Video: Hudson Crash from Coast Guard Camera

Video • Views: 6,552

Posted last night in our spinoff links by “freedomplow,” here’s a Coast Guard video that shows the US Airways Hudson River crash and the immediate rescue efforts; the plane appears at the left side of the image at about 2:00. The passengers really got out fast; by the time the camera operator saw the crash and zoomed in—30 seconds to a minute—they were already exiting and standing on the wings.

Liveleak Video

I couldn’t help wondering if any of the passengers tried to use their seat cushions as “floatation” devices.

This is a text book case of where despite a bad problem, everything else went as well as it could have. I hope this incident is studied by airline pilots for generations to come.

One of the most moving items about this story is the pilot's walking through the plane twice before exiting himself.

After the United Airlines DC10 landed at Siuox City I think they tried to recreate the scenario in the simulator and nobody was ever able to pilot that plane to any sort of survivable landing.

I'd be interested to see what happens when they plug this scenario into the simulators.

My guess is that this was another 1 in a million landing, thanks to a brilliant pilot, a lot of training and a little good luck

12 jcm  Sat, Jan 17, 2009 10:36:16am

Sully would look you in the eye and say, he was just doing his job, what he was trained for.

Which is why we still put people in the cockpit. A computer might be able to handle 99% of the job. But it's that 1% like this that make the pilots invaluable.

We actually practice ditching while flying as well; usually with a hard deck of around 1000 to 2000 feet.

In fairness, the FAA is doing their job. I don't think anyone has a bad thing to say about what the flight crew managed to do. But nevertheless, we need to learn everything we can about crew performance. If they were on anything it may change the FAA's perspective on the drugs used by the flight crew. The FAA's view of what is bad for a flight crew is extremely restrictive. It might not need to be that way.

Oh, and one other thing: what older pilots seem to lack in dexterity, they more than make up for in judgment. Among private pilots there is a research project going on right now for performance and medical standards for Octogenarians!

I wouldn't hesitate to get on board with Captain "Sulley" if he feels well enough to fly.

Neil Cavuto interviewed a crash survivor on Fox. It's in the vid taped archives.
The young man stated that ALL the passengers were calm, had removed their seat flotation devices and began to dis board the airbus in mere minutes.
Watch the vid. It is quite moving.... He was in a seat
at the back of the plane and threw all the spare life cushions up to the exit doors, and thus was the last passenger to exit the plane and enter a life raft.
He was Followed by the Captain and the Navigator.

I'm no expert on the airlines, still flying in the military but my guess is there was a lot less fuel for the short trip to Charlotte. The glide ratio doesn't depend on weight but on making sure you are at a constant airspeed; in my aircraft that is 180 kts which gives me 2.2 NM per 1000 ft of altitude drop.

Pilot touched down gently and didn't break anything. The fuel tanks empty or full would have kept it afloat for a long time. Once they opened the cabin doors they lost that buoyancy. If had broke up on impact we'd have a different story.

As long as the landing gear is up, the underside of the fuselage could still be sealed and full of air, so that buys the plane some flotation time.

I understand. However, this is why we have insurance. The insurance companies won't be thrilled, but they will be rather happy that everyone got out alive and with minimal injury. I don't think they'll have the slightest problem with Sully continuing to fly.

Oh heck no they won't. He will go through the typical FAA and NTSB process to make sure he wasn't drunk. high etc. (this is 100% normal and no reflection on his character or piloting abilities) and be back to work when he feels ready to step back into the cockpit. The key to the investigation will obviously be the FDR, the CVR and the engines.

You are probably right, but the lawyers can only file on behalf of an aggreived party. I could not imagine being on that flight and then filing a lawsuit. I hope the passengers avoid any lawyer's tempting offer of easy money.

This being a modern aircraft, didn't the computer help it put down smoothly, even dead-stick? I vaguely recall the Airbus series having some incidents where the computer was the problem, nice if it was more of a solution here.

They even have a ditch mode that seals off the bottom of the aircraft, but the pilot flew her in.

I was surprised that the infant survived, instead of becoming a projectile in the plane. I saw the Mother on TV, and she said the passenger next to her asked her permission to brace the child, and she turned him over.

On a fly by wire plane, is there really such a thing? Again, I had the impression that on the Airbus, even the simple commands were "mediated".

Airbus learned and Boeing always allowed the pilot to override and go outside the programmed flight parameters. In this case nothing would have been outside normal flight parameters. The engine warnings would have been squawking, and bitching betty would have been hollering about the low altitude and no gear, the ditch switch may silence those. The ditch checklist might included disabling those warnings.

"...boaters have an extraordinary code of ethics when it comes to helping other people in distress on water."

Watching this (unlike Mandy it worked immediately and well) I was struck by the sense of how American the scene was: within 10 minutes the plane evacuated and help has arrived from three different sources -- doing what needs to be done, doing it immediately, and doing it without being orordered to.

I know the Brits had their Dunkirk evacuation, but does anyone with world travel experience have a sense of whether or not this is as extraordinary as it appears?

After the tsunami in Indonesia, there was an interview with one fisherman who piloted his boat around and was able to save 10 or 15 people, but there was never any sense of an immediate rescue attempt like these pictures show. Also you always read about ferries tipping over with massive amounts of dead people, and there never seems to be ANY rescue attempt when that happens -- they just chug around several days later and scoop up the floating bodies.

I love this citizen journalism. The MSM is reduced to publishing boring pictures of blanket-wrapped survivors on land, and asking their perennial question, "how did it feel?" Meanwhile, at Charles' pajama-clad joint, you can see the Real Right Stuff.

Skyway Bridge Collapse 1980

Words and quotes from the article, all true. I was there.

Notice the picture of that yellow car, 14 inches from the edge.

"The doors flew open," Gattus recalled. "We all got out. We were on a sharp incline toward the water. I stuck my fingers through the grating and began to crawl away. I looked back, and Hornbuckle was still by the car. I yelled at him, 'What are you still doing there?" He said he was going back for his golf clubs."

I would say shock, is what made Mr. Hornbuckle do what he attempted. Just as the people on this aborted flght, grabbing for luggage.

Here's one lucky person:

The 1974 blue Ford Courier pickup that passed Hornbuckle had gone over the edge as well. Along with part of the bridge, the truck fell onto the Summit Venture's bow. The Courier then rolled into the water. The lone occupant, Wesley MacIntire, survived.

It haunted him for the final nine years of his life that he lived when others perished.

I've been flying privately for 20 years. I always thought the age 60 rule was ridiculous. And finally, it's over and done for. If Captain Haines and the Sioux City crash weren't evidence enough, Captain Sully and this flight crew's excellent performance on the Hudson river should have put all doubts to rest on this issue. You can be 40 years old and unfit, and you can be 75 years old and perfectly fit. This is why we were supposed to have medical certification for pilots. The age limit was arbitrary and stupid.

The wings ripped off because the wingtip caught the water (most likely on swell) and cartwheeled the aircraft. I'm sure sully was very cognizant of this and made sure he was wings level wen he touched down.

Incidentally, that pilot that FNC had on this morning talking about the crash was a complete and total moron.

Not sure if someone has posted this yet...

If I Wrote For The Huffington Post - Give Geese A Chanceby Andy Levy

In the wake of the events of 1-15, in which a wedge of Geese brought down a US Airways aircraft, here’s what you won’t be hearing about from the so-called “Mainstream Media”: We brought this on ourselves.

After an event such as this one, it’s important to look at the root causes: Why did the Geese attack us? Well, the truth is, for years we have been oppressing the Geese, using them for the fuel they provide for our bodies.

Boneless Goose Breast, Brandied Roast Goose, Roast Goose with Cumberland Sauce and Apricot Stuffing. And of course, the Christmas Goose. In the name of religion, we have been engaged in what can only be called a Crusade against the Geese. Is it any wonder that a few brave suicide Geese would seek revenge?

Under the neocon/neofascist Cheney-Bush administration, Goose consumption is up 1541%. Geese have been systematically deprived of their rights at a level never seen before. (Look around your workplace: do you see any Geese? Wouldn’t you be nervous if you did?) Reports of shameful anti-Goose activity are at an all-time high, mainly in the South and Midwest, of course.

The fact is, WE (and, of course, Israel) are responsible for the rise of militant Gooslam. Given our actions, is it any wonder that gaggles of Goslings would reject the teachings of moderate Goose leaders, when those leaders are perceived as being in the pocket of the West? Given our actions, is it any wonder that these young Gooslamists would flock to more assertive leaders, leaders whose commitment to their cause cannot be questioned? Given our actions, the rise of a “Goosama” was inevitable. We have only ourselves to blame. (Does anyone doubt that somewhere there’s a photo of Donald Rumsfeld shaking hands with a Goose?)

In the moments right after 1-15, many have been quick to praise the actions of the US Airways pilot. But the TRUTH is that our pilots have been instruments of the BUSHITLER illegal war against the Geese. I know the Repuglicans will attack me for saying this, but speaking TRUTH TO POWER of course makes me a true PATRIOT. And very brave.

Right now America’s relationship with other species couldn’t be worse. Like most Americans, often when I’m hiking I find myself apologizing to woodland creatures for the actions of our illegitimate government. And like the rest of the world, I’m hopeful that once President Obama takes office, things will change, and that we will end our imperialistic attempts at hegemony over the rest of the planet. After all, if he can sit down with Iran and Hezbollah, he can sit down with the Geese.

but then again that Ethiopian 767 was out of fuel and it's wings ripped right off so what do I know

The Ethiopian pilot had a hijacker with a gun screwed in his ear. He was not allowed to run the checklist. The Ethiopian landed no flaps, very hot. The hijackers were screaming to keep flying even though they were at of fuel.

Whatcha wanna do is go to a TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) practitioner. Don't go to a Westerner (round-eye, gwai lo) if you can help it. Alternately, swing by a Chinese herb shop and ask if they got any "Pe Min Kan Wan" (if you think it's allergies), or "Yin Chao" (if you're sure it's a cold). If they got an herbalist (see disclaimers above) on hand and he offers to mix you up a formula, take him up on the offer - the decoctions work better than the pills.

Excellent! But when I look around my workplace, I do see Geese. Great big honking hissing geese. You see, they are protected here and they LOVE LOVE LOVE our spoils pond, not to mention our plant is on the tip of a penisula. It's warm and clean, a goose Riviera! We have also provided Geese Huts near the pond because the damn things stay all winter, least some other goose clan discover this prime spot. During hatching season, Mama Geese are mean. MEAN. They will bite your head off, literally. There was one who laid her eggs right near an entrance door to the administration building. She would try to attack anyone who dared get too close, and her version of close was a pretty long way away. We had to come up with an alternate entrance (though a warehouse) until babies were born.

Ted Kennedy hits Cape Wind OK

Sen. Edward Kennedy served notice yesterday that the fight over a controversial wind-turbine project off Cape Cod is far from over - despite a key regulatory move that pushes the Cape Wind proposal closer to reality...........

......But Kennedy, whose family owns a compound in Hyannis, sounded defiant yesterday, despite criticism that the Senate’s “Liberal Lion” was opposing what many consider a major environmental initiative.

“I do not believe that this action by the Interior Department will be sustained,” said Kennedy in a statement.

From Muqata

7:46 PM -- Dr. El Ayash asks on Israel Channel 2, "Why didn't the soldiers fire only on the upper room of his house?" (which by default is where he is admitting the shooting was coming from).

6:31 PM -- Defense Ministry reporting IDF forces came under fire from the home/medical office building of Gazan (Israeli trained) Doctor El Ayash (who also worked at Seroka hospital in Be'er Sheva). IDF forces returned fire on the terrorist source and among the killed were Dr. Ayash 3 daughters.

Truly sorry about the girls ... however ...

Ojoe, it has the most unique body curvature and flatnose hull. The tail sticks up like a whale's tail. And the 3 engines are all forward and top, not aft. Very neat design. I want one!

Eh, they're around, ya just got's to look for 'em. Anywhere you've got Chinese or Vietnamese, you'll find this stuff. If you've got an asian grocery store and can stand the smells (a little strong for most, even for me) they've usually got what you need.

re: #207 ArmyWife

A couple months a year the Canadian Geese stay here and you can't hunt or hurt them in anyway..They must know they are protected God's little special birds cause they walk down the road like kings or something..
I roll down the window and scream 'Orange Sauce mofo's!' They fly like the wicked witch of the East just came on scene..After a couple of weeks and the same Geese hanging out at the same place you get to know them..
It's like Grand Torino when you drive by them at 2 MPH and point your finger and say..Get off my Road..punk!

Another Miracle: Rocket Hits Empty Synagogue

Netivot Sabbath worshippers are considering their prayers to have been worthy Saturday morning after a Hamas rocket exploded at a synagogue after worshipers had completed prayers and left the building. The Gaza Belt town is located approximately five miles from Sderot.

No one was physically wounded, but two people suffered shock, and the building sustained extensive damage.

Of course the UN will be outraged and demand war crimes trials.

Geese are a problem everywhere here in the midwest, especiallly the urban areas. Sadly they are very greasy to eat so a lot of people shy away from them. People love watching the "wildlife" until they realize they're standing in their shit.

So much has been poured into this man that there is no way he can possibly fulfill the hopes and dreams of his followers. He is already showing he is going to be a different President than he campaigned on with his cabinet picks. He won the nomination and developed the core of his supporters by running very left. As soon as he wrapped that up, he veered to the center and looks to stay there for a while. He will have to placate the leftwing of the Dems at some point. I do not envy his position, with all that is going on the in world. I just hope he doesn't screw things up even more than they already are. If he comes in and starts to raise taxes and increase federal spending as he is proposing, it's going to be a very tough 4 years for him and for us.

Great thing about the real mom & pop operations - they serve the customers. These folks considered the liquor laws a sort of interesting local custom or superstition. They respected it, of course, but it didn't mean anything to them.

A Chinese guy explained it to me once. "A business license by the register is the Western version of the chan chu. We have one there because everybody expects it to be there, but it's no more necessary to us than a money toad is to you."

The speed of the current and the potential for post crash disaster from collisions and mass drownings at any time during the rescue procedures makes the fatality free nature of the event even more remarkable.

I'm surprised that the all-knowing, all-scrutinizing, MSM, haven't remarked on the fact that the right wing passengers were the FIRST to be rescued. There must be something evil in that.

If Fox news [or ANY reporter] isn't fawning over Obama 100% of the time, you consider that "critical"?

Yes, you can--only handle one-party, 100% fawning propagandizing.
You might be happier watching NPR or other purveyors of fake but accurate news.

I did not say anything of the sort. I watch Fox just because I want a different prospective. Fox appeals to a more conservative audience and I sensed a tack to the middle and you may disagree. MSNBC is still unwatchable to me and I'm to the left of you.

Funny guy, and a very good businessman.

Great story!

My favorite Chinese restaurant here is owned/run by a Chinese-American born and bred from Connecticut. He has a liquor license so he can charge $7.50 for a glass of house Chardonnay and get away with it because his cook makes the best food on the planet. People pay a small fortune to even have lunch there.

Despite the 'economy'...the place was packed there last week for lunch. Go figure.

Pumping it before would be complicated. Air is more bouyant that fuel, as you pump it out the stability of the plane would change, and it would shift in unexpect ways. It would be safer to drain the tanks on a firm surface than pumping them out in the water.

From the looks of the crane a fueled plane would be a light lift.

I remember reading, in some book on Naval Aviation about incident during Korean. Pilot of a F9F Cougar had a flame out on final, ended up hitting the stern.
Huge explosion, plane parts every where. the Cockpit slide into the hanger deck, the pilot scrambles out and dives down the hatch to escape the fire, breaking his ankle in the process. He calls up and tells the air boss where he is the air boss calls him a sick fucker for joking around like that and hangs up.

I don't remember the book and haven't seen the story anywhere else, so I tend to think it's a sea tale.

I know of a similar type of incident because it happen to a classmate of my dads and he had pictures and everything. He drove F-86s in Korea. The NorKos would string cables across valleys to discourage pilots from going low. He snagged a cable and ripped the belly off his plane. He lands back a base long and hot goes off the end of the runway in a ball of fire. The part in front of the engine, nose and cockpit slide clear on the far side of the fire ball. He being a little in shock knows he has to check in at the infirmary. So he grabs a jeep someone left at the scene while put the fire and heads over.

He gets to the infirmary and they are setting up for a gravely injured pilot and tell him to sit and wait. He did and dozes off. Meanwhile everyone is combing the wreckage for his body. He a bunch of people pissed at him for scaring the crap out of them.

Cool!

The Dornier DO-24 has a fascinating history. It was designed in Nazi Germany before World War 2, but for the Dutch rather than the German government. The Dutch wanted an advanced seaplane for service in the Netherlands Indies (now Indonesia). It was put into production in the Netherlands and about 30 had been built before the Germans overran the country in 1940. The Germans kept the line going for their own use and the aircraft were used by Luftwaffe air-sea rescue and patrol units throughout World War 2. It also went into production in occupied France.

The Dutch DO-24s that had been delivered to the Indies were on hand when the Japanese attacked in 1941, and the aircraft saw heavy combat. Five escaped to Australia and were taken into the RAAF as the A-24. The DO-24 therefore has the distinction of fighting on both sides in the war.
Twelve were sold to Spain during the war and remained in service into the 1970s. The one in the video was bought back by Dornier and extensively modernized in an attempt to market an updated version.
Seaplane enthusiasts assert that the DO-24's rough water handline characteristics have never been equalled to this day.

Maybe not. Next time, the pilot will have trained on a simulation which incorporates everything learned from this event. Now we know just what speed, what attitude etc. works when you have to ditch. Next time won't be nearly as much a matter of conjecture, hope, and intuition. We'll have it down to a science.

Still, this is a proud day for New York City. Flight crew, ferry crew, coast guard, and passengers all did themselves proud. Unlike the disgraceful spectacles that have unfolded during various cruise ship accidents around the world [crew abandoning ship without telling the passengers, then, every man for himself, that sort of thing], this batch of passengers evacuated the women and children first, the crew stood to their duties unflinchingly, and the captain made doubly sure he was the last man off.

NYC may be politically liberal, but the city has shown again, as it showed on 9/11, that it has the Right Stuff.

An amphibian like the DO 24 is the most flexible plane there is in terms of operability.

re: #476 lostlakehiker

A VERY proud day for NYC, and do not think that any of those ferry captins/crew, FDNY or NYPD like being lumped in with the liberals. Everyone I saw on TV looked like all the McCain voters I know in NYC.

As to the seat cushions, the NYT had excellent reports in today's Metro section (NYT IS a local paper in this case). One about the passengers, and some passengers DID take their seat cushions. Another about the private ferry boats - 1st captain who saw it called Coast Guard and got to the plane in three minutes. Good thing, NYC 911 has problems when location is a body of water... Another article about the Captain.

Captain Sullenberger, former fighter pilot, is America's hero today for his quick thinking, excellent judgment, vast experience, and calm leadership. Maybe now the media will stop making fun of former fighter pilots like John McCain. Timing really is everything.

The captains and crews of the private ferry boats who also displayed the same qualities of calm professional instinctive (based on experience) action are also my role models for America. FDNY is ALWAYS terrific. Even the NYPD commandeered a Circle Line cruise ship, which had the capacity to complete the rescue.

Hudson River is actually an estuary and does not freeze, but people were up to their chests in 31 degree water. The two women who fell into Hudson were rescued by FDNY water rescue crew diving from their helicopter which got there in less than 15 minutes from Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, at least 15 miles away.

Captain Sullenberger has nerves of steel - to be able to turn left over the Bronx Zoo, left again over Wave Hill Park on the Hudson and skim over the GWB with only 900 feet clearance, with no power? (my apartment was a few blocks away from this - a very hilly part of The Bronx)

New York wants the Captain to replace Hillary, but I bet he gets a nod for the NTSB and makes everyone revisit that rule about pilots retiring at 60. How about Air Force 1?

Surely there is a good liberal lawyer joke to come out of this...

and, so far, no claims that the Canadain geese that 'attacked' the engines
were really agents trained by Mossad to get US media off the Gaza story...

re: #85 DeafDog

Sad as it is, I'd have no trouble believing that someone on the plane will sue somebody for something. Probably not the captain, but the airlines, the manufacturer, etc. Remember, when something bad happens to you, SUE!

Hudson River? Twin towers in the background?

hummmmm

I admit to not being a NYC skyline expert, but damn if they don't look like the twin towers. What the hell?

487 Charles Johnson  Sat, Jan 17, 2009 6:53:45pm

Those are not the WTC towers, folks. Wrong part of Manhattan, and the WTC was more than a quarter again as high.

But I think I see Barack Obama's birth certificate on the deck of that boat in the foreground...

re: #487 Charles

I had the same thought as Sarr and Cincinnati, but I have never been east of Columbus, Ohio. It's only my second post and already I feel so provincial.

How sad it is that we have to be skeptical of what we see and read anymore thanks to our lovely drive-by-media.

re: #489 sarr

I'm not skeptical at all about the Hudson ditching, but I noticed those buildings. I never thought they were the WTC and I do not question Obama's birth certificate.

I clearly posted that spinoff link last night, and a search for 'freedomplow' shows his last post to have been a couple of years ago.

Is Freedomplow using me as a proxy? Whassup?

That changed quickly. The crew got two doors open. One water slide deployed automatically. The other had to be activated by hand. Passengers grabbed life preservers and seat cushions.

Well this if it hasn't been noticed before?
