We Have a Winner

Blogosphere • Views: 2,949

Yes, the votes are in, more than 26,000 of them, and we have a clear winner. You might even call it a landslide, with 39.2% of the vote. For their leg-tingling coverage of the Obama campaign, and other misbehaviors too numerous to mention, the 2008 Idiotarian Award will go to … the Mainstream Media.

There will be a formal presentation of the award with illustration by Cox & Forkum soon.

I sympathy-voted for Bawney Fwank. To me, he's the poster child for Fanny and Freddie.

Since it was the MSM that won, can their award presentation consist of the award being shoved up Keith Olbermann's ass? I couldn't suggest shoving the award up Barney Frank's ass, he'd like it too much.

Schmucks.

You can't use the term Leg-tingling to describe the media, because you also have Chris Matthews by himself, and the leg-tingling was specifically his comment. It throws off the Fiskie when one of the people you can vote for is contained within another nominee. It's like asking me to choose between the Three Musketeers or Dartanian alone. It's like asking do I like atoms or protons. It's nonsensical.

Having said that, I voted for Matthews because he's ridiculous and I left MSM because that's too vague. I do love protons, but not all atoms are created equally.

I'm not happy because I think the term is too vague to have any real meaning.

How much longer before the traditional sources of mainstream journalism are more comprehesively replaced by the much more accurate sources in the blogosphere? Tumbling ratings and newspaper subsriptions are probably reflecting the shift; for instance, the NY Times is clearly on track for being out of business (outside Manhattan at least) over the next few years.

The MSM, starring Chris Matthews, Dan Rather, Katie Couric, Keith Olberman, Bill Moyers, Geraldo Rivera, Ladies of the View, and on and on. Certainly not a complete listing, and feel free to add more of your own. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.

50 subsailor68  Fri, Jan 16, 2009 12:23:29pm

Wow. This seems like an appropriate thread to propose a game a couple of us were talking about on the earlier one. Here's the idea:

Lizards find a story in the MSM, then rewrite the headline so it is the reverse of what the story was actually saying. (Or vice versa.) Then, we all get to look at the headline (linked to the story that was chosen) without mousing over the hot link. When you've guessed what the story was about, click the link to see if you were right.

The game could be great for two reasons. First, lizards tend to be creative anyway, and the results could be good for a laugh. And second, it would be a tongue-in-cheek slap at the MSM's tendency to try to pull this crap for real.

re: #44 J.D.

I just heard today that Gannett is requiring all their employees to take off a week without pay. Wonder how much time that will buy them?

Most people will use vacation, which cleans it of the books at present value instead of future value.

My company does it every year, usually Christmas week, but we have done the week of July 4 as well Of course, they don't call it a week of without pay. They call it a site closure.

In the good old days when there were manufacturing jobs in this country, many plants would have one to two week closures for annual maintenance. Chemical plants and refineries halt ops in sections to get these important tasks done, and the employees not directly involved either go home or are farmed out to other groups.

In my mind, voting for the MSM doesn't simply indicate that there are many individual people and you'd like them all to share in the award. It marks the fact that this was the year when basically the entire journalism industry in America simply decided that it would no longer do journalism.

There were always bad reporters, plenty of them. But the fact that the entire mainstream media establishment dismantled itself this year is what made it worthy of the award. The unanimity of the phenomenon is what's Fiskie-worthy.

There were always bad reporters, plenty of them. But the fact that the entire mainstream media establishment dismantled itself this year is what made it worthy of the award. The unanimity of the phenomenon is what's Fiskie-worthy.

Well, exactly.
That vote for the MSM covers a lot of ground.

The repeal of "don't ask don't tell" is going to go over like a lead balloon in the military. I have absolutely no problem with homosexuals but it's one thing to have no problem with their lifestyle, it's another to have a man ogling you in the shower because he can now be open about his choice. If I Only Had A Brain

Suppose I accidentally got my shit together
Would I get a medal?
Or a pat on the back and a little feather
I could stick in my cap or pin it to my shirt
Go out in the yard and poke it in the dirt
Or leave it in the woods where it couldn't be found
If it fell over, would it make a sound?
And if it did, would it be the sound that you like?
Or should I do it over until I get it right?

You say everything I know is wrong
So do me a favor, and play along
As the rusty gears turn
Don't be alarmed if you smell something burning upstairs
It's a little BB rolling around in a box car
See us together

Maybe it wouldn't be hard to explain
If I only had a brain

(chorus)
Somewhere on a higher mental plain
{Somewhere On A Higher mental plain}
I might learn to come in from the rain
{I might learn to come in from the rain}
If I had a clue would I still be here with you?
{If I had a clue would I still be here with you?}
Gee whiz, if I only had a brain
{Gee Whiz, If I only had a brain}

Who's that?
Oh, my little friend cupid
Wearing a shirt that says I'm with stupid
Always nearby wherever I go
He's looking out for me, don't you know

Mr. excitement, never in a rut
Johnny on the spot with an arrow in the butt
Ouch! I guess your love is true
Now, if I could only get a clue

(chorus)
Had A Brain
Had a brain
had a brain

Hey, the Messiah considered joining the military. And he totally woulda, too, except that there wasn't a war right then, so he figured his glorious messianic attention was needed elsewhere:

Obama disclosed that he had once considered serving in the military.

“You know, I actually did,” Obama said. “I had to sign up for Selective Service when I graduated from high school. And I was growing up in Hawaii. And I have friends whose parents were in the military. There are a lot of Army, military bases there.

“And I actually always thought of the military as an ennobling and, you know, honorable option. But keep in mind that I graduated in 1979. The Vietnam War had come to an end. We weren't engaged in an active military conflict at that point. And so, it's not an option that I ever decided to pursue.”

And, perhaps, some of them are veterans or still on active duty in the military. I thank them from the bottom of my heart for their service, and also acknowledge the extra challenges that some of them might have had to endure because of their sexual orientation.

I would also add that Obama, a gutless professional demagogue who has made a living dividing people rather than bringing them together, and who more importantly has never been gay or served in the military, should not be making major changes in how the military treats homosexuality. That's just my opinion. If someone wants to revisit the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, that's great. It should be a high-level military officer. Maybe a gay one. Obama should stay the hell out of this.

It's a long sordid tale in Seattle but light rail is insanity. So far it's $15 billion over budget, 10 years late, and half of what the voters voted for.

With financing included the last funding package will be $120 Billion. For a project that will remove less than 1% of the vehicles from the road.

The question is, do ya think California would be okay if the taxpayers submitted an IOU with their returns?

Man, that sucks. Barney Franks helped engineer the biggest financial crises in the history of the United States. As a result government spending as a percentage of GDP is also at historic levels, surpassing even WWII, with no end in sight. Using this crises the left is expanding government control in all aspects of the economy. To top it off Barney was sleeping with an executive of an agency he was supposed to regulate. How could you people not vote for Barney Franks?

IMHO. I wish the government would stay out of legislating ALL morality and removed all incentives in the tax system for those who are 'married' versus those who are 'not'. Leave marriage to the churches as it was originally. Leave orientation between the two...3..4...or whatever are engaging in it. It's a non-government issue.

Why the heck should I have to register with the state to say I am living with someone?

Until I met my Male, I never missed a Steve Earle show I could get to. Now, I can't take my Male, so I don't get to see him any more.

I used to arrive as early as I could at the Fillmore, so I could get a spot right by the stage, preferably at Steve Earle's feet. Yes, I would get one heck of a crick in my neck; yes, I would walk out with my ears ringing; yes, it was bad for me in general (when I was younger, a surprising number of men would buy me beers and scotch).

You know darn well the tickets don't cover 100% of the cost. These systems are all subsidized because they're considered an economic multiplier in other ways. For example, everywhere in metropolitan Washington DC a Metro station was built, the neighborhood has re-developed, gentrified, and generated MORE in tax revenues.

It shows that we really had more unity than they wanted us to believe. Then a small subversive faction was able to situate itself into the system and orchestrate a big bamboozle. Now we are glaringly divided. I would not say split in half by any means. Just the uninformed tend to fall for MSM tripe and vote things that if they had been informed they wouldn't have accepted. This is a tough one, but I'm going to back lobo91.

There are two arguments - (1) should the fed fund local infrastructure projects (2) assuming that they should, which ones should be funded.

You;re jumping ahead of #1 to say that light rail is a worthy cause. But it does not justify the feds doing the funding to begin with. The world would work better if the localities had to do their own funding, IMO. {If the feds are going to spend the money in any case, however, this sort of project is slightly more palatable than the new Johnny Carson museum in Nebresaka}.

Speaking of gays & entertainment, there's a great article over at Big Hollywood by a gay man who's come out of the closet, so to speak, as a 9/11 conservative.

Now, however, I often feel as if I’ve been shoved right back into the closet by the very people who go around espousing diversity and equal rights and compassion – fellow gay people and “sophisticated” urban friends who in fact can’t tolerate an idea that’s not out of the playbook. When a Muslim leader in Nigeria – or even scarier, in Canada – declares that gay people should be killed and their heads cut off, I’m sorry, but that offends me. And it also worries me because we have all seen these believers act on their hate.

Meanwhile, the affluent gay community in LA never makes a peep about hate speech if it comes from non-caucasians with funny Arabic names. The buff, mostly-white queers just continue doing what they do best: identify as victims and pretend it’s 1977 – protesting the harmless Mormon church, which never fights back, and boycotting campy Mexican restaurants to put other tax-paying minorities (including some gays) out of work. Meanwhile, a threat much bigger than Prop. 8 is growing fast.

Those aren't the only reasons public transportation is subsidized. It is also subsidized 1) as a form of welfare, because poor people need to get around, 2) as an environmental program, 3) politics (look what we built!). And others I'm sure I can't think of.

I didn't say it shouldn't be subsidized.

I said it should be paid for by the people who will use it. If the taxpayers in Seattle want to pay for it, let them.

I'll even grant that DC is a special case.

But not Seattle. If the moonbats want a toy train, let them pay for it.

Then it allowed a corrupt group to get the helm of the ship and the 'good' guys are shackled by the laws. I could be wrong, but that's my take on it.

You don't actually live in the western US, do you?

If you did, you'd realize that almost without exception, mass transit systems are UTTER FAILURES in the west (BART being about the only successful one I can think of, offhand).

Western cities are not designed to make mass transit systems practical, whether light rail, subway, bus, or any other scheme you can think up. Cities in the west were built for cars.

Mass transit works in Manhattan and DC because those cities were built for horses.

The American MSM ignored those anti-American riots, I recall.

Yes, but it was a big deal in the tech industry, where I worked then. Lots of people were upset from both sides of the aisle. And yet, nothing ever came of those protests.

Contrast that with the time when the news was "leaked" (cough cough) about the interrogation units run by the CIA overseas a few years ago. But that garnered more outrage from the MSM than the people.

Court Affirms Wiretapping Without Warrants

Question the effing timing.

Beyond this article, this will get no where near the 6 years of coverage, lies, smears, and attacks leveled at this President by the left and the opposition MSM.

But it does free up Obama and the MSM from cries of "double standard!" when he continues Bushitler's security policies.

By the way, why were they so silent about Echelon?

Given the reality of Democrats, and their past use of the FBI, these will be used to wiretap conservatives, who are all abortionist-killers and clinic-bombers and potential First Black President-killers. And anti-Muslim Backlash&trade-ers.

Mosques and Weather Underground types, don't worry, you're set.

DU and DKos and Huffpo kiddies, you can (AND WILL, I'LL BET) quit your incessant whining now that the wiretaps will no longer be used to track terrorists and to stop murderous plots before they happen. Yay!

I must protest the results.
The Mainstream Media will turn on Obama like a jilted boyfriend when Hussein is forced to the center on major issues because outside of Washington, LA, and NYC the USA is basically a conservative country. Obama understands this, an example his meeting with conservative columnists who want to be "playahs". The MM will also be pissed when they finally realize the Clintons are really running the country again. Obama is a figurehead.

I would have advocated long and loud for a tie : Barney Frank and Ahmadinejad. Barney's forcing Fannie and Freddie to loan heavily to the credit-unworthy collapsed our economy in the end. Ahmadinejad is a tool, year in and year out.

And I would have made Blago the man of the year. If the dems can't handle a Chicago pol, how are they going to do with Putin, Ahmadinejad, and Chavez? It ain't going to be pretty friends.

The repeal of "don't ask don't tell" is going to go over like a lead balloon in the military. I have absolutely no problem with homosexuals but it's one thing to have no problem with their lifestyle, it's another to have a man ogling you in the shower because he can now be open about his choice. I predict a lot of sexual harassment cases in the not too distant future.

I don't think the harassment is going to be a big issue. Just because someone is gay doesn't mean they want to do it with every guy in the locker room.

However, accomodation is a huge potential issue. If an openly gay couple wants to room together on a millitatry facility what prevents a heterosexual couple from suing to get the same right? How about partner benefits, etc? There will be no shortage of creative ways to screw the whole arrangement up.

I think there are many factors involved with the new, professional military and it's too early to make that prediction. Obama gave lots of lip service to increasing vet benefits, increasing equipment spending and increasing the size of the military.

If he fumbles the ball in Iraq or Afghanastan a la Clinton in Somalia (increase the mission while decreasing resources), or if he gets us into a crazy mess in the Ukraine, then you well be right in this prediction.

He has also said that he would cut the military budget by 25%. Reconcile that.

Even if he cancels the F-22, laser weapons, and missile shield I doubt he'd be up to 25% without cutting into personnel financing.

That's a given. The biggest expenditure in the military is personnel costs, which is one reason it never makes any sense to compare our defense expenditures to those of most other countries.

We actually pay our Soldiers, unlike, say, China, where they get a couple of bowls of rice a day and call it even.

re: #448 kcladderman

Same with firefighting. Although the majority of firefighters are emts also. Everyone I know loves our job. The senior Captain on our department joined the department when Eisenhower was in office. No fooling he joined the dept in July of1960. One year before I was born. I have never heard a firefighter say man I hate this job I can't wait to retire.

They didn't talk to people doing the jobs.

To quantify the many facets of the 200 jobs included in our report, we determined and reviewed various critical aspects of all of the jobs, categorizing them into five "Core Criteria;" that is, the general categories that are inherent to every job: Environment, Income, Outlook, Stress and Physical Demands.

Firefighting is a high stress, in dangerous environments, with high physical demands. Most firefighters, and I were one, eat that stuff up.

re: #427 DaddyG

I don't think the harassment is going to be a big issue. Just because someone is gay doesn't mean they want to do it with every guy in the locker room.

However, accomodation is a huge potential issue. If an openly gay couple wants to room together on a millitatry facility what prevents a heterosexual couple from suing to get the same right? How about partner benefits, etc? There will be no shortage of creative ways to screw the whole arrangement up.

This is way beyond benefts. It's about sexual tension. Openly gay men serving in the military is going to be a real problem for the service academies. Allowing gay men to shower with straight men is insane. Might as well have the ladies showering with them as well. There is no difference.

FWIW, re: Media turning on Obama.

My take on this, is they will not. They made the bed, they smoke their own press clips, and are the harbingers of political Stockholm Syndrome.

The one thing folks on the left have far, far excelled at, is calling a failure success. In their world, it was never poorly planned, or destined to fail. No, it is because it did not receive the proper funding.

What we see today, is a glaring example of this theory in play. We gave out hundreds of billions. We now want to give hundreds of billions more.

Even if Iran gets the bomb, unemployment hits double digits, and the stock market never sees 10,000 while he is in office, it will never fall on his shoulders.

The ego-driven media will be outraged because Barry is theircreation and a reflection on them. The "novelty" of a mixed-race President will wear off very quickly when he can't move America forward. John McCain was at least smart enough to lose under the worst potential conditions an American President has faced since the Depression. Barry won because of anger over the breakdown of the economy under a Republican President, not because he had universal adoration and support among the majority of the USA. The American public is fickle. Barry has to do massive heavy lifting.

I believe you are right on this, even at my #200 job there is far more math involved than probably most people would suspect. Market grades, current prices for such, board feet and conversions to metric for Asian markets. Thank you. I tried to articulate this in a post some days ago.

It is not about whether one agrees with the lifestyle or not. It has everything to do with readiness, and working as a team. It is not the same as the civilian world. Close quarters, are close quarters. It is not to say anything would happen, it most likely would not.

Something as simple as the open showers is an excellent case in point. On the level, whether or not someone might ogle in the shower is irrelevant. It introduces another dynamic in a situation that is already tough to develop without it.

Cohesion.

For me to think a openly gay male in such a situation would not be aware of this surrounding is absurd. They have urges like anyone else. Truthfully, it would be no different than having a straight shower with females, and think that he would not be ambivalent, recognizing that which surrounds him.

It is not about gay bashing. It is about recognizing what the potential problems might be, and deciding what is in the best interest as a whole.

re: #539 formercorpsman

I do understand what you're saying about cohesion, its a real issue...but... openly gay or not, there are gay men & women in the armed forces right now. They've been there always. In the barracks, the showers, the front lines, the mess halls. They serve for the same reasons straight men & women do: patriotism or they were drafted. In the past, it was unthinkable to the average grunt or officer, and gays were discharged. Clinton brought in `don't ask don't tell` which pleased nobody. Maybe it was just a transition to the next phase which is, `ya, whatever dude, just pass the fuckin' ammo`

After all, nothing has really changed. Soldiers have a job to do & they will get on with it.

Hey, real. Yeah, that Dan. I think he's hosting bowling for dollars on local access cable in Jersey now. If he does well, they'll let him read the weather.

For their leg-tingling coverage of the Obama campaign, and other misbehaviors too numerous to mention, the 2008 Idiotarian Award will go to ... the Mainstream Media.

I hereby predict that in 2010 the Idiotarian Award will go to the Obamster himself.
Even though the media will be on their knees in front of supportive of Barry the entire year and will be richly deserving of repeating the win, an idiotarian can only win once. S' sorry, but thems da rules.

Damn, I got to vote 9x (OKC, home, and Topeka) and the Georgia sideshow freak (sorry to any side show freaks if you're offended) Cynthia didn't get it. Perhaps next year Cynthia. You've got to really work at being a despicable human reject Cynthia. More moon-bat isms and crazy support for radical islam might just do it.

re: #542 Kenneth

Kenneth, I understand what you are saying, and it is true.

The issue is however, putting this out there front and center. To say it has always been there is quite frankly not the issue. Folks who serve know this, but our military has a standing policy about conduct, and especially as it relates to being in uniform.

Aside from any religious arguments, or moral arguments, do you think my premise is off the mark?

For me to think a openly gay male in such a situation would not be aware of this surrounding is absurd. They have urges like anyone else. Truthfully, it would be no different than having a straight shower with females, and think that he would not be ambivalent, recognizing that which surrounds him.

I happen to think this is important. I recall the quarters in boot camp. To say there was alpha male tension is about as big an understatement that anyone can make.

Changing it from don't ask don't tell will not play out well for overall recruitment, and readiness. I just don't. No offense, no insult, pure opinion on my part from experience.

You forgot an important candidate - Ron Paul supporters.

I demand a recount! There are plenty of pregnant radio buttons that were meant for Ben Stein!

The important think to remember is there are no winners with this award as all of the nominees are losers.

The wiiner: an option that shouldn't have been on the list.

At least it will be banned from future polls and, unless other beige generics like "Left wingers" or "Democrats" sneak their way on, we can concentrate on giving this award to a real person who deserves it.

To those that voted for the MSM - I'm speechless at your lack of imagination.

re: #89 buzzsawmonkey

And here's....Boy George singing, "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?"

Another blast from the past: "I'll Tumble For Ya"

The title and subject of the song are kind of along the same lines.
