You earn the 8404 designator at 21 Area (Camp Del Mar) in Pendleton or at Camp Johnson in Lejuene, at Field Medical Service School, it is where Navy Corpsmen learn and earn the brotherhood of every Marine.

I dunno, as a signal platoon leader 15 years ago (reserves) my biggest problem was 18-21 year old straight females, followed by 18-21 year old straight males. After 21, they both matured (and at least the guys didn't pull biology to get out of drill). Never had a suspected gay male, but had a few suspected lesbians, and knew other officers who similarly had suspected lesbians, and the general consensus was, give them the guns and stand the fuck back (in other words, they kicked ass, which leads me to believe that some straight men are pussies if they think every fag wants to nail them). In modern warfare where computer operations and linguistics are critical, I doubt our Army would not be enhanced by allowing gays to serve in combat service support roles at first.

I think a lot of the anti-gay animus in here is completely cultural and religious. Not that that should not be considered -- if 50% of the military won't re-up, Houston we have a problem.

What bothers me is not the battle field, when people are shooting at you sex is the last thing on your mind.
But it is getting them to the battle field that bothers me, when they are in garrison or in school getting ready to go to an operational command.

OK, if gays can live in the barracks... and be room mates, can heterosexual men and women be room mates?
OK if we have gays aboard ships (in male or female only berthings) can we just do away with single sex berthings on ships?
OK how about the showers at the gym, male homosexuals in the showers with other men, why not heterosexual men and women in the same showers.
Or tell me what happens at the Navy or Marine Corps Ball when a gay Marine or Sailor takes his or her same sex partner and decides to lip lock while dancing?
The implications are myriad and troubling.
Sexual orientation should not be discussed, period, leave it alone. The military is not there to advance or prohibit the exercise of a person's sexual conduct, it there there to defend the nation.
We should leave all this gays in the military stuff to the privacy of the person involved. Don't discuss it. It should be private.

I don't know how we would get our hands around the policy implication of ending this, but there would be significant logistical, cultural and administrative issues to deal with. They would be disruptive and expensive, but if the Executive is determined to do this, and the Supreme Court says it is legal, then we in the military have a responsibility to follow lawful orders. It will involve a lot of hard work at changing the way the military does a lot of things.

I'm still around soldiers every day and I'm not convinced gays/lesbians have the acceptance in the military many (civilians) think they do.

I guess I just don't know enough about how it would all have to work itself out throughout the military.

I do know that a former friend (now deceased), ex-Navy officer, when the original fluff-up happened under Clinton, took the side of gay people being allowed to serve. I always suspected that he himself was bi-sexual, and perhaps that somehow worked into his leaving the Navy before retirement (he had quite a record and even in civilian life was in continuous close contact with senior Navy leaders and continued to hold the highest clearances, so I know he didn't leave the Navy due to dishonorable reasons.)

Such a cultural shift can't come without cost, I reckon. This will be interesting to watch, to see how quickly Obama will act on this.

Well if California and Massachusetts are an indication, the west and north east is comfortable with gays having rights.
In my heart I believe that gays are treated badly sometimes and for no good reason other than because the people who treat them badly are just nasty.
I also agree that there would have to be a big culture change in the military.
Having said that, I do not know how much making this change would cost us.
The Barracks, ships, gyms would all have to be changed to meet the needs of the gay population, and provide "equal treatment" as our constitution dictates.
A lot of new policies regarding conduct would have to be written and enforced, necessitating a culture change.
It would be rough for a while, the military would adapt as it always does... but at what cost.

The argument regarding gays in the military is equal treatment under the law. It does not say equal treatment for some.

If gays can share a room with their homosexual lover, then why shouldn't a heterosexual be allowed to share a room with his or her heterosexual lover?

The implications are not as simple as you would like to make it. If there is a question of equality... then we have to deal with the logical implication of making that argument all the way out and dealing with the consequences.

Police say three rockets fired from Lebanon have landed in northern Israel.

That is my point too.

Some things are best kept private. leave the current policy, don't ask don't tell. If you are gay, go ahead and serve, don't boast about it, don't create a big deal.

If the nation decides that homosexuals can marry, and be granted spousal rights... then the legislature and the executive will have to deal with the consequences about housing and other benefits for homosexual spouses, etc. Until then, keep that stuff private. This is a political matter, and best dealt with by the politicians who would also have to deal with the cost of implementing such a policy.

You know, it dawned on me that the world is becoming an increasingly dangerous place with extraordinarily violent people living in it. People who seek to commit epic acts of violence against an unsuspecting populace in for the benefit of their twisted faith and fellow believers. If only there was some way for our military to take these people out of comission on the battlefield and detain them somewhere while trying to obtain information from them regarding tactics, financing, logistics and planning.

Somewhere offshore- yet secure, since these sort of detainees would pose a great security risk if they were held pretty much anywhere in the continental United States.

If homosexuals are legally married, I do not see how the military can prevent them from serving, and I cannot fathom that there wuold be a legal theory that would deny spousal support and other benefits to a homosexual spouse. That is something our national lagislature and congress would have to work out, and the military would have to follow the orders of the President.
I tell you there are significant costs to overturning "Don't ask don't tell", and they have more than fiscal implications.

I thought the ACLU would arrange for some litigation theater that pitted a homosexual couple against one of the religous institutions that's dead-set against same-sex marrige by having a gay couple ask to be married in a Catholic church or Mormon temple and claim discrimination when they were rejected.

Despite what "Liberals" may say, the contrary is true. The US Military has always had to deal with the implications of changes in American taste and culture and find workable solutions before much of the rest of the nation has found them.
I suspect the miltary will have to find workable solutions to many of the vexing issues regarding gays in national life, long before the legislatures of our states or national levels do if the don't ask don't tell policy in the military is overturned.

International convention on territorial waters put limits on the idea of sovereignty over bodies of water.

I just thought it interesting that the Bush administration would cite climate change as one of the reasons for their decision. There is a growing pissing match building about the Arctic. I would presume that the Canadians wouldn't have a lot of heartburn about US vessels transiting the NW passage. However, not every ship going through there will be American or Canadian.

The NW passage is the shortcut from east Asia to Europe. As such, even in the near term with very limited transiting of the NW passage due to it being mostly ice covered. However, that ice cover is changing and everyone are expecting to see more than just scientific research vessels trying to transit it.

What if Russia wants to send a sub through there? Or a Chinese military vessel?

Sydney is a story of two cities. The coastal suburbs and downtown were "only" 30C (82F) today but anywhere beyond about 15 miles (25 km) were approaching 100F.
