Then they have room to judge the oppressors as bad and the victims as good without looking at any root causes, because as all moral relativists know- Evil is the victim of Good.

We had a dusting last night, partially cloudy today, and they say we may have a better chance of snow Sunday night through Monday morning.

At least it's in the 30's today and teens last night. On Thursday, it was 71. I like winter in the winter.

Troubled OneUnited Bank in Boston didn't look much like a candidate for aid from the Treasury Department's bank bailout fund last fall.

The Treasury had said it would give money only to healthy banks, to jump-start lending. But OneUnited had seen most of its capital evaporate. Moreover, it was under attack from its regulators for allegations of poor lending practices and executive-pay abuses, including owning a Porsche for its executives' use.

Nonetheless, in December OneUnited got a $12 million injection from the Treasury's Troubled Asset Relief Program, or TARP. One apparent factor: the intercession of Rep. Barney Frank, the powerful head of the House Financial Services Committee.

Mr. Frank, by his own account, wrote into the TARP bill a provision specifically aimed at helping this particular home-state bank. And later, he acknowledges, he spoke to regulators urging that OneUnited be considered for a cash injection.

I like to tell the story of how I didn't like to sleep in the dark when I was little.

When I was 2, everytime it was time for me to go to sleep, my parents would turn off the light, and I would begin yelling and screaming loudly, until they turned it back on.

This worked quite well for a while, but eventually my parents got smart and just left the light off. Regardless of how long or how loud I yelled, they stopped turning the lights on for me. By the time I was 3, I had accepted the situation, and would sleep in a dark room.

In short, I explain to people that I have been a liberal, but I outgrew it by age 3.

A number of factors, Jan/Feb is the slowest months in regional theatre around here, the economy and the fact that we always slot one of our more dramatic pieces into this time slot. We are into our 3rd week, and we haven't broken 50 patrons any night except opening night, and that was a lot of industry people that night.

Leftism cannot be understood as an intellectual phenomenon because it isn't one. It is an emotional phenomenon. Notice how much of the leftist agenda involves emotional descriptors; "hate," "sensitivity," "compassion," "hope" etc. Leftists choose their loyalties based on the likelihood of emotional satisfaction for themselves, not on the real-world consequences that might devolve upon others when no one is looking. In this respect, the problem with leftist ideology is not that it is self-contradictory as much as it is self-congratulatory. The fearsome demonstrators always manage to find a way to "speak truth to power" from safe venues. Courageous speech is not that which might land you in a gulag, it is that which might let you hang out with Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon, and allow you to pretend that your staged "courage" is as virtuous as the real thing.

To understand real leftists, consider the ongoing calls for prosecution of Bush administration officials. While the more rational person might be puzzled by this seemingly obsessive behavior, it does demonstrate something of the leftist's view of himself. It is not enough that Bush policies be the result of differences of opinion, or good faith disputes as to the best solutions to difficult problems. No, it is necessary to show that anyone who disagrees with the lefty view of the world does so out of bad character, with the implicit implication that anyone who did not agree with Bush did not simply embrace a better policy, but was a better person.

Leftists demonstrate against the U.S. and Israel, even though it seems to support despicable behavior, because such demonstrations are a way to pretend to be principled on the cheap. It really doesn't cost anything to call America names or make bizarre moral allusions regarding the actions of Israel, from the security of a western democracy. To leftist emotions, it is immaterial that such demonstrations embolden dictatorships, genocidal theologies, misogynistic anachronisms, and a lack of concern for the innocent. What is important is that in that isolated moment, wrapped in a Kaffiyeh and surrounded by thousands of others seeking nothing more than the same immature gratification, that you can think of yourself as a really wonderful guy.

The Haftarah (Prophets) reading for this week in Judaism, is amazingly timely.

It is from Ezekiel 28-29, and warns Israel against relying on Egypt for protection, and warns Egypt about 40 years of devastation because it did not support Israel.

The "Spain once was Muslim" argument was also a reason for their being targeted/singled out for their support of the US operation in Iraq. It is truly a shame that we lost Aznar as an allied government as a result of terrorism (well, because of his poor handling of the bombing right before the election anyway).

Had you been bombed by terrorists as former Pres. Aznar had been bombed by ETA terrorists (car bomb) who already murdered over 800 Spaniards, assuming ETA was responsible for bombing fellow Spaniards might not have been unreasonable.

Like President Bush said in New York two days after the 9/11/01 attacks, Aznar should have just said "We will punish (or bring to justice) the people who did this."
