Tech Note: JQuery 1.3 Released

Science • Views: 1,845

Gifts for geeks! A major update for the indispensable Javascript library jQuery has been released into the wild: jQuery 1.3 and the jQuery Foundation. They’re claiming some big speed improvements and other nice enhancements; full details are in the release notes. And they’ve also unveiled a great Ajax-based API browser, setting a new standard for API documentation. Kudos to the jQuery team for some excellent work.

We’ve installed the new version at LGF and had only one problem so far, which is a bit amazing considering that the LGF Blog Engine contains quite a lot of jQuery-based Javascript code and uses half a dozen plugins.

The problem occurred in both Internet Explorer and Firefox 3 (but strangely, not in Safari), and was tracked down to the following code, which refreshes any currently visible “spinoff links” after a successful login:

$('div.related:not(:hidden) input[name=relatedentry]').each(function (i) {
	doRelated($(this).val(), 'show');
});

The first expression was causing script timeouts in IE and Firefox. The Firebug debugger revealed that jQuery was entering an infinite loop when trying to process the expression, even with no visible spinoff links.

After more experimentation, we concluded that jQuery 1.3 has some bugs lurking in the new implementation of the “:not” selector. In this case there’s a simple fix that doesn’t affect functionality: use the “:visible” selector instead.

$('div.related:visible input[name=relatedentry]').each(function (i) {
	doRelated($(this).val(), 'show');
});

But in other sections where we really needed the NOT functionality, we had to change the code to use jQuery’s “not” method instead of the selector. For example, this:

$('div.postfooter div.rating a.ratebutton:not(.igray)').click(RateEntry);

…had to be changed to this:

$('div.postfooter div.rating a.ratebutton').not('.igray').click(RateEntry);

After these changes, everything seems groovy in all the major browsers on both Mac and PC. But please let us know if you discover anything that isn’t working right.

Using FF3 cannot get into the links, just the spinning circles. A window pops up script busy or some such.

I stayed on the Gazacam way too long a few nights ago.
The next day, I had big time problems with a lot of things, including scripts.

I spent the entire morning troubleshooting, pinging, using tracert, all kinds of geeky stuff trying to get a clue. Dirt slow, hanging, or connection timeouts.
For no apparent reason, I reset my cable modem, router, etc.
Problem gone. I think it was the cable modem.
I have no clue what did what to what.

Gerald Kaufman, a governing Labour Party British Member of Parliament, declared Thursday that Israel was taking advantage of the guilt many non-Jews feel over the Holocaust to ruthlessly press ahead with its offensive in Gaza.

Kaufman, a frequent critic of Israel who was raised as an Orthodox Jew, sharply criticized Israel in a House of Commons debate on Gaza, saying that "The present Israeli government ruthlessly and cynically exploit the continuing guilt from Gentiles over the slaughter of Jews in the Holocaust as justification for their murder of Palestinians."

The MP also commented on the claim that large numbers of the Palestinian victims were militants, saying that "I suppose the Jews fighting for their lives in the Warsaw ghetto could have been dismissed as militants," he said.

Kaufman urged the British government to impose an arms embargo on Israel.

Is he still a Jews? I know he is still a Putz.

Excuse me to all the Jewish folks here but, really, I dont feel guilty for what happened to the Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto any more than I feel guilty for what happened to the Slaves in Georgia. I wasn't born, I had no control. I do, however, firmly believe that Israel has the right to wipe out the nest of vipers living in her backyard.

The first expression was causing script timeouts in IE

I've experienced many timeouts with IE on sites that use Ajax. The activex object references must require more memory/processing than the standard javascript reference. The exact same scenario when using Firefox did not have the issue.

Charles,

I've been using dojo, including dojo.query in some of my pages for some projects I've been working on. Do you find JQuery to be superior to dojo's DOM searching/manipulating?

Sweet! just read the jquery 1.3 announcement and saw this post right after. Have to say I love jquery. I use it to add a couple things to my site, and other sites. I hadn't really thought of it but didn't realize that LGF uses jquery. Shouldn't be surprised, ya'll have great taste.

Hmm- looks like the spy is getting stuck when I click on a rated comment and check the ding counter. Spy doesn't start running again until I close that comment's window.

Sorry- just the ratings window.

I don't have any experience with Dojo, so can't make a comparison.

Charles, I completely agree with whatever the hell, you just stated. That's exactly what I would have done, if the button that turns this thing on, would have said so.

OR, I may have just hit the same button and turned this this off.

this this...yea, gooder as hell.

I'm using FireFox 2, and I'm getting some MAJOR CPU usage from the main page. Pulling up the task manager, I'm seeing what looks like a fine toothed comb of the CPU hitting 100% and then dropping back down to around 10%, and then back up again every second or two. Reloading the main page just continued the pattern. My machine is pretty well stomped by whatever this is. This is the first time I've hit LGF since before this went up.

Firefox 2 is now way out of date, and has major security problems. It also has a very poor Javascript engine, almost as bad as IE6's. I don't recommend using that browser any more -- you're going to continue having problems with it, and not just at LGF.

But in any case, I'm reverting back to the earlier version of jQuery, because the new one does seem to have some problems with larger pages.
