I've written about so many cross border tunnels that I start to visualize the border like a slice of Swiss cheese with an endless army of moles burrowing new holes just as fast as the passageways are found.

Most of the time the tunnels are found north of the border and that means a lot of waiting around and shooting the breeze with law enforcement types south of the border until the tunnel entrance is located in Mexico. A typical tunnel isn't very user friendly: Think cramped, dusty and crudely made. This week's tunnel in Tecate turned out to be more sophisticated than I anticipated

U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush, D-Ill., is hoping to pass a firearm-licensing bill that will significantly rewrite gun-ownership laws in America.

Among the more controversial provisions of the bill are requirements that all handgun owners submit to the federal government a photo, thumb print and mental heath records. Further, the bill would order the attorney general to establish a database of every handgun sale, transfer and owner's address in America.

The bill claims its purpose is "to protect the public against the unreasonable risk of injury and death associated with the unrecorded sale or transfer of firearms to criminals and youth."

Rush's proposed bill, H.R. 45, is alternatively known as "Blair Holt's Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009," named after an Illinois teenager killed by a gunshot.

According the bill's text, "On the afternoon of May 10, 2007, Blair Holt, a junior at Julian High School in Chicago, was killed on a public bus riding home from school when he used his body to shield a girl who was in the line of fire after a young man boarded the bus and started shooting."

The bill then argues that interstate firearm trafficking and children dying from gun violence create legitimate cause for the federal government to monitor gun ownership and transfers in new ways.

If passed, the bill would make it illegal to own or possess a "qualifying firearm" – defined as any handgun or any semiautomatic firearm that takes an ammunition clip – without a "Blair Holt" license.

To obtain a "Blair Holt" license, an application must be made that includes a photo, address, all previous aliases, thumb print, completion of a written firearm safety test, release of mental health records to the attorney general and a fee not to exceed $25.

Further, the bill makes it illegal to transfer ownership of a qualifying firearm to anyone who is not a licensed gun dealer or collector. Exceptions to this rule include transfer to family members by gift or bequest and loans, not to exceed 30 days, of a firearm for lawful purposes "between persons who are personally known to each other."

The bill also requires qualifying firearm owners to report all transfers to the attorney general's database. It would also be illegal for a licensed gun owner to fail to record a gun loss or theft within 72 hours or fail to report a change of address within 60 days.

And if a minor obtains a weapon and injures someone with it, the owner of the gun – if deemed to have failed to meet certain safety requirements – faces a multiple-year jail sentence.

H.R. 45 is a resurfacing of 2007's H.R. 2666, which contained much of the same language and was co-sponsored by 15 other representatives and Barack Obama's current chief of staff, Rahm Emmanuel. H.R. 2666 was assigned to the House Judiciary committee, where no action was taken.

H.R. 45 currently has no co-sponsors and is likewise assigned to the House Judiciary committee.

According to the proposed law, nobody will be able to sell any ammunition after June 30, 2009 unless that ammunition is coded. Furthermore, any privately held uncoded ammunition -- including hand-loaded ammo -- must be destroyed by 2011. They also plan to charge a five-cent tax on each new round, so every new box of ammo you buy will go up by at least $2.50 or more.

The average citizen will thus be breaking the law, if he owns any non-coded ammunition. (The status of shotgun ammo is not known at this time.)

I had my commander come through for a room inspection on a Friday afternoon and tell me he wanted my room painted by Monday morning. My room mate and I went to supply to get some paint but they had left and it was closed. I told the 1SG and he said to "just get some damn paint and paint the damn room and do what you are told". My room mate and I as well as a couple of my friends sat around drinking that night trying to figure out where we could acquire some paint. One of the guys stated they had been painting conexs over at the other battalion so we drifted over there and sto... picked up a couple of cans of paint as well as the gear they had left sitting outside the supply room door.

We painted that whole room, ceiling and walls, flat black. That looked so bitchen we went to the mall that night and picked up some black curtains to go with it.

The commander had a right little fit standing in my doorway and promptly went to his office. The 1SG sent us to see him only to find he had scheduled appointments with mental hygiene for the both of us for pysch evals. When I was talking to the Colonel (the shrink), he stated I had no problem, so the two of us spent about two hours just BSing, smoking and drinking coffee. He did suggest I find more practical methods of dealing with unreasonable people though.

And it took more than six coats of paint to cover that crap up.

Gotta tell ya, it really takes a good Chef to make some of that stuff taste wonderful. I got a good one, there. We got married 10 years ago and EVERYTHING she fixes is absolutely great. (Except for Tofu Hotdogs just one time, and we got that ironed out in a hurry.)

Gained 20 pounds, and am currently looking for a good exercise program.

Nah was a good 10 years and 12 moves ago. Was in 18th Airborne Corps as a corp asset. Nominally part of 82d LRSD but stolen by corps and forced into doing their dirty work of making non combat units have better Combat readiness scores. It's part of the reason I had so many awards every 3 months or so i was sent either to another unit to aid in training and received an AAM after or I was deployed to random places for random reasons. Or the funnest one of the Bunch was when I was assigned with to an Airforce test Company to certify the C-17 for heavy drop, halo, and Static line jumps. Just found it funny cliff diving made me suicidal when I routinely jumped out of perfectly good airplanes to make sure others were safe when they did it.

no such thing as a perfectly good airplane. Just one the law of averages hasn't caught up with yet. Most crack up on landing...get off half way.
