. It's also the multiplyng effect of people in other towns deciding NOT to come to Vegas, too.

One quick note - it won't look EXACTLY like the picture. Earlier this week, the building inspector came by to examine their work, and pointed out that there were installing the rebar incorrectly in one of the buildings.

Upon further inspection, it turns out that the previous 26 floors of this building had their rebar installed in exactly the same way. Without inspection approval, they've decided to start tearing that bulding down, and offering people who had purchased rooms there either refunds or rooms in the other complexes.

Personally, if I had purchased a room in that bad building, I'd take my money back. Why? My first thought would be, "How do I know they didn't make that or other similar mistakes with the other buildings?"

re: #430 gmsc

Right. I know the resort areas are the hardest hit.

Things aren't quite as bad here in Philadelphia/Pennsylvania. The real estate market took a hit in the 8-10% range (as opposed to 20+% I've heard elsewhere) and the area is so heavily diversified (with a huge health care sector) that jobs are still available to the qualified.

The city government finding itself in mega-debt is a problem, however...

It doesn't get much better when it's your own flesh and blood saying that kind of crap (altho' this Christmas was pretty tame, all things considered).

Not too long ago, my mother said I should move to Texas- which coming from her was probably meant to be an insult (why don't you move where all those stupid, reactionary, right-wing, intolerant, gun-toting hicks live).

Curiously, I took it as a compliment (why don't I move to where those proud, independent, hard-working, resourceful, diverse, patriotic, college football-crazy, 2nd Amendment-appreciating Americans live)
