Backlit Saturn

Science | Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 2:54:05 pm PST

A glorious photograph from the Cassini spacecraft, in orbit around Saturn, via APOD. (Credit: Cassini Imaging Team, SSI, JPL, ESA, NASA.)

Explanation: In the shadow of Saturn, unexpected wonders appear. The robotic Cassini spacecraft now orbiting Saturn recently drifted in giant planet’s shadow for about 12 hours and looked back toward the eclipsed Sun. Cassini saw a view unlike any other. First, the night side of Saturn is seen to be partly lit by light reflected from its own majestic ring system. Next, the rings themselves appear dark when silhouetted against Saturn, but quite bright when viewed away from Saturn and slightly scattering sunlight, in the above exaggerated color image. Saturn’s rings light up so much that new rings were discovered, although they are hard to see in the above image. Visible in spectacular detail, however, is Saturn’s E ring, the ring created by the newly discovered ice-fountains of the moon Enceladus, and the outermost ring visible above. Far in the distance, visible on the image left just above the bright main rings, is the almost ignorable pale blue dot of Earth.

Because invasive dental procedures usually get local anaesthetic, as opposed to surgeries, which get general. The same crap goes on, but the patient is a lot more likely to remember it in the dentist's chair.

"Okay," the sheriff drawled, "Gomer, what is 1 and 1?"
"11" he replied.
The sheriff thought to himself, "That's not what I meant, but he's right."
"What two days of the week start with the letter 'T'?"
"Today and tomorrow."
He was again surprised that Gomer supplied a correct answer that he had never thought of himself.
"Now Gomer, listen carefully: Who killed Abraham Lincoln?"
Gomer looked a little surprised himself, then thought really hard for a minute and finally admitted, "I don't know."
"Well, why don't you go home and work on that one for a while?"
So, Gomer wandered over to the pool hall where his pals were waiting to hear the results of the interview. Gomer was exultant.
"It went great! First day on the job and I'm already working on a murder case!"

I used to work for Picker Medical Products, and I did two X-Ray machine installations at V.A. Hospitals (one in Tucson, Arizona, before the building was air conditioned in August!).

I told my wife -- and still mean it -- that if I ever got sick enough to get put in a V.A. hospital, it was a sign I'd be dying soon.

You should stop in at the North Chicago VA, they joining forces with the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, and are doing great things.

The earth is now on the brink of entering another Ice Age, according to a large and compelling body of evidence from within the field of climate science. Many sources of data which provide our knowledge base of long-term climate change indicate that the warm, twelve thousand year-long Holocene period will rather soon be coming to an end, and then the earth will return to Ice Age conditions for the next 100,000 years.

I'm not dissing VA hospitals (but I can see how you would get that) ... all the patients I saw didn't have long to live. I think they were "terminal cases", and no for-profit organization would accept them any longer.

Two girlfriends were speeding down the highway at well over a 100 miles per hour.
"Hey," asked the brunette at the wheel, "see any cops following us?"
The blonde turned around for a long look. "As a matter of fact, I do."
"Oh, NOOO!" yelled the brunette. "Are his flashers on?"
The blonde turned around again. "Yup...nope...yup...nope...yup..."

And I was angered that any country would so shamelessly parade and display their dead and wounded in such a manner.

And I was angered that any government and people would deliberately and with malice aforethought put those same people in the direct line of fire in every attempt to produce the results of those same photographs.

And I am proud that Israel will not do the same.

Who was it said "be there the firstust with the mostest"? Nathan Bedford Forrest? Whoever said it was right in spades.

Although attributed to Forrest by the New York Times, the phrase was apparently "get there first with the most men." (Probably "git thar fust with the most men" in dialect.)

According to Wikipedia, historian Bruce Catton says:

"Do not, under any circumstances whatever, quote Forrest as saying 'fustest' and 'mostest'. He did not say it that way, and nobody who knows anything about him imagines that he did."

I hate the media. Now that the One has been elected, it's safe to say something nice about GWB. I've seen a few positive stories in the last week. Cowards wouldn't print this stuff until they were sure their man was in.

CAPE TOWN, South Africa - In her AIDS-scarred South African township, Sweetness Mzolisa leads a chorus of praise for George W. Bush that echoes to the deserts of Namibia, the hills of Rwanda and the villages of Ethiopia.

Like countless Africans, Mzolisa looks forward to Barack Obama becoming America's first black president Jan 20. But — like countless Africans — Mzolisa says she will always be grateful to Bush for his war on AIDS, which has helped to treat more than 2 million Africans, support 10 million more, and revitalize the global fight against the disease.

"It has done a lot for the people of South Africa, for the whole of the African continent," says Mzolisa, a feisty mother of seven. "It has changed so many people's lives, saved so many people's lives."

And of course entertainers wouldn't dare give Bush a compliment without making sure to give a criticism as well. Wouldn't be proper. Who gives a shit what they think anyway?

Some critics, like rockers-turned-advocates Bono and Bob Geldof, have become admirers.

"The Bush regime has been divisive ... created bitterness — but not here in Africa. Here, his administration has saved millions of lives," Geldof wrote in Time Magazine as he accompanied Bush on an Africa trip last February.

"The administration and Bush himself deserve a lot more credit than they received for getting this job done," says Josh Ruxin, assistant professor of public health at Columbia University.

There's a little more to it than that. People who are heavilly into the Kabbalah tend to go in the same direction of ritual magick. The efficacy for that seems lacking. The best description of ritual magic I've ever heard was by AE Waite who opined that ritual magick basically involved the conjuration and subjugation of Demionic forces through complex rituals that would only work if God exists and He is a merciful, loving god. Thus if the protections were directly from God, then surely one comes to the understanding that anything done through magick could be secured with simple prayer. If ritual magick is bunk, then this concpt may not bother you, concider what it means to Believers. They are calling on evil in a manner that they won't be protected from that which they raise. This would make Magick a singularly poor choice for use in doing, well, everything.

It was a very telling critique of the groups like Golden Dawn.

I think that is more the people who follow the Kabbalah center's version, which is where Madonna goes. I find it to be sort of a new-age version.
True Kabbalists (of which I cannot claim myself; I know little) are much more quiet and much more sophisticated. And do not actually use it much. The biggest known use was the Golem.

I've got a 90mm Meade reflector that does a pretty good job, but if you know a friend with a bigger "light bucket" you might even be able to see the Cassini division.

Despite Madonna dabbling in a version of Kabbalah for celebrities she never professed to follow Judaism as a religion. She has issues with organized religion, or organized anything except consumption IMHO. Not the kind of thing I follow but I thought she and her trained house rabbi spiritualist have parted company.

Kabbalah is a Jewish tradition but it is not on a canonical level with other texts and practices. It draws from the penchant for numerology that every rabbi likes to play with. Often this is used to highlight a service as a sort of intellectual tour de force or party game. In Hebrew there are no separate symbols for numbers, therefore letters do double duty. For example the word for "life" is chai and the hebrew letters for chai equal the number 18 so a traditional lucky gift would have a value of 18. This allows all sorts of by play to find the hidden meanings of combinations. Kabbalists combined this with meditation and similar spiritual exercises. Usually this is all harmless.

Compare Jewish mystical movements with the Islamic. If the Shia Twelver movement was like the Jewish equivalents (Hasidim or Kabbalah) then the beloved spiritual leader would climb out of his well and lead everybody in a round of dancing. To be fair in some some forms of Sunni Sufism there is dancing. In Imasmadasahatters Imam in the Well cult the magic man climbs out and everybody dies.

Just got back from the Minnesota Stand with Israel rally in St Louis Park (just west of Minneapolis). May write more tomorrow, but a few notes:

A fairly large anti-Israel contingnent was on the road in. I have to say this about Minnesota Israel bashers...they have balls. Every Friday they protest in near a synaguge in St Paul, with swasitikas on their signs.

Very large pro-Israel turnout. I would estimate about 1000 in the room (at the Jewish Community Center) with many more who standing outside the room (couldn't get in).
Much security around. We had to leave out jackets outside the area, but one wackjob tried to get in. He couldn't make into the room, but somehow smuggled in a sound system and started screaming anti-Israel things from just outside the main room. He was quickly removed.

Many politicians, Republican and Democrat, were there. Mostly Republican. Both Norm Coleman and Al Franken spoke. Crazy Al was the only one to interject partison politics into the event, with some cuts on President Bush. This fuck is going to be an embarrassment to Minnesota.
One of the best speakers was Congresslady Bachmann.

Keith Ellison did not show up. Imagine that.

Hubby is a MIT EE undergrad. After much tinkering, He built a circular coglike release that grabs into a groove cut out in the latch bolt. It runs every 24 hours on the face of a rotational sprinkler timer(battery operated) to unlock the hatch door. The poop hatch door then has a gas sprung, solar (heat) powered hatch opener. Usually, though, the chicken and guineas just force their way out the hatch door, once they hear that bolt latch slide open.

Dr. Evil: The details of my life are quite inconsequential... very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds- pretty standard really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum... it's breathtaking- I highly suggest you try it.

It's an extremely serious and complex approach to Jewish mysticism that's hundreds of years old (at least) and has produced an incredible heritage of ideas, not to mentions contributions to the traditional Jewish liturgy and the beliefs of most if not all hassidic sects, including Chabad. Hardly whackjob and to put it in the same sentence as scientology is just way off base.

Thanks for that. Gee, that was the days when a good keyboard player really meant something.

Saw these guys twice, once on this tour at the DAR Constitution Hall in Washington DC (this was the 2nd time I saw them) in '76 and was only about 5 rows from the front. My favorite part of the first time I saw them at the Capitol Center in Largo MD was when Livgren and Walsh (gtr/keys/synths, vox/keys/synths/perc, respectively) traded synth solos during "Incommudro - Hymn for the Atman", STILL my favorite Kansas tune. For whatever reason, I really tended to like the tunes where the A.R.P. String Ensemble was featured (I'm also a Mellotron nut...). There are still alot of good bands with GREAT keyboardists in them, but not that you would know it in today's corporate rock environment; you gotta go independent to hear them any more. F*ck the suits taking over rock music and the radio stations!

My son used to wear my concert T-shirt from the 1976 Kansas tour (the one with the Song For America artwork on it) to school until I guess it finally fell apart. This was about three years ago. I need to find a copy of that album cover to post in my office next to some of the other classic rock albums I have posted there (ELP, Yes, JM-Jarre, Greenslade, Tangerine Dream, etc.)

Oh,yeah, all of these charletons would bilk big bucks out of wealthy customers through many different services (i.e. casting spells or removing the same, or communicating with the dead).

They're no more dispicable than Al Gore, less really. Snakeoil salesmen trafficing in Black Magic could have a placebo effect, I'd guess, so they would feel better afterward. With no real magick involved in the transaction at all.

Al Gore jets from town to town to bring his eco-prophesy of doom to the Great Unwashed Masses, preaching the holiness of Carbon Neutral, and capable of absolving you of your eco-sins through Carbon Credits.

"We're doomed! But if you'll call that number on your screen and pledge carbon credits we won't be as doomed."

Speaking of AlGore the forecast here in upstate NY is for -7 later this week.

That is cold.

Well, if DU is any indication, the blame will be foisted upon Obama. Let me share an excerpt *clears throat*

Obama is center-right, white-bread politician. He promises what he has to promise to get elected and does what he has to do to stay in office. Look for him to abandon those who put him in office in favor of the insiders who can keep him there. - Joe Steel

so incorporate them into the REAL legal system, or release them but keeping the gulag open, just 'cause, is not a good way to start the change. - ixion

it should be done now, not 3 to six months from now we've held innocent people without charges for 7+ years. That's a whopping load of crap, and should be dealt with immediately, not whenever someone finally decides to get around to it. - ixion

and more, if you dare.

BWAHAHAHAHA

there's something very very different this time round.

during the Hez war, most English, including those on the right, were against it. others supported it - but with caveats.. it wasnt 100 per cent.

this time round , with Hamas, its VERY different. as an example , two of the top conservative bloggers in the UK have come out 100 per cent behind Israels actions.

Huh? I thought West Wing did that...

West Wing was the perfect setup. A compassionate minded completely tough president that would offer "the change", and if you think back, a lot of people believed he was a president!

24 (Jack Bauer) is the figure that "takes care" of all the nasty stuff that we can't talk about in public. Jack responds to threats that will destroy the entire country, and never sees the light of public scrutiny.

The series fills the hole, and my guess is that by voting for Obama, supporters knew "everything would be OK", and that we really wouldn't be in danger, because there's good old Jack Bauer looking out for our backsides.

These idiots think Jack Bauer is real, just like they thought "West Wing" wasn't really a series.

Well, look; to the extent that t.v. and/or movies have "taught" the public that "you shouldn't vote against a candidate because of race"... well, good for them.

Goblin vs. Hobgoblin:

"In The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, Hobgoblins are a menacing, larger and stronger form of goblins. Tolkien later remarked in a letter that through further study of folklore he had subsequently learned that "the statement that hobgoblins were 'a larger kind' [of goblins] is the reverse of the original truth"."

How was opening weekend?

Fine for the the theatre, nasty for my girlfriend. Friday night, she was returning a rental car (her car was in the shop) and she drove it right off of a highway entrance ramp, flipped it 4 times, END FOR END.

No, not drinking (she doesn't drink), not drugs, just crappy night vision and I bet she was on her cell phone.

She barely had a bruise or scratch on her, except she had a compression fracture of the second lumbar. No health insurance, there goes her job, probably, and a whole lot of other problems will come out of this.

And except for logistical support, I can't afford to "chip in" here.

If you have answered yes to my questions, she qualifies for FMLA and has 12 weeks of job protected leave *unless she was subject to some sort of layoff that would have affected her had she continued work, or she was facing termination prior to this event*

I don't believe Colorado has additional leave protection under a state statute, but you may want to check that out, too. State leave laws tend to be more generous that FMLA.

Also, because this happened in a car accident, she may want to look into her policy as that might cover much of this.

Thanks for this info. I will check into these things. It was a rental car, I don't know if she had purchased extra insurance on it, but I suspect she couldn't have rented it unless she had proper personal car insurance.

The only reason I mention she will probably loose her job is it's a retail sales job in a jewelry store at Denver International Airport and I can imagine that they wouldn't think twice about finding some way to get her out of the way.

This damn store will fire people if they have a bad day from coming off a good day.

Mine and my family's signatures are all on Cassini on a laser disk. We did this back in the 90's before Cassini launched. To have a part of us out there, where Cassini is taking these photos, is awe inspiring.

An elderly client of mine back in the early 90s up in Washington was a retired machinist. He had made some of the parts for the Lunar Rovers. He was humble yet proud, in his awe, that some of the things he had made with his own hands were now on the Moon.

I had never considered the concept before he spoke of it. And now you - yes ... Awe inspiring.

Star Wars is on SPIKE TV again.

Spike TV really honks me off, 'cause:
1) They frequently -- and without notice- change their schedule. Makes me (and TiVo) nuts. Me and the lovely Mrs. least had never seen SW II: The Attack of The Clones, and we still haven't seen it all, 'cause Spike changed the flippin' schedule and TiVo stopped recording with a lot of movie still to go.
2) Spike panders to males with a mid-teen intelligence and hormone level (with a MAJOR emphasis on the hormone level).
Kind of a Larry Flynt (before he got shot in the spine) network.

Already the environmental nazis are scoring. Worrisome, indeed. What's the price tag on this? No mention. Any dissent is going to be considered breaking a promise to the Messiah.

WASHINGTON – In a rare Sunday session, the Senate advanced legislation that would set aside more than 2 million acres in nine states as wilderness. Majority Democrats assembled more than enough votes to overcome GOP stalling tactics in an early showdown for the new Congress.

Republicans complained that Democrats did not allow amendments on the massive bill, which calls for the largest expansion of wilderness protection in 25 years. But Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and other Democrats said the bill — a holdover from last year — was carefully written and included measures sponsored by both Republicans and Democrats.

By a 66-12 vote, with only 59 needed to limit debate, lawmakers agreed to clear away procedural hurdles despite partisan wrangling that had threatened pledges by leaders to work cooperatively as the new Obama administration takes office. Senate approval is expected later this week. Supporters hope the House will follow suit.
...

Coburn and several other Republicans complained that bill was loaded with pet projects and prevented development of oil and gas on federal lands, which they said would deepen the nation's dependence on foreign oil.

Environmental groups said the bill set the right tone for the new Congress.

"By voting to protect mountains and pristine wildlands, Congress is starting out on the right foot," said Christy Goldfuss of Environment America, an advocacy group. "This Congress is serious about protecting the environment and the outstanding lands that Americans treasure."

My youngest calls me a cynic, but I like to think it is more of a dark humor sort of thing. And after years of therapy, I'm feeling much better now...

And really, I'm always Hungry for a good pun. If even if it takes a Hungry Hungry Hippo to fill it.

Yes, it was good. The show was able to strike a good note. I do think Bauer is wrong about the need for disclosure. In matters of Intel, I'm of the opinion that a "two worlds" approach is needed. Full disclosure would require a re-writing of laws that is not possible right now.

Well, this is the strangest war I've ever listened to.

Strange buzzing all night.

Roosters crowing at random times, just out of the blue. Where are they?

Occasional sounds of fighting, with flashes way off in the distance.

Not sure what I'm waiting for, but I can't turn it off.
