Video: Carter Snubs Clinton at Inauguration

Video • Views: 4,217

In the new land of hope, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton still aren’t getting along. As they stood in the foyer preparing to go out on stage, Carter totally snubbed Clinton. Watch the look that passes between Hillary and Bill after Jimmy gives the Clenis the Big Ig.

FLV Video

UPDATE at 1/20/09 1:44:24 pm:

More at ABC News: Political Radar: Carter ‘Snubs’ Clinton?

President Carter disputes there was any snub and says any suggestion there was is “erroneous.” Through a spokesperson at the Carter Center in Atlanta, the former President told ABC News that he had earlier spent a half hour talking to the Clintons and therefore wanted to use the opportunity to say hello to the Bushes while he could. According to the spokesperson, cameras only caught the later encounter.

Relations between the Carters and the Clintons have reportedly been frosty for years, dating back to 1980, when Carter’s landslide defeat to Ronald Reagan may have cost Clinton the Arkansas governor’s mansion. At least that’s what Clinton reportedly believed.

In the 90s Clinton was said to resent some of Carter’s freelance diplomacy. Carter, for his part, spared no criticism of Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

If I were Clinton, I'd wear that as a badge of honor.

It's worrisome when the Clintons show more class than another, older couple!

I doubt I'd be able to ignore Carter. Not that I'd engage in any sort of violence, but I don't think I could resist calling him an anti-Semitic asshole who screwed up the country and the world so bad we're still dealing with the problems he created 30 years later.

Clinton is probably pissed because he had to deal with Carter's mess.

16 lawhawk  Tue, Jan 20, 2009 1:04:07pm

Actually, it looks like Jimmy snubs both Bill and Hillary. Nice. Classy.

These guys are members of the most unique and elite club in the world - ex-Presidents, but that doesn't mean that they have to like each other. In fact, looks like Carter can't stand the Clintons at all, which stands in clear contrast to the way that Bush Sr and Clinton pal around.

The nice guy pacifist thing is and act. The guy is a bundle of hate.

Another funny moment. Bush senior is having a hard time walking which has been the case since 2007. As he is walking slowly and Barbara is bounding down the steps someone says (obviously to him) "I can give you a hand if you need help"

"No, I'm just fine and keeps tearing a bee line to the seats."

I noticed how bush senior tapped the arm of all the security people and guards. Some ass MSM reported said how bitter he must be watching his son leave with such low numbers but someone else, Gergen?, countered that GHWB is a classy guy and magnanimous.

I don't like or respect any of them but Jimmmy stands in a class by himself. Rather than show the grace and dignity of an elderly statesman, he can't stop from inflicting himself where he is not wanted - long after he had his shot to make a difference and blew it.
But that would imply that he had grace and dignity to begin with........

Well, the presidency doesn't really rest so much on talent, as it does on whether or not someone gets enough votes. Being a Superbowl QB, a top flight scientist, etc, have more meaning than being elected president, even though there have been a few great men in the office (Washington, Jefferson and Madison being favorites).

Having lived under the rule of the Kennedy's for my entire life I can honestly say that Ted is the dimmest bulb in the pack. I don't wish him bad health or worse, but the man deliberately and repeatedly decreased the quality of my life and the lives of my family and friends.
I wish that he had stopped running for political office after his aborted Presidential run and retired to the golf course and marinas that were his true calling. The fact that he's possibly in extremis brings me no joy, but I wish he'd taken more time during his life to simply enjoy his wealth, rather than scheming to deprive others of theirs.

With his refusal to back the Shah in 1979 combined with a terrible economy, Democratic President Jimmy Carter dumped a large load of crap on his successors, beginning with Ronald Reagan.

Carter is obsessed with his legacy. Now that his Habitat for Humanity houses are beginning to crumble due to shoddy construction, he has little to look forward to.

Yeah - and hopefully his evil brethren at Hamas will also crumble pdq!

Well, well, well. I don't know about youse guys, but I was outside a couple of hours ago, going about my business, when I suddenly felt a surge of hope and change engulf me. Positively enrapturing.

Indeed, as I stood transfixed I realized that not only did I feel hopey and changey, but positively superior to each and ever other piddling nation on the face of the earth, they lacking my moral compass, my superior-in-every-way President, my Obamanation.

By God, I actually pity those poor souls, all unObamaed as they are. How do they struggle by? It must be terribly disheartening to realize just how awesome America now is, and how unawesome, by comparison, they are.

I'll bet that the only thing more awesome than America's awesomeness is the huge humilty that we possess. I'll bet we have more humility and awesomeness than anyone lacking an Obama.

This is going to be fun.

It did not look to me like Clinton made eye contact or extended his hand to Carter, either. Obviously there is bad blood between the two, but - if decorum is the issue - it's not just Carter who was acting juvenile.

Carter is a nitwit. The 'Evil' adjuective needs to be used selectively for world leaders. Carter does not reach that...not even close.

I thought Clinton started to extend his hand - then, when he saw that Carter was going to brush by him, stopped.

About the eye contact, I was pretty sure I saw it.

And Carter is evil. I've read his books.

From, of all places, HillBuzz:

Goodbye and thank you, George W. Bush. You did the very best that you could, and we are grateful for your service.

We’ve been thinking of what to say about former President George W. Bush, now that he’s officially a former president. Our first impulse was to write about the Florida recount and the time we spent down in Tallahassee in 2000, screaming and yelling like crazy people, demanding justice and fairness and the unalienable right for all votes to count, but considering we had to go to Washington DC on May 31st last year (for the Rules and Bylaws Committee Meeting) to scream and yell for the Democratic party to count all votes in Florida and Michigan, any residual anger we had over Election 2000’s been squarely absolved.

Then, we thought we’d open this by complaining about how silly it was that Bush gave everyone from staff members to world leaders nicknames, and carried on like an old frat boy long expelled but still planning the next kegger, but then we remember the Obama fist-bumps and the “hip slang” (hey, do me a solid) the 44th president tries to work into almost everything he says, and suddenly calling Vladimir Putin “Pooty-poot” doesn’t seem so unusual.

And George W. Bush doesn’t seem so bad after all.

All things considered.

Read the whole thing.

But what would anyone expect from the piece of crap?

"But it is not until the final chapter that Carter provides a basic framework, returning largely to pre-1967 borders with some sort of sharing of Jerusalem, a measure of rights for Arab refugees to return to the occupied territories and an end to settlement expansion."

Were I in a political situation where protocol demanded it, I might well shake Pat Buchanan's hand, and I utterly despise the man. Politics often requires such sacrifices upon the altar of polite hypocrisy.

The substitution of "honesty" for manners in the 1960s wrought incalculable damage to our society--damage which is still going on. Manners permit one to express, and communicate, disapproval of someone, or their opinions, without having to resort to gross gestures.

All that was called for was good old fashioned manners and class. A handshake and greeting was all the situation called for, nobody was asking them to snog. And Hillary should have been greeted also, but it was up to her to offer her hand first. Carters conduct was uncalled for and brought to mind a spoiled brat.

Exactly what I thought when I heard this. He said "President TO the United States," not OF the United States. Could Roberts' own words betray his knowledge that Obama is an outsider?

I have a simpler explanation.

Obama was one of the few Senators to vote against Roberts' confirmation, and Roberts harbors a subconscious dislike for Obama.

re: #234 RoughRider

And now are we going to have a flock of brilliant conspiracy-theorist Oafers to deal with too?

I guess this is a good place to re-post the story that happened to me as I was going to work yesterday (all the references to "today" are referring to Jan. 19th, when I originally posted this):

Ever get in a bad situation, but you not only said or did something to get out of it, you said or did the one thing that gets you out of that situation in the best possible way? That happened to me today!

I was taking a long bus ride to work. As it happens, the bus was more crowded than usual, as there were many people on there who had obviously just come from the Las Vegas Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade (judging by their King Jr./0bama shirts).

When I got on, the only place left to sit was in back. There was some big black guy (most likely homeless, judging by appearances) sleeping just 2 seats over facing me (the buses here have seats facing both forward and backward), but he slept through half the strip, and I figured he wouldn't be any problem.

At the stop in front of Caesars Palace, the bus driver (obviously concerned about how long this guy has been sleeping) comes back to wake the guy up - not kick him off, but just to wake him up and make sure he's OK.

Well, this guy wakes up, and starts ranting about being woken up. He starts complaining about being woken up by the bus driver, yelling how the bus driver probably isn't even American (naturally, everyone else including me is not paying attention to him), and screams that the bus driver is probably Hawaiian (Ummm . . . remind me again what country Hawaii is in?)!

The bus driver walked away, and I figured I'd get away from this situation, too. Unfortunately, as I started to leave, this guy blocks me. As he is bigger than me, and possibly crazy, I'm pretty much stuck.

He starts yelling directly at me about how these "foreigners" are everywhere, and starts saying that damn Hawaiians, Mexicans and others are ruining this country. I'm scared as heck, and the other passengers are scared of this guy, and pity me, as everyone (including me) probably figures I'm going to get beat up.

All I could say at first was, "Isn't Hawaii part of this country?" The crazy guy goes off about how you can't just make stuff up and says it isn't.

It's at this point an idea came into my head, and I decide to go with it.

I ask him if he's sure, and he says he's damn sure Hawaii isn't part of America. I then yell at the top of my lungs, so everyone on the bus can hear me, "OH, SO YOU'RE SAYING HAWAII ISN'T IN THE US, AND THEREFORE NATIVE HAWAIIAN BARACK 0BAMA CAN'T LEGALLY BE SWORN IN AS THE NEW US PRESIDENT TOMORROW?!?"

When the consequences of what he's saying hit this guy, and when he turned around to see a bus full of people who are not only anticipating 0bama's inauguration, but who are wearing MLK Jr./0bama T-shirts, scowling at him, he ran from the bus fast enough to qualify for the Olympics!

Almost everyone on the bus especially those just a few rows from me, immediately broke out into laughter. An 0bama supporter just one row away turned to me and said, "Dude, that was F***ING brilliant!"

Obama is President of the US. I don't have to like him personally. I don't have to like his policies, but I damned well want him to keep us safe from another terror attack. I want the economy to improve, but not at the expense of everyone's grandkids (and great great grandkids). I will speak out against his excesses, and will acknowledge the good bits.

That's what the loyal opposition does. Just because I'm not frothing at the mouth in anger demanding Obama's head on a pike today doesn't mean I'm the reason that Obama won.

Anger will not change any of that.

In Plains, Georgia, the Carters owned everything of value and lived in the big white house on the hill, even if there was no hill. They were the top of what passed for a social and economic hierarchy in pre-WWII Plains.

Clinton, by contrast, comes from a family that Jimmy would consider "white trash" (to use a politically incorrect, but appropriate, phrase). Probably, in Jimmy's mind, Bill Clinton is still his social inferior, with everything that flows from that. Doesn't matter where Clinton went to college, or what honors he received. To Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton is still a lower class kid from Hot Springs, Arkansas.

It's no surprise that Amy Carter turned out the way she did, getting kicked out of Brown and all.

The offspring of the presidents are very telling.

Then we have poor Chelsea who went to work for the greatest of humanitarian causes - a Wall Street Hedge Fund.

And then there is Jenna Bush who became a teacher, and wrote a book about a girl with AIDS giving all the proceeds to charity.

Class does tell, and tell, and tell...

re: #219 Ben Hur

You can certainly tell who it is that Carter loves -- the ones he's more than willing to "worship" -- that's HAMAS murderers (the ones he'll gladly kowtow to, hug and kiss). But a Clinton? Well, of course not -- a Clinton is someone Carter must snub. Typical behavior for a moral idiot...and that is what Carter is -- a moral idiot.

It may be a mutual snub or it may be that the greetings had already occurred previously.

All that was called for was good old fashioned manners and class. A handshake and greeting was all the situation called for, nobody was asking them to snog. And Hillary should have been greeted also, but it was up to her to offer her hand first. Carters conduct was uncalled for and brought to mind a spoiled brat.

re: #258 lawhawk

I had someone posting on my site that because I consider myself the loyal opposition that I'm somehow evil and conspiring against the conservative movement (ignore for a moment I never got my conservative movement card and my neo-con paychecks). It's beyond silly.

Of course not.

That old chestnut goes you salute the uniform, not the man.

I don't like Obama, but I respect the system enough not to start with that immature "He's not *MY* President" garbage that the liberals dumped on Bush.

As indicated earlier, I'm certainly willing to give President "present" the benefit of the doubt before castigating him.

And this is particularly since he hasn't actually done anything yet!

He'll be tested soon enough. The North Korean sabers are already rattling, and I'd expect more of the same over the next few months.

New York-based designer Toledo said the coat and dress were made of Swiss wool lace, backed with netting for warmth on the bitterly cold Washington morning, and lined in French silk.

"I wanted to pick a very optimistic color, that had sunshine," Toledo told New York Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn on Tuesday. "I wanted her to feel charmed, and in that way would charm everybody."

Obama *could* kick Carter in the 'nads just by making a statement during Carter's next dictator-trip to the effect of "Former President Carter does not represent either my administration or the United States Gov't". . .but he won't do it.

Have you ever been to Plains, Georgia? When I was a kid and on our way back from a family vacation in Florida, my parents thought it would be cool to find Plains since Carter had just been elected. One horse town would be overstating things. I remember a dusty, has-been southern town with a grain elevator and that was pretty much it. we were thirsty and I have a vague recollection of finding an outdoor coke machine...in those days you could drive right by the Carter house, which was a block from "main street" as it were. It was a nondescript brick ranch, maybe 2000 square feet tops. I vaguely remember one secret service agent out front (the highlight of the tour) making sure no one slowed down to much. So I really can't imagine Carter feeling superior to Clinton on a social scale because there wasn't anything to Plains Georgia or to his house.

Take away Carter's passport?

Exactly.

Ain't going to happen.

Remember, Obama is the one who wanted unconditional face-to-face meetings with all of America's foes, including Iran.

Sound familiar?

Obama isn't going to restrict Carter's terrorist-suck-ups because Obama is going to want the same leeway himself as ex-president.

Obama isn't going to do ANYTHING to restrict Carter, at least in part because Carter represents the sort of deluded liberal "can't we all just get along" foreign policy that Obama articulated during his entire campaign.

I was talking to my nephew about the inauguration - specifically about the lack of class demonstrated by the people who booed President Bush when he arrived at the platform.

I told him that the primary aspect of cretinous behavior is that the cretin is not aware that his behavior is not socially acceptable and reflects poorly upon his honor.

Then Carter demonstrates even worse behavior in a more intimate situation. I'm glad we have the benefit of seeing it on camera so there is no doubt about the interpretation.

OT. I'm sorry to go off topic, but, this is the second propaganda infocommercial I've heard on the radio since the One was sworn in. It's from union representatives commemorating BHO and glorifying the "wonderful" benefits of unions. Does anyone know what that's about and is it happening anywhere else but northern Illinois. Is this the beginning of a soft campaign to unionize all businesses?

they wish.

You cannot seriously like that dress on her?!

It's a fine dress for a woman several inches shorter with a 32-24-32 body, but not for a woman with Michelle Obama's build.

When she's not frowning, she's quite good looking, and I admire height and strength. She needs to dress for that, not as if she was some slip of a thing.

And she really, really needs to stand up straight and settle those shoulders!

The notion that Carter's loss cost Clinton the governorship is ridiculous. Clinton lost that election because, among other things, he raised the car license fee. I know that doesn't sound like a hanging offense, but, at that time the process for getting a license plate in Arkansas made an IRS audit look like a little slice of heaven; hours of standing in line, being denied if you didn't have every i dotted or t crossed on the required paperwork. Nobody liked the system and Clinton's idea of raising the fee for all that joy...well, in a less civilized country he would had to leave in dead of night.
The only reason that he was reelected was that his successor was worse than he was.

493 formercorpsman  Tue, Jan 20, 2009 2:53:29pm

495 MJ  Tue, Jan 20, 2009 3:02:43pm

The reason the two don't like each other is that Carter lied about what happened during Clinton's term with negotiations between Israel and the Arafat. Clinton didn't much like it and finally called Carter a liar in so many words:

"...For months, the controversy over former president Jimmy Carter’s book has generally been fueled by bitter criticism from the Jewish community. In recent weeks, however, the debate has shown signs of evolving into a personal clash between the country’s last two Democratic presidents.

Earlier this month, former president Bill Clinton spoke out against Carter’s book, “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid,” during an appearance before the United Jewish Federation of San Diego County. “If I were an Israeli I wouldn’t like it, because it’s not factually correct and it’s not fair,” Clinton reportedly said.

Carter: Bill Clinton 'hurt his wife's candidacy'

DENVER %P% Taking a rare shot at another White House alumnus, former President Jimmy Carter tells The Washington Times that Bill Clinton became an unwittingly divisive figure during the Democratic primaries who hurt his wife's chances to win the presidency with a series of verbal gaffes....

Can't we all just get along!

The irony is these two guys attempted to bring peace to the middle east, yet they can't bring themselves to be civil to each other at a public ceremony.

But the difference is that Carter was out to screw the Jews ("You have to give up ALL the Sinai!") & Clinton wasn't. Surely I am not the only one who remembers Clinton's (actually, both of them!) definitive statements that it was Arafat/the PLO who are responsible for the problems over there (And all those unprecedented "leaks" from Clinton officials along the same lines...?)? THAT is what Carter really hates.

I am ashamed he was ever president of the US, & yes, I would go out of my way to make sure I never saw or got near him, because I could never shake his hand or be polite to him - & I like to think I'd feel the same way even if I weren;t Jewish.
