I read the book, IMHO terrible. A good techno/historical/adventure story is one where you have 99 percent facts and only play with once percent of the facts to make the story work.

re: #7 doppelganglander
Question of the day: What is the best way to ensure I spend January 20th in complete oblivion?
You wanna ease into it: here's my suggestion:
You'll need the following items:
1) A handle (1.74 l) of gin. Don't cheap out with the crappy house brand. Go with a reliable, proven gin. London dry gin is perfectly acceptable, but if you can get your hands on a real Geneva gin, don't hesitate to take the plunge.
2) At least 4 liters of ginger ale. Brand doesn't matter much here, just make sure it pair with your gin, i.e., if drinking a dry gin, get Schweppes, but have a dry ginger ale to pair with your Geneva gin.
3) A bottle of Angostura bitters.
Instructions:
In a highball glass, place a small quantity of ice. Two dashes of bitters is the minimum, but don't put more than four or five in there, or you'll kill the gin. Now, pour in about two fingers of gin. Swirl gently till the gin is slightly pink, then top with ginger ale.
Drink up, and keep drinking til you're out of ginger ale. At that point, switch over to pink gin, which is just gin and bitters on the rocks. Repeat as necessary.
helped me get thru Clinton.

Damn, I can't back up what I said, because I can't find the novel now. I read it in the last year, and I have no idea why it's not in my small collection, unless I gave it to someone.
I have read SO many historical books about the Templars that I remember when I read this, I was bothered by the tweaking of the historical facts just to make the story work.

I watched President Bush's last Press Conference today. He seemed almost giddy, bet he's glad to get the fudge out of there.
I watched an interview last night with HW Bush and W Bush in the Oval Office.
The question was about the differing opinions on respect for the actual Oval Office, and about how HW had never, ever entered without a jacket and tie. W said that he felt the same way and could only think of twice he came into the office without a tie.
The funny part was the look of shock and disapproval that quickly passed over HW's face upon hearing there were two occasions when W did NOT wear a tie.
But why didn't the interviewer come out and say what he meant. "Neither of you ever had sex with employees in here, right?"

The attack on New York was not surprising, since the policy has led the West in recent decades. I am upset over the terrorist attack, but is equally upset over the suffering which the United States has created. It is in this context 5000 dead people must be seen. If the U.S. government has a legitimate right to bomb and kill civilians in Iraq, they have also suppressed a moral right to attack the United States with the weapons they had to create. Dead civilians is the same whether they are Americans, Palestinians or Iraqis, "said surgeon and professor Mads Gilbert.

Run and hide. It will not be pretty. What a hell of a mess the Big dig in Boston was. It was supposed to cost millions, then they said it was $15 billion. Two months ago, they said they had calculated interest incorrectly, and the cost doubled to $30 Billion. Thank you for writing and for calling to my attention the claim by the Little Green Footballs blog that it was the first to discover that the photo of the Iranian missile test had been faked.
I inquired further into this matter, and here is what I found: According to Patrick Witty, the photo editor I quoted in Sunday's public editor column, the photo in question came into the system at The Times at 12:01:29 p.m. on July 9. It was subsequently published on the newspaper's Web site, and Witty said he planned to use it in the next morning's printed newspaper. But he said that something struck him as unusual about the picture -- it was just too perfect -- so he opened it in Photoshop and determined that it was a fake. He said he notified the Web photo editor at about 4 p.m. to take the picture down immediately and then went into the news meeting, in progress, to tell the photo director that the picture was a fraud and shouldn't be used in the next day's paper.
Witty said he called AFP at about 6 p.m. to tell them the picture was not genuine, but the wire service refused to send out a correction. The Times published a story about the fake the next morning.
Looking at screen grabs from nytimes.com, my assistant determined that the photo and an accompanying story were posted on the site at 3:13 p.m. on July 9. By 4:31 p.m., the photo was gone. According to the Little Green Footballs site, its story about the fake photo was posted at 6:13:47 PDT on July 9, which would be 9:13 p.m., New York time, or not quite five hours after the photo had been removed from The Times's site. Witty said he was not aware of the posting by Little Green Footballs, and the time stamps verify his statement.
I've encountered a number of these claims before by bloggers. As you know, the Web is a huge universe that is virtually impossible for any single news organization to monitor. Sometimes stories break in more than one place at a time, and one originating site is not aware that information it has published has appeared elsewhere at roughly the same time. In this case, I think it is pretty clear that The Times took corrective action on the photo, based on its own independent analysis, long before Little Green Footballs published its account.
I hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Clark Hoyt

DoJ files suit over voter intimidation
Election Journal has the story. The DoJ has filed suit against the New Black Panther party to stop them from engaging in voter intimidation in the futureToday, Election Journal confirmed that that one of the named parties is actually a Committee Member of the local Democratic organization and was certified by the local Democratic Party as a poll-worker.
That’s right. The Philadelphia Democratic Party has been implicated in voter intimidation, and the DoJ’s Civil Rights Division has filed suit against it. And the media ignores it. Why? I’ll let you figure that out.

...The deal struck by the wide-eyed incoming Obama administration is that the list of donors to the Clinton Foundation will be reviewed once every year and that only the new donations from foreign states—which already include an extraordinarily large number from Gulf sheikdoms—will be scrutinized by administration lawyers. How would we react if we read that this was the rule for the Vladimir Putin government, say, or former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder's regime in Germany? Before me, for example, is the report of a pledge of $100 million to the Clinton Foundation's Clinton Giustra Sustainable Growth Initiative by a set of companies based in Vancouver and known as the Lundin Group. The ostensible purpose of this mind-boggling contribution is stated in the usual vacuous terms of "sustainable local economies," chiefly in Africa. All I know for sure about the Lundin Group is that it does quite a lot of business in Sudan. And all I can think to ask—as perhaps some senator might think to ask—is why such a big corporate interest doesn't just donate the money directly, rather than distributing it through the offices of an outfit run by a seasoned ex-presidential influence-peddler. What do they and the other donors suppose they are getting for their money? A good feeling?

Via NRO on-line:
As I watched President Bush's final tango with reporters this morning, I was reminded of how Chicago Sun-Times columnist Carol Marin described President-elect Obama's press conferences thus far:
"As ferociously as we march like villagers with torches against Blagojevich, we have been, in the true spirit of the Bizarro universe, the polar opposite with the president-elect. Deferential, eager to please, prepared to keep a careful distance.
The Obama news conferences tell that story, making one yearn for the return of the always-irritating Sam Donaldson to awaken the slumbering press to the notion that decorum isn't all it's cracked up to be.
The press corps, most of us, don't even bother raising our hands any more to ask questions because Obama always has before him a list of correspondents who've been advised they will be called upon that day."
How long will the Obama-friendly press corps, no matter how "deferential" and "eager to please," tolerate such tight management?

Ehud Olmert is an absolute dick. He publicly bragged that he circumvented Condoleeza Rice and got GWB to overrule her on the UN proposal made by Rice. This is beyond stupid for two main reasons.
1. It feeds into every Jew hating, Israel bashing conspiracy theory that claims the Israelis have control of US foreign policy. It gets no worse than that.
2. It puts the next female Secretary of State (who may or may not be as friendly to Israel as the one Olmert just screwed ) on notice that she cannot trust Israelis to respect her authority. That is pretty bad.
Olmert wanted to show the Israeli public he was a macho guy who could go around anyone he wanted to in order to reach the POTUS. What an asshat! All he did was create mistrust of his country at a time they need the trust of the US public more than ever. I could starngle that MF.

My only brush with greatness like that was when I called in to Howie (woulda been about '95 or so) and asked his guess, a former bookmaker, how a young guy could get his foot in the door in this exciting business. Turns out, it's kinda a union deal, so, no go there.
Did sit in on a broadcast of the David Brudnoy show once; he did his show from his condo on Comm. ave. Most civilized thing I'd attended in a while; had some lady on talking about her book about the brothels in NM; drank very good scotch and smoked good cigars the whole time.

There are probably people who currently favor Israel that could be convinced they're wrong if Olmert's idiocy is pounded home enough. Most people are uninformed and subject to the influence of their friends.
I would say they need to have a spine and realize that leaders of nations and nations themselves don't always do the smartest things. Heck look at the US. We just elected a completely unqualified man to be president. You can convince me HE is wrong on the issues but you can't convince me that this country is founded on wrong principles. Folks may balk at Omert's tactics but the core Israel supporters will ALWAYS acknowledge the right if Israel to exist regardless of the leadership.

Another victory for free speech in the UK.....
Ofcom: Atkinson's bible spoof was not offensive
Atkinson delivered the sketch as if reciting from the bible when he described Jesus turning water into wine, describing the event as if it was a magic trick.
It included the lines: "And they said unto the Lord:'How the hell did you do that?' And inquired of him: 'Do you do children's parties?' And the Lord said: 'No.' But the servants did press him, saying: 'Go on, give us another one'."
Viewers complained that as the monologue continued, Atkinson described Jesus making a white rabbit appear and sawing a woman in half, adding that when the Romans saw his miracles, "they absolutely crucified him."
The complainants considered the sketch to be offensive and blasphemous, while some questioned whether a similar sketch would be permissible if the subject had been another religion, such as Islam.

"We are a [Muslim] nation who believes in the Hidden, and you [Muslim] traitors don't believe. We believe in the Almighty Allah and you [Muslim traitors] believe in America and Israel. We believe that Allah, may He be Exalted, sent His soldiers against America in many places in the world."

Just about anything will be held against them and will convince those without the courage of their convictions to waiver in their support. We live in a time when it is imperative that everyone becomes as well informed as possible. And when I go to "start" and initiate the logoff/shutdown function, that button is also frozen. So I power the machine down and then I am able to log back on, but the process repeats itself. I never do this, but I am hoping someone can help me. I'm running Windows XP on a Gateway laptop. My browser is locking up when I go from one website to another. I can get to LGF after I log on, but if I try to go to another site, I get locked up in the "hourglass" mode and everything freezes. I can't close out the page either. And when I go to "start" and initiate the logoff/shutdown function, that button is also frozen. So I power the machine down and then I am able to log back on, but the process repeats itself. Does anyone know if this sounds like a simple setting issue or does it sound like a major hardware issue. Any help is appreciated.
1) Can you use any other programs (other than internet related)?
2) How are you attached to the Internet?
3) What browser are you using?
4) Log on? What do you mean? Log on to your laptop or log on to a network that your laptop is connected to?

Ban Ki-Moon, is baying at the moon again.
UN chief wants Gaza conflict halt
Ahead of a trip to the region to push for a truce, Ban Ki-moon said too many people had died and there had been too much civilian suffering.
[snip]
Palestinian medical sources say 910 people have been killed in Gaza so far, of whom 292 were children and 75 were women. Israeli officials say 13 Israelis, including three civilians, have been killed.
[snip]
Damn fine shooting if you ask me, 7 out of 10 are terrorists hiding behind those civilians.
"My message is simple, direct and to the point: the fighting must stop," Mr Ban told a news conference in New York ahead of his departure on Tuesday for the Middle East.
"In Gaza, the very foundation of society is being destroyed: people's homes, civic infrastructure, public health facilities and schools."
[snip]
Talk to Hamas dickwad.

"We will deal positively with any initiative aimed at ending the offensive," (Haniyeh) said.
Haniyeh's speech, which ended with a prayer, was seen by some Palestinians as an admission of defeat. A Fatah official in Ramallah said the speech reflected Hamas's growing predicament."This speech shows that Hamas has been defeated," he said. "Haniyeh has actually raised the white flag."
The official pointed out that the speech was also an indication of the growing rift between the Hamas leadership in the Gaza Strip and the one in Damascus and Beirut.

It's going to be insufferable, the kind of celebrating that certain sectors will do. With that said, it's an affair of state, and important occasion in the life of the nation, part of our civic culture and ceremonies, and for that reason, I want it to be a resounding success.

My son is going with a van load of 20 somethings and a designated driver. The bars will open open to 4 AM for the occasion. He's 27, a first time voter and actually knocked on doors with his friends fo Obama. Even if you did not vote for the guy, it's nice to see the kids interested. The trick will be to not disappoint them.
I think disappointment is inevitable. The 20-somethings could use some civics lessons too.

Yep. Here's what Haniyeh says during the same speech that he says "We will deal positively with any initiative aimed at ending the offensive,":
"We are confident that eventually we would achieve victory and crush the aggression," he said. "The intifada must continue because the occupation is continuing to kill."

I alway thought the white flag meant "Charge!"
I hunger for an unconditional surrender, but will settle for an unconditional ceasefire + IDF stays in Gaza until Israel is satisfied that the smuggling tunnels are closed for good and all rocket-launchers and missiles are destroyed.
The stipulation will be that in future, no terror attacks will be tolerated, not even one, and it will be understood that in such a case the Israeli response will be immediate and grossly disproportionate.
That would be a victory for Israel.

re: #488 Guanxi88
The new French battle tank:
Got three reverse gears, and one forward gear, in case the enemy gets behind them.
ALL THINGS FRENCH - BLACKFIVE'S ENCOUNTER WITH A FRENCH ARMY GENERAL
General Jannier did not speak English. He had an American Army Captain as an interpreter. As I walked with the General, the Army Captain interpreter stopped each Sergeant from talking about his equipment - instead, he insisted that I describe what we were looking at and then he would translate it for the General. When I asked why, the Captain just said, "Lieutenant, just do as the General asks."
[snip]
As we moved along, it became more and more apparent to me that General Jannier did not think very highly of enlisted soldiers. This thought began to grind on my nerves because I was a "mustang" - meaning that I had been a Sergeant before becoming an Officer. Sergeants (Non-Commissioned Officers) in the American military were more educated, motivated and dedicated than ever before - and they served for a pitiance and most could qualify for welfare/food stamps. Couple this with the fact that the General would mutter things in French while I was describing the equipment and you can probably tell why I was getting a little irritated. I kept getting the impression that he was criticizing the US Army with American Sergeants looking on.
[snip]
Holding up my hand to stop the Sergeant from describing his M1A1, I began describing the tank in great detail. It has an impressive array of weapons, and roles of the crew are interesting. While I was talking, General Jannier made some comments in French under his breath. The Sergeant assigned to discuss the tank's attributes gave me a confused look.I thought, That's it! I can't take any more of this arrogant bullsh#t!
But, because I had a lingering doubt that the General might actually be sincere, what I politely asked was, "Captain, what did the General just say?"
The Army Captain interpreter replied, "Lieutenant, don't worry about it."
I grew more insistent, "Captain, what did the General just say."
The Captain, exasperated as well, just mumbled, "He says that it is inferior to the Leclerc (French) tank. That's all."
My incredulous voice went up a few decibels, "Inferior?!", a few more decibels, "Why?! Because it doesn't have three gears for REVERSE?"
The smile on the M1A1's Sergeant's face was priceless. However, the Captain turned white as a ghost. I could read the "Oh SH#T!" look on his face. General Jannier looked stunned, then you could see his eyes narrowed on me, his smirk faded into a sneer.
The Army Captain's face tightened up. He turned to me to address me directly, "Lieutenant, General Jannier can speak English. HE...JUST...CHOOSES...NOT...TO!"
Oh SH#T!

It's going back a ways, but the French were pretty awesome soldiers during the Napoleonic Wars.
Of course, after Bonaparte made his rep, it helped that whole countries would surrender just at the rumor of his approach. His military genius consisted to a big extent of projecting an image of unbeatable military genius.
And he had plenty of troops from conquered nations: Italians, Germans, Poles, even an odd Mameluke or two.
When the Russians finally stood up to him at Borodino, then sat back and let him conquer Moscow unopposed, the Grande Armee fell apart like a bunch of boy scouts with an open keg in a cathouse.

Ive heard some good things about French Soldiers serving. Just because their leadership sucks, doesn't mean their cowards.
I developed a bad attitude towards the French a long time ago:
1) Back in '86 when Reagan sent the -111's to Ghaddafi's house the French refused overflight - extending the flight time and fatigue for the crews considerably
2) Shortly thereafter they imposed a visa restriction on travel to France. You could travel anywhere else with a US Military ID Card and a DD whatever the hell the leave form was....but not to France
3) They pulled out of NATO in '66 or so? Didn't pull their weight cause they were being defended by the geographical accident of us and the Germans being between them and the Soviets.......
4) They gave Khomeini a home.......
5) They shit on us after liberating them twice

Actually it was the French Revolution that caused the breach. Napoleon never intended to honor the sale of Louisiana for any longer than necessary (he intended to take it back as soon as he had the European thing taken care of (meanwhile it relieved him of the trouble of protecting it from the English). Afterwords, there were several several diplomatic flare ups with Lincoln secretly providing arms to Juarez to keep Napoleon the Third through his proxy the Emperor of Mexico (Maximilian) busy, in spite of a direct prohibition by Congress (can anyone spell Contra-gate?). There were several dust ups all the way to the 20th Century that unfortunately are vague footnotes in history books. BTW guess who was the biggest book publisher in the World during Victorian times (hint: it wasn't Britain) and "He who writes the History, controls it".

Speaking of the French...
...Ms Dati is the most senior minority minister, but Mr Sarkozy has also had a stormy time with Ms Yade, who handles human rights at the foreign ministry. When the president invited Libya’s Muammar Qaddafi to Paris, she insisted to a newspaper that France was “not a doormat on which a leader, terrorist or not, can come to wipe the blood of his crimes from his feet”. Mr Sarkozy was not amused. More recently, the 32-year-old refused his request that she should stand for election to the European Parliament in June. She would prefer, she said sniffily, to win a “national electoral mandate”.The least controversial of the three is Ms Amara—although even she once breached political etiquette by calling the government’s plans for DNA tests for immigrants “disgusting”. Ms Amara’s problem has been neither poor judgment nor mismanagement but rather a lack of money to put much flesh on her plan banlieue, an attempt to revive prospects in the French suburbs. Her down-to-earth approach—she still lives in her two-room flat in eastern Paris, refusing grand official lodgings—and her plain-talking style go down well with voters. In a recent popularity poll, despite her relative invisibility, she ranked four places ahead of Ms Dati.
The difficulty for Mr Sarkozy is that he cannot afford to let any of his minority ministers fail. Long before his election as president he argued the case for a Condoleezza Rice à la française. Barack Obama’s election has added urgency to the efforts to find one. Even if Mr Sarkozy were to move Ms Dati, say, he would probably have to offer her another job. Any hint at incompetence would be seized on, however absurdly, as racism. In the short run, the answer, as with most such puzzles, will probably be for the Elysée quietly to take charge of troublesome dossiers—if, that is, it has not done so already.

Americans should read enough history to get their heads around the shear volume of blood that Europe shed in the three great conflagrations of the 30 years War of the 17th century, the Napoleonic Wars and WW-I, each was preceded like an earthquake by smaller shocks and the last was followed by the final disaster of WW-II but unless you can conceive of what those three did to the European psyche it is impossible to understand how they can be so self destructive now in American eyes.

Italy tried to invade France when Germany did. IIRC, they got something like 100 feet into France before the French stopped them. The French held on that front until Germany crushed them elsewhere. There was some kind of stink that France raised when the Germans insisted they formally surrender to Italy.

The divide between the two camps is as wide as Yosemite Valley. The Democrats have devised a plan to get around this problem, albeit a desperate and legally questionable one. They want to relabel many taxes as “fees” and increase them. Although it takes two-thirds of legislators to pass a tax increase, fees could be increased by a simple majority vote. Republicans, who have more than a third but less than half of the seats in both chambers of the legislature, would be overridden. Mr Schwarzenegger vetoed the Democrats’ proposed budget this week, although he did not reject their ruse in principle. ...

It really is too bad they never could get a grip on running the place. My son's been there for going on four years now and he's still amazed at some of the things they do there.

My Pa added one to that list:
Never drink within 50 feet of a pool table.
It isn't the pool table it is the men with wooden sticks in their hands. In college I'd go with friends to a bar in Back of the Yards, the kind of place with portraits of the Easter Uprising Martyrs on the walls. Holding the pool table was easy for a poor player like me, I stayed sober and let the other guy scratch. The secret was knowing how to judge when was the right moment to say "Thank you gentlemen" and give up the table and leave before the party turned ugly.

I think that was rather his point - never wise to drink where folks have long, heavy sticks so close at hand, and never gamble where drinks are so easily had.

It's been awhile since I waded into the WaPo's comments. There was some comic value, there, though.
I thought this was worthwhile, and not comic. (Which is not meant as an excuse for their editors at other times)

I'm afraid it's going to break my wallet. I came here about 5 years ago from WA state. Just the increase in state income taxes took my breath away. Home prices made me gag.........congestion is on a third world scale. But the weather is nice - as I'm constantly told.....sheesh.

that was last year but a few months ago I was lurking and people were talking about apologizing to get reinstated...I mailed Charles not for that but just to admit my stupidity because I hadnt before...that's the kind of guy I am...I have enormous respect for what he's doing here but if you fuck up you're gone...graciously he put me back up....I was very surprised....he reviewed that exchange and changed his mind....he's an honest and fair guy and now I'm keenly sensitive to posters that disregard his simple request for posting....

re: #645 Iron Fist
The dead on both sides of the Civil War combined was only around 600,000. OTOH, we took some amazing damage in the Pacific in WWII. we inflicted some horrific damage even there, damn near depopulating some of those islands.
Of course, we nuked Japan to bring the war to a close. As Patton said, we were very good at making the other dumb son-of-a-bitch die for his country. Somewhere between the end of WWII and the end of Vietnam we lost that. Nowadays we are afraid to hurt the other dumb son-of-a-bitch's feelings, let alone kill them in wholesale carload lots.
This may yet lead to defeats that are bad of us to revert to our WWII willingness to inflict harm.
600,000 out of a 1860 population of 31,400,000+ including almost 4,000,000 slaves. So an equivalent casualty rate of the current combat ready population would be over six million dead. What is impressive is that we did not retreat into pacifism afterwards.
653 | lifeofthemind Mon, Jan 12, 2009 5:59:14pm |
To be clear about the above, we have sustained less than 2% of the Civil War casualty rate in the current conflict and that is including the loses of 9-11.

re: #633 Iron Fist
Actually, that is not necessarily true. At point-blank range (where most shootings occur) a good knife can be as deadly as a pistol. The main advantage a gun gives you is range. The late Grandmaster Remey Presas used to do a demonstration of that to law enforcement. He could close about 21 feet in the time it takes to draw and aim a pistol from a belt holster.
Not everyone (by any stretch of the imagination) is anywhere near Presas' league (there are a relative handful of people in that category in the world), but a gun isn't a magic wand. Some years ago DC cops shot a guy armed with a knife and it made a big stink on the news, but the cops were 100% right to shoot him.
