We have so many of them here in Colorado that I think it should be legal to kill them. The homeless could have a feast. We get a lot of them that winter here, and summer here, and, well, just stay the fuck here. Hundreds of them. And they poop all over the place. Size, size, that Airbus 320, I'm not familiar with it. It looks like about the size of a 727 or a DC10, smaller short hope airplane.
I know the Airbus I take to Frankfort all the time is a 380, holds a boatload of passengers (no pun intended).
How many does this hold?
320 is a little larger than a Boeing 737. About 120 passenger capacity.

Interesting facts about the "gremlin" in the "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" episode that has been mentioned on this thread.
"Nick Cravat (January 11, 1912, New York City–January 29, 1994, California) was an American film actor. Life-long friend and trapeze partner of Burt Lancaster, they performed as "Lang and Cravat". He co-starred with Lancaster in nine films all together, of which The Crimson Pirate and The Flame and the Arrow are the best-known. The acrobatic Cravat is also remembered as playing the "gremlin" on the wing in the 1963 Twilight Zone episode, "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet".
He played a mute character in several movies, notably The Flame and the Arrow and The Crimson Pirate, mostly because his thick Brooklyn accent, which he could not shake, would have been out of place in the film's storyline.
Nick Cravat and Burt Lancaster were childhood friends and met as youngsters (approximately at age 9) at a summer camp in New York. Their friendship continued through the years. They later created an acrobatic act and joined the Kay Brothers circus in Florida. Interestingly, Cravat & Lancaster both passed away in 1994. His grave is located at Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery."

I flew US Air last weekend and sat in an emergency row. Random people are recruited and paid to act as if they're in an emergency situation. If they fail, they can't fly anymore and have to go through re-training and pass the test again. I found the conversation very informative, but my wife and the lady next to me weren't so thrilled by the looks on their faces. LOL. I was on a flight to of from Arizona (don't remember. The plane takes a little long to get off the ground (IMHO) and then sharply climbs. You could hear everyone gasping. The plane then levels out at about 5000 feet and stays there. 10 minutes later the pilot comes on and actually says: "Good news and bad news. The bad news is that the landing gear is stuck. The good news is that we think (THINK?!) it is stuck down."
We do a flyover at the airport, presumably to determine whether it is down. I am with my wife, who at this point, only thinks it is a minor inconvenience. I am pale as a ghost, and sweating buckets. I hate flying but that is not my normal reaction. She asks what is wrong. I ask her to look out the window and tell me if she sees ANY other airplanes on the tarmack and whether a runway is lined with emergency vehicles. Yes she answers. I ask her if she ever considered why planes typically fly around to burn off fuel before trying to land, and why that was not the case right now? She was so pissed off at me for sharing.

apologies for going offtopic on such a tragic incident but found this item in a local news-site.
Muslim pupils at a private Scots school were asked if they hate Jews.
[Link: www.dailyrecord.co.uk...]
"A TOP private school is at the centre of a race row between its Jewish and Muslim pupils.
In the wake of fighting in Gaza which has left nearly 1000 Palestinians dead, Muslim children at Glasgow's Hutchesons' Grammar School were asked if they hated Jews.
The school admitted many put up their hands - only to be told they should hate the Israeli army instead.
Muslim and Jewish pupils attend separate morning assemblies at the school, where fees are around £9000 a year.
News of last Thursday's controversial meeting was released by two Jewish pupils who went along by mistake.
The assembly was led by Asgher Mohammed, a parent who is believed to be a chemist.
News of the hate vote spread quickly through the 368-year-old school.
The parents of one of the Jewish children involved wrote to school rector Dr Kenneth Greig.
Dr Greig had letters sent out to other parents to explain the circumstances.
A school spokesman said yesterday: "The person in question has a long-standing history of taking the morning assembly.
"This is the first time anything like this has happened.
Perhaps it was not advisable to ask the question that he did.
"However, no one believes anything was intended to cause offence.
"His lesson was to preach religious tolerance and to show, despite what is going on in the Middle East, that Muslims and Jews in the UK can live in peace."
Claire Singerman, who co-ordinates Jewish assemblies at the school, stressed the "excellent" relationship between pupils of different faiths.
Chemist Asgher Mohammed said last night: "I have seen the statement from the school and amvery happy with that. I am not going to say anything else."
Muslim pupils make up around seven per cent of the school roll. Around six per cent are Jewish.
The school's famous ex-pupils include former lord chancellor Derry Irvine and John Buchan, author of The Thirty-Nine Steps.
Three months ago, it was ordered to improve access for poorer students or risk losing its status as a charity."

re: #171 mfarmer1
I flew US Air last weekend and sat in an emergency row. Before we took off, the flight attendant seated facing us was very descriptive about her training and how they go through a yearly certification. Random people are recruited and paid to act as if they're in an emergency situation. She was very graphic, detailing how everyone screams, that there's always smoke and loud explosions, etc. She said the sound effects were deafening. They get 90 seconds to get everyone out safely. If they fail, they can't fly anymore and have to go through re-training and pass the test again. I found the conversation very informative, but my wife and the lady next to me weren't so thrilled by the looks on their faces. Can't say I didn't think about what she had just told us however as we took off.
Looks like the training paid off here. Kudos to the crew and passengers of this flight!

The take-off seemed normal for the first three minutes, then there was a load boom, he felt the plane lurch and level out from its climb, he could see flames coming out of one engine. The pilot informed everyone they were trying to return to LaGuardia. The plane's turn would line them up with the generally north-south runway. As the turn got the plane lined up with the Hudson River, the pilot told everyone to brace for impact. The plane hit hard, but at a slight angle. The plane was in one piece and floating. The back of the plane began to fill with water. The passengers were able to get out and onto 5 life rafts. For the most part women and children and the injured were helped out first. The life rafts began to sink [overloaded? not inflated correctly?]. By that time some ferries and other boats had arrived and helped people out of the water.

All you need to do is shut down the airport for an hour from time to time, and allow a hand-picked group of hunters to come in and shoot as many geese as they are able. Each hunter takes home what would be his normal bag limit; the remainder go to feed the homeless.
Geese aren't stupid. They congregate at airports because they know they won't be hunted there. Change that factor, and the geese will disperse somewhat.

Computer old-timers will appreciate this:
On a commuter flight from Chicago to Green Bay I sat at the front of the cabin. There was only a curtain between the cabin and the cockpit so I could see the instrument panel and what was apparently a digital airspeed indicator in the middle of the panel consisting of three seven-segment LEDs.
As made the final approach into Green Bay I watched this indicator- the pilot kept it steady at "100", which was I assumed 100 kts. As we crossed the fence I looked out the window and was surprised to see that we were going really fast. The plane hit hard and fishtailed and several taxiways shot past until the pilot was able to finally stop the plane and taxi to the terminal.
At the terminal, as the other passengers exited from the back of the plane a mechanic rolled a service platform up to the side cockpit window and talked to the pilot. It was a rather heated exchange, but from what I could glean from it the center bar of the middle digit of the LED display was defective so an "8" was indistinguishable from a "0".
So we didn't land at 100 kts, we landed at 180 kts.
Fun!

Sky just might be the happiest employee at Southwest Florida International Airport.
. . .
Sky represents the third generation of working dogs at Southwest Florida International, which was the first commercial airport in the country to use a dog as part of its Wildlife Management Program. Jet, a male Border collie, was adopted in 1999 and worked for about two years. In 2001, Radar was brought on at just more than 2 years old, retiring in June at the ripe age of 9.
The bird dog concept has caught on across the country, where airport operations managers are finding just how efficient dogs can be at keeping birds off the airfield and clear of the runways.
“When we first started the bird dog program, we were reporting like 40 strikes a year,” said Angie Straight. “And now we’re down to about 10.”

As for the plane ever flying again:
The NTSB, FAA, Airbus and others will tear that plane apart to see if it indeed was a bird strike that brought the plane down. They will also want to see how the plane's collision and safety features performed—what worked & what didn't. Insurance companies will want to know who is ultimately liable.
Without daily, even hourly slaughter of birds, it is very difficult to keep birds away from airports. Pilots and air traffic controllers often pass information back and forth about birds when they get too near airplane traffic.

Correct, a piece of metal blew a tire, tire debris puncture a fuel tank dumping fuel directly into engines 1 & 2. The aircraft continued to lose airspeed, and the nose up angle increased until it stalled and tail slid to the ground.

F-15 canopies were tested at least once that I read about with frozen chickens. At an old job, we had an Aviation Weekly subscription.
I think they were supposed to thaw the frozen chickens before firing them at the aircraft with a big air-gun.
A thawed chicken would act more or less like a live chicken, insofar as the collision with the test target is concerned (but a lot less squawking and flapping, I expect).
A frozen chicken would act more like hitting an airborne rock. Big difference.

Here're the stats: 74% of all airline crashes, including the ' bad ' ones, are survived.
So don't be drunk on the plane, do look at the seat pocket card to see where your nearest exits are (probably not the one you boarded from), and don't pile crap around the floor near the exits. It makes getting out so much harder. Also, the biggest mistake px make in a crash is failing to unfasten their seat belts. If you're in an accident, when movement stops, unfasten the belt!

During the plane's take-off run from Charles de Gaulle Airport, a piece of titanium debris on the runway ruptured a tyre, which subsequently burst. The piece was about three centimetres wide and nearly 50 centimetres long. A large chunk of tyre (4.5 kg) struck the underside of the aircraft's wing structure at over 300 km/h rupturing fuel tank number 5 above the landing gear. Leaking fuel was ignited by an electric arc in the landing gear bay or through contact with severed electrical cables. At the point of ignition, engines 1 and 2 both surged and lost all power, but slowly recovered over the next few seconds. A large plume of flame developed; the crew then shut down engine 2 in response to a fire warning.

re: #534 Bubblehead II
A large plume of flame developed; the crew then shut down engine 2 in response to a fire warning.
very tragic....not mechanical error and all that

re: #511 tradewind
Here're the stats: 74% of all airline crashes, including the ' bad ' ones, are survived.
So don't be drunk on the plane, do look at the seat pocket card to see where your nearest exits are (probably not the one you boarded from), and don't pile crap around the floor near the exits. It makes getting out so much harder. Also, the biggest mistake px make in a crash is failing to unfasten their seat belts. If you're in an accident, when movement stops, unfasten the belt!
The last two major US airline crashes had no deaths - so this is sound advice. I've always thought that if a crash occurs, and it's deadly, I'd prefer to be intoxicated.

The incident is unprecedented. I cannot recall another forced landing of a commercial passenger jet on water. Never happened before.
The luggage may be a total loss but if they got everyone out of there, it has made my whole day and is the best good news bad news ever. US air is out 1 plane but what a happy ending!
There are a couple of incidents on the record.
A Boeing 377 ditched in the Pacific. Everyone rescued in that one.
Another 377 ditched in Puget sound with 10 fatalities.
In '96 a 767 was hijacked and forced to ditch.
Those are the ones I remember off the top of my head.

And people think I'm crazy for refusing to fly.
No, just emotional and irrational. It is far more dangerous to drive than to fly, it is a statistical reality. Take emotions and feelings out of it, those just distort reality.
If you were to drive across the country, compared to flying across, you are about a thousand times more in danger from driving.
And you are missing out on visiting some great places in the world.

One of the survivors said it was 2-3 minutes into the flight before anything happened. That means that geese at the airport were not the problem.
Comprende?
No, it was not 2-3 minutes before something happened, geese were hit shortly after takeoff. It might make power for a bit before finally eating itself. The engine might still work for a bit, or it can go out all at once. It can have a lot of imbalance and vibration, and engine fire too occuring, that will lead to imminent failure. But since it is an emergency anyways, you get all the power and altitude you can while it is making power

This is what I hate about all forms of travel other than driving myself. I have no control. I'm completely at the mercy of other drivers/pilots and their maintenance ability. I am really uncomfortable in these situations and so I wont fly unless I absolutely have to (haven't been on a plane since 1996).

In a planned emergency, you would be assigned a buddy. A fellow passenger would be responsible for helping you evacuate the aircraft, and would be re-seated to be next to you before landing. Flight attendants are trained to mentally assess people as they board and pick out likely helpers in advance.

In September 2005, Henri Perrier, the former head of the Concorde division at Aerospatiale, and Jacques Herubel, the Concorde chief engineer, came under investigation for negligence: a report stated that the company had more than 70 incidents involving Concorde tyres between 1979 and 2000, but had failed to take appropriate steps based upon these incidents.[14]
On 12 March 2008, Bernard Farret, a deputy prosecutor in Pontoise, outside Paris, asked judges to bring manslaughter charges against Continental Airlines and four individuals:
* John Taylor, a Continental mechanic
* Stanley Ford, a Continental maintenance manager
* Henri Perrier of Aerospatiale
* Claude Frantzen, a former employee of the French airline regulator.
Charges against Jacques Herubel were dropped.[15][16]
On 3 July 2008, confirmation of the trial, including Jacques Herubel, was published which is due to commence in 2009 and is expected to last two to three months.

That's what they say. Still, I rather die in the cab.
Some airlines (I know United for one) play the cockpit radio traffic on one of the in-flight entertainment channels. Some folks find it eases stress to listen to it so they have more information about what is going on with the flight.
If that doesn't do it for you then some degree of responsible self-medication is probably in order.
Good luck in any case!

Wheels down could cause the plane to nose down and start cartwheeling, IIRC-so procedure would be to land wheels up.....
Actaully I recall the video of the jumbo jet that was hijacked and made a forced water landing off of Mozambique or somewhere nearby. That was a horrific video because the plane did cartwheel. IIRC it wasn't able to make a controlled landing because the hijackers literally ran it out of fuel........

IIRC, there was something about a design change that needed to be done to prevent the tire explosion from doing exactly what it did. Failing to report the previous problems with the tires kept that fix from having the urgency needed. Or it would have grounded the planes long before the final accident.

High-flying geese:
The expedition to Mt. Everest in 1952 found skeletons of a Northern Pintail and a Black-tailed Godwit at 16,400 feet on Khumbu Glacier. Bar-headed Geese have been observed flying over the highest peaks (29,000+ feet) even though a 10,000-foot pass was nearby. Probably at least 30 species regularly cross these high passes.

A number of people, mostly sherpas, have summitted Everest at over 29 thousand feet without oxygen. There is intense physical effort involved in climbing that mountain.
Migrating geese tend to fly at great heights because of reduced air resistance and favorable jet stream winds. I would think that 25 thousand feet would be relatively trivial to any number of species of them, especially considering their superb adaptations to extreme cold weather.

Actually you wouldn't think long at all. Traveling at 400mph in -80°F air that is at least 10 times thiner than air at sea level. I doubt you could stay conscious more than a second or two.

Well, it's not like they'd notice brain damage.
There's a reason that "goose" and "silly" are so frequently associated.
They are air breathers, right?
While the percentage of oxygen in the atmosphere remains fairly constant up to 70,000 feet, the available amount of oxygen to sustain mental and physical alertness decreases above 10,000 feet.
. . .
The Time of Useful Consciousness is a function of altitude. At 20,000 feet, an average individual will have 5 to 12 minutes. At 25,000 feet, this time is reduced to 3 to 5 minutes. At 30,000 feet only 1 to 2 minutes are available. By 40,000 feet, the average individual will have only 9 to 15 seconds (basically this represents the oxygen that was in their system before the exposure to 40,000 feet).
