That's going to take some time getting used to, but he IS President and I respect the Office of the President far too much to consider otherwise.
The speech?
It will be elevated to the heights of lofty rhetoric. Academia will study it for generations to come as the shining example of public speaking.
The reality will be so much different. There are only a handful of inaugural speeches that are noteworthy for what was said. I suspect this will be known more for who said it than what was said.

Well, on that note... yes, I will fully concur that this has some relation to King's dream. It seemed impossible in 1963 for a black (mixed race, whatever) man to become President. In that regard... without relation to this particular candidate's qualifications, plans, ideology... we've come an awful long way.

Hey, the WhiteHouse.gov is getting to be like a blog:
Change has come to WhiteHouse.gov
Welcome to the new WhiteHouse.gov. I'm Macon Phillips, the Director of New Media for the White House and one of the people who will be contributing to the blog.
A short time ago, Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States and his new administration officially came to life. One of the first changes is the White House's new website, which will serve as a place for the President and his administration to connect with the rest of the nation and the world.
Millions of Americans have powered President Obama's journey to the White House, many taking advantage of the internet to play a role in shaping our country's future. WhiteHouse.gov is just the beginning of the new administration's efforts to expand and deepen this online engagement....

Opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu, tipped in the polls to become the next prime minister, said Tuesday that US President-elect Barack Obama understands the "distress" of Israelis.
"I took away the impression that Barack Obama understood our distress very well as well as the cruelty of the enemies we face," the former Israeli prime minister army radio just hours before Obama's inauguration.

This was an excellent program on last night about the White House, and Laura Bush hosted the tour, which included the Keno brothers of Antiques Roadshow fame. President Bush also appeared at several instances to comment on the house - his home for the past eight years - and his humor shone through.
I'm sure he's going to miss all the people who work behind the scenes to make his life as easy as possible - from the waiters and staff who prepare the meals to those who get his wardrobe ready to all those who are there to protect him and keep him informed 24/7/365. I'm sure he isn't going to miss the rest of it one bit. Least of all the political crap he took from the Left, which was personal and not just the usual claptrap.
If you want a friend in DC, get a dog. We got two. /President Bush

Just back from a very surreal morning, at the assisted living facility where I work on Tuesday mornings.
We served up a breakfast buffet and I watched the inauguration with all of the residents, most of whom are in their seventies and beyond. Most were sharing memories of administrations past.
One old black gentleman in a wheelchair, a WWII vet, was dressed up in his best suit and tie and he was holding a small, faded American flag in his had during the entire event. He started crying when the Obama children came out. At the completion of the address, he stood up out of his wheelchair and applauded, with tears rolling down his cheeks.
I left shortly after 12:30 and sent a text message to my Marine son, in honor of his new Commander in Chief. It said "Godspeed to our next President, and God Bless the United States of America".
Couple of minutes later I got a text message back from him. It said "Indeed. He'd better not fuck this one up!"
My own personal observation:
Michelles' Inauguration dress was quite attractive, I'll give her that.
I'm not sure whose jaw was sticking out further, though... hers or his.

It was a gold/yellow coat/dress ensemble. Don't believe the 'brocade' descriptions - it looked more like applique lace - but it had some pearls/glitter going on with silver jewelry-like trim at the neck and cuffs.. It's very pretty, but more appropriate for formal evening - not formal daywear

After all the talk about how 4-5 million will show in DC for the inauguration, what is the figure being bandied about? More than 1 million. You know what - that's about as many that showed for the Bush inaugurations. And the Clintons....
All the hype, and the reality is so much less.
Still a record
"Police had projected crowds ranging between 1 and 2 million for the inauguration.
In 1981, President Ronald Reagan's inauguration drew about 500,000 people, and President Bill Clinton's 1993 inauguration drew about 800,000 people, according to park service estimates."

As I indicated, I had the kids read the first inaugural. Fairly dry and fully of really big words, but as I explained to the kids, the first inaugural was nothing like this one.

Indeed. After all the talk about how 4-5 million will show in DC for the inauguration, what is the figure being bandied about? More than 1 million.
You know what - that's about as many that showed for the Bush inaugurations. And the Clintons....
All the hype, and the reality is so much less.
I have a feeling we're gonna have 4 years like this. Everything about Obama has been hype and myth. Eventually more and more people should wake up....kind of like is apparently starting to happen with "global warming/climate change/carbon dioxide."

The minister's remarks are a paraphrase of an old joke in the black community referring to white racism:
"If you're black, get back.
If you're brown, stick around.
If you're white, you're all right."
His paraphrase is a thumb in the eye of white people, yet whites don't understand it. Interesting that reverse racism rears its ugly head so early, and so publicly and officially, during Obama's inauguration.

You stood on your morales. Good for you. While the last 8 years were not the best years we could have had from a Republican President, they restored some dignity to an office that was otherwise tarnished for life by the generation benefited most by the generation prior that sacrificed the most.

People have missed another milestone. its official: the curse of Tecumseh is no more.
For those who never heard of this, its a legend designed to explain a curious phenomenon: from 1840-1860, whoever was elected in a zero year, died in office. So the legend goes that this is the curse of Tecumseh, who hated (for good reason) William Henry Harrison, who was elected president in 1840. It was reportedly so cold on inauguration day and Harrison went on to make something like a 2 hour speech in this retched weather, that he then caught pneumonia and died about a month later. one of my professors back in the day said that with the state of medicine back then, doctors were so bad that if you stayed well enough to stay half a step a head of them, you had half a chance. Harrison's demise was probably hastened by the quality of medicine at the time.
Then for a long time every president elected every 20 years after that died in office. Lincoln was the next. Garfield after him, McKinley, Harding, FDR (died of natural causes), Kennedy. And then Regan came along, and the fact he was shot, but didn't die was said to mean that the curse was weakening. And with Bush never even having been shot, you can say the curse seems to have dissipated.
Of course one smart alec round the office theorized that the shoe throwing incident was the last gasp of the curse. mmm... maybe. But there you are.
And, no, i don't believe any of it, but i admit it is a weird thing with those presidential deaths.

I do hope they apply the same rigor and diligence to telling us the details on the Obama's........

Somewhat OT...but I get these emails daily from the Jerusalem Prayer Team. I just wanted to share:
Dear Christina,
Today is the inauguration of President Barack Obama. Tomorrow, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will launch her Middle East peace plan under his direction. Please encourage President Obama to stand with Israel.
It is critical that Israel is NOT demonized while the terrorists are lionized. I am asking you to post a “Support Israel” comment today on the YouTube website. Also, please forward this to everyone on your list and ask them to do the same.
This is the final email I will send you on this topic. It is extremely important.
Please read the (uncorrected) comments below. You will understand why this is so critically important.
Comments:
illegal state of israel is a terrorist organisation lead by gangstersAND THAT IS A FACT, they know that they will be eleminated from that holly land THATS WHY THEY TARGET CHILDREN AND WOMEN DELIPRATLEY AND BLAME IT ON HAMAS,CHILDREN ARE THE FUTURE AND THEY WANT TO KILL THE FUTURE,but they will not be able to do so and their time is soon. The stupid who say they are defending them selfs, every body knows that jews are the biggest liars &gangsters on earth they are the terrorists not muslims

Israel: is the new neo nazi jewish a-hole land grabbing freaks of the modern world. They are harsh people who torture, imprison and murder Palestinian people specially women and children and oppressed and starved them to bits and pieces. Take for example Gaza. A modern day ghetto run by Jewish cruel inhuman torture masters. (Romeo of Phlippines.)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please rate the video and post a blog. As you can see, Israel is watching this video as well as terrorists. Soon they will have rallied hundreds of hate-filled responses to try to kill this video.
Please click on the link below and watch the video; then, post your response.

Hamas holds victory rallies as UN chief tours Gaza
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — The U.N. chief inspected the devastation wrought by Israel's onslaught in Gaza on Tuesday, leading a moment of silence at the smoldering U.N. headquarters, as the territory's militant Hamas rulers, triumphant at having survived, held victory rallies amid the ruins.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, appearing stern and saddened at a ceremony at the burned out U.N. headquarters in Gaza, demanded a full investigation into strikes on United Nations facilities. Ban asked the crowd to honor victims of the offensive, who included nearly 40 Palestinians who had sought refuge at a U.N. school shelled by Israel.
"It has been especially troubling and heartbreaking for me as secretary-general that I couldn't end this faster," he said. He warned the truce is fragile, and called on Israel and Hamas to "exercise maximum restraint and nurture the cease-fire."

re: #361 Guy_Philly
being a Fed, i have a new boss. "Meet the new boss, same (not) as the old boss." Americal got fooled again.
doctorhurd.com : Mr. More-of-the-Same
Our poor President. (I'm referring to the outgoing one). He (and we, mercifully) have just 3 days to go. To look at him in photo-ops with the new President, he looks like a child at his own birthday party. He looks like he might actually think the new President's (current) popularity is an extension of his own. He might even believe that his own policies are to continue under the new President.
Of course, in a way he's right. After all, look at the policies coming our way: Pacifism towards Iran -- the same policy practiced by the current Secretary of State under the current administration; expansion of government health care -- the same policy begun by the massive expansion of Medicare a few years back; increased regulation of business -- the same policy instituted with Sarbanes-Oxley, a bill made possible by a Republican Congress and Republican President. And let's not forget the biggest transfer of private wealth to a government in all of human history, last October. Much more of that will be coming, but only because of what happened in October.
Let's face it. What we're really getting is more of the same. While it's easy enough to mock the curiously vacant expression on the outgoing President's face, it's tempting to conclude that he knows something we don't: That he was, in fact, the predecessor to the real thing, the lead-up act for the Anointed One of socialism, who is about to take over the throne of what was once the American republic.
The joke is really on the people who are ecstatic over the new President. They think they're getting something new, cool and different. In fact, they're just getting more of the same: A LOT more of it. They don't seem to know this, or care. They talk in terms of good and evil. The guy who's leaving office, they scream, is evil -- for spending a mere, say, $700 billion on government redistribution. Now, when a new President comes in and decides to spend, say, $1 trillion -- no, make that $3 trillion! -- on redistribution of wealth -- well, there's a moral man for you! When the "conservative" white guy concedes the free world to Muslim terrorist states, he's an idiotic warmonger. (How they get this, I'll never know). When a new, cool "liberal" guy does the same thing -- why, he's the best thing since ... Jimmy Carter.
When logic goes out the window for an individual, those of us in the mental health profession conclude: There's mental illness for you. When it happens to an entire society, the same conclusion seems reasonable to draw. Under the rule of logic, contradictions cannot exist. Under those who push the new conceptual order, "change" and more of the same are one and the same thing.
In a paradoxical and twisted sort of way: They're right.

But history... yes, she will look kindly upon Bush. It may take 1 to 2 more generations down the road, but folks, history will bring honor to his name and cause. I can only pray that the next four years are not a lesson learned due to the loss of lives thanks to policies built on the American WMD, political correctness, but that we learn, quickly, the error of the liberal way and return to unappologetic, pragmatic governing practices!

You stood on your morales. Good for you. While the last 8 years were not the best years we could have had from a Republican President, they restored some dignity to an office that was otherwise tarnished for life by the generation benefited most by the generation prior that sacrificed the most.
If your business was local, I would be taking my family there tonight for dinner. Instead of losing her business, you would be gaining 5 more customers as a result.

Utter classlessness. I wonder how all those white kids being forced to watch this crap in school thought of it? Or have they already been "sensitivity trained" into self loathing? How about the Asians?
Kids are pretty smart, and they know which kids in school do their work, read at grade level, and care about achievement. Let's just say that it hasn't been white kids or teachers pushing black kids to the bottom of the test score pile.

Here's a frightening line (with context):
To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West — know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.
Let's hope he requires them to unclench their fist first, but that would be a precondition, wouldn't it.

Someone enlighten me, what mutual interest do we have with the Muslim World?
What common goal do we seek?
A Liberal might knee-jerk respond "peace". But does peace to Muslims mean an end to violence or an end to Israel?
Maybe he means the other Muslim interest? Higher oil prices.
Maybe the interest is subservient women?

Pardon if this was covered before.
BHO did not defend the market. He declared ex cathedra that the argument is over and then proclaimed that the market would be tolerated. That is not to say it is supported or admired as an organizing principle that generates both wealth and equity. He will only tolerate the market as a cash cow to survive under regulation for the benefit of other programs and social mechanisms that he finds morally superior.

I'm positive it's an ambulance. If you make it to the end of the clip it turns on the siren before it drives away. What I can't figure out is if the figures in black shirts are Hamas fighters (probably) or if they hop in the ambulance before it drives away.
I can't totally make it out either. There's a guy in a white shirt who comes from the back and hops in the right side of the ambulance before it drives away. There's a bunch of movement at the back of the ambulance as well.
It certainly does look suspect...

Which is why I'm keeping my big mouth shut. It ain't all about me (wish it was sometimes, but it isn't. It is what it is.). I can be tolerant of those thought that they would never see this day and worked HONESTLY to get here.
I will show President Obama the respect that a man in that office deserves until that time that he loses that respect. I hope that he doesn't do anything to trigger that, since that would be bad for the country and that is more important to me than he is. I will definitely show Obama more respect than those BDS-sufferers (although I think that they may have enjoyed it!) showed President Bush. We have all had a perfect example from the left on how NOT to behave if we want to be taken seriously. Acting like a 2-year-old with diaper rash that just had a toy taken away for bad behavior is not condusive to getting ones' way.

From President Obama's speech:
This is the journey we continue today. We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on earth. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year. Our capacity remains undiminished. But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions - that time has surely passed. Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.
From Pick Yourself Up,
by Jerome Kern & Dorothy Fields
Don't lose your confidence if you slip,
Be grateful for a pleasant trip,
And pick yourself up,
Dust yourself off,
Start all over again.Nothing's impossible I have found,
For when my chin is on the ground,
I pick myself up,
Dust myself off,
Start all over again.

The minister's remarks are a paraphrase of an old joke in the black community referring to white racism:
"If you're black, get back.
If you're brown, stick around.
If you're white, you're all right."His paraphrase is a thumb in the eye of white people, yet whites don't understand it. Interesting that reverse racism rears its ugly head so early, and so publicly and officially, during Obama's inauguration.
I understood it, and immediately thought: post-racial, my a$$.
But I've been thinking that since early days of the campaign.

being a Fed, i have a new boss. "Meet the new boss, same (not) as the old boss." Americal got fooled again.
I keep thinking of this song by The Who (from their magnum opus QUADROPHENIA):
Punk Meets The Godfather
Punk:
You declared you would be three inches taller
You only became what we made you.
Thought you were chasing a destiny calling
You only earned what we gave you.
You fell and cried as our people were starving,
Now you know that we blame you.
You tried to walk on the trail we were carving,
Now you know that we framed you.
G.f.:
I'm the guy in the sky
Flying high flashing eyes
No surprise I told lies
I'm the punk in the gutter
I'm the new president
But I grew and I bent
Don't you know? don't it show?
I'm the punk with the stutter.
My my my my my mmmm my my my.
Ggggg-g-g-g-g generation.
Punk:
We tried to speak between lines of oration
You could only repeat what we told you.
Your axe belongs to a dying nation,
They dont know that we own you.
Youre watching movies trying to find the feelers,
You only see what we show you.
We're the slaves of the phony leaders
Breathe the air we have blown you.
G.f.:
Im the guy etc.
I have to be careful not to preach
I cant pretend that I can teach,
And yet I've lived your future out
By pounding stages like a clown.
And on the dance floor broken glass,
The bloody faces slowly pass,
The broken seats in empty rows,
It all belongs to me, you know.
607 | Optimizer Tue, Jan 20, 2009 11:14:01am |
I found the speech to be self-contradictory, and generally pretty poor. Towards the beginning he extols our "founding documents", but later he gives a veiled endorsement of socialism.
Of course, there was the obligatory (for him) narcissist "moment" crap, which didn't seem to fly well, IMHO. Has everybody (besides lizards) finally noticed how hollow that crap is?
The civil rights reference struck me as anachronistic. If that stuff wasn't old news, you wouldn't be standing there, pal. Gimme a break.
But notice the recurring theme for his administration (as was previously presented in Philadelphia). To paraphrase: "I am one of those great Presidents who pulled the country through a great crisis - and, BTW, that'll take eight years." (The "crisis" being claimed is three-fold: financial, the wars, and global warming.) His unbridled narcissism never disappoints.
So the Iraq War (which is all but won) and the war in Afghanistan (which probably doesn't even qualify as a "major" war) represent a "crisis", and the recent financial meltdown ranks with the Revolution, the Civil War, and WWII. [BTW, Al Qaida was out-of-controll when Bush took office, but a mere shadow of its former self when he left, pal - no thanks to guys like you!]
As to global warming, this is where he's "saving the whole world", not just the US. I guess he's betting on everybody continuing in their denial about how the Earth hasn't been warming for about a decade, and is starting to cool - despite ever-increasing CO2 levels.
Oh, and there were a number of places where I had to ask, "WTF is he even talking about?" Which kind of implies that it's moonbat code so far removed from reality that I haven't even caught wind of it yet.
On the whole - as Rush put it - "nobody knew when to clap". There were no "big moments" to get excited about.

iirc, Ben Frankin wanted the Turkey to be our Nation Bird. He despised the Bald Eagle and considered it to be nothing more than a scavenger.
"For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him.

Who cares if he's black? Liberals are scumbags and with the new pres. its just business as usual for the oligarchy. All the rhetoric of Hope, hopie , Change, change, and the same old hacks are appointed etc. Maybe Sandy Berger will be appointed to something so he can steal more documents. I am proud not to be one of the 69 million freaking idiots who voted for this fraud. Now I'll just sit back and watch the insanity progress while our freedoms slip away - I'm sure my next post will be from a re-education camp. Where do I get my free gas and mediocre health care? Do I get a voucher? I was told its all right as long as I have a voucher.

re: #610 Bubblehead II
iirc, Ben Frankin wanted the Turkey to be our Nation Bird. He despised the Bald Eagle and considered it to be nothing more than a scavenger.

I remember that from a Wild Turkey Liquor advertisement.
