Now officials from the winning school say they are trying to do the right thing by seeking a forfeit and apologizing for the margin of victory.
In a statement Thursday on The Covenant School's Web site, the head of school said, "It is shameful and an embarrassment that this happened." He went on to say that Covenant has made "a formal request to forfeit the game recognizing that a victory without honor is a great loss."

No, jiaogulan is this herbal stuff; gynostemma (leave it alone, people - it's just a name) pentaphyllum. Five-leaf southern ginseng, as the Chinese call it. Supposed to be a good general-purpose herb for those somewhat run-down; was once part of imperial Chinese medicine, for prolonging and enhancing the lives of the imperial household.
Very nice, very mellow flavor; drink it for about a week, and you do notice you feel slightly better.

Best all-around tea, if you like the greens, is, of course lung ching (dragon well); you like a little fermented tea, maybe? Oolong is nice, with Kwan Yin being very pleasant indeed. Moving up the scale in fermented teas, there's a range of options, before you come to the king of all fermented teas, the aforementioned pu-erh.
Pressed in bricks (like other herbal substances) and aged in caves or other cool, dry places, sometimes for years, there's a flavor and color that simply cannot be described. There's a rich, almost earthy smell to the bricks, with a slightly sweet almost mushroom odor to the tea as it brews.
Buy it in bing cha (look like little bird's nests) for greatest convenience. You can't over-brew it, either. Money well spent, too, as you can get three or more infusions off a good pu-erh.

From what I heard on the sports station, they left their starters in and continued to use a full press for the entire game to attain 100-0. Some people are complaining poor sportsmanship not putting in the scrubs in the second half. I was just watching a show on Nat Geo that was a sort of documentary about a recent cult (Strong City, I think it was called). The relevant bit was when a Ph. D. Psychologist was discussing the peculiarities of cult members.
To paraphrase, she remarked that often, cult leaders would make a prophecy of some sort or another, or maybe many prophecies. These would invariably fail to come to pass. But rather than become disillusioned, cult members would become even more fervent, and believe even more strongly.
This seems to have direct correlation to those that believe in Anthropogenic Global Warming. Their various cult leaders continue to make dire prophecies that fail to come true, and yet, their followers continue to get more fervent, and more willing to burn skeptics (filthy deniers!) at the stake.
Keep in mind, last year Al Gore predicted the Arctic would be "ice-free" in five years. But don't worry, if the ice were to double in volume, this would merely be morphed into stronger evidence of AGW.

Obama administration warns public to expect rise in US casualties
The Obama administration warned the US public yesterday to brace itself for an increase in American casualties as it prepares to step up the fight against al-Qaida and the Taliban in Afghanistan and the border regions of Pakistan.
Against a background of widespread protests in Pakistan and Afghanistan over US operations since Obama became president, the vice-president, Joe Biden, said yesterday that US forces would be engaged in many more operations as it takes the fight to its enemies in the region.
The Obama administration is to double the number of US troops in Afghanistan to 60,000 and when asked in a television interview if the US public should expect more American casualties, Biden said: "I hate to say it, but yes, I think there will be. There will be an uptick."

Keep in mind, last year Al Gore predicted the Arctic would be "ice-free" in five years. But don't worry, if the ice were to double in volume, this would merely be morphed into stronger evidence of AGW.
*sigh*
I have an acquaintance insisting that the reason for the colder winter is precisely because of AGW/ACC. Could not give me ANY details as to how that happens, but that is really what they believe.

re: #89 OldLineTexan
I appreciate the info; may have to find some. I have a stash of oolongs and pu-erhs in the kitchen, but I realize there is a universe out there.
re: #101 Guanxi88
And don't even get me started on tea-pots and teaware. For a really good tea, you want a purple clay teapot, unglazed. Use one pot for each type of tea, and never change up, or you'll wreck the taste. After a while, a really nice Yixing pot will absorb enough tea essence that you can, if the need arises, actually just pour in hot water and get a pot of tea with no tealeaves needed. (Goes without saying - only rinse, never wash, a yixing pot.)
The pride of my collection? A jade tea pot and 8 jade tea cups. Second prize goes to a frosty jade gaiwan (get one, even if it's not made of jade - very classy, very traditional way to have your tea).

I heard a couple of the losing girls interviewed & it sounded to me like they had other issues.
Even if they had no issues, to run up a 100 to 0 score is tremendous bad sportsmanship. Maybe there should be a slaughter rule, but there is not. At some point you call off the offense or at least get your starters out sooner. This was nothing but cruel.

So if the game was a mismatch, then the coach should have refused to play. From the article, it does not seem to be a surprise that the losing team lost, i.e. a very small school with a limited talent pool to draw from.

The coach should be fired. He/she is most certainly an asshole who does not deserve to be coaching any high school children. No decent person would ever let their team pull off such a pathetic display.
The coach should be REQUIRED to assist coaching a team like the one he beat. Sort of like making litterers walk on the side of the road with an orange suit, pointy stick and a bag

WTH are fence lizards, anyway? Don't know about the ones in the article, but if the fireants by me are anything like them, I hate to think what would happen if they were any larger.
(Tip for the other lizards: don't wanna use poison to get rid of the little bastards? Wait till night, when they're all inside the mound, and then pour a couple gallons of boiling water right on the mound. Kills 'em dead. Your lawn, too.)

Eh, it's not random, necessarily. In this case, longer legged, more skittish lizards aren't getting eaten as frequently as their slower, more stubby-legged bretheren, and so they can survive to reproduce. Just a guess.

A Swedish research scientist has discovered that the current generation of pedigree dogs, normally social and curious creatures by nature, are disinterested, shy and less responsive to commands than their ancestors. The study found show-quality and "handbag'' pooches were the most likely to lack the instincts of previous generations, which were bred for their strength, hunting and working abilities, rather than their looks.

One time (and one time only), I had a can of really really old Unique rifle/pistol powder. I ran a metal broomhandle down into a large mound; it was very deep. Toads. I knew we were doing something right when I noticed all these freakin' toads all over the place. Sign of a healthy yard and garden.
The toads live in the water meter boxes.
The tree frogs loved it when I boarded the windows. I guess they're "homeless" now.

I had just built a nice deck at the old house. The porch light attracted hordes of June bugs, and the toads lived under the deck.
As I was enjoying a beer, a particularly large toad crawled into the light and snared a couple of June bugs. I started knocking 'em down and tossing them in tongue range; hence the count.

For the runic symbol, arms at 10 and 2. Like a capital "Y" with a vertical bar running up its entire length. As for the "peace" sign, I have never figured out exactly where it came from, in that sense. I first saw it used in that context in the "Summer of Love", 1968, along with the "two-finger" peace sign, which is of course the traditional "V-for-Victory" to those of us who grew up with World War Two in our backgrounds. ( I was born in 1958, and most of the men in my family had been there- and they didn't "shovel s**t in Louisiana", if you take my meaning.) One of my uncles, ex-Patton's 3rd Army, didn't appreciate the "peaceniks" hijacking the "V". He was also the one who told me what the SS did with the later-to-be "peace" sign.

As I was enjoying a beer, a particularly large toad crawled into the light and snared a couple of June bugs. I started knocking 'em down and tossing them in tongue range; hence the count.

The peace symbol, the chicken foot in a circle, not the V for victory hand sign.
Part of the reason the peaceniks co-opted the V for victory hand sign is the meaning it can have for Brits when reversed, it is their middle finger salute.

Nothing, that I know of. It was Sir Winston Churchill who popularized it. My guess is, flashing a "V" in occupied Europe probably was a virtual guarantee of Excedrin Headache Number Seven Point Six Five from the Gestapo. (They used .32 pocket autos, never mind the movies showing them all with Lugers.)
It's unfortunate that most World War Two movies are "historical documents" in the same sense that the Minutes of the House and Senate accurately portrays what's actually said on the floors of the House and Senate.
/A speech can be "read into" the Minutes without actually being delivered on the Floor of either chamber.

I don't see this at all with the sports teams as the school I teach at, they take the game seriously--startlingly so, to me, I'm not a sportsie--and really push the kids to succeed.
I would so never have gone out for a team in high school, but seeing these kids put themselves into it, I wonder if I may encourage my kids to give it a try.
My middle-school students used to play kickball for no points--their favorite thing--and it worked for them, it allowed them to be the star of their own show but still all play together--but they never pulled punches for each other.

Regional weather does not always follow the world trend. Parts of the US had a brutal 2008 winter, but world temperatures were only down slightly and still in the top 10 warmest since 1880.

That NASA page you linked to is utterly blatant in the bias, as shown by that global temperature picture crap. Did you even bother to read the caption? "2008 Surface Temperature Anomaly (C)" literally screams the bias. Assume there is an ideal and normal temperature and then any deviation is an anomaly. HORSE SHIT!
You said conspiracy, I didn't. The data being gathered is incomplete and an approximation. But if there is a conspiracy, it ain't on the side of the AGW/ACC deniers.

OK, I won't try and fight a denier. Most I've met, accept the data, just dispute that it's man's influence.

You are so totally clueless. I don't dispute what you think I am disputing. But go on believing what you want since NOTHING I say will mean anything to you. You have already pigeonholed me.

PELOSI: Well, the family planning services reduce cost. They reduce cost. The states are in terrible fiscal budget crises now and part of what we do for children's health, education and some of those elements are to help the states meet their financial needs. One of those - one of the initiatives you mentioned, the contraception, will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government.
Get some balls that you claim to have you cow. You are talking abortion. OK for you to pop out 5 kids because you are an elitist and can tell everyone else how to live their lives. The rationale that increasing funding to one program will lower the costs of another program proves just how stupid that you think we are. Also, it would take no fewer than 5 years to realize reduction in education so let's talk about cutting funding that supports unnecessary services to illegals. You know, the ones working in your hotels.
I'm not supposed to hate because I was raised correctly but this is as close as I get. Seething.
