Backlit Saturn

Science | Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 2:54:05 pm PST

A glorious photograph from the Cassini spacecraft, in orbit around Saturn, via APOD. (Credit: Cassini Imaging Team, SSI, JPL, ESA, NASA.)

Explanation: In the shadow of Saturn, unexpected wonders appear. The robotic Cassini spacecraft now orbiting Saturn recently drifted in giant planet’s shadow for about 12 hours and looked back toward the eclipsed Sun. Cassini saw a view unlike any other. First, the night side of Saturn is seen to be partly lit by light reflected from its own majestic ring system. Next, the rings themselves appear dark when silhouetted against Saturn, but quite bright when viewed away from Saturn and slightly scattering sunlight, in the above exaggerated color image. Saturn’s rings light up so much that new rings were discovered, although they are hard to see in the above image. Visible in spectacular detail, however, is Saturn’s E ring, the ring created by the newly discovered ice-fountains of the moon Enceladus, and the outermost ring visible above. Far in the distance, visible on the image left just above the bright main rings, is the almost ignorable pale blue dot of Earth.

Because invasive dental procedures usually get local anaesthetic, as opposed to surgeries, which get general. The same crap goes on, but the patient is a lot more likely to remember it in the dentist's chair.

The local sheriff was looking for a deputy, so Gomer - who was not exactly the sharpest nail in the bucket went in to try out for the job.
"Okay," the sheriff drawled, "Gomer, what is 1 and 1?"
"11" he replied.
The sheriff thought to himself, "That's not what I meant, but he's right."
"What two days of the week start with the letter 'T'?"
"Today and tomorrow."
He was again surprised that Gomer supplied a correct answer that he had never thought of himself.
"Now Gomer, listen carefully: Who killed Abraham Lincoln?"
Gomer looked a little surprised himself, then thought really hard for a minute and finally admitted, "I don't know."
"Well, why don't you go home and work on that one for a while?"
So, Gomer wandered over to the pool hall where his pals were waiting to hear the results of the interview. Gomer was exultant.
"It went great! First day on the job and I'm already working on a murder case!"

I used to work for Picker Medical Products, and I did two X-Ray machine installations at V.A. Hospitals (one in Tucson, Arizona, before the building was air conditioned in August!).

I told my wife -- and still mean it -- that if I ever got sick enough to get put in a V.A. hospital, it was a sign I'd be dying soon.

The earth is now on the brink of entering another Ice Age, according to a large and compelling body of evidence from within the field of climate science. Many sources of data which provide our knowledge base of long-term climate change indicate that the warm, twelve thousand year-long Holocene period will rather soon be coming to an end, and then the earth will return to Ice Age conditions for the next 100,000 years.

I'm not dissing VA hospitals (but I can see how you would get that) ... all the patients I saw didn't have long to live. I think they were "terminal cases", and no for-profit organization would accept them any longer.

Two girlfriends were speeding down the highway at well over a 100 miles per hour.
"Hey," asked the brunette at the wheel, "see any cops following us?"
The blonde turned around for a long look. "As a matter of fact, I do."
"Oh, NOOOO!" yelled the brunette. "Are his flashers on?"
The blonde turned around again. "Yup...nope...yup...nope...yup..."

Yeah, NASA has been paying for their own success for so long that I could see the Obamessiah killing nearly all of its funding as a "cost cutting" measure. IIRC, Obama has said the he will "fight the weaponization of space" which is High Bullshit for "give the high ground to the Russians and the Chinese". Who was it said "be there the firstust with the mostest"? Nathan Bedford Forrest? Whoever said it was right in spades. We got there, and then quit trying. That can't be blamed on the Republicans or the Democrats, but to both parties who are both culpable for this failure. Some things simply should be done. Any upside may be a long time in coming, too long for capital investors to be willing to pony up.

While I'm a proponent of smaller government, there some tasks that require the broader support of the State to be successful. Space travel and warfare are two of the more obvious cases. Can you (or anyone) see WWII being fought by cadres of mercenary fighters (the lowest bidders, 'natch)? Space travel is the same kind of thing. The nation as a whole reaped manifold benefits from the Space Program. It is just the average person doesn't really have the information in hand to figure out the benefits because so many of them were byproducts of the space program, so their provenance was not immediately obvious.

I hate the media. Now that the One has been elected, it's safe to say something nice about GWB. I've seen a few positive stories in the last week. Cowards wouldn't print this stuff until they were sure their man was in.

CAPE TOWN, South Africa - In her AIDS-scarred South African township, Sweetness Mzolisa leads a chorus of praise for George W. Bush that echoes to the deserts of Namibia, the hills of Rwanda and the villages of Ethiopia.

Like countless Africans, Mzolisa looks forward to Barack Obama becoming America's first black president Jan 20. But — like countless Africans — Mzolisa says she will always be grateful to Bush for his war on AIDS, which has helped to treat more than 2 million Africans, support 10 million more, and revitalize the global fight against the disease.

"It has done a lot for the people of South Africa, for the whole of the African continent," says Mzolisa, a feisty mother of seven. "It has changed so many people's lives, saved so many people's lives."

And of course entertainers wouldn't dare give Bush a compliment without making sure to give a criticism as well. Wouldn't be proper. Who gives a shit what they think anyway?

Some critics, like rockers-turned-advocates Bono and Bob Geldof, have become admirers.

"The Bush regime has been divisive ... created bitterness — but not here in Africa. Here, his administration has saved millions of lives," Geldof wrote in Time Magazine as he accompanied Bush on an Africa trip last February.

"The administration and Bush himself deserve a lot more credit than they received for getting this job done," says Josh Ruxin, assistant professor of public health at Columbia University.

There's a little more to it than that. People who are heavilly into the Kabbalah tend to go in the same direction of ritual magick. The efficacy for that seems lacking. The best description of ritual magic I've ever heard was by AE Waite who opined that ritual magick basically involved the conjuration and subjugation of Demionic forces through complex rituals that would only work if God exists and He is a merciful, loving god. Thus if the protections were directly from God, then surely one comes to the understanding that anything done through magick could be secured with simple prayer. If ritual magick is bunk, then this concpt may not bother you, concider what it means to Believers. They are calling on evil in a manner that they won't be protected from that which they raise. This would make Magick a singularly poor choice for use in doing, well, everything.

It was a very telling critique of the groups like Golden Dawn.

I think that is more the people who follow the Kabbalah center's version, which is where Madonna goes. I find it to be sort of a new-age version.
True Kabbalists (of which I cannot claim myself; I know little) are much more quiet and much more sophisticated. And do not actually use it much. The biggest known use was the Golem.

Despite Madonna dabbling in a version of Kabbalah for celebrities she never professed to follow Judaism as a religion. She has issues with organized religion, or organized anything except consumption IMHO. Not the kind of thing I follow but I thought she and her trained house rabbi spiritualist have parted company.

Kabbalah is a Jewish tradition but it is not on a canonical level with other texts and practices. It draws from the penchant for numerology that every rabbi likes to play with. Often this is used to highlight a service as a sort of intellectual tour de force or party game. In Hebrew there are no separate symbols for numbers, therefore letters do double duty. For example the word for "life" is chai and the hebrew letters for chai equal the number 18 so a traditional lucky gift would have a value of 18. This allows all sorts of by play to find the hidden meanings of combinations. Kabbalists combined this with meditation and similar spiritual exercises. Usually this is all harmless.

Compare Jewish mystical movements with the Islamic. If the Shia Twelver movement was like the Jewish equivalents (Hasidim or Kabbalah) then the beloved spiritual leader would climb out of his well and lead everybody in a round of dancing. To be fair in some some forms of Sunni Sufism there is dancing. In Imasmadasahatters Imam in the Well cult the magic man climbs out and everybody dies.

Just got back from the Minnesota Stand with Israel rally in St Louis Park (just west of Minneapolis). May write more tomorrow, but a few notes:

A fairly large anti-Israel contingnent was on the road in. I have to say this about Minnesota Israel bashers.....they have balls. Every Friday they protest in near a synaguge in St Paul, with swasitikas on their signs.

Very large pro-Israel turnout. I would estimate about 1000 in the room (at the Jewish Community Center) with many more who standing outside the room (couldn't get in).
Much security around. We had to leave out jackets outside the area, but one wackjob tried to get in. He couldn't make into the room, but somehow smuggled in a sound system and started screaming anti-Israel things from just outside the main room. He was quickly removed.

Many politicians, Republican and Democrat, were there. Mostly Republican. Both Norm Coleman and Al Franken spoke. Crazy Al was the only one to interject partison politics into the event, with some cuts on President Bush. This fuck is going to be an embarrassment to Minnesota.
One of the best speakers was Congresslady Bachmann.

Keith Ellison did not show up. Imagine that.

Hubby is a MIT EE undergrad. After much tinkering, He built a circular coglike release that grabs into a groove cut out in the latch bolt. It runs every 24 hours on the face of a rotational sprinkler timer(battery operated) to unlock the hatch door. The poop hatch door then has a gas sprung, solar (heat) powered hatch opener. Usually, though, the chicken and guineas just force their way out the hatch door, once they hear that bolt latch slide open.

Dr. Evil: The details of my life are quite inconsequential... very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds- pretty standard really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum... it's breathtaking- I highly suggest you try it.

It's an extremely serious and complex approach to Jewish mysticism that's hundreds of years old (at least) and has produced an incredible heritage of ideas, not to mentions contributions to the traditional Jewish liturgy and the beliefs of most if not all hassidic sects, including Chabad. Hardly whackjob and to put it in the same sentence as scientology is just way off base.

re: #69 Walter L. Newton

Thanks for that. Gee, that was the days when a good keyboard player really meant something.

Saw these guys twice, once on this tour at the DAR Constitution Hall in Washington DC (this was the 2nd time I saw them) in '76 and was only about 5 rows from the front. My favorite part of the first time I saw them at the Capitol Center in Largo MD was when Livgren and Walsh (gtr/keys/synths, vox/keys/synths/perc, respectively) traded synth solos during "Incommudro - Hymn for the Atman", STILL my favorite Kansas tune. For whatever reason, I really tended to like the tunes where the A.R.P. String Ensemble was featured (I'm also a Mellotron nut...). There are still alot of good bands with GREAT keyboardists in them, but not that you would know it in today's corporate rock environment; you gotta go independent to hear them any more. F*ck the suits taking over rock music and the radio stations!

My son used to wear my concert T-shirt from the 1976 Kansas tour (the one with the Song For America artwork on it) to school until I guess it finally fell apart. This was about three years ago. I need to find a copy of that album cover to post in my office next to some of the other classic rock albums I have posted there (ELP, Yes, JM-Jarre, Greenslade, Tangerine Dream, etc.)

Well, if DU is any indication, the blame will be foisted upon Obama. Let me share an excerpt *clears throat*

Obama is center-right, white-bread politician. He promises what he has to promise to get elected and does what he has to do to stay in office. Look for him to abandon those who put him in office in favor of the insiders who can keep him there. - Joe Steel

so incorporate them into the REAL legal system, or release them but keeping the gulag open, just 'cause, is not a good way to start the change. - ixion

it should be done now, not 3 to six months from now we've held innocent people without charges for 7+ years. That's a whopping load of crap, and should be dealt with immediately, not whenever someone finally decides to get around to it. - ixion

and more, if you dare.
