Saudi Arabia Moves In

World • Views: 2,359

Our friends the Saudis wasted no time putting the thumbscrews on our new hopenchange President: Obama discusses Gaza with Saudi ruler.

WASHINGTON, Jan 23 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Friday asked Saudi King Abdullah for support in halting weapons smuggling into Gaza and underscored the importance of U.S.-Saudi ties in his first talks with the Arab ruler since becoming president, the White House said.

Obama spoke to Abdullah during a series of phone calls with foreign leaders, including British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the White House said in a statement.

The call to Abdullah coincided with the publication of an article by Prince Turki al-Faisal, a former Saudi intelligence chief and ambassador to the United States, warning Obama the United States was putting Saudi ties at risk with its stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In an article on the Financial Times website, Turki said former President George W. Bush had left a “sickening legacy” in the Middle East.

“If the U.S. wants to continue playing a leadership role in the Middle East and keep its strategic alliances intact — especially its ‘special relationship’ with Saudi Arabia — it will have to drastically revise its policies vis-a-vis Israel and Palestine,” Turki said.

That's pretty rich- I can think of no more sickening a legacy for the middle east to have been left than that of mohammed.

WASHINGTON -- President Obama warned Republicans on Capitol Hill today that they need to quit listening to radio king Rush Limbaugh if they want to get along with Democrats and the new administration.

"You can't just listen to Rush Limbaugh and get things done," he told top GOP leaders, whom he had invited to the White House to discuss his nearly $1 trillion stimulus package.

One White House official confirmed the comment but said he was simply trying to make a larger point about bipartisan efforts.

"There are big things that unify Republicans and Democrats," the official said. "We shouldn't let partisan politics derail what are very important things that need to get done

There's a reason why Ataturk ditched the agonal Caliphate about eighty years ago; there's a reason why people aren't exactly breaking down the gates to emigrate to Iran; there's a reason why Islamic "scholars" are found leading such exemplar states as Taliban Afghanistan, Somalia, Iran and Gaza.

When Obama talked about extending a hand to anyone with an unclenched fist, I think he assumed there'd be money in that fist. Taxpayer money.

Not sure. What is the difference so I can ask him?

They are three types of polyps that can occur in the colon. Obviously, the tubular-villous polyps are a combo of the other two. Villous polyps are less common, but about 40 percent of them become cancerous. Cancer develops in about 22 percent of all tubular-villous polyps. I can't find any quick statistics on the tubular polyps. My doctor told me that mine (tubular-villous) would likely have turned cancerous in two years. But of course, that doesn't bring into consideration how quickly the cancer would have grown, whether symptoms would have cropped up, etc. etc.

As long as your brother has a regular colonoscopy per the doctor's suggestion (mine said every two years), then he should be okay. You may want to get one yourself, and his kids should get one at the age that corresponds to about five years before his were discovered.

Does that help?

He probably was so taken with her for going after Ted Stevens and Co. that he didn't vet her well enough or even understand how fiscally conservative she is.. she surprised him - and in some instances I think he left her hanging out there to dry.

The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. In Obama's case it's lying, evading, manipulating, ignoring corruption, enabling corruption etc, etc. - and he's still the same person he always was, wo why bother to give him the benefit of the doubt.

obama and his crew have never been people of integrity, and are still not people of integrity. And it's leaking out all over...

BINGO!

If anything, "who he always was" will only get worse now that he has the reins of the most powerful office in the world.

The esteem and honor we have seen in the White House wasn't there by virtue of the office, it was there by the virtue of he MAN/MEN who held the office.

Obama doesn't possess those qualities.

re: #186 vxbush

I had a colonoscopy for my 60th, same sort of diagnosis.
They told me to come back in 5 years.
I had the presence of mind to say "sounds like you're not real worried about this".
The reply was "Not really. Pretty common".

There is always the hope of reform and the chance that donning the robes of office will change the man. On that basis, I was willing to give our new president the benefit of the doubt. It seems that he is trying to prove me wrong.

Now I have to work for the preservation of our republic. Damn.

A Third Term?

This is on the Chicago Tribune Website

January 20, 2009
A New York Congressman wants to make it possible for Barack Obama to one day serve a third term. Rep.e Jose Serrano (D) has introduced a bill in the House to abolish the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, which limits presidents to two consecutive terms or 10 years in office.

He has just been inaugurated and this joker is talking about allowing a third term! This is shades of Hugo Chavez!

I think my problem is that I haven't been drinking my Obama brand Kool-Aid.

Um, before getting all bent out of shape about Obama placing a call to Abdullah and al-Turki spouting off in a British venue, let's all pause to recall the man whose administration gave us at least an additional 15,000 Saudi students (all of whom are of course accounted for, right?), whose Secretary of State told us all about the "benevolence at the heart of Islam", and who personally smooched and fondled and sword-danced and played händchenhalten with the goaty old Saudi despot at absolutely every opportunity he could find.

(Not an American here, so enlighten me. Thanks.)

It limits the President to 2 terms, but repealing it would require another amendment to the Constitution. It would also open the Presidency up to Clinton and Bush again. Even if people are working on this, passing an amendment to the Constitution is difficult (for a reason). It takes a 2/3 vote in both houses of Congress, then a 3/4 vote by the states. I doubt they could pass this in time to help 0bama, and from logboy's comment, it sounds like it's not even happening.

"...The theory behind the 22nd Amendment is that modern day presidents exercise too much power and authority to be allowed access to it for very long. On the other hand, the presidency is the only federal office that is term-limited. The same arguments in favor of limiting presidents' time in office can be applied to Representatives and Senators as well."

Democrats like people to vote, but only if they vote the right (by which I mean Left)way. How many times in how many places have the democrats tried to get absentee votes from the military thrown out? For that matter, what the fuck is up with letting two Democrats and one Republican vote on what the voter's intent was as opposed to what that voter actually voted?

The Democrats have given us ample reason to doubt that they are acting in good faith, and that was before they elected their own personal Messiah to be President.

Hot Air also reported on the term limit bill submitted by a Democrat.

Move to repeal Presidential term limits started

Maybe I’m just being too cynical, but somehow I doubt that Rep. José Serrano introduced HJ Res 5 in order to allow George W Bush to run for a third term in office. One week ago, the New York Democrat introduced a measure to repeal the 22nd Amendment, which provides the only term limit on federal office — the Presidency. The amendment, added in 1951, restricts anyone from seeking a third term in office, and Serrano wants that repealed.

Why now? Apparently, the notion of Hope and Change has overwhelmed Serrano to the point that he just can’t stand to see Barack Obama limited to two terms in office. Never mind the fact that Obama has yet to start his first term, and no one knows yet whether he’d get re-elected in 2012. Maybe it’s that New Deal vibe; Serrano may want to prepare the way for a more tangible comparison between Obama and FDR in 2016 and 2020.

I think people are gloating about the Obama's weakness little too much. These have been Republican weaknesses as well. I have yet to see anything Obama has done that Bush and/or McCain would have done. People are gloating instead of recognizing the "real" problem.

Might need an edit, unless I have completely misunderstood your previous comments.

I had that done also about 7 years ago. Once the polyps are removed, the threat is completely gone. Thus the importance of a colonoscopy at age 50 (without symptoms) or immediately upon appearance of warning symptoms. My symptoms were a dull lower front abdominal ache and slight rectal bleeding. Got a referral and had the procedure done within 2 weeks. As polyps grow very slowly, the doctor did not feel a need for regular followup. I was 41 years old at the time.

Hope this eases your mind.

His doctor will recommend any necessary followup.

Obama has the only two qualities that matter to the left and the MFM. He looks good and he has a golden voice. As long as he has those two qualities, he will be like a god unto them.

McCain pledge to close Gitmo, which Obama did. Bush kissed the collective asses, which Buch has done for the past 8 years. Obama relaxed the regulations on embryonic stem cell, as McCain would have done. Obama nixed the rules on aggressive interrogations as McCain pledged we would have. Despite the outpouring of outrage we have not yet seen anything Bush or McCain would have done (aside from relaxing the rules on abortion and birth control counseling in foreign aid)....which is something I support. We are not witnessing outrageous things these past few days. We are witnessing what was going to happen no matter who was elected. The differences are completely cosmetic.

I say it was foolish strategy by Obama to so quickly and publicly dismantle anti-terror intelligence operations.

If there is one thing Bush-Cheney got right, it was protecting the homeland from another 9/11 style attack. And now Obama is taking full responsibility if some sleeper succeeds at some plot that may have very well eluded detection even with the full force of the Bush era tactics.

Obama obviously wants to make a big splash each time he parts with Bush policy but its dumb to brag about how your dumping the policies that actually worked.

You will. People have no idea how valuable it is to be able to see until they lose it. They don't know what it's like to have to ask everyone to take you anyplace- even the dr or the store, and try to fit it into THEIR schedules out of the goodness of their hearts. You have no idea what it's like looking for a shelf-stocker in the store to help you see what you're buying. ...or taking a HUGE magnifying glass along just to see if you're buying soup or vegetables. You can't watch tv... just listen to it. You can't read, and if you use the internet you have to have a huge adapter on it to magnify things so huge that a few words take up the whole screen. That takes a lot of time to read through, but your eyes get too tired to do very much of it. Now, with my contact lenses, I really can see 20/20 in both eyes. Unfortunately, I have some kind of problem with my stitches in my eyes today; I went to the dr because I thought one of them had popped; but it wasn't.... it was just a HUGE abrasion in my eyes that hurts like that dickens, so I can't wear my contacts. My vision, unfortunately, can't be corrected to even 20/80 with glasses, but with hard contacts it can be corrected. It's just the pits when I can't wear them for one reason or another. Actually, if you click on my name you'll see one of the websites I have. I own a free Yahoo support group for people who have the same disease I had.... and people join it on the brink of suicide because not only are they going blind, but each of their kids has a 50% chance of inheriting it from them. It's a real downer. It's donors like you who give us hope! We have a new chance at life again like normal people! Thank you!

Just because he says that he's shutting that down doesn't necessarily make it so.

Perception is reality. If Obama says he is shutting them down then any attack becomes his fault even if nothing ever changed. Thats my point. He has nothing to gain and everything to lose with that tack.

Glad to hear that. My mom is mostly blind as well. Early onset of cataracts when she was a teenager. Fortunately for her laser eye surgery was able to give her some vision. I still find it humourous to watch the expression of people when my mom pulls out her monocular to read something on a screen that's ten feet or so away. How she watches t.v. as well. But I have said this before, she's one tough cookie, and she will probably bury me first. :)

/joke I say to her from time to time. She has lived cleaner then me.

re: #133 vxbush

Having just gone through something similar, may I ask a followup question: were these tubular-villous polyps, tubular polyps, or villous polyps? (My spelling may be off.) It matters which one it was, if you know.

Not so much.

Its true that in theory, the rarer villous ones are more likely to "go bad", but that distinction mattered more thirty years ago before modern colonoscopy, when there were just fixed proctoscopes and barium enemas, and it wasn't so easy to take out polyps without major surgery.

Nowadays with the wonder colonoscopes, the distinction between tubular adenomas and villous adenomas (or the semi-arbitrary tubulo-villous or villo-tubular ones) isn't quite so important.

In either case, the lesion needs to be totally removed, if possible. The vast majority of the time, this can be done endoscopically, without surgery.

The more important distinctions (if you want to subclassify these things), is whether the lesion in question is a raised polyp, or a flat (eg "sessile") one, and whether or it has high-grade dysplasia, which is a more advanced pre-cancerous change. The flat lesions may require surgery to remove, and removal is considered mandatory if the lesion in question has high-grade dysplasia.

“If the U.S. wants to continue playing a leadership role in the Middle East and keep its strategic alliances intact — especially its ‘special relationship’ with Saudi Arabia — it will have to drastically revise its policies vis-a-vis Israel and Palestine,” Turki said.

Well Mr. President, it has only been thee days and the Saudis are already calling you out. I'm interested in seeing what you and Hillary are going to do about it. You see, most of us have been watching the situation between Israel and Palestine for decades and realize that the Palis have been playing the world (and the United States in particular) for suckers for a very long time and getting away with it.

This ain't Chicago. The Arabs play by a different set of rules that are much rougher than what you grew up with. We are watching to see if you have the brass to call their hand.

Interesting story here regarding outgoing US Ambassador to Iraq, Ryan C. Crocker, a man who I think would make an excellent Presidential candidate in 2012.

Back in 2002..

then Secretary of State, Colin Powell ordered Crocker and then Special Assistant to the Secretary of State, William Burns to prepare a secret memo examining the risks associated with a U.S. invasion of Iraq. The six-paged memo, titled "The Perfect Storm", stated that toppling Saddam Hussein could unleash long-repressed sectarian and ethnic tensions, that the Sunni minority would not easily relinquish power, and that powerful neighbors such as Iran, Syria and Saudi Arabia would try to move in to influence events. It also cautioned that the United States would have to start from scratch building a political and economic system because Iraq's infrastructure was in tatters.

And now..

BAGHDAD, Jan. 22 -- Ryan C. Crocker, the outgoing U.S. ambassador to Iraq, warned Thursday that a precipitous withdrawal of American troops runs "some very serious risks," from the resurgence of the insurgent group al-Qaeda in Iraq to a collapse of faith in a nascent Iraqi state that still faces what he called "enormous challenges."
A loss of confidence, Crocker said, could create a "chilling effect," where people "pull back, dig the trenches, build the berms and get ready for what comes next.

President Obama, ignore Ryan Crocker at your own peril.

The Saudi princes have long been very conservative about taking risks. This sort of behavior on their part seems reckless. And this guy is an Ambassador to the US, no less.

His rudeness and threatening behavior go well beyond what might be expected for some testing and probing of a new president. The fact that our new president is a black man may have been the immediate cause of this contemptuous behavior on the part of this Turki jerk. The Saudi princes may look down on black men as only being fit for slaves. That racism may be part of the reason for this sort of despicable threatening behavior by this PoS.

"Just prior to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Prince Turki was removed from his post as chief of Saudi Arabia's Foreign Intelligence Service, a position he held for 25 years. Most explanations for his abrupt departure revolved around his controversial ties to Osama bin Laden. Prince Turki himself admitted to meeting with bin Laden several times during the 1980s in the hopes of recruiting him to join the fight against the Soviets in Afghanistan. Bin Laden later became a sworn enemy of the royal family after King Fahd agreed to back the U.S. during the Gulf War and his Saudi citizenship was revoked in 1994. In 1998, some sources reported that Prince Turki had secretly negotiated with Taliban leader Mullah Omar for bin Laden's extradition. But others, such as the families of 9/11 victims, charged that Turki had actually paid protection money to al-Qaeda in exchange for promises not to attack the kingdom or make moves to destabilize its government. Yet another theory held that Turki was a victim of a complex power struggle that pitted Prince Nayef against Crown Prince Abdullah."

"Prince Turki took over the important position of Ambassador to the United States after Prince Bandar stepped down from the post in July, 2005. Prince Turki is viewed as a capable, Westernized politician who may be receptive to pressure from Washington that the Saudi government do more to fight terror within its borders."

Quote: "No matter how exalted the aims of the U.S. in the [Iraq] war, in the final analysis it was a colonial war very similar to the wars conducted by the ex-colonial powers when they went out to conquer the rest of the world."

I get so freeking sick of these Arab states wanting the U.S. to rein in Israel. They criticize us for our relationship to Israel and letting Israel do anything they want BUT will they do anything to rein in hamas? Will they condemn hamas's actions and the shooting of 8,000 rockets at Israeli citizens during the past 8 years? Will they criticize hamas suicide bombers blowing up Israeli citizens including children? Nooooo! You will not read ANY criticism of hamas in any Arab newspaper. They buddy up to hamas while we're supposed to trash Israel. There is no compromising with these idiots! I hope Obama sticks to his guns and does not waver in his support of Israel. If he does this, you will see the same slander and vitriol directed at him in the Arab newspaper editorials as there was against President Bush. American politics and foreign policy are the things the Arabs LOVE to hate!
