Ledeen: We’ve Already Done That

World • Views: 1,675

Michael Ledeen is spot on: But, but … We’ve DONE All That.

There are two “stories” about Iran/U.S. relations bubbling around. One has to do with direct talks, the other with Ahmadinejad’s demand that we apologize for our many past sins.

I know this is spitting into the wind, but neither is news. There have been talks between Washington and Tehran ever since 1979 (the Revolution). EVERY president has authorized them. On the public record, there were nearly thirty such talks during the Bush years, and there are “private” channels as well. So there is nothing new in this, it is business-as-usual.

Iranian leaders have constantly demanded that we apologize, and we have. Clinton did it. Albright did it. And then, having obtained his ounce of humiliated flesh, Khamenei told them both to go to hell.

Any story about talks with Iran or apologizing to Iran should contain those historical facts. Otherwise, you can just do what most of the journalists do: Pretend the world was created fresh just before you woke up, so all that matters is how you feel about it all.

What's the definition of insanity again? Attempting the same thing over and over again while expecting a different result?

It's not the clinical definition, but it is a good working definition.

This reminds me of Sheryl Crow, whose plan for world peace was not to have enemies.

As if this was one of the choices on the menu.

It is like talking to 3-yr-olds. "Why don't we just talk to them?"

Um, because we've been talking for 1400 years, we know what they want, we know exactly how much they'll bargain, we know what works with them, and what doesn't. And we're working forward from that knowledge. You want to ignore past experience because you feel like those answers have to be wrong.

47 Shr_Nfr  Thu, Jan 29, 2009 10:55:54am

It shows the complete lack of comprehension as to the nature of the culture in the area, both on the part of the public and on the part of our government. "Face" and "Honor" are pivotal in some societies. To get your opponent to "apologize" is to make them admit defeat in their eyes. Such a society only respects one thing, and that one thing is raw force. But don't tell the senile "flower generation", they have made up their minds, such as they have them, a long time ago. Ignorance on a topic is frequent, you can rectify that by learning. Stupidity on a topic is unforgivable, it means that you have refused to learn.

48 nyc redneck  Thu, Jan 29, 2009 10:55:55am

Talking to 3 year olds sums it up. I am convinced that liberals are victims of arrested cognitive development at the 3 to 5 year old stage.
Physically of course, they're mature and can use big words but their concepts are right in line with a child's. And that's also why it doesn't do any good talking to them...they'll just have a tantrum if you contradict them.

True, but even a Marxist doesn't want to have the place where they live destroyed by others. He may believe that the government should control everything because that's what he was brought up believing, but talking with Iran shows more of a hippie peace-love mentality than anything else. I really think that he believes that as long as we are nice to Iran, etc.. that they will leave us alone and we will live in peace (blame America first). Unfortunately I think most LGF readers understand the ideology that drives countries like Iran better than most of the people in Washington.

Students Forced to Pledge Allegiance to the Obamessiah…

All hail our dark overlord and master:

Pledge of Allegiance Becomes Pledge to Obama

By Alan Gray, NewsBlaze

A parent in the Clark County School District of Las Vegas, Henderson area reported today that his son, who is in 1st grade, came home yesterday saying that he didn’t want to go back to school anymore.

When asked why, the boy said that during the Pledge of Allegiance the teacher put up a large image of Obama next to the flag.

Thinking that the boy might be exaggerating, the man asked his son if he was sure, and suggested that by “large” he might mean an 8×10 photo of the president. The boy apparently said “No, it is a large picture of Obama and when we are done, the teacher turns off the image.”

The same thing was not done for President Bush last year.

After investigating this morning, the other parent reported that what the boy said was true.

At least three of the five classrooms have an overhead projector and as the children stand to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, the teacher turns on the classroom overhead and a full body image of Obama, with six U.S. flags behind him, comes up about 4 feet away from the flag that hangs on the wall. The screen is apparently around five feet by six feet.

In the image, President Obama appears to be staring straight out with no facial expression, just a serious look. All of the kids in each class faced the President, instead of the flag that hangs in the corner.

Local parents are up in arms over this situation. Teachers clearly do not realize the gravity of what they are doing.

Play up which particular aspect?

I'm hoping that, for all the possible downsides of an Obama presidency, that one possible upside is a turning of the popular opinion in Iran against Ahmadinejad. My understanding of what many young people in Iran think -- and I'll acknowledge that's a shaky understanding -- is that they like Obama. And so when Ahmadinejad keeps up his angry antics, it'll spell political doom for him.

But then again, I'd have thought the pinch of international political and financial pain would have done the same. So who knows.

re: #38 subsailor68
Hey, I feel for you, I do. You put up a link titled:
Citing Obama Opposition, McDowell Warns Against Fairness Doctrine
and the story you linked to is how McDowell - a member of the FCC commission says NO to the Fairness Doctrine and that Obama agrees with NO to the Fairness Doctrine.

In the speech, McDowell cited candidate Barack Obama's statement to B&C--through an aide--that he did not support the doctrine, adding that the new administration has a terrific opportunity to enunciate its strong opposition to anything resembling the fairness doctrine.
He spoke at length about the doctrine's origins and its use by both Democrats and Republicans against their opponents. He said he did not know whether recent calls for its return would bear fruit, felt it was a good time to talk to his audience--of media executives, lobbyists, journalists and others--about its creation, its historical abuses, and the legal difficulties involved with restoring it and trying to enforce it.
McDowell warned that if the doctrine were revived, it might not "wear the same label. That's just Marketing 101: if your brand is controversial, make a new brand," he told his audience.
He suggested the doctrine could be woven into the fabric of policy initiatives with names like localism, diversity or network neutrality. "According to some, the premise of any of these initiatives is similar to the philosophical underpinnings of the Doctrine: the government must keep electronic conduits of information viewpoint neutral," he said.
McDowell suggested that a stealth version of the doctrine may already be teed up at the FCC in the form of community advisory boards to help determine local programming. McDowell says he is fine with those boards if they are voluntary--some stations already seek such input. But that if they are required, as the FCC has proposed, "Would not such a policy be akin to re-imposition of the Doctrine, albeit under a different name and sales pitch?"
McDowell also said that efforts to reimpose the doctrine could stretch to cable, satellite, and even the Internet. "Certain legal commentators have suggested that a new corollary of the Doctrine should be fashioned for the Internet, on the theory that web surfers should be exposed to topics and views that they have not chosen for themselves," adding: "I am not making this up."
In a move obviously calculated to strike fear into the hearts of regulatory-minded Democrats, the same ones who have meen making noises about liking the fairness doctrine when it comes to reining in talk radio critics, McDowell had this:
"Actually, in a string of media cases stretching back over more than 20 years, various judges on the D.C. Circuit - both Democratic and Republican appointees - have suggested that it is time for the Supreme Court to rethink the concept of spectrum scarcity as a justification for limiting broadcasters' First Amendment rights. A revived Doctrine would provide a big, bright bulls-eye for those who wish to make that happen. That development would have implications far beyond the Doctrine itself. Much of our content regulation of broadcasters - including most of the FCC's existing localism rules and the regulations requiring three hours a week of children's programming - rest on the spectrum scarcity rationale. If that rationale is invalidated, serious legal challenges to all those other content rules may follow."
McDowell said he was hopeful that the Obama administration understood all this.

Sorry some folks didn't bother to read your link, it was a good one.

Just go after the words I actually write, instead of inventing them. It's more fun that way.

We do. . .their lack of substance makes them niiice and juicy to pick apart and disagree with. . .which pisses you off and makes you whime "I did not say/mean/post that. . .go look at what I DID say. . .snivel you guys suck"

What irks me and maybe others is is the remorse of the time wasted reading what you actually wrote, and then you saying that what you wrote was not what you meant. . .when asked what you meant then, you say you did not say it. . .repeat. . .

Cog, here is something I will not deny posting and meaning- you are as vapid and as intellectually shallow as they come, and all of your pontificating and sniping and snark will not ever add an inch to the shallows of your mind and your integrity. . .

My Bipartisan Stimulus
By RUSH LIMBAUGH

Fifty-three percent of American voters voted for Barack Obama; 46% voted for John McCain, and 1% voted for wackos. Give that 1% to President Obama. Let's say the vote was 54% to 46%. As a way to bring the country together and at the same time determine the most effective way to deal with recessions, under the Obama-Limbaugh Stimulus Plan of 2009: 54% of the $900 billion -- $486 billion -- will be spent on infrastructure and pork as defined by Mr. Obama and the Democrats; 46% -- $414 billion -- will be directed toward tax cuts, as determined by me.

Posted this late last night...worth reading.

OT: Help Request

I recently posted the Paradise is Coming essay on another board, and got this as a response:

I'm not sure I agree with his logic. But "Wall Street Journal 1-26-2009" with no link is hardly a detailed source. Did he pull that from the Opinion page? Not a clue.

However- let's look at that last paragraph, especially this part:
-fueled partially if not totally by reckless government policies of intervention in the economy-

This, I take issue with. You know the reason the banks collapsed? No, it wasn't because they were giving sub-prime mortgages to people who couldn't really afford them. That was only a part of it.

The bigger reason the credit crunch happened was due to Credit Default Swaps- derivative funds which are essentially selling bets that a mish-mash of mixed up sub-prime mortgages won't default. When the mortgages did, the banks had to pay up on these debts.

Now- Credit Derivative Swaps used to be illegal... until the government deregulated the banking industry.

What got us into this mess wasn't too much government regulation. It was pulling off the brakes and having far too little.

If you can offer any help with formulating a reply, I'd be grateful.

I don't know why but, the FD scares me more than CBBHO talking to ShortShit, more than the massive transfer of wealth going on right now.

It's the infantilization of America, a belief that we don't know what's good for us, that we need to have our hands held, that we need to be educated according to the standards of a bunch of fucking Fascist/Commie bastards.

I am trembling with rage. Might be a good time to step back from the computer.

I fully agree with the rage over trying to impose the Fairness Doctrine. I do think that it, or trying to overturn the 2nd Amendment, should be a tipping point where we all say Enough!.

That having been said, I think the true impetus for the commie fascist libs imposing the FD is the fact that they are frustrated and upset by the fact that even after 30+ years of almost total domination of the culture (media, courts and education) there still are around 50% of us who haven't bought into their shit.
I think that drives them nuts and they will do everything in their power to bring about the squelching of dissenting thoughts or opinions. And of course it will be for the children.......*spit*

FD or 2nd Amendment - we need to get ready to pick the ground we take a stand on..........

The original story comes from Newsblaze, with appears to be a joint community newsblog / newsplog.
They appear to pick a lot of stories off the PR newswires (various) and republish a lot of content, with a notable preponderance of stories from the subcontinent. I"m with you: second or third source and specifics needed.

re: #427 avanti

The letter which Obama's team is drafting to send to Iran includes a promise to Iran that the US is not seeking to overthrow the regime, but merely to change their behavior. My comments were in reference to more than just this TV interview, although they should be taken together.

You are aware Iran is not part of the Arab world, right? The Arabs do not like the Iranians while the Iranians are rather contemptuous of the Arabs. The Arabs have long suffered under Iranian meddling and imperialism and do not wish to be subject to it again. Syria (along with Hezbollah & Hamas) are Iran's only allies in the Arab world, and they are increasingly isolated among their Arab brothers.

By appearing to be very conciliatory, even apologetic to the Iranian regime, Obama is sending the wrong signal to the Arab countries which fear a nuclear armed Iran. There are already worries that the Arab countries will respond to a nuclear Iran by developing their own nuclear weapons. Egypt, Jordan & Saudi Arabia have all hinted at this. Obama's comments only serve to heighten Arab anxiety about Iran, not lessen it.

re: #242 gmsc

The bigger reason the credit crunch happened was due to Credit Default Swaps- derivative funds which are essentially selling bets that a mish-mash of mixed up sub-prime mortgages won't default. When the mortgages did, the banks had to pay up on these debts.

Now- Credit Derivative Swaps used to be illegal... until the government deregulated the banking industry.

My short answer; the swaps themselves were not the problem. The toxic mortgage paper mixed in with them was the problem. And that condition existed because of government-pushed subprime lending, and the implicit "greater fool" guarantee represented by the quasi-"government backstop" of Freddie and Fannie. So, yes, government meddling in the market was the root cause.

OT: Help Request

I recently posted the Paradise is Coming essay on another board, and got this as a response:

If you can offer any help with formulating a reply, I'd be grateful.

Well, as I understand it, he's not completely off-base, just a little simplistic. For example, after saying that sub-prime mortgages were only part of the problem, he goes on to place the majority of the blame on CDS's.

It's my understanding that the genesis of the housing crisis were sub-prime and interest only Variable Interest loans (you know, the folks who over-bought). These were then packaged into Mortgage Backed Securities (combined good and toxic loans), and sold as investments. The Credit Default Swaps were "insurance" packages sold to protect the MBS's.

When the loans started to go bad, the whole house of cards collapsed, as the loans defaulted, the MBS's that included those loans started to lose value, and the CDS's designed as "insurance" were underfunded.

So, it seems to me that it was a whole host of unfortunate things happening one after another.

Of course, the original toxic loans were dictated to banks, etc. by the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977 (Carter), given teeth in the mid-90's (Clinton), and let fester by inaction on the part of the Congress (think Democrats) in the early 2000's, despite concern on the part of others (think Republican's and President Bush).

But then, I'm no expert.

("it's such a lovely idea in theory, it just hasn't always worked out in practice..."

ARGH!

Unlike most here, I did not go through a leftist phase in my youth. Always an ardent capitalist.

However I DID think at one point that communism was "good in theory" (we'll all love and share and be fair) and that it only didn't work in practice because humans are always flawed. But I have come to realize I was wrong. Communism is evil in theory too. It is NOT about sharing. Sharing is what we have in capitalism, when people are free to share without outside coercion.

Communism isn't "sharing" because it isn't voluntary. It is theft. It is slavery.

re: #101 Cognito

Play up which particular aspect?

I'm hoping that, for all the possible downsides of an Obama presidency, that one possible upside is a turning of the popular opinion in Iran against Ahmadinejad. My understanding of what many young people in Iran think -- and I'll acknowledge that's a shaky understanding -- is that they like Obama. And so when Ahmadinejad keeps up his angry antics, it'll spell political doom for him.

But then again, I'd have thought the pinch of international political and financial pain would have done the same. So who knows.

The majority of Iranians do not like Islamic regime or the mullah's puppet Ahmadinejad. In the next fixed election, the mullahs will shuffle their puppets and put up a "moderate" who will proceed to entertain Obama's over-vaunting ego. Meanwhile, their nuclear program will roll on.

Obama's conciliatory words to the Iranian regime will come as a hard blow to true pro-democracy Iranians.

The current Islamic gov't of Turkey has been carefully re-adjusting their pro-western foreign policy. Turkey will sit back and watch what happens. If Obama screws up, Turkey will be there to fill the void. They know Iran is their greatest regional rival, as they were for centuries of war between the Ottoman & Safavid Empires.

Turkey is also concerned about Obama's pledge for rapid withdrawal from Iraq. If things there go south, the Kurds will likely secede and declare independence. That will not go over well in Ankara. We could be looking at a regional war in an abandoned Iraq fought between Turkey, the Arab states of Jordan, Egypt, Kuwait & Saudi Arabia and Iran & Syria.

That's how bad Obama could screw up.

I never needed an epiphany either. My parents and I were refugees from the Communists. You sum up the differences between communism and capitalism well.
Essentially for me, Capitalism works because it takes human nature - and man's inherent self-interest as one of it's driving forces - into account and harnesses it.
Communism takes another trait - envy and covetousness - and uses it as it's driving force. From the barrel of a gun.

Just another way of saying what you said.

re: #38 subsailor68

I have to go now. This is a juggernaut, a coup d'etat

"This is the case, there is no other case, this is the case." Freedom of Speech is freedom. We need a war chest, and warriors.

Shit.

When's the conference, the muster, the getting angry and seriously worried enough to prepare for the fight? We have to fight this battle, before any hope can obtain for the future

re: #322 DisturbedEma

From memory:

"So be sweet and kind to mother,
sit down have a chat,
buy her flowers and some candy or a brand new hat,
but maybe you'd better let it go at that!
Or you might wind up like Oedipus (I'd rather marry a duck billed platypus) than wind up like Oedipus Rex!"

Thank you. I'll be here all the week

Link?
Link, letters, we have to raise holy hell about this. It is beyond imagination, they're setting this Prom King up to be Big Brother. F&*ck this shit, this is freakish and wrong and anti-American.

re: #317 avanti

Now you have a cover up scandal to exploit. Just prove the British paper was correct and the White House lied.

No, that's a little too much like the Democrats way of behaving. Obviously, the Obama administration is preparing their policy & approach to dealing with Iran. Some word of it leaked out to the media. Somebody wrote what he thought that was all about, stirring in other "expert" opinions and hunches borrowed over a pint at the pub. That's the way journalists work. So while I don't take the report as gospel, there is certainly some truth to it. We shall have to wait & see exactly what Obama does do.

re: #326 Joan

When can we seriously start making the Obama Hitler comparisons. I am just asking.

re: #213 avanti

The author of that op-ed piece, Does Barack Obama have Iran's number? does have some interesting speculations about Obama's foreign policy, but he is mistaken about the political realities in Iran. He imagines Khatami is a legitimate reformer, who if he is elected, might shift the policies or behavior of the Islamic Republic. That is false. The Iranian presidency is of limited power. All the real power is in the Council of Guardians, especially in the senior mullah, the Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamene'i. The president of the day is chosen to suit the strategy of the mullahs. They have calculated that Obama will be better manipulated by a so-called reformer.

It is the Iranians who have Obama's number.

We told Ahmadinejad he looks like an idiot walking around with his top button buttoned but no tie. He didn't listen to us.

Why would we expect him to listen to us about anything else?

re: #318 BatGuano

It has been decades since I read that--the title is always with me, it is one of the great titles, isn't it; was it Harry Turtledove? Who? (thanks)

re: #329 BatGuano

well, bat--it is a free country. IMO, that particular comparison is worse than useless. Ridicule, less--alarm, inevitable; Hitler--useless. Feels good, but useless.

Besides, the Prom King's a warbler, not a warrior. I liked a post earlier this week, someone envisioned B.O. dithering around the beach at Normandy, shrieking, "Arrest that man! Arrest that man!" each time a shot was fired

;)

Also forgot to mention the fact that Obama's naive gestures will go down in Tehran as a sign of defeat not good will. Obamble is going to kill us all
