Sorry to go OT: so quick, but the news is breaking that the Treasury is probably going with the "bad bank" option as early as next week to deal with the banking situation.
Citigroup, Bank of America shares jump late
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) - Shares of big banks including Citigroup Inc. and Bank of America jumped during late trading Tuesday after a report that a government plan to buy toxic assets from the industry may be unveiled next week.
The Obama administration is close to deciding on a plan to purchase non-performing and illiquid assets from banks and the proposal could be announced early next week, CNBC reported late Tuesday, citing unidentified industry sources.
The so-called "bad bank" plan, would address the key problem of how to price the assets by using a model-pricing mechanism, CNBC said.
The model would take into account the government's ability to hold the assets, even to maturity, and pay for them with cheap funding. That could mean the government pays more than current market prices for the securities, CNBC explained.
However, if the government ends up paying less than the value at which the assets are carried on banks' books, the banks would issue common equity to the government, CNBC reported.
The Treasury's Troubled Asset Relief Program has already invested more than $150 billion in banks, but that was done through preferred shares being sold to the government. There's now a growing feeling that preferred equity isn't enough to make the banks healthy, CNBC said.
So far the futures market has jumped way up 1% or so tonight on this news.

Using long, drawn-out processes to put money into circulation to meet an emergency is like mailing a letter to the fire department to tell them that your house is on fire.
If you cut taxes tomorrow, people would have more money in their next paycheck, and it would probably be spent by the time they got that paycheck, through increased credit card purchases beforehand.
If the Beltway politicians aren't really trying to solve this crisis as quickly as they could, what are they trying to do?
One important clue may be a recent statement by President Obama's chief of staff, Rahm Emmanuel, that "A crisis is a terrible thing to waste." What are the Beltway politicians buying with all the hundreds of billions of dollars they are spending? They are buying what politicians are most interested in-- power.
In the name of protecting the taxpayers' investment, they are buying the power to tell General Motors how to make cars, banks how to bank and, before it is all over with, all sorts of other people how to do the work they specialize in, and for which members of Congress have no competence, much less expertise.
This administration and Congress are now in a position to do what Franklin D. Roosevelt did during the Great Depression of the 1930s-- use a crisis of the times to create new institutions that will last for generations.

We were looking for ways, some covert, others overt, that the ''baby boomers could be MORE screwed than they have been all of their lives.
(You might not know just how often a tax credit or other government assist came along JUST AFTER the bulk of the boomers had no need for it....but it happened a lot!)
I think this is the way the government destroys social Security for the boomers without it looking like that's what they did.
Eventually, we will find out that none of us will get what we paid in.
Meanwhile all of us ''smart'' enough to have tried to save lost 50% or more of the value of our savings.

I have actually seen that "CPR technique" before. It was being used by someone who had no idea how to perform CPR on an epileptic who had just collapsed from a seizure, and who did not need CPR. (It ended OK.)
That video could be used as evidence in a malpractice suit against the doctor.

Thank God for bloggers, especially LGF. I hate to see newspapers and other print media go since they are real hard copies of history, but if they can't factually report the history, good riddance. I turned off my tv in 2007, strictly get my news from the internet and daily I am dismayed at the level of non-journalistic integrity everywhere. As we know the entire 2008 campaign will go down as the greatest bloodless media coup of the US Government. Just hope their man doesn't disappoint them. Oops I spoke to soon, polls show a 15% drop already, still over 70%, but hey that was week one. Cheers to my friends.

Palestinian medicine must certainly be the best in the world, even better than in Israel. I've seen dead Palestinians revive from stretchers and run off, old women that have survived teh destruction of dozens of houses, and badly wounded Palestinian fighters heal in moments, as if by magic.
Such are the wonder of Pallywood. This is the Holy land after all, so the locals have plenty of experience in such miraculous matters.
