Obama Prepares to Close Gitmo

US News • Views: 2,934

On his first day in office, Barack Obama is preparing to keep one of his promises to the international left: Draft order calls for closing Guantanamo Bay.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The new Obama administration circulated a draft executive order Wednesday that calls for closing the controversial detention center at Guantanamo Bay within a year and halting any war crimes trials in the meantime.

Closing the facility in Cuba “would further the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States and the interests of justice,” read the draft prepared for the new president’s signature.

While some of the detainees currently held at Guantanamo would be released, others would be transferred elsewhere and later put on trial under terms to be determined.

Obama advisers are on the news channels today telling us this is going to restore America’s moral standing in the world. Good luck with that.

Someone sure has a perverted view of what constitutes our national security.

it'll happen, and then it will all be dragged through court after court after appeal after appeal and everyone will get so tired of following the issue, it will just go away... at least that's what our President is hoping methinks.

As has been amply pointed out by some commentators in recent days; Obama's wording on the subject of Gitmo is curiously slippery. He promises to IMMEDIATELY... begin looking at the problem... to think about how to maybe close Gitmo... in a year.

Could be, he's aware that this is a no-win solution, and is just buying time.

"Some would be released" Which ones? Who decides which ones? Where to?
Still no idea on where the others will be transferred to? Is that because they haven't thought that far ahead yet? Can we get an explanation of how making a bunch of European and Middle Eastern countries happy, by releasing people that admittedly want to take part in the destruction of America, can be seen as improving OUR national security?

Some of the prisons in South America are absolute hell holes where the prisoners run the prison (LITERALLY) and outcasts are left to fend for themselves - and they starve.

Released where? Many of the countries that these detainees are citizens of do not want them back. China doesn't want to take in the Uighurs. Others don't want their terrorists back either. For all the talk about how Gitmo is a human rights blight on the US, consider that the detainees are treated far more humanely there than any of those terrorists deserve. Many have ended up back in the jihad.

These aren't innocents that the US captured willy nilly. They were captured on battlefields where they were trying to kill Americans. They were captured because they were self-professed al Qaeda who sought to kill Americans.

But look and see how President Obama is now violating these terrorists rights by delaying their day in court. Obama is now calling for a 120 day delay so that he can review matters further. Had Bush done this, the ACLU and the media would be going crazy about how Bush is violating human rights, the US Constitution, and international law with such a directive. Here? Not so much.

Ok if you're running a city....worst that can happen is your garbage gets picked up late.......or your kids are made stupid......sheesh.
When they're running a country, the worst that can happen is lots of us get killed. All on the altar of their sanctimonious sensitivities......

Gitmo is the least of our worries. Retreaded post:

Feb. 12, 2009

In an Executive Order spanning the entire Guantanamo Bay issue, President Barack Obama has closed the prison, ordered the fencing and guard towers removed, and sent 486 FEMA trailers to the Cuban location.

Feb. 13, 2009

In a surprise attack yesterday, Cuban citizens stormed the former Guantanamo Bay detention facility, snatching up toilets, jumpsuits, and FEMA trailers. Stated one man, who wished to remain anonymous, "I have been looking through this fence at all this wealth and luxury for years. Look at this! They even have toilet paper with writing on it so you can relax in the bano. These Jihadists are decadent capitalist scum, and they should be reeducated by the People's Worker's Party's Reform Schools."

Feb. 14, 2009

In a massive rescue effort not seen in decades, the US Coast Guard spent all last night picking former Guantanamo Bay detainees out of the seas surrounding Cuba. Many pleaded with Coast Guard personnel to take them "anywhere but back to all those angry Communists."

Closing Gitmo doesn't mean release them. Obama just wants to move them next door to you.

No Gitmo Detainees to Pendleton

President-elect Barack Obama is preparing to issue an executive order his first week in office — and perhaps his first day — to close the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, according to two presidential transition team advisers. It's unlikely the detention facility at the Navy base in Cuba will be closed anytime soon. In an interview last weekend, Obama said it would be "a challenge" to close it even within the first 100 days of his administration. Read the article here.

Lawmakers have moved to block transfer of the detainees to at least two potential and frequently discussed military facilities: an Army prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and a Navy brig in Charleston, S.C. A Marine Corps prison at Camp Pendleton in Southern California also is under consideration, a Pentagon official said.

Closing Gitmo is Obama's meaningless appeasement gesture to the Libs. All it amounts to is political grandstanding and paper shuffling.

In a way, all the leftist lies about Gitmo being a den of torture helped us. It was good for terrorists to fear going to Gitmo.

But the leftists believed their own lies.

All that shit is a tactic.

They used it against Israel for decades - anyone remember the name of the INFAMOUS Israeli prison in S Lebanon that was the sight of unimagined torture?

Of course not, because the day after Israel pulled out, there was no reason for Israel's enemies to carry on the lie.

They say the same thing about every security prison - I've served in them.

It's a BS tactic.

There is NOT ONE leftist attack on the US and its military since 9/11 that hasn't already been used on Israel.

Misery loves company; the rest of the world will "like" us because it can rejoice in schadenfreude over our being subjected to the same terrorism that flourishes elsewhere.

so in other words, they are not going to like us at all.
they will feed on our misery.
anyone who thinks the rest of the world is going to like us, in weakness, knows nothing abt. human nature.
we will never reach the petty schadenfreude sob's.
we will only get respect from them by remaining strong.
any enlightened people out there looking at us, will like and admire us for not trying to impress them.
they will like us because we do the right thing, irrespective of the opinion of losers, who are out there, hoping to see us fail.
the O has no idea what i'm talking abt.

Note to President Obama:

1. You can't deport them because their home countries either don't want them or they will torture them.
2. You can't put them on trial in a regular court as the rules of evidence would apply and they would all be acquitted.
3. Do you really want to release them into America?

I fully support Geert's right to free speech but he should think about the implications of his calls to outlaw the Quran. It would restrict other people's freedom of religion. What he is proposing is equally unjust as his hate speech prosecution. It's a shame that Europeans don't have a more American concept of freedom and liberty.

In all fairness they are already calling the bible hate speech so why not put the koran to the same standards, heck the bible is mostly history, where as the Koran wants everyone to kill jooos and infidels if they don't covert.....TODAY!

Machiavelli has this to say:

Upon this a question arises: whether it be better to be loved than feared or feared than loved? It may be answered that one should wish to be both, but, because it is difficult to unite them in one person, is much safer to be feared than loved, when, of the two, either must be dispensed with. Because this is to be asserted in general of men, that they are ungrateful, fickle, false, cowardly, covetous, and as long as you succeed they are yours entirely; they will offer you their blood, property, life and children, as is said above, when the need is far distant; but when it approaches they turn against you. And that prince who, relying entirely on their promises, has neglected other precautions, is ruined; because friendships that are obtained by payments, and not by greatness or nobility of mind, may indeed be earned, but they are not secured, and in time of need cannot be relied upon; and men have less scruple in offending one who is beloved than one who is feared, for love is preserved by the link of obligation which, owing to the baseness of men, is broken at every opportunity for their advantage; but fear preserves you by a dread of punishment which never fails.

Achmed: "You spelled that wrong. It's T-E-R-R-O-R-I-S-T......not T-E-R-R-O-I-S-T.....vere you go to school you dumbhead"

Protester (sheepishly): "Berkeley......"

Or maybe they can do some editing for the AP as shown in the last line of the story.

Dont forget though, Israel did get their boats from France

On January 4, 1969, a week after de Gaulle made news with his announcement of the complete embargo on weapons bound for Israel, small crews made their way onto the boats. The Israeli crews spent three hours getting them ready. When all was set, they “raised the Israeli flag and set off. No one challenged them. They simply sailed into the English Channel and never returned.”

The French Minister of Defense demanded to know what had become of the ships. Mordecai Limon responded: “They were given orders to sail to Haifa. They belong to us.” Prime Minister de Gaulle was furious. So were others in the French Cabinet. But they got little help from the locals in the French coastal town of Cherbourg. “In Cherbourg, naval authorities and customs men simply shrugged their shoulders. By an extraordinary coincidence, no one seemed to have read a newspaper, watched television or listened to a radio during the preceding days. Said one of the local people: ‘We did not know anything of the embargo.’” Israel was lucky to have made some firm friends among the local population.

Officials in Cherbourg “claimed that they first heard of the embargo in a letter of instructions received from Paris on (January) 6th - 2 days after the boats had left. They produced documents and a statement from the post office supporting their claims.” They said something must have been wrong with the postal service.

re: #248 maddogg

Those sons of bitches should have been executed on the battlefield.

In his most recent novel, The Last Centurion, John Ringo pointed out that under the Hague Convention, when a war is underway, all combatants in a war zone are required to wear "a uniform or other recognizable symbol of allegiance to a combatant state." Meaning, they have to openly declare who they're fighting for. There is a three-day "grace period" in which "nonuniformed combatants" (guerrillas, etc.) may either (a) assume uniforms or some other sign of allegiance or (b) lay down their weapons and cease engaging in hostile action. After which, if caught engaged in such, they can legally be treated in the same way the Convention permits spies and saboteurs caught on a combatant nation's home soil in time of war are; that is, they can be shot, on sight, without trial or anything else.

Jihadists do not wear uniforms, admit to no national allegiance, and refuse to abide by the Hague Conventions. (Which specifically prohibit hiding behind noncombatants, taking hostages, attacking civilian populations, etc.) In fact, "terrorism", as we understand the term today, is itself a violation of the Hague rules for the conduct of war. And to get technical, when bin Laden, et al., declared that a "state of war" existed between them and the United States, they were from that point legally bound by the provisions of the Convention.

Ringo's point was that since 2001, we have been accepting surrenders from the jihadists that we were not legally required to accept. While in keeping with U.S. military SOP regarding foreign soldiers taken in combat, the jihadists, by their own definition, do not fit that definition. And their conduct, on and off the battlefield, routinely violates the rules of war, which in itself should remove them from any protection under the Hague Conventions and/or Geneva Accords.

/Simply noted in the interests of clarity.

322 mjwsatx  Wed, Jan 21, 2009 10:44:32am

Don't suppose that President BHO has spoken to this guy:

Closing GITMO would be a mistake
By Jeffrey Addicott - Special to the Express-News

The War on Terror demands moral as well as strategic clarity. It does not merely require military force against the “Taliban, al-Qaida or associated forces” identified by the 2006 Military Commissions Act as enemy combatants. It is also a public relations battle against the unrelenting waves of duplicitous propaganda lodged against almost every aspect of America’s war effort, from attacks on our military commissions process to our lawful detention of enemy combatants at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base (GITMO).

If soon-to-be President Obama closes down GITMO, as he may do via executive order as early as his first week in office, he will be providing a significant propaganda victory to our enemies. Even if Obama is attempting to derail the constant maligning of our detention operations in Guantanamo Bay, he is wrong in the assumption that closing down the facility will result in a public relations victory.

Closing down GITMO would create a public relations disaster that will expend far beyond the logistical problems of what to do with the 80 or so detainees slated for trial by military commissions, the 50 or so detainees that the U.S. wants to release but can find no nation in the world to take them, and the remaining 110 or so detainees deemed to pose a continuing terror threat to America or its allies.

Just because it deserves to be read again:

re: #119 lawhawk

What I know, 7 prisoners from Russia were released and sent back to Russia.5 are back in Russian jail(terrorist related charged). One was killed during anti-terrorist operation(He killed several special forces police officers during this operation). Before, He participated in several terrorist acts and killed number of people.

Do you think he will direct congress to undo their recent pay raise?

Of course, I don't feel too bad that they have to stay at $100,000 a year. He says he did this in the interest of "transparency". Not sure what he means by that.

I wrote my donk Congressman the other day and gave him an extraordinary suggestion, that the new Congress replace Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House. I'm sure I'm on his nutbar list now. Haven't gotten an answer yet either and don't expect one.

Obama advisers are on the news channels today telling us this is going to restore America’s moral standing in the world. Good luck with that.

I second the motion if it hasn't happened already.

re: #356 quickjustice

Restore our moral standing in the world? How about destroying the Obama Administration's moral standing with the families of the victims of 9/11 and other Americans who wanted the murderers, their allies, and those giving them aid and comfort brought to justice?

The Obama Administration will have blood on its hands as a consequence of this.

Does he or others within his administration really care?

371 mcmeador  Wed, Jan 21, 2009 12:50:36pm

This aggravates me to no end, but we would have gotten the same thing from McCain. I'd honestly rather a Democrat do it and be responsible for the outcome.

I'll wager the inmates won't want to leave.

Can we pick the prison?

373 Eric Cartman's Conscience  Wed, Jan 21, 2009 1:17:36pm

The Left and the world wants it closed precisely because it will work. There has never been a desire for America to be top dog. The world resents us for it. The collective admiration of Obama is actually the world celebrating our election of a man that will lessen America's stature and put us on equal footing with the rest of the world. Obama is the means to the end of American hegemony.

Send them to San Francisco, it's a safe haven city for immigrants anyway.

375 Brees  Wed, Jan 21, 2009 1:43:36pm

OK. Fine.

Release them all.........so they can all come back to Whakidurkhistan...............

...........and then our forces can kill all of them.

I am assuming that after all of the cruel torture at Git'mo..........we got whatever info we needed!

376 rexatosis  Wed, Jan 21, 2009 2:02:43pm

Great, lets close Gitmo and move a bunch of homicidal jihadist Al-Q's into the federal prison system so they can recruit new members like the Mexican Drug Cartels, Crips, Bloods, Latin Kings etc. Does Team Obama understand policy decisions have actual consequences? This is going to be a long four years.

377 Hanoch  Wed, Jan 21, 2009 2:08:26pm

It is telling that, with all that is going on in the world vying for the President's attention, Obama's first concern as he moves into office is to seek the well-being of a group of terrorists. I was (and am) willing to give Obama a fair shake, but this does not bode well.

1. Closed down Gitmo.

Here we go!

379 theheat  Wed, Jan 21, 2009 3:38:06pm

It's part of the new Adopt A Terrorist Program, where qualified applicants can offer homes to otherwise unwanted and undesirable terrorists.

Like pit bulls, Gitmo terrorists have been given a bad rap. With proper care and training they can be rehabilitated and lead productive lives. When raised properly, they are actually loving and sensitive creatures.

re: #35 Occasional Reader

As has been amply pointed out by some commentators in recent days; Obama's wording on the subject of Gitmo is curiously slippery. He promises to IMMEDIATELY... begin looking at the problem... to think about how to maybe close Gitmo... in a year.

Could be, he's aware that this is a no-win solution, and is just buying time.

Voting "present."

I wonder if the family of the first person killed by one of these 'victims of injustice' can sue the Obama administration for letting the animal loose.

383 swamprat  Wed, Jan 21, 2009 5:37:28pm

My President is making the world safer for America's enemies.

While talking to a moonbat, he said he wanted us to adhere to the Genieva Convention regarding Iraqi prisoners. I looked at him in shock.
"Really?"
"Oh yes."
"Wow! That's pretty harsh. A lot of those guys would be put on trial and shot as spies!"

His expression was worth the time I wasted being in his presence.

Yes, it is very telling! In BHO's mind's eye I suspect he sees himself as the ruler of the world rather than the duly elected leader of America. The present and future safety of Americans is evidently way down his list of priorities. Terrorists are far more important as his actions demonstrate...as he begins his rule as if he were the World's Defense counsel...of evil! I'd also say that this does not bode well...for Americans not at all...for terrorists it's no less than a dancing-in-the-streets moment of pure victory!...soon to be followed by bombs and death at home as well as American interests throughout the world, I fear. For the bad guys this is a huge victory which cannot be over-stated.

386 azul93gt  Thu, Jan 22, 2009 10:03:32am

I think that Obama Hussein expects the soon to be pardoned terrorists to join his volunteer corps to "build levees in the midwest." What a joke.

While I assume that this closing of Gitmo is a PR stunt and most of the terrorist being held still won't see the light of day for about 3 years or more (at least one hopes) it definitely sends out the message that the Euro-left want to hear, that America is in full retreat in the WOT.

387 Seax  Fri, Jan 23, 2009 2:07:16am

Perhaps MR O will rename Gitmo as
the " Flowering Unicorn Camp to Educate Dissidents".
The world will marvel as Gitmo gets changed to "F.U.C.E.D".
And hopefully we won't get that as well...
