Joe Biden is king of the Big Wind, and he promises to keep it to himself while the Obiden administration is in power.

Staff, more likely. And anything that proves problematic goes down the memory hole.

Expect legislation that will require sites that quote things that are no longer operational to remove all threads related to them.

Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax--
Of cabbages--and kings--
And why the sea is boiling hot--
And whether pigs have wings."

President Obama swiftly responded to Hurricane Katrina. Citing the Bush Administration's "unconscionable ineptitude" in responding to Hurricane Katrina, then-Senator Obama introduced legislation requiring disaster planners to take into account the specific needs of low-income hurricane victims.

"Swiftly responded"?

New Bible Book Found!

An international team of Biblical Scholars have just released part of what would appear to be a hitherto unknown book of the New Testament. The papyrus fragments written in a mixture of Koine Greek and Aramaic were discovered by an Egyptian farmer nearly three weeks ago in a crater produced by a Qassam rocket which veered off course and landed in his field near Nag Hamadi. Upon investigating the crater he found a shattered pottery vessel containing part of a scroll which was subsequently deciphered and translated by a team of experts from Egypt, Britain, the USA, France and Germany. The find is being hailed as the greatest in Biblical philology for decades and research into it is expected to last for four or maybe eight years.

Here follows the initial translation of the third chapter of the Book of Barack…

Difficult had been the progress of the Chosen One. And many had been his struggles against the evil tyrant of the Dubyaites and their allies amongst the Neo-Canaanites and the McCanaanites, and against the armies of the wicked Queen Hilary, widow of the despot of the Clintonites who had himself fallen from grace for committing the sin of Onan upon the raiment of Monica of the Slutanites.

Yet lo! It came to pass that upon twentieth day of the first month the Chosen One didst enter into the City of the Laundering in the District of Criminals to the sound of trumpets and the clash of cymbals. He was upon an Iron Horse in such manner as had been the great King Abraham seven score and eight years before. His arrival had been prophesised by both Jesse of the tribe of the Jackassites and Edward the Baptist (who had dwelt for a time of great brevity by the banks of the Chappaquiddick before he didst buggereth-off with much haste). And thus was the welcome of the Chosen One the welcome of The True Messiah.

And much was the rejoicing in the District of Criminals for it was deemed by the Goreacle of the Cult of the People of Green and indeed by the multitude that He was indeed the Chosen One and The Messiah and much was the rejoicing and cries of “Yes We Can!” and many shirts of Tee were sold to the jubilant throng. The calls of Hallelujah were taken up even by the lowliest. Even unto the man who had the concession upon the Mall of the Nation to make the feast of the curs of hotness and unleavened bread (mustard and onions extra) for even he did raise his voice unto the Heavens and proclaim, “For he is indeed The Messiah for verily this is putting my kids through college”.

Yeah, there's more at the link.

I was offended by the 80 year old reverend today. Saying "white needs to do right" is making the assumption that all whites think alike and act in unison, and don't do right. It was blatently racist. What was up with "yellow needs to mellow?" is that a crack at racial tensions in urban areas with Asian business people vs. African American citizens? How in the world does this man think the President was elected if not for white votes as well as black? Racism alive and well. Sigh....

And how about this little gem..

Expanding Paid Sick Days: Today, three-out-of-four low-wage workers have no paid sick leave. It is fundamentally unfair that a single mom playing by the rules can get fired or lose wages because her child gets sick. President Obama and Vice President Biden support efforts to guarantee workers seven days of paid sick leave per year, a moderate proposal that should not impose too onerous a burden on employers.

Andrew Breitbart is having some fun:

Many of the celebrities that were central to demonizing and making life impossible for President Bush for eight loathsome years NOW want to help with the heavy lifting of bringing America back together under President Barack Obama.

Witness Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher’s cavalcade of shiny, happy situational patriots appearing in a derivative public servitude announcement: A “Presidential Pledge” to President Barack Obama.

Forgive and forget? Right.

President Bush was not holding back Moore from “free[ing] one million people from slavery in the next five years.” Nor was he holding back the Obama-biquitous Will.I.Am from “chang[ing] how [he] live[s].” Ditto: Aaron Ekhart (”To be a better person,”) Marisa Tomei (”To integrate into my heart what I already know in my head which is that we are all in this together,”) Kutcher (”To the abolition to 21st century slavery,”) Anthony Kiedis (”To be of service to Barack Obama,”) P. Diddy (” pledge to turn the lights off, cause I used to leave the lights on but we want to conserve energy so I’ma turn the lights off, you turn the lights off,) and all-in-unison (”Because together we can, together we are, and together we will be the change that we seek.”)

He gets nastier and more specific further on:

[H]ating the president doesn’t mean one can’t still help out the country in a great time of need. But many went to foreign countries and demeaned it instead. Called those that disagreed with them rubes and hicks. The elitism of the celebrities against flyover country America could not have been more pronounced. They made a boat-load of movies that affirmed this narrow and patronizing world view.

And now they want us back.

We’re all Americans — NOW.

It’s a convenient lie the celebrity left peddles that they were with us during the initial Afghanistan phase of the war, and even after 9/11.

No syrupy revisionism will change this fact.

Go read the whole thing. It's a keeper.

Yes, it does. Mississippi will get the reward the Dems give the self-reliant: Their money will be taken and given to the lazy. Here's Tom Petty to help me explain:

Actually, references to that book are highly overdone, including my own reference above.

I consider myself a "scholar" on that book, since I have written only one of 4 official adaptations of the book to stage, so I spent a hell of a lot of time researching Eric Blair (George Orwell) when I was writing the script.

When have not seen anything in this country that comes close to the level of the horrors that take place in the book.

At Powerline, there's a fine bit of description that perfectly expresses my uneasiness with the O speeches up until now:
(Under 'The Speech' heading, at the link..)

"The speech was classic Obama -- the kind of fine-sounding, frivolous fare in which the idea that we face specific trade-offs is dismissed as cynicism, even as we're told in the most general way of the need for sacrifice and to make tough choices. The debates in which serious people on both sides of the political spectrum have engaged for decades were dismissed as "childish," as if there exists some magic synthesis that everyone up until now has missed. Today, the contours of this grand synthesis went once again unstated."

Definitely a cheap shot. The Louisiana National Guard performed promptly and brilliantly, saving an estimated 30,000 lives in New Orleans. The "crime wave" reported for the stadium turned out to be a fiction.

Only one identifiable, serious error by FEMA: The Wall Street Journal reported that the general in charge of ordering in relief supplies didn't understand that the breaches that flooded many neighborhoods in the city occurred AFTER the storm had passed, and reacted very late. He misread the situation. There were serious delays in some of the follow-up as a consequence.

The entire Gulf Coast took a serious hit, but the media focused only on majority-black New Orleans to enable race-baiting of the Bush Administration-- the extremely unfair insinuation that New Orleans was being short-changed because of racial factors.

These sorts of unjust attacks on Bush suggest bad faith on the part of elements in the new administration, and perhaps bad faith on the part of Obama himself.

Not an ideal situation, but the exact course catastrophes may take are difficult to anticipate in advance. When Obama's team botches the next disaster relief effort, we can blame it on his Administration's incompetence.

I don't really much care one way or the other about Obama as an individual. If he takes actions that turn out well for the country, then God bless him. If he takes actions that turn out poorly for the country, then it just makes it all the more urgent to rebuild a Conservative movement that can undo the damage. I have a sneaking suspicion that between Obama and the Democratic Congress, there will be a lot of damage to undo -- I would be ecstatic to be proven wrong.

WASHINGTON - President-elect Barack Obama and Senate Finance Committee chairman Max Baucus said Timothy Geithner should be confirmed as Treasury secretary as Republicans moved to delay his hearing and weigh questions about his taxes.

Obama said yesterday his "expectation" is that Geithner will be approved by the Senate. Obama said while the errors in Geithner's taxes were an "embarrassment" for the nominee, "it was an innocent mistake."

Well, i found out this evening there is a left and a LEFT. I just got back from a bar celebration of the Obama swearing in. Most all of them were middle or left of the middle, but not all of them. One couple e'were pacifists going from table to table trying to get signature on a petition to indite Bush for "war crimes" The good news is I did not see anyone signing, many were very animated in opposition.

Not a chance. She's displaying black church lady taste, writ large with unlimited resources. It is an expression of her cultural heritage.

Again, my hope is that it will pass...or at least be subdued. Yes, I agree that there is a cultural factor, and we have to accept this. But I think when it comes to State dinners and the like, she will decide not to stick out like a sore thumb so much.

Yeah, it is. McCain was the worst one of them. It was hard to vote for him, but I have no illusions about Obama being a wise (or, for that matter competant) leader.

My bet is McCain gives the Democrats the 60th vote they need to invoke cloture on any important issue.

Yes, it does. The M134D fires at 4,000 rounds per minute. It's standard ammo bin carries 6,000 rounds. It is also used on Helicopters and Guntrucks. It is very good at shredding terrorists.

this kind of behavior is typical for people who have no real confidence or sense of themselves.
the O has tried so hard to be abraham lincoln, during a time when he should have been reassuring the country of his own personal strengths and qualifications to serve as potus.
he lashes out needlessly at pres. bush when he could easily show dignity and class.
i found it disgusting during the campaign when he made fun of a decent citizen, "joe the plumber". this kind of behavior from a candidate running for potus was so unbecoming.
O is out of touch w/ proper behavior in social settings. he really is in above his pay grade. he is behaving like a crass jackass.
i have a sinking feeling, like maybe the king of spain will have to silence him w/ a glance a few harsh words.
the obamas do not belong in the whitehouse.

We were a bunch of uneducated rubes who just didn't matter. If we chose to go into the military to serve our country, we had no other option in life or had so little opportunity afforded us that we must have been forced into it. I remember watching Katrina. I was just out of school and unemployed so I could watch all day long and into the night. I remember people begging the Governor of Louisiana and the Mayor of New Orleans to declare a disaster and ask the federal government and national guard for aid. Nothing happened. Again and again in those first hours, then days, people begged someone to ask for that assistance that by law can only be granted when asked by the proper officials through proper channels. Nothing happened until the situation was a hopeless disaster.

re: #170 Miss Molly

How come Mississippi pulled itself together right after the hurricane and has been able to recover nicely and New Orleans is still doing nothing. Does this mean there will be a blank check in the mail for New Orleans?

I have an retired trucker uncle who drives loads for disaster relief. He related to me that when he got down in the area of Mississippi hit by Katrina they were already busy cleaning up and getting things back to normal, but as soon as he crossed the state line into Louisiana, it was like being in another country. Literally no one was doing anything.
Also heard a story here on LGF from a person who went to NO for charity work and observed some of NO's finest citizens sitting in the shade drinking beer while people from somewhere else built them a new place to live.

re: #454 David IV of Georgia

I remember watching Katrina. I was just out of school and unemployed so I could watch all day long and into the night. I remember people begging the Governor of Louisiana and the Mayor of New Orleans to declare a disaster and ask the federal government and national guard for aid. Nothing happened. Again and again in those first hours, then days, people begged someone to ask for that assistance that by law can only be granted when asked by the proper officials through proper channels. Nothing happened until the situation was a hopeless disaster.

This is one of those things that just floors me: There are people who actually, actively blame W for all this. They literally believe he was totally to blame for ALL that went wrong in New Orleans specifically because he stood aside and did NOTHING until the situation in New Orleans was a total disaster. And when you try to tell them that he was barred by law from coming in to help until he was explicitly asked to by the local government there, they say you're a deluded fool who's only making excuses for W's incompetence!

Were this a religion, I'd say that that was tantamount to blasphemy!

The biggest problem with liberals in Congress is that whenever their social programs prove counterproductive and make things worse instead of better, the explanation is that the program didn't go far enough. The medicine isn't working so up the dosage!

I expect to see this quite often the next few years: "We're still struggling to overcome the misguided Bush legacy. If our plans don't work, it's Bush's fault."

You know he did not say that. His comment was very much like Mccains. He wants more troops on the ground since air strikes were causing unneeded civilian casualties.

"We've got to get the job done there [in Afghanistan] and that requires us to have enough troops so that we're not just air-raiding villages and killing civilians, which is causing enormous pressure over there."

' U.S. airstrikes in Afghanistan -- and accounts of resulting civilian casualties -- have been widely reported in the media and have provoked criticism from Afghan President Hamid Karzai and a British commander stationed there.

I am all but certain that Obama had nothing to do with putting this up on the website, and that it was just some staff member. Would he really have the time, with todays Inauguration and all?

Still, it reflects quite poorly on his leadership capabilities, and I have no doubt that we will see many such examples of "staff gaffes" in the coming days.

It's ok, though. Where as President Bush was held accountable for the mistakes of state governors and city mayors many miles away, President Obama will be seen as unaccountable for the mistakes made by staff within (or very near to) his office.

Yay for double standards!

How he responds to this will tell how he's going to run his administration. I'm sure you're right, he had nothing directly to do with the wording. He can either

1) Leave it the way it is.
2) Quietly change it and hope people forget about it.
3) Take responsibility, change it, and say he has taken measures to be sure it doesn't happen again.
4) Blame the staffer and say he had no control.

I was in the Big E last weekend. It seems to be doing very well. There were lots of touristy types and people everywhere at all hours of the day and night, including the cops with their damn siren below my hotel window for about 30 minutes at 3 AM Saturday morning!

Frankly, the town was a whole lot cleaner than I remembered it being. I only saw one passed out drunk, and the puddles of vomit and urine were missing entirely. We did have to detour to avoid an itinerant banjo player who was lurking in a doorway, but other than that it was clear sailing.

Went to Paddy O'Briens and Felix's. Had some beer and an oyster poboy. Jackson Square is still there. The Jackson brewery is still closed. Checked in at Cafe du Monde and did the beignets (too hot to touch) and coffee (strong). Good stuff!

One thing, there's a bunch of guys who have spray painted themselves gold and silver and like to pretend that they're statues. I have no idea why people pay them to do this, but it's creepy.

I'm pretty sure Bush's "broken promises" about rebuilding New Orleans and the Gulf Coast have been met long ago. As for ensuring that the federal government will never again allow the government of New Orleans to mismanage (if not launder and steal) billions of dollars of levee funding over a period of two decades and make a pig's breakfast of the subsequent emergency evacuations made necessary by that mismanagement, I don't know how that could be done outside of barring the Democrat Party from participating in Louisiana politics...

ROFL! These guys have no idea what they're talking about. Here in Houston we just went through Ike. FEMA couldn't find their ass with both of their hands. They were still trying to find a place to park trailers of melting ice while a local radio station was handing out ice and fresh water to all comers. And the problem wasn't Bush and his cronies...it was the federal government. They had so many regulations and hoops to jump through that they were simply incapable of quick, efficient response. The response failure belongs to the good Governor and mayor during that disaster. The President can not cross state lines until granted permission which was not granted until the disaster had happened.

The clean-up and recovery is the failure of the Louisiana government to not have funds available to rebuild New Orleans after NO levies broke as anticipated by many studies prior.

A few days after the resulting brouhaha, it was changed to "Work the hours and your parents will get a tax break, it's not required." Shame that whoever changed it forgot to check *every* page on the site, as several articles on other pages still quoted the "Required Service for Graduation" line.

498 goban  Wed, Jan 21, 2009 5:45:31am

This might turn out to be a fun 4 years. The Baby got his bottle and the dog caught the car. Now what? Who are you going to blame? Oopsie! You got what you wanted. Now you are going to get it good and hard and when you start to fail recommend we all just sit back and let it happen. Don't interfere at all. Give them what they want and then people will see with clarity that it just won't work. The more we worked to delay and prevent their philosophy from coming to fruition the more it was like the proverbial "Boiling a Frog" scenario. Each program they started pretty much failed and the main reason it kept going on and on is because they always had us to blame for their failures. We somehow managed to keep their fantasy world from forming.

Well, mabe not this time. Maybe we let the whole bunch of them run hog wild and implement everything they've been screaming for for the last 30 years. Then....when the pain hits right away people will hop out and look back and say "What the hell? That wasn't supposed to happen?" But...yes...yes it was supposed to happen and we told you it would and it did. Kinda like my dumb 17 year old know it all self before going out into the real world. It was so amazing that my Father got so smart later in life after he didn't know anything when I was a teenager. It will be kinda like that. We'll have to suffer while this is going on but the payoff will be worth it. Literally millions of young idiots will get a big dose of reallity, at least on a basic level.

They think they know it all! Well then.....show us oh wise ones.

This will get VERY interesting though since the Dems now hold all the cards... they are going to run out of "enemies" to point fingers at real soon. Then the internal feeding frenzy will start.

We all know that a Democrat politician can't move their lips without talking trash about someone, so next it is either each other or "We the People". I don't see a winning play either way.

re: #493 sitting

Uh, no. You're conflating two different concepts. Katrina was a "catastrophe". The emergency response to Katrina wasn't itself a catastrophe. The Louisiana National Guard and Louisiana Fish and Game employees responded promptly and effectively, saving an estimated 30,000 lives. That's the opposite of a "catastrophe", and you defame heroes by suggesting otherwise.

FEMA's performance was less stellar. They made serious mistakes, mostly in misreading and failing to understand the signs of catastrophic failure in some levees/dykes. They deserve the criticism that they got.

On the other hand, waiting around for a government bailout is not the American way, unless your at a big Wall Street bank that bought too much toxic paper. You seem to have missed that point.

501 Canoe Train  Wed, Jan 21, 2009 7:28:38am

Actually, I think they will be like other teenagers. When it (fill in the blank here) fails to work, they will still blame us. Some on the left are so fixed in the refusal to examine oneself that failure can only be the fault of someone else. IN other words, when they fail, they will still blame us, no matter what.

I'm not too sure how I shall rebut that.

Let's get our facts straight, thousands were stuck in freezing tunnels with no toilets during Obama's inauguration. Presumably Obama's people planned this event, there was plenty of time for preplanning and crowds seemed to fall very short of the number estimated prior to the event. They thought they would have more people but they still screwed up an event that happens every four years, and is wholly predictable.

How w they blame this on Bush?
