Here is a completely unbiased AP article about the trip to Texas.
The unpopular incumbent and Obama, who has ascended to rock-star status even as he faces daunting and international challenges, stood with their wives on the Capitol steps smiling and laughing. If there were any hard feelings between the incoming Democrat and outgoing Republican, they weren't apparent in the Bush send-off at the base of the helicopter. The two men hugged and clasped hands one final time, sealing the transfer of power.

ot/ My alma mater, Culver Military Academy/Girls Academy, were awesome in the inaugural parade (They were horseback "The Black Horse Troop"). It gave me chills to see them march in the parade (always does!).

My opinion of fox news is based solely on my observations of them- I could care less what the left thinks of them. They damage the right more than they help. They are a false "friend" because, as I said, at the end of the day they are still MSM.

Not so much. I just watched it in the mornings, before I switched over to the "Dog Whisperer" (great show) NatGeo channel.
I am pleased to say that I watched very little tv while on vacation. I fished, golfed, swam and snorkeled and even climbed a peak on Maui, but not much tv.
Best moment of the vacation, Thursday morning we and 4 other couples kayaked out to the channel between Maui and Lanai and got so far out that you could no longer hear the island noises any more (about a mile or more) and listened to the humpback whales singing. Had some nice breeches, sightings, and some fine tail slapping too.
Oh, and whoever recommended Kimo's was right on. The ultimate cheeseburger in paradise. I think it was Island Libertarian. Thanks for your kokua.

I'm watching a thing on History Channel about the US Presidents. They just mentioned that Abraham Lincoln, bitterly angry about a major pro-slavery law just passed, started a new political party specifically to fight slavery. It was, of course, the Republican party.

I've had some time to take a close look at what happened in the market today.
The market repudiated Obama and his big spending plans today.
In addition, it was a total wipe out of the financial sector.
Bank of America, Citigroup, State Street bank stock is toast. Their stock value is near zero.
The Market basically told Obama that they do not think he has any answers that will work. His far left stuff about nationalized healthcare and going after the prosperous fell flat.
Obama may have trouble getting votes for his big spending plans. The Republicans should serve notice right now that they will vote no and the Dem's will have to pass it all themselves.
It's going to be ugly for quite a while.

Good evening y'all. I've scanned some of the comments here and at the prior thread and while - if I had the time now - I would ordinarily, ah, disagree with some of the sentiments expressed, I can and will say that history will treat George W. Bush and his wife
far, far better than it will most of those who were so unbelievably visicous towards him while he was POTUS.
I know that he helped give freedom to some 50 million people in the Middle East; that although it wasn't as much as many of us out here would have liked, he DID try to help - and indeed did help Israel, and I was truly grateful for his being our President from the purely narrow and selfish view that he kept me and mine safe after 9/11/01.

The Emancipation Proclamation dealt only with the Confederacy.
It did NOT outlaw slavery in the northern states.
Not until after the war was slavery outlawed in the Union.

God bless George Bush..... he screwed up sometimes, as all men will, but dammit, he saw what had to be done after the evildoers attacked us on Sept 11, and he said not anymore while I'm in charge. And he kept his word, and let himself be unpopular and maligned for doing what had to be done.
Probably not so easy for a guy who has a ton of friends and likes to get along with others.
Obama seems to be more of a loner, so it should be easier for him to make the unpopular but necessary security choices for the US. Why am I not assured in my gut that he will.......?
Sure hope he grows into this job in a hurry, and I wish him well. He did look pretty presidential in the parade, I have to admit.

They claim that all the racist old Dixiecrats fled for the GOP shortly after the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Never mind that a higher percentage of Republicans than Democrats voted for it in the House and Senate (Republicans at the time being a minority, of course).
I am not a historian, but it seems to me that the Democrats moved so far left that Southern voters vastly preferred Nixon. Southerners have always been more conservative, regardless of party identification. Elected officials in the South remained Democrats and their constituents kept voting them in, as long as they were seen as distinct from the national Democratic Party.
Republicans did not make great strides in capturing state legislatures or Southern governors' mansions until the 1980s (the dreaded Reagan years). That was a generation later and you can hardly hold today's Southern Republicans responsible for the actions of Democrats 40 years ago, but they sure try.

I can assure you that my ancestors never owned slaves. In fact, they lived their lives more like slaves than as free men, and that was as white men in 19th Century Boston.

I know I'm sounding very pessimistic, but I think the financials are all going to near zero, unemployment will jump, the lefties like Pelosi are making dangerous comments about raising capital gains and such, and we got a Treasury nominee in Geithner who can't remember to pay his taxes.
Obama has to make a clear statement of what they are going to do about this within 48 hours or it's look out below.
The market needs to know what the rules are going to be.

There were a lot of people all through the USA who supported and/or benefited from slave ownership. There were a lot of people all through the USA who were also appalled by slave ownership. It was a largely moral issue. I suspect for it's day it was a morally defining issue, sort of like abortion is today. It is entirely possible people will be looking back on today's world with the same sort of simplistic, 20/20 hindsight about our present society's support of abortion that we now look back at the Nineteenth Century's support of slavery.

One of the best things tricks I ever did to someone was on board the Uss Mt. Whitney, we had a new a/c on his first cruise and used the naval tactical data scopes (which were almost like a video game) but one of the first things yu did when sitting down was to hit a button called "enter mode and radar" which tripped a buzzer. You then had to hit another button to silence the alarm. Big C ( who was in deed a big boy) sat down to the scope and hit the EMAR button, as soon as the buzzer sounded I did my best panicked voice and told him "QUICK FASTEN YOUR SAFETY BELT, FASTEN YOUR SAFETY BELT!" This guy was trying to get his seat blet ( to hold you in the seat during rough weather) strtetched out to his wide load, all the while the other guys who caught what i was doing were shouting at him "HURRY YOU DON"T HAVE MUCH TIME" I was about to piss myself to keep from laughing....

If prescript version 3.x.x runs your Logistics provider on the web and controls label printing.. yet a newer version blows everything up? Bullcrap..I had to uninstall a 147 machines of the wrong version and push out the 5.x.x version that Oracle R12 will run on..and only run that version..no matter how many multiple apps you run from that workstation..
And you know what Charles? If FireFox wanted to get rich and sassy they should design snap-ins for Oracle..Everyone I know likes Firefox but it isn't work compatible..That really sucks..

But, there are some truly breathtaking prices there, for gas and grocs. I think I paid five bucks for a half gallon of milk at a Safeway, among other things. Fantastic place, the whales were out with their calves and the escort males, weather got a little rough at one point, but we didn't mind.

Please don't think I view it as "simplistic". This is something that has fascinated me since high school, from the perspective of "how can one human be able to do this to another human". It was, and is, mind boggling. I always wondered if the "different species" argument (or variations of it) invoked was more to justify horrible actions to themselves rather than honestly held beliefs.

In any event, some people seem to think they're making a profound point when they mention how the North benefited indirectly from the slavery of the South, and imply that it was purely a symbolic move when Abe outlawed slavery only in the South. The truth is, the main center of slavery usage WAS in the South, so it made sense to outlaw it mainly there, since it doing so it effectively ended it EVERYwhere in the USA: After all, if it is stopped in the South, where slavery was absolutely an integral part of the economy, what usefulness then does slavery have in places where it's NOT all that commonly used and is NOT an integral part of the local economy?
I'm sorry, but I don't think they're making a profound point with that distinction. It is, so far as I'm concerned, a red herring. It is a difference that makes NO difference, since the point behind Abe's actions (to outlaw slavery in the South) ultimately WAS designed to HAVE the end result of ending slavery in the whole of the USA. It just did so by abolishing it where it was most strongly concentrated.

Yup Uber I do. This is a good place to blow off steam. I work in Medway Mass. and this area is prime messiah territory and they slam Bush here mercilessly. I have to bite my tongue as I am a contract worker right now and if I piss too many off I could be history. In the current economy I cannot afford to do that. When one a-hole in particular (a pretty decent guy otherwise) starts to go on about the "criminal Bush" I just leave. Better to keep my blood pressure lower and so forth.

Don't know why I'm posting this, other than I've noticed that some have posted personal "situations" and, I guess, it's a chance, after a couple of glasses of wine, to wallow in self-pity anonymously. A few months ago, I posted how proud I was of my youngest son who had graduated from college in 3 years while going through horrendous treatment for leukemia. I probably jinxed him.
On Christmas Eve, our worst fears were confirmed, the cancer had returned. He entered the Cleveland Clinic on Jan. 4th. After 4 days of full body radiation, he had 36 straight hours of chemo. Luckily, his bother was a match [a 1 in 4 chance, as I understand, but an excellent match] and he had a bone marrow transplant last Wednesday.
He is currently on a morphine drip [the Dr. said that years ago, the treatment was so bad they used to induce a coma like situation]. His immune system is completely destroyed - my wife, a nurse, says that a low-normal white count is around 4,000 - his is 10 - my wife also says that his white counts are so low that the lab techs are probably just making up the "10"]. I haven't gone to the hospital to see him in a few days because I have a cold, and he and his mother are scared to death of any infection. So, I'm sitting home with the dog - my wife is at the hospital 24-7 - with about 10" of global warming on the ground.
Again, I have no idea why I'm posting this. I guess to have someone say: "oh, it's alright, everything will be fine", when I know that's BS. Humans are strange, No?

Oh well I don't work there anymore. The company I am at now has 11i but, their internut connection is not the fastest and latency is a real drag. Lincoln never felt blacks were equivalent to whites in every respect - but he did say blacks were entitled to the same basic rights under the constitution. He just wasn't sure he had the constitutional authority to do anything about it for political reasons - only militarily (states rights vs. federal - the crux of the civil war).
Slavery, and how it really ended, is a remarkable story and it's a shame the real truth can't come out - its much more exciting then the Lincoln myth. The fact that slaves freed themselves, and the measures they took for this to happen under the Emancipation Proclamation is a true testament to the grit and determination of the human spirit.

Good point. I've been quite annoyed throughout this interminable election period that candidates rarely take the time--using simple sound bites--to explain what the various branches of government and the various federal, state, and local governments are supposed to do.
For example, the whole Katrina mess is blamed on Bush--unfairly so. Yesterday, at my local Starbucks some people were complaining about a big pothole in the street and thought that Obama would now take care of this "infrastructure" problem.
There is a lot of ignorance out there, and I blame the schools. I thought it was funny (in a sad sort of way) that Obama talked about improving the schools in his speech. That is NOT HIS JOB.
The funny thing is that he wants to make them as good as the school I went to in the olden days, before the feds ever got involved in local education. In those ancient days, teachers had to teach the "basics," and as bored as I was, I did manage to learn to read, spell, do arithmetic, and learn about the U.S. Constitution and the three branches of government.

When we were getting ready for the original change we researched and found that companies had gone bankrupt when they changed to Oracle and it scared the pantaloons off of a lot of us. Oracle views things like - you change your business to fit Oracle - ah no - we changed Oracle to fit the way WE do busines. This is Oracle's big bugaboo - they do things their way and if you don't like it you will be out a lot of samoleans to fix it.

Very good point. And it is also a pity that the equalization of blacks with whites in the South after that was stopped in it's tracks for more than a century. It took until the 1960s to finally give blacks equal rights and the dignity they deserved.
Unfortunately, that too seems to have been frozen in place by the Left's desire to make sure the blacks as a whole remain (in their minds) dependent upon the Donks for their wellbeing... so that they'll continue to vote, as a block, for the Donks.

Oh my old company has half the Indian subcontinent on the IT payroll (or did before the obasm scare hit) and they have kept the dang thing running ok but, still clunky. I like 11i better but, only if they have the infrastructure to back it up. You have to have some kickass computers and the hamsters were pretty tired on a lot of the 8i pc's. My wife is still there and just got rid of an old Dell optiplex with no sound and it was one of the first to run nt. It was barely able to run Oracle let alone anything else. My wife went down to IT and told them her PC sounded like an angry beaver - could you please come and make it better? THey laughed their butts off and looked at it and said they just throw them away. She is happy with a new(er) machine.
Well folks, gotta get up and make money for the messiah to tax away. Keep your stick on the ice!

It's easy and lazy to bash Bush right now. That's most certainly why the media can do little else during their infrequent breaks from the equally lazy work of lavishing praise on Obama. Bush's legacy will be written over the next few decades as the tough work of his policies continues to play out. Not all of it will be good, but much of it will. I don't care what anyone says about Bush; the man has class. He's demonstrated that throughout this transition, but also throughout his presidency. His magnanimous demeanor in the face of bitter rivals has not gone unnoticed by me.

As this is well and truly and dead thread, I will tell you of my doubts re: prayers, which is heresy for me, as I was raised a very fundamentalist protestant. IIRC the start of the greatest prayer, the "Our Father" as my Catholic, now Baptist [that's another story], second wife would call it, starts out: "Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done ...." Seems to me that many, including those doofuses selling prayer cloths on TV, forget that we are to pray that we accept God's will. That's a mighty tough prayer to pray.

Slivovitz, also known as Raki "rocky", is plum brandy. In the States it is usually 40%. In parts of Europe, it may be 80% or higher.

I'm late to the party, but FOX showed most of the speech Bush gave. It was fairly long and that surprised me. My 19 year old daughter thought it was an excellent speech as I did. He looked relaxed, he was humorous, coherent, his speech wasn't stilted as it sometimes seemed in Washington.
He said he was going to write a book because he wanted people to know what it was like to sit in his chair and make the decisions he had to make. He is not a broken man, but he is someone conscious of what he is up against as far as getting his story out as opposed to having it written by people who hate and look down upon him.

We just moved out of Texas to Indiana and baby it's cold! I'm beginning to regret the move. Texas winters spoiled me. The one and only thing I didn't like about Texas (besides 3 months of intense heat which you get use to) was the lack of trees. After living there for about 9 months we drove to Memphis and the lush greenness hit me and it was than I realized I'm a tree hugger! In a good way that is.

I agree. Indiana is pretty if you like farms with large barns, gentle streams; plowed fields in the fall or big fields of corn in the summer. Nothing terribly flashy, but picturesque.... I don't like any of it snow covered though. It's 4 degrees here right now. Kind of balmy after the minus 19 of last week.

Hard to tell. He has specifically denied any Presidential aspirations.
He has generated considerable opposition among Republicans. He was reelected in 2006, but one of his opponents was a Republican rebel running as an independent. She got about half as many votes as Perry did. This kind of 3rd-party politics could have easily handed the election to the Democrats, except that they did the same thing - there was a 4th-party Democrat rebel running as well. Perry won with about 39% of the vote in a 4-way race.
