Where's the human rights groups to complain about Hamas and their repeated use of human shields, using kids as props, and child soldiers? The silence is deafening. Israel keeps coming across this throughout Gaza - whether it's schools, residences, mosques, or hospitals. Hamas has turned all of Gaza into one huge trap - and Hamas is more than willing to serve up civilian casualties and claim it's Israel's fault. Hamas turns schools into targets by firing on Israelis from in and around schools.
The media will portray it no differently, even though the blame resides squarely on Hamas.
Cox and Forkum had it right way back in 2006. Palestinian body armor are kids.

Wiring entire buildings to explode is the same trick that was used in the Battle of Fallujah as death traps for the attacking Soldiers and Marines clearing the city house to house. In this case it would have been used to attack Israeli Soldiers directly or as to boost propaganda after scores of children and zoo animals were detonated.

More evidence of the mind set of Hamas with regard to the local populace is seen on a map captured by the IDF on 7 Jan.
This map, confiscated Wednesday (Jan. 7) by IDF paratroopers operating in the north of Gaza, shows how Hamas uses an entire neighborhood, rigging it with explosive devices and putting the entire civilian population at great risk. The map shows the al-Tatraa neighborhood in Gaza City divided into three areas of operation (red, blue and green). The dots on the map indicate where Hamas operatives had planted a variety of IEDs (improvised explosive devices), with the colors indicating the type of IED. Additional marks show sniper positions next to mosques. Next to the entrance of the el-Tawid mosque near to Shauuda Plaza at the top left of the map there is a sniper posting with marking indicating the direction of fire marked on the map. At the bottom center of the map there is a gas station where Hamas planted an IED which, if activated, could cause a very large explosion throughout the neighborhood.

The Parable Of The Foolish Rattlesnakes
Once upon a time, there were two rattlesnakes, a mother and a father. They had a huge brood of baby rattlesnakes, but Mom and Dad rattlesnake were suspicious of the garter snakes who lived nearby. One night they sensed movement so they started biting and biting until the movement ceased.
When the dawn came, Mom and Dad rattlesnake found that they had bitten every one of their children, who lay dead and rotting at the bottom of the nest.
Angered, Mom and Dad rattlesnake vowed to kill the evil garter snakes who had forced this horrible act upon them. They quickly had another brood of babies, but alas, another suspicious movement in the dark brought about the same deadly results.
Moral: Left to their own devices, idiots will remove themselves from the gene pool. The tragedy of the human race is we can't leave dumb enough alone.

We now return to your regularly scheduled programming.
It's extremely easy to get around the "security" of that poll and vote multiple times. If you know a little about proxies, you could do it in a way that was virtually undetectable. What I'm sayin' is: it's a silly internet poll, not a measure of anything real.

I also agree and would like to add that clergy like Cardinal Martino serve the Church very poorly when they make such statements because they are so easily construed, by Catholics and non-Catholics alike, as being Church Doctrine- which they most certainly are not.
Yes.
And it's tiresome to be challenged by people over these statements like that that I do not agree with at all, not one bit, not one iota.
There was a thread somewhere recently where I actually agreed with somebody about something, but no matter how much I explained that, he did not seem to believe it, but kept posting comments asking me how I could think this or that, which were things I didn't think at all!

Muslims try to use that to their advantage. When I was an HR Director, our office once received a large package of pamphlets about "Islam", which we were supposed to distribute to our employees, I guess.

"Social justice" is an amorphous term that has never been adequately defined. It's the vanilla ice cream of right and wrong. It gets thrown around to try and define everything from inadequate health insurance coverage to police shootings.
Catholic bishops and Cardinals toss it out there to try and find an objective explanation as to why the average Palestinian lives in horrid conditions in Gaza. They just can't bring themselves to say "because Hamas is a gang of scumbags."

The final straw for me regarding Catholicism was when I found out that Rome would support 3 illegitimate children per priest, but still refuses to let priests marry. It is OK to break your vows, but not to raise your family publicly. Hypocrisy 101. ( I always believed priests should be allowed to marry. Demanding a human being be celibate is unnatural, and damned near impossible to ask of them, so they have to live a lie, and deny their own children if they wish to continue in their chosen profession. That is cruel punishment for people who wish to dedicate their lives to the service of God and mankind. It is also a HUGE reason the church attracts pedophiles into its ranks. Unfortunately, and understandably, when dealing with the Catholic Church many folks confuse the Message with the messenger and therefore discredit Church teaching with the misdeeds or idiotic statements of some of her ministers. I believe this phenomenon is inspired by Evil as a means to discredit the Church.

re: #111 pbird
Unfortunately they are actually human beings made in the image of G-d, but having given themselves over completely to evil.
G-d gave the best and highest of His creation, the Lightbearer or Lucifer, the ability to choose to do good or evil—for there is no merit, honor nor virtue in doing good if there is no other possibility. Lucifer chose evil. God never created or wished for death. Lucifer, now known as Satan [Hebrew] or Diabolos [Greek] (devil) which means the Accuser because he has given himself over to hate and is continually accusing men and angels of sins before God, hoping to get them condemned or damned to his fate—he has sundered himself from the Lifegiver, G-d, he now lives forever dying. Because his glory was greatest of all creation, his wretched horribleness is now the worst of all. Lucifer hates and envies mankind because God has given man a way to be purified and change his fortunes even if the man ought to be condemned.
These men (Hamas) were created in the image and likeness of God, and though they have the image, that is the ability to creatively think and reason, they have rejected the likeness, the desire to be good and moral and loving. The more they reject, not their Allah, but the true G-d, HaShem, the more they become like Lucifer and live a life of dying. The more they become like Lucifer, the more they surround themselves with death on every side. Even the bonds of familial love and human decency are cast aside as they embrace death for themselves and everyone else.

It's totally out of line, but perfectly typical. People have no compunction about grouping all RC's together because most of us don't bother to file suit or complain to the ACLU when we're "offended". We just ignore the generalizing absolutists and go on doing our good works.
The Catholic Priest scandal involving child molestation was the tipping point (though every statistic will show you that public school teachers and L.L. coaches are about ten times more likely to commit such an offense than a Priest) that allowed closeted bigots to finally vent their hatred on a group that seemed defenseless and un-P.C.

I guess the ancient canons of the church that call for his defrocking are forgotten? I think the ancient rule was, "you are no longer a priest, so marry her and raise your child". If anyone desperately needs a reference for this, I could search though old tomes until I find the canon.

Now, this is interesting.
I posted a link earlier to a story about how George Stephanopoulos asked Obama about prosecuting Bush "crimes". Of course, neither Bush nor any of his senior advisors have been indicted of anything, so the question was oddly phrased, to say the least. The story goes on to point that out, and to also point out that Obama actually answered the question as if it were a reasonable question!
My link has gotten several downdings.
I know there are folks here who are not George Bush fans, but I had no clue there were folks here who would be OK with him being "prosecuted" for "crimes".

Rights group: Israel uses white phosphorus in Gaza
Human Rights Watch said Sunday that Israel's military has fired artillery shells with the incendiary agent white phosphorus into Gaza and a doctor there said the chemical was suspected in the case of 10 burn victims who had skin peeling off their faces and bodies....
The chief doctor at Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza said he treated several victims there with serious burns that might have been caused by phosphorus. He said, however, that he did not have the resources or expertise to say with certainty what caused the injuries.

The fact that the average RC has (at best) an 8th grade understanding of his or her faith also does not help matters. An 8th grade understanding of anything is not going to stand up to the assault of popular culture and entrenched moral relativism.
If Catholics had a better understanding of their Faith and their Church they would be much more able to answer the smears of the bigots and not be intimidated by legitimate criticism.

It was not the number, but the fact that the Vatican ALLOWED this abuse to take place, and by hiding it, and protecting the pedophiles, gave it a thumbs up. Mandy's comment was right on. The stench of hypocrisy is not out of line at all.
My dad was a victim, and my husband damned near became a victim, but was old enough to get away. BTW, the priest who told my 17 year old (at the time) husband that he had a "Svelt" body on a retreat, after providing alcohol, was arrested at the church institution he ran for "Recovering pedophile priests". My husband got up and drove home after that remark, and told me about the incident when we were first dating, 24 years ago. He had thought it was a "Test". I told him then it was an attempted rape. He believes me now.

re: #257 Walter L. Newton
You'll have to search for the Florida case that was addressed about two years ago. If I remember the stats right, 26,000 public school teachers had been dismissed for misconduct and the Court released the fact that 30% of those offenses were sexual in nature. Add up all the Catholic Priests (if you think that ALL Priests are child molesters) in New England and you still don't approach that kind of number.
Of course, the T.U.'s are still suing to keep such stats under wraps, so details are hard to come by. I suggest reading your local paper and comparing how many teachers/coaches are arrested for diddling compared to Priests. The reality of the situation will become clear quite quickly.

Texas chili normally has No beans. It only has to have two ingredients: peppers (chilis) and cummin, although no Texan would ever serve it without meat—beef, that is. Beans were considered a filler that poor people used. Putting beans in chili was considered an advertisement that you were impoverished.

But that was bitter for us too. Would you think it wasn't?
In fact, we faithful and practicing Catholics are also bitter and horrified about all the clergy who were known by the heirarchy to be child molesters, and who were moved from parish to parish.
Our solution? Various things, but for this family, the solution was not to give up on our religion; but to make sure those in charge knew of our dissatisfaction by reducing what we put into the collection plate and giving it elsewhere. Many in our parish did the same thing.

They reassigned them and allowed the victim count to climb unchecked. Sorry, but this takes any credibility the church has, and kills it. I agree the religion was not to blame at all. I blame the human administrators of the religion. When the leaders of anything let something like that happen, the damage to the entity is unavoidable.

re: #260 reine.de.tout
Now, this is interesting.
I posted a link earlier to a story about how George Stephanopoulos asked Obama about prosecuting Bush "crimes". Of course, neither Bush nor any of his senior advisors have been indicted of anything, so the question was oddly phrased, to say the least. The story goes on to point that out, and to also point out that Obama actually answered the question as if it were a reasonable question!
My link has gotten several downdings.
I know there are folks here who are not George Bush fans, but I had no clue there were folks here who would be OK with him being "prosecuted" for "crimes".
The man lost me completely when he "Abandoned the free market principal in order to save the free market". I went from "history will treat him kindly" to "he might get a footnote in history".
So I updinged you just to compensate. If I downdinged a reference to an article or an interview, a lot of undeserving people would lose Karma.

Not at all. Just that Boston was the epicenter of the scandal and it was a 24/7 story here.

Rest assured that 99% of RC's hate what happened, and that 99% of other Religions/organizations are still covering it up in their own ranks.

Indeed. These Plaxicos are gonna do what tonight? Go out get drunk, flash some bling-bling, pimp they ride, listen to some beat-heavy mysogynistic propaganda, and pass out. F*** sports like the bread and circuses that it is. Folks can't tell you which senators received money from Fannie Mae, who the Vice President is, where Iran can be found on a map...but can recite the statistics of their favorite gladitorial NHL team going back to the 60's. And they vote. F*** sports like f*** American Idol, Lost, 24, et too many al.

I left the church long before the pedophile scandal, because of the overwhelming hypocrisy and the astounding ego of a new priest. The pedophile scandal locked it down for me. I believe in God, and still pray to St. Anthony every time I lose my car keys. (It still works). I don't need the Vatican to tell me what is right and what is wrong.

A little humor to lighten the mood.
I tried to post a comment on the Boston Herald Website today in response to this column:
Unbearable Mama Grizzly clawing way to Oval Office
The columnist, Margery Eagan, is unhinged with her hatred of Sarah Palin. Of course, she is unapologetic in her rapture of The One. She also happens to co-host a radio show here in Boston - up against Rush so you can guess what the ratings are.
So I decided to chime in. This comment was rejected:
Old Maid Marge strikes again. Hey, if you're going after people for their accents you may want to listen to a tape of your mealy mouth self on your unbearable radio show. It's like listening to Willy Whistle with a mouth full of rocks.

When the church leaders allow priests to rape children unchecked and with no consequence so as not to sully the religion, The children are indeed victims of that religion, because the powers that be deem the religion more important than a childs life.

I understand and respect your position. Believe me I have had my fair share of frustrations and disappointments with certain members of the clergy. I hope you continue to pray, and I also hope you can find the time to read some of the Catechism since it embodies the Truth that sometimes is ill-represented by the clergy.

Bishop Sheen used to say that he believed there were, at most, only a dozen or so people in the whole world who truly hated the Catholic Church. He also believed that there were many millions of people who hated what they thought was the Catholic Church, but was not.

I'm not going to argue about this. Anyone who doesn't believe that child-rape (or covering it up) is the antithesis of Catholicism doesn't understand Catholicism.
One of the first things I ever learned (and loved) about Catholicism is that it's the people who are the Church. Not the building, not the Book, not the Vatican, just the people.

You misunderstand my position. I do not blame catholics. I blame the Vatican, or the men who represent the Vatican. When children are allowed to be victimized and that is hidden and ignored, for the "good of the religion", those children become victims in the name of that religion.

Israel is using 70mm WP rockets in Gaza, fired from Apache gunships.
Almost every military on the planet uses WP ammo.
Russia complained loudly about the US military using WP in Iraq, yet Russia used massive amounts of WP in Chechnya. China has used WP rounds on civilian protesters inside China as well.
The claims against WP ammo are as fraudulent and one sided as the claims against cluster munitions, mines, and napalm.

As an attempt to end the priest pedophile scandal arguments of
'they let it go on' or 'they covered it up'
After confession the tresspass is forgiven and never held against the person.
Otherwise the practice confession is worthless.
What you should be upset about is that a group of pedophiles took advantage of the system. Not confession and forgivness of sin- the cornerstone of ALL christian churches
