re: #50 Charles

From the BBC, Dec. 2 2008;

Apple has urged Mac owners to use anti-virus software.

In a note posted on its support site in late November, Apple said it wanted to "encourage" people to use anti-virus to stay safe online.

The move is widely seen as a response to the growing trend among cyber criminals of booby-trapping webpages that can catch out Mac users.

Before now Mac users have been largely free of the security problems that plague Microsoft's Windows.

Fresh threat

The support note recommends that Mac owners install one or more of three anti-virus products.

Advice on the site said: "Apple encourages the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the whole virus writing process more difficult."

Apple recommended users try McAfee VirusScan, Symantec Norton Anti-Virus 11, or Intego VirusBarrier X5.

The vast majority of malicious programs circulating online are aimed at Microsoft's Windows, largely because the software is used by so many people.

A handful of viruses have been written that targets Mac's OSX, but most have been demonstration versions only and few have had any significant impact on Apple users.

One virus, known as AppleScript.THT, could take control of a Mac and grab screenshots or keystrokes.

However, in recent months, hi-tech criminals have signalled a change in tactics away from e-mail borne viruses. Instead, many are infiltrating popular webpages in a bid to infect the machine of any and every visitor.

Many seek to steal valuable information such as login names, passwords or game accounts instead of trying to install themselves on a machine.

Hence my increased concern...

re: #68 Occasional Reader

From the BBC, Dec. 2 2008;

Hence my increased concern...

ClamAV?

Note, though:

DEREKCURRIE At this point in time it is important to note that ClamXav is over a year behind in its definitions of Mac malware. It is able to detect and remove Trojan OSX.RSPlug.A, discovered in September 2007. However, malware definitions for more recent Trojans are not built in. Specifically, there are no definitions for Trojan OSX.RSPlug variants B through E, Trojan OSX.Lamzev.A or OSX.Trojan.PokerStealer. Therefore, I consider it practically pointless to use it to detect and remove Mac OS X specific malware.

I am attempting to find a source for the missing definitions in order to have them provided to the Clamav developers. Wish me luck.

Meanwhile, as usual, ClamXav is a very good free anti-malware program for detecting and removing Windows specific malware.

An alternative FREEWARE anti-malware program for Mac OS X is iAntiVirus from PC Tools. It ONLY runs on 10.5 Leopard, but is entirely up-to-date.

Of the commercial anti-malware programs for general use, I only recommend Intego VirusBarrier, despite its cost. For business/enterprise users I recommend Sophos Anti-Virus.

I attempt to discuss current Macintosh security concerns at my blog:

Okay, so here's the Scotsman and condom joke:

A Scotsman goes to a pharmacy and plops down a condom on the counter.

Pharmacist (chemist in the original) quotes him a price. Scotsman thanks him, and takes condom with him.

Scotsman returns a few days later, plunks down condom again.

Okay, so here's the Scotsman and condom joke:

A Scotsman goes to a pharmacy and plops down a condom on the counter.

"It's got a hole innit," he says. "How much to mend it?"

Pharmacist (chemist in the original) quotes him a price. Scotsman thanks him, and takes condom with him.

Scotsman returns a few days later, plunks down condom again.

"And how much for a new one?

Pharmacist (chemist in the original) quotes him a price. Scotsman thanks him, and takes condom with him.

Scotsman returns a few days later, no condom this time.

"The regiment have voted, and we want a new one."

Naw, Blago ( allegedly) would make f'in sure that these f'in guys gave the right kickbacks to the f'in good ol' USA on any deal he negotiated. Besides Putin would probably pick him as his #2 to replace that lightweight he has now.
Alternative, Blago as head of the UN. Perfect fit !

Blatant Blago, too crude for prime time but definitely typical Chicago pol.

The real reason Bill Clinton pardoned Marc Rich

Still, it would have been a refreshing change from the usual confirmation minuet if instead of humbly apologizing, Holder had tartly instructed the buffoonish Specter, his fellow senators, the press, and the public about the actual circumstances of the Rich affair. He might have started with the fact that continuous lobbying on Rich's behalf from the highest Israeli leaders and their American friends -- among whom Specter no doubt counts himself -- became even more intense in the days before Clinton left office. He could have noted that such pressures coincided with Clinton's efforts to conclude a peace agreement between the Israelis and Palestinians. And he could have explained to Specter that Rich's deals in Iran and Iraq were often related to his other role -- as an asset of the Mossad who gathered intelligence and helped to rescue endangered Jews from those regimes.

/ye gods, what manner of blasphemous, revisionist bull[expletive deleted] is this?

C'mon Deaf Dog, we have to know what Obama says in order to dissect it and discuss it rationally with his blind, deaf or dumb followers.

All around us people will are, will be or are terminally dumbstruck with Obama's oratory;

WE must remain aware of what Obama says, and thus ready to be loyal counter-programming to those we LOVE.

There's only one problem with your last paragraph, and that's Obama's resemblance to Lord Dorwin in Asimov's Foundation:

“That,” replied Hardin, “is the interesting thing. The analysis was the most difficult of the three by all odds. When Holk, after two days of steady work, succeeded in eliminating meaningless statements, vague gibberish, useless qualifications - in short, all the goo and dribble - he found he had nothing left. Everything canceled out.

“Lord Dorwin, gentlemen, in five days of discussion didn’t say one damned thing, and said it so you never noticed. There are the assurances you had from your precious Empire.”

With thanks to a link in this morning's Power Line for the reminder of that effete and diabolically diplomatic fop!

Two local residents charged in GOP national convention incident
By The Associated Press

Posted: Jan. 17, 2009 10:41 a.m.

Two Wisconsin residents and a Texas resident have been accused of throwing a large road sign off a bridge during the Republican National Convention.

Twenty-three-year-old Bradley Crowder of Austin, Texas, 23-year-old Karen Meissner of Menomonee Falls and 18-year-old Christina Vana of West Bend were charged Friday with aiding and abetting second-degree assault.

According to a criminal complaint, protesters picked up sandbags used to hold down a street sign and used them to try to stop buses carrying delegates to the Xcel Energy Center on Sept. 1.

The three are accused of throwing a metal sign off the Marion Street bridge over Interstate 94 and the 5th Street exit ramp. It landed three feet from an officer who was trying to remove a sandbag thrown by a protesters.

Maybe it depends on what you mean by "succeed." It would be better if he moderates and does the right thing. That, I agree with you on.

I still want his popularity to fade to the point where he does not win re-election. Is that a failure? Maybe not. But I don't want the things he is advocating to become reality.

here's why...

First, the main points of his rhetoric are expanding welfare and nationalizing the healthcare system. This may work in the short term, but the economics of nationalization will eventually collapse the system. Like the subsidized mortgages from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac or the Social Security ponzi scheme, it will be a time bomb that will explode later. I don't want Obama to "succeed" so our children to clean up the mess.

Second, he got elected by being vitiolic against many things that I think were right and important - specifically the Iraq war. He is part of the Reid/Pelosi/Durbing clique. When the war was mildly popular, mind you, he voted to fund it. Then, he saw political advantage in being against it and he turned. He is tied to the hip with moveon.org. If you want him to succeed, you also want all of those organizations to succeed.

The common man may not avail himself of too many words. Such education breeds envy, philosophy, and capitalism in the weak mind of the proletariat. Games such as Scrabble and Monopoly are reserved for the elite so they may discern the goals and thinking of the capitalist roaders.

If everyone, gave every President a fair chance, we'd be a better nation. I often wonder how different a country we would have been with the support GW had after 9-11. Had he have been less anxious to go to war in Iraq, and vetoed a few spending bills he could have kept some of those high approval numbers and who know what would have happened. Obama has those high numbers right now, I can only hope he does not squander them. I never hated Bush, or thought he did not love his country, just that he made some poor choices.

Right, my expectations for Obama are very low. I hope that he surprises me. The job may mold him.
The fact that I don't like him does not mean that I should not try to be objective, but based on his past words & actions , I believe that we are looking at a disaster.

We have a local radio guy who thinks he's a combo of Rush Limbaugh and Paul Harvey. He read a piece this morning that went on and on about "In a few days, a black man will be moving to a new address...at last we have a black man being judged by the content of his character, not the color of his skin... if this had happened only 15 years ago, there would have been riots in the streets..." and at the end he said, "Yes, at last OJ Simpson is going to jail. What? What did you think I was talking about?" He got me, I laughed.

In my case there is no hatred. As you said, I disagree strongly with his politics, but I don't hate him. The comment had more to do with the MSM's coverage of Obama. They treat him like the second coming. To hear them talk you would think that he is going to solve all of the worlds problems with a single passing of his hand. For the sake of the country that I love, I sincerely hope that he is a terrific President, I just don't have much hope that that will be the case.

My wife just sent me this.

T'was the month after Christmas,
and all through the house,

Nothing would fit me,
not even a blouse.

The cookies I'd nibbled,
the chocolate I'd taste
At the holiday parties
had gone to my waist .

When I got on the scales
there arose such a number!
When I walked to the store
(less a walk than a lumber),

I'd remember the marvellous meals I'd prepared;
The gravies and sauces and beef nicely rared,
The wine and the rum balls, the bread and the cheese
And the way I'd never said, "No thank you, please."

As I dressed myself in my husband's old shirt
And prepared once again to do battle with dirt...
I said to myself, as I only can,
"You can't spend a winter, disguised as a man!"

So, away with the last of the sour cream dip.
Get rid of the fruit cake, every cracker and chip.
Every last bit of food that I like must be banished
Till all the additional ounces have vanished.

I won't have a cookie, not even a lick.
I'll want only to chew on a long celery stick.
I won't have hot biscuits, or corn bread, or pie.
I'll munch on a carrot and quietly cry.

I'm hungry, I'm lonesome, and life is a bore...
But isn't that what January is for?
Unable to giggle, no longer a riot.
Happy New Year to all, and to all a good diet.

Hidden in your question is the answer you desire, grasshopper.

Life is not a campaign. His 'audacity' to hope to defeat Hillary seems to be his biggest accomplishment. Yet, based on his rhetoric he's a new age politician who can bridge all gaps. He's even going to lower the sea levels and cool the atmosphere (his words, not mine).

His retoric is all about entitlement, not accomplishment. So the masses think they will no longer have to worry about paying for gas or their mortgage. These are the throngs screaming for him. And his supporters are too hopeful because he deliberately allowed them to be, leading them on conning them. Con man is short for "confidence man" - get it - a con man will build up his victims confidence in his ability to benefit them FAR beyond his ability to do so - and he does it knowingly.

I thought that the red-headed woman in a Victorian gown was gonna go in the direction of spoofing Madonna's "Vogue" (i.e., lifting up the gown to bump-and-grind her woowoo at the President Elect).

But of course, that was like a half-dozen career-reboots/image-makeovers for Madonna, and thoroughly Old Millennium.

P.S. Worse than Old Millennium, it's pre-Clinton, even! Until checking on YouTube just now, I'd forgotten that the version of "Vogue" I had in mind was from the 1990 MTV Awards:

You understand don't you Obama has no concept of the Constitution?

But, the Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth, and of more basic issues such as political and economic justice in society. To that extent, as radical as I think people try to characterize the Warren Court, it wasn't that radical. It didn't break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the Founding Fathers in the Constitution, at least as it's been interpreted, and the Warren Court interpreted in the same way, that generally the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties. Says what the states can't do to you. Says what the federal government can't do to you, but doesn't say what the federal government or state government must do on your behalf.

Giving accolades, deserved or not, and ignoring anything negative just because of skin color. Obama just perpetuates the "I didn't really do anything for it, but give it to me anyway" mentality. Israel to begin unilateral Gaza cease-fire at 2 A.M.

Olmert said that "if Hamas entirely ends its rocket fire on Israel, Israel will consider an IDF withdrawal from the Gaza Strip." If that did not occur, he said, "The IDF will continue to operate in order to protect our citizens."

Most rocket launching areas are now controlled by IDF, he said.

re: #301 MandyManners

Sunstein also argued in favor of “eliminating current practices such as greyhound racing, cosmetic testing, and meat eating, most controversially.”

He concluded his Harvard speech by expressing his “more ambitious animating concern” that the current treatment of livestock and other animals should be considered “a form of unconscionable barbarity not the same as, but in many ways morally akin to, slavery and mass extermination of human beings.” Sound familiar?

Bull shit. If he understood the Constitution, he would never had said this. The Founding Fathers were never for redistribution of wealth or giving the government the power to control and distribute liberty. He has it exactly backwards. Probably you should stop using Media Matters as your source.

And that hasn't shifted and one of the, I think, tragedies of the civil rights movement was because the civil rights movement became so court-focused I think there was a tendency to lose track of the political and community organizing and activities on the ground that are able to put together the actual coalition of powers through which you bring about redistributive change. It is not unexplainable it is scripted, rehearsed, focus grouped, polled, and packaged. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the fainting was paid for, no proof, none at all, but it would fit. I thought for a while that he was just another politician, then came the 'speech' in Philly where he called me, and all like me, racists, then he re-iterated it later that same week on WIP, a radio station in Philly. That speech, who all point to as his shining moment should have been exactly that, but in a way that destroyed his chances to lead with equality in mind.

One race is angry, one race resentful...chosen words, carefully chosen, and slobbered over as the 'first time these things were said'.

Bull, he is a racist, pure and simple, and he has racist backers who scripted this thing from the first moment we heard his name. The speech at the DNC in 2004 asked for Blacks to pick up books and not degrade those who did, the speech in Philly in 2008 told Blacks they didn't have to do that any more, they had the right to be angry.

He will be my President in less than a week, I wish him well in a very tough job, and I hope he does not lean too heavily upon his racist tendencies as he tries to lead the greatest nation on the Earth.

Media Matters?, didn't bother.

Media Matters has not always been forthcoming about its high-profile backers. In particular, the group has long labored to obscure any financial ties to George Soros. But in March 2003, the Cybercast News Service (CNS) detailed the copious links between Media Matters and several Soros "affiliates"—among them MoveOn.org, the Center for American Progress, and Peter Lewis. Confronted with this story, a spokesman for the organization explained that "Media Matters for America has never received funding directly from George Soros" (emphasis added), a transparent evasion.

The National Prayer Service and the Wahhabi Lobby

Ingrid Mattson, president of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), will deliver a prayer at the National Cathedral during the National Prayer Service on January 21st. The event is part of the festivities for the inauguration of Barack Obama, which occurs January 20. A convert to Islam, Mattson directs the Macdonald Center for the Study of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations at Hartford Seminary.

ISNA has close ties with the Muslim Brotherhood, a radical Islamist group, and was named an un-indicted co-conspirator in U.S. v Holy Land Foundation, a case that uncovered covert financing of the terrorist group Hamas. Since her election as ISNA president in 2006, Mattson's apologias for the radical Wahhabi sect of Islam have gained a much wider audience.

Prayer speaker from group feds link to Hamas

One of the religious leaders invited to address Barack Obama’s inaugural prayer service Wednesday heads an Islamic group named by federal prosecutors as a co-conspirator in a terrorism-fundraising trial in Texas.

Ingrid Mattson, president of the Islamic Society of North America, is scheduled to join Christian ministers and Jewish rabbis offering prayers for the new president and his family during a service at the National Cathedral in Washington, organizers announced Friday.

Mattson’s group calls itself “the largest Muslim umbrella organization” in North America. However, in May 2007, federal prosecutors included ISNA on a list of nearly 300 co-conspirators filed in a criminal case charging that the Holy Land Foundation of Richardson, Texas, funneled more than $12 million to Hamas.

The U.S. government designated Hamas as a terrorist group in 1995.

If you truly want to boycott the MSM it is very easy to do right from your home. Just activate the Parental Control on your TV or Cable Box! Select the MSM channels you don't want to watch and you won't be seeing them even when you're surfing.

But, if you keep yourself completely in the dark by never watching the MSM, you will not ever "Know Thy Enemy". I believe it is very important to be aware of what the MSM is saying so that we can refute all the lies.

Also, if you do elect to cast out the MSM with the parental controls, ask a neighbor or moonbat friend to put in the 4 digit code. Then you won't be tempted to go back!

There's a half dozen links there and I'm not interested in clicking every one.

Obama's rhetoric is about redistributive justice. At least 5 or 6 comments above show that point. If you want to make some counter claim that he's really about grass-roots, building yourself up Horatio Alger stories, back it up with a direct link if you want your POV taken seriously.

Here's a more direct conwebwatch.tripod.com...] target="_blank">link

I wonder why reporters don't watch or read the news. Reminds me of the startled look on Charlie Gibson's face when Palin correctly answered "What Bush Doctrine?"

IIRC, Palin's response to the ambiguous question was something like, With respect to what?

OK guys, time for me to leave this thread before I get anymore down dings for the discussion. It was entertaining and informational though.

...and as far as ohb goes, it's about time we had a prez of a different nationality.

You mean he's really not an American? What nationality is he?

Obama seems to be a wandering affectation, something that Baudrillard would have dreamed up in his The Precession of Simulacra . He is always imitating someone else, first its Reagan now its Lincoln and tomorrow Martin King.

Who were they imitating?
