I find this more than a bit disturbing. They had to take him to court and threaten jail in order to stop this halfwit from spreading the disease.
A tuberculosis patient who failed to take precautions to avoid spreading the illness will be tracked by GPS and could go to jail if he violates court orders requiring him to remain isolated.
CHAMPAIGN – A local man infected with tuberculosis will be monitored electronically and will have to stay in his residence during treatment except when health authorities allow him to leave, a judge ruled Wednesday.
If Clasance B. Botembe, 20, of Champaign, disobeys the order issued by Champaign County Circuit Judge John Kennedy, it would constitute a Class A misdemeanor and carry a sentence of up to a year in the county jail.
…
The health district will pay for the global positioning system device that monitors Botembe, as well as his rent, food and medication and will arrange for him to spend his isolation period in a hotel or motel. The order expires at the end of Botembe’s treatment or in 30 days.Botembe appeared at the hearing with Jerry Lyke, his appointed attorney. Botembe, a native of Congo, wore a white-and-blue mask hooked around his ears.

Wow, Sharm. Were people arguing that this shouldn’t be a component? I have a 17 year old daughter. We talk about this - I’ve laid the moral ground work (abstinence) but economics has been a huge piece of our discussion too. Don’t have sex if you aren’t ready to be a parent with everything that goes with it. I told her I don’t regret for one second having her, but as I was only 20, that decision meant I wasn’t going out to parties and bars like my friends did, and every cent we had went to her during some very, very lean years. If she isn’t ready to sacrifice $175 jeans for a long LONG time, being a parent shouldn’t be on her agenda, which means sex shouldn’t be either. Nothing is fool proof, except abstinence. Of course we talk about disease, boys being schmucks and telling her everything she wants to hear for one reason only (that mainly comes from her Daddy), etc. etc. Don’t mean to drag the topic here. Rant off.

So I am in the part of “Atlas Shrugged” where the scientific community is in a hiss due to receiving millions of dollars from the public and producing nothing…not because they produced nothing, but because Henry Reardon of Reardon Steel created a metal so strong it can carry more weight and trains can move faster. The scientists were pissed they were going to look bad and possibly lose there money…
Then I see the “Scientists overcome by Hopenchange” thread…

Castro says he doubts he’ll be lucid in 4 years
He’s been wrong for over fifty years.
Like in his column the previous day, Castro praised Obama as honest, writing: “No one could doubt the sincerity of his words when he affirms that he will convert his country into a model of freedom, respect for human rights in the world and the independence of other nations.”
Golly, just like in Cuba.

You brought up a lot of thoughtful Points Sharm..
Raising 3 boys and two girls..The approach to dealing with sexuality in this day and time is difficult.
It’s tough to raise kids nowadays. Even to teach them! I got into a discussion with two of my students who commented about a girl that was getting too physical with boys. All I could tell them was that it was not a good idea (I’m so limited in some of the things I can say to them as school) and that I would give them the same advice I give my daughters……keep your clothes on.
Thankfully, both of my daughters are modest and are not looking for a physical relationship, and both my sons know they have to be able to support a family before they can think about getting serious with a young woman.

You can add this- as a woman who grew up without her mother, it’s easy to not appreciate what you have when you have it. I miss my mother every day. I needed her as a child, as an adolescent, and I need her now. A caring mother should be cherished, even when she upsets you, because some day in the future, it will be too late.

CAIR ACTION ALERT #565
Action: Thank Obama for Order to Close Guantanamo Prisons
(WASHINGTON, D.C., 1/22/09) - CAIR is calling on American Muslims and others concerned with maintaining our nation’s ethical standards to thank President Obama for signing an executive order today to close down the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay within a year.
That order was one of three the President signed today. Another formally bans torture by U.S. interrogators, and the third establishes an interagency task force to set policies for the “apprehension, detention, trial, transfer or release of detainees.”

Is Austin that much of a moonbat DI type place?
I’m a UT alumna. Hook ‘em Horns. Yes, Austin particularly, has it’s fair share of moonbats. They do not refer to Texas as The Republic of Texas.
The Republicans in that area are separated into moderates and conservatives. On a gradient scale of 1 to 5, the moderates, being a 2, and the conservatives being a 4.
Then you have the staunch conserves who are 5+.

you will both appreciate this. My 17 year old doesn’t explode often, but when she does, stand back. I tend to feed into it, and try to point out how irrational she is being, which really isn’t helpful. My husband, on the other hand, tends to make quiet, but effective points with no yelling or screaming. For example, during one of these fits, she slammed the door, opened it and yelled she didn’t need any of us, and slammed it again. He grabs a few tools, calmly walks upstairs, calmly takes the door off it’s hinges, puts the door in the guest room, and calmly walks back down stairs. She stood there stunned.

Well said.
To recap week one of ‘Operation Hopenchange’…we got a SecTreas who evaded taxes, a SecState who is financially beholden to many foreign countries-and the hope that ‘white will do what’s right’….
Hell of a week.
Yeah. And, you’ve surely seen a dog in “submissive posture”…underbelly exposed, ears back, tail between its legs (wagging hopefully)…That’s the current crop of Republicans on the hill.

A lot of people do, it’s a very common habit mostly among non-classical/self taught players. If you’re playing through a pickup and an amp it’s not that bad but it does really inhibit the acoustic sound even if you’re playing through a microphone. It’s also really bad for your hand. A lot of people wil end un with carpell tunnel from it.

How come tax and housekeeper problems aren’t affecting Geithner?
Kennedy quits.
ALBANY — Problems involving taxes and a household employee surfaced during the vetting of Caroline Kennedy and derailed her candidacy for the Senate, a person close to Gov. David A. Paterson said on Thursday, in an account at odds with Ms. Kennedy’s own description of her reasons for withdrawing.
Geithner moves on.
After a delay of less than a week, the Senate Finance Committee began grilling Geithner today and, seeking to pre-but any questions about his tax snafu, the Treasury Secretary designate called the errors “avoidable” but “unintentional.

Hearkening back to an earlier thread, maybe this is an area in which we can work “with Islamic leaders and countries such as Iran on issues of mutual interest.”
Iranian authorities hanged 22 people over the past two days…Ten people were mass executed on Wednesday in Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison, the state-run news agency Fars reported, adding that an eleventh man had his execution postponed for a month. It said that he witnessed the other 10 people being hanged. He is expected to be hanged in February.

It’s an old (for this continent) and damp city. Plus a great center of trade for several hundred years. Lots of “old” families, imported goods back in the old days compared to other cities in the South, etc.
Not to mention the entire surrounding gulf coast area. Lots of collectors, private libraries, civil war memorabilia.
Biloxi, Oxford, etc.

Who ever figured a bunch of knuckle-dragging, gun-loving, religion clinging redneck cons would be talking about opera at LGF?
LOL-I wonder how many operas ‘The Messiah’ has attended…
This knuckle-dragging, gun loving, religion clinging redneck con has a Master of Music degree!

Have you ever attended The Met’s Live in HD at a local movie theater. I saw La Boheme last year. I was wonderful and the theater was packed.

I’ve honestly not seen that offered here in Co Springs-but then I wasn’t looking for it either. May have to look into that. Good experience I take it ?

Indeed. I know this sounds cliched but it was almost like being on stage.

Check The Met web site for links to what movie theaters in your area participate.

ok, since there’s so many Apple lovers out there…
In iTunes, how the heck to you get it to show what track it’s currently playing? Seems like a basic need when playing tracks off a big music library. I’ve looked all over the place and can’t find anything.

I am working on an opera right now. It is from 1912, and I am restoring the score and parts from paper files that have almost gone to dust. I am working from photographs of pages at times. The opera will be played in Monaco this May.
Who composed it, if that’s not too inquisitive a question….

Why do all these guys slap their guitars the same way? Yes, technically proficent. Musically boring and annoying. No melody to speak of…slap..strum..slap…
Give me Michael Hedges and William Ackerman any day.

Thanks for posting this, Charles. You must be a player to appreciate the different styles and artists that fill out your musical tastes. For anyone interested, Antoine has another song that anyone would probably enjoy and appreciate called “Catching the Light.”

Antoine has wonderful melodic sensibilities in my opinion, although I wouldn’t call him the most original. His music wears on me after a while. As a whole, I’d take Don Ross over anyone.
