FBI Cuts Off CAIR Over Hamas Connections

US News • Views: 6,552

At long last, the FBI has finally cut off contacts with the Hamas-linked Council on American Islamic Relations. Since LGF has been targeted by CAIR in “hate speech” complaints to the FBI, this is very welcome news.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has cut off contacts with the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) amid mounting concern about the Muslim advocacy group’s roots in a Hamas-support network, the Investigative Project on Terrorism has learned.

The decision to end contacts with CAIR was made quietly last summer as federal prosecutors prepared for a second trial of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF), an Islamic charity accused of providing money and political support to the terrorist group Hamas, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

CAIR and its chairman emeritus, Omar Ahmad, were named un-indicted co-conspirators in the HLF case. Both Ahmad and CAIR’s current national executive director, Nihad Awad, were revealed on government wiretaps as having been active participants in early Hamas-related organizational meetings in the United States. During testimony, FBI agent Lara Burns described CAIR as a front organization.

Hamas is a US-designated foreign terrorist organization, and it’s been illegal since 1995 to provide support to it within the United States.

The decision to end contacts with CAIR is a significant policy change for the FBI. For years, the FBI worked with the national organization and its state chapters to address Muslim community concerns about the potential for hate crimes and other civil liberty violations in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

But critics said the FBI improperly conferred legitimacy on CAIR by meeting with its officials, even as its own investigative files contained evidence of CAIR leaders’ ties to Hamas.

Last autumn, FBI field offices began notifying state CAIR chapters that bureau officials could no longer meet with them until CAIR’s national leadership in Washington had addressed issues raised by the HLF trial, according to people with knowledge of the notifications.

CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper declined to comment Wednesday when the IPT called for comment. Before hanging up, Hooper said “We’re more than happy to cooperate with legitimate media. But we don’t cooperate with those who promote anti-Muslim bigotry.”

OT: BO seeks delay in case of USS Cole bombing mastermind:

A military judge in Guantanamo Bay has denied the Obama administration's request to delay proceedings for 120 days in the case of a detainee accused of planning the October 2000 attack on the USS Cole warship, an al-Qaeda strike that killed 17 service members and injured 50 others.

The decision throws into some disarray the administration's plan to buy time as it reviews individual detainee cases as part of its plan to close the U.S. military prison at the Guantanamo naval base in Cuba. The Pentagon may now be forced to withdraw the charges against Abd al Rahim al-Nashiri, a Saudi citizen of Yemeni descent.

So, Mr. President, a team of NCIS agents sifting through the mincemeat of what was once 17 of their shipmates and then sweating for over a year to track this scumbag through the hellholes of Yemen while all the while carefully documenting everything so that his "rights" are protected at a trial that he no more deserves than does a rabid dog is not good enough for you. You need your hand-picked team of political hacks to pick apart and second guess the work of these professional investigators- while the scum they caught is allowed to escape the justice he deserves.

*SPIT*

This will not endear BO as commander-in-chief to any of the military, especially the United States Navy.

Super Bowl, commercial-free, at Islamic Center

Some 250 teenage boys will pile onto the carpet of the Islamic Center of Passaic County on Sunday to catch the Super Bowl on a big screen. But when the much-buzzed-about commercials come on, they won't be watching. A youth leader manning the projector slaps a piece of paper over the lens, blocking out images the center considers inappropriate, such as beers and bikinis.

"The purpose is to keep them away from bad influences," said Emad Hamdeh, the youth committee director. "The beer commercials show people happy while drinking; that's not reality."

During the self-imposed blackouts, the boy fans don't heckle in protest, said Hamdeh. He uses the breaks to talk about the purpose of life. As in "entertainment is OK, but shouldn't be the purpose of life," he said.

Um, that's an illegal infringement of copyright laws.

Posted 1/26/2009 3:39:00 PM

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 1/26/2009) - CAIR today asked American Muslims and other people who seek peace with justice in the Middle East to thank CBS for last night’s “60 Minutes” program that outlined in detail the injustices suffered by the Palestinian people at the hands of the Israelis.

The 13-minute report by journalist Bob Simon showed the damage to the cause of peace caused by the ever-expanding and illegal Israeli settlements, the evictions of Palestinians from their homes, the humiliation they experience at Israeli checkpoints, the “Apartheid” roads and wall built by Israel, and the bizarre experience of Palestinian families imprisoned in their own homes by Israeli soldiers.

Some wiseguy should switch the channel over at halftime, to the Lingerie Bowl.

I assume everyone has seen the reports about PETA's commercial being rejected for the Superbowl. The ridiculous thing about it is that NBC, who is showing the Superbowl and rejected the ad, is showing it over and over again on every pseudo-news program they have. I smell collusion.

"The purpose is to keep them away from bad influences," said Emad Hamdeh, the youth committee director. "The beer commercials show people happy while drinking; that's not reality."

Yeah, they'd rather use the time to show the boys good influences, like how to strap on bombs and blow up happy people while drinking.........

I have a vision, and I know
The heathen shall return.
"They shall not come with warships,
They shall not waste with brands,
But books be all their eating,
And ink be on their hands.

"Not with the humour of hunters
Or savage skill in war,
But ordering all things with dead words,
Strings shall they make of beasts and birds,
And wheels of wind and star.

"They shall come mild as monkish clerks,
With many a scroll and pen;
And backward shall ye turn and gaze,
Desiring one of Alfred's days,
When pagans still were men.
"The dear sun dwarfed of dreadful suns,
Like fiercer flowers on stalk,
Earth lost and little like a pea
In high heaven's towering forestry,
—These be the small weeds ye shall see
Crawl, covering the chalk.
"But though they bridge St. Mary's sea,
Or steal St. Michael's wing—
Though they rear marvels over us,
Greater than great Vergilius
Wrought for the Roman king;
By this sign you shall know them,
The breaking of the sword,
And man no more a free knight,
That loves or hates his lord.
"Yea, this shall be the sign of them,
The sign of the dying fire;
And Man made like a half-wit,
That knows not of his sire.
"What though they come with scroll and pen,
And grave as a shaven clerk,
By this sign you shall know them,
That they ruin and make dark"
"By all men bond to Nothing,
Being slaves without a lord,
By one blind idiot world obeyed,
Too blind to be abhorred"
"By God and man dishonoured,
By death and life made vain,
Know ye the old barbarian,
The barbarian come again—

Bob Simon - kapo.

Simon has deep psychological problems with being a Jew. He blames that his being Jewish almost got him killed in the first Gulf War when he was kidnapped:

During his interrogations, Simon lied and told the Iraqis that he lived in New York and wasn't Jewish. A month into his captivity, he was confronted by a man who said the Iraqis knew who he was, that he was Jewish and lived in Israel, and that he was working for the Mossad, the Israeli intelligence agency. (He wasn't.) He was told his trial would begin in two days.

"I knew it would be a short trial, and I knew what the result would be," he said. "I knew they were going to execute me."

But hardly well, for Simon and crew were soon shifted to an intelligence center in downtown Baghdad. "Here the guards were animals—all they did was shout and beat," he says. One day an officer "grabbed me by the face, forced my mouth open and said, 'Yehudi, Yehudi,' which means 'Jew.' Then he spit at me and slapped me. I feared for my life, but I would have killed him if I could, with no more remorse than killing a cockroach."

Bob Simon on why Muslims would not kill Danny Pearl:

BOB SIMON, CBS "60 MINUTES II" CORRESPONDENT: In fact, I think there's reason to hope he's alive, and here's why I think that. The people who organized his capture and who have been sending these emails are obviously people who are capable, in a certain way, of thinking straight. They're capable of thinking strategically.

They've got Pearl. They've had him for several days now. It would make absolutely no sense from their point of view to kill him. It would only discredit their cause entirely. They have a list of demands. These demands indicate that these are people who believe they have a mission. It would be totally counterproductive, from their point, of view to kill him.

Good question.

I can only guess that these tribunal judges do not fall under executive branch authority, they are under judicial branch. This makes sense, in a large way, since the judge should be separate from law enforcement.

I agree with the judge. The one semi-valid point, IMO, that has been raised regarding Guantanamo is the slowness in getting a day in court. Delaying that day in court now is wrong.

Jimmy Carter's Freedom Fighters:

Hamas accused of torture death of Gaza critic

Osama Atallah, a teacher, was a supporter of the Fatah movement of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the sworn enemy of Hamas, whose gunmen drove Fatah militia out of Gaza in 2007 and fought Israel's army in a three-week war this month.

His brother Bassam said on Thursday masked gunmen in two jeeps had arrived at the family home in the city of Gaza on Tuesday. They identified themselves as members of Hamas internal security and they arrested his brother Osama.

Bassam said the Hamas security service told the Atallah family Osama would be released in a matter of hours. But a Hamas government official, who is also a member of the Atallah family, later denied the teacher was in custody.

Susan Crawford, the Pentagon official who approves charges and refers cases to trial, can withdraw charges, an action that would halt proceedings without reference to the judge. It would also allow the government to reinstate charges either in a military commission in Guantanamo or in federal court or military court if it decides to abolish the exiting system of prosecuting detainees.

Yes. He believes Muslim terrorists are rational actors that can can be appeased if given the proper attention to what they perceive as their just grievances.

" They're capable of thinking strategically" . Right. We just saw that with Hamas. Earlier we saw that with Hizb'allah. These terrorists are willing to kill 1000's of their own people for the sake of killing a few Jews.

Simon obviously believes Iran would not use the Bomb on Israel once it gets one because they too are rational actors.

Planting bombs in Ice cream parlors to kill Jewish toddlers doesn't seem to faze Simon belief in the Western model of the rational actor theory.

Newt: ‘Return to first principles’

Rather than doling out billions of dollars of taxpayers’ money to failed businesses, which is likely to slow the economy and inhibit recovery, he said, Gingrich suggested the new administration should direct its attention and money to those who actually create most of the jobs in the U.S., small business people, the self-employed and entrepreneurs.

...

Asked by an audience member whether he intended to run for public office again, Gingrich at first said, “I don’t know,” but later allowed that he might be willing to try to create a second “Contract with America.”

Gingrich’s first “Contract with America” led the Republican Party to victory in 1994 by capturing the majority in the U.S. House for the first time in 40 years.

Go Newt!

So, Obama is now complaining "outraged" about the bonus checks distributed by the financial services sector despite being recipients of the bailout.

Maybe he needs a refresher on what those bonuses represent; a stimulus package for the NYC metro area economy. Consider that for 2008, bonuses were down by the largest amount in 30 years. It was a huge hit to the coffers of NYC and NYS (and significant hits to CT and NJ). It meant the loss of $1 billion in state tax revenue and hundreds of millions in lost city revenue.

That money has to be made up somewhere.

Now, imagine if the bonuses weren't distributed at all... we'd be talking a huge hit to the state and city economy.

Once again, it's validation of the trickle down economic theory - proof positive that spending money by the rich has measurable benefits for everyone.

Note also that the City and State are looking at raising taxes and fees on everyone to close their budget holes - holes that would have otherwise been filled had Wall Street simply held it together this past year.

"Craig certainly never lobbies his father, and takes pains to make that crystal clear. NPCA has been laying the groundwork for years about the NPS maintenance backlog which [the Government Accountability Office] says is over $8.5 billion, and the House leaders have historically been very supportive of the national parks. I believe the legislation enacted in 2006 regarding the establishment of military tribunals done in response to the Hamden SCOTUS rulings did create the formal rules around the tribunals. I also believe that you are correct, once this was enacted as law via Legislative and Executive Branch actions, the President cannot use an executive order to invalidate the law. The only way the law can be repealed under the Constitution is to pass and sign a new law that invalidates the first law.

Otherwise, the President can just provide an executive order invalidating any law he doesn't want to follow.

However, the United States may not appeal an order or ruling that is, or amounts to, a finding of not guilty with respect to the charge or specification.
(2) An appeal of an order or ruling may not be taken unless the trial counsel provides the military judge with written notice of appeal from the order or ruling within 72 hours of the order or ruling. Such notice shall include a certification by the
(b) An appeal under this section shall be forwarded by means prescribed under regulations of the President directly to the Court of Military Review and shall, whenever practicable, have priority over all other proceedings before that court. In ruling on an appeal under this section, the Court of Military review may act only with respect to matters of law, notwithstanding section 866(c) of this title (article 66(c)).
(c) Any period of delay resulting from an appeal under this section shall be excluded in deciding any issue regarding denial of a speedy trial unless an appropriate authority determines that the appeal was filed solely for the purpose of delay with the knowledge that it was totally frivolous and without merit.

That's the only legal way they can force a halt to the proceedings.

The military chain of command does not have the legal authority to tell a military judge how to proceed in his own courtroom.

Military judges, other JAG officers, chaplains, inspectors general, and medical officers have considerable leeway and independence in the course of their duties. Yes, they are subject to the orders of their superiors, but not with regard to how they handle individual cases.

305 lawhawk  Thu, Jan 29, 2009 12:40:27pm

Blood boiling time:

Conservative Catholic priest Floriano Abrahamowicz said Thursday that "the only thing certain" about the gas chambers "was that they were used for disinfection."

Abrahamowicz, of Treviso in northern Italy, was quoted by the Tribuna di Treviso on Thursday in a report that received worldwide coverage due to the pope's recent rehabilitation of a bishop who denied the Holocaust, sparking a battle between the Vatican and the Chief Rabbinate of Israel.

Abrahamowicz is a traditionalist like British-born Richard Williamson, whose excommunication was lifted by Pope Benedict on Saturday along with three other bishops after 20 years of exile.

The only certain thing?

The only thing I'm certain of is that Abrahamowicz is a Holocaust denier/minimizer (same difference) who is trying to excuse away the existence of the Holocaust and what happened to the millions of Jews who were murdered at the hands of the Nazis precisely because they were Jewish.

Regarding the military courts. They are part of the judicial system. They are an inferior court created by Congress, appeals of military court system rulings go from the military courts system of appeals directly to the Supreme Court. Constitutionally the Military Court System was created by an Act of Congress and can only be modified by an act of Congress. The Military Court System is not part of the Federal Courts which are a separate inferior Court System also created by Congress. This is High School government class level stuff that President Obama and his team should know. Team Obama will get their heads collectively handed to them over this. And POTUS taught "Constitutional Law"? Where the bleep is the White House staff to keep this twit from making idiotic moves like this? THAT is something so many people here are having a hard time understanding.

You were talking about something else.

This could get real ugly fast if O wants to have an Executive/Judicial showdown.

I'm still trying to find the pertinent section, because I think the article I quoted above covers regular courts martial, not special or miltary tribs. I found this excellent page of military law reference links, you might want to bookmark it for future reference.

Oh, goody! This is by no mean over. LGF, Investigative Project on Terrorism, the Jawas Report, and Pajamas Media still have to expose CAIR for what it really is: a fully legitimate terrorist front to push Islam on America. Step it up!

338 UberInfidel67  Thu, Jan 29, 2009 12:50:32pm

"The Commission is unaware of how conducting an arraignment would preclude any option by the administration," said Pohl in a written opinion, portions of which were read to The Post. "Congress passed the military commissions act, which remains in effect. The Commission is bound by the law as it currently exists, not as it may change in the future."

Nashiri is facing arraignment on Feb. 9, and Pohl said the proceedings would go ahead....

FROM AN ARTICLE I FOUND. Remember, the "O" is really not the head honcho. Even HE is subject to rules. Never let him forget that. This judge sure aint!

Actually, I think that's basically what the judge in question is saying. He said that he was unpersuaded by their arguments.

He can certainly be removed from the case, but having the prosecutor withdraw the charges would be a lot more efficient.

340 FurryOldGuyJeans  Thu, Jan 29, 2009 12:51:38pm

re: #319 Pietr

I think I addressed this from another line also, in my post #250......

[Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...]

The whole thing is that O, through the military chain of command, made legal motions before the military judges to suspend the hearings for 120 days. Nearly all the judges complied, the holdout judge found the legal arguments of the government to suspend the hearings to be unpersuasive and so is now continuing with the hearing he was presiding over.

For O to over-ride this judge will have to kick it up a notch and risk having lots of public attention focused on this matter he can ill afford.

Obama is speaking now -- live. What I find really, really curious is that he keeps referring to "The American people" -- like he's not part of this -- as if "The American people" are some alien bunch he needs to address on occasion...send them "a message".

I think Bush used to refer to "the people". Apparently BHO has to differentiate, being Messiah for the whole world, and all. Naturally, he has to clarify when he's only referring to Americans, specifically.

Found this crazy shit too:Military to Pledge Oath To Obama, Not Constitution
Conservative News and Reporting "News for the Rest of Us" Michele Chang
Secretary of Defense Robert Gates is extremely frustrated with orders that the White House is contemplating. According to sources at the Pentagon, including all branches of the armed forces, the Obama Administration may break with a centuries-old tradition.

A spokesman for General James Cartwright, the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, states that the Obama Administration wants to have soldiers and officers pledge a loyalty oath directly to the office of the President, and no longer to the Constitution.

"The oath to the Constitution is as old as the document itself." the spokesman said, "At no time in American history, not even in the Civil War, did the oath change or the subject of the oath differ. It has always been to the Constitution."

The back-and-forth between the White House and the Defense Department was expected as President George W. Bush left office. President Obama has already signed orders to close Guantanamo and to pull combat troops from Iraq. But, this, say many at the Defense Department, goes to far.

"Technically, we can't talk about it before it becomes official policy." the spokesman continued. "However, the Defense Department, including the Secretary, will not take this laying down. Expect a fight from the bureaucracy and the brass."

Sources at the White House had a different point of view. In a circular distributed by White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, the rationale for the change was made more clear.

"The President feels that the military has been too indoctrinated by the old harbingers of hate: nationalism, racism, and classism. By removing an oath to the American society, the soldiers are less likely to commit atrocities like those at Abu Ghraib."

"We expect a lot of flak over this," the classified memo continues. "But those that would be most against it are those looking either for attention or control."

The time frame for the changes are unknown. However, it is more likely that the changes will be made around the July 4th holiday, in order to dampen any potential backlash. The difference in the oath will actually only be slight. The main differences will be the new phrasing. It is expected that the oath to the Constitution will be entirely phased out within two years.

re: #330 Rexatosis

Okay now back to criticizing Pres. Obama

Opps, I forgot they made the decision and are now just beginning to study it.

Interesting. So this is a textbook separation of powers violation?

I thought Bush was involved in getting this started. Does that mean Bush put in a request that was simply honored (vs. Obama's, which was not)?

What about the talk of the Pentagon dropping the charges?

Realistically, the very idea of a politician interfering with an trial in progress does seem like the sort of thing that we would very definitely have rules against - and that our "Constitutional law professor" should be keenly aware of. We may be heading towards being a Banana Republic, but maybe we still have some remaining legacy from when we weren't.

This whole case actually raises the spectre of one of the arguments the left used to try to stop the military tribunal process in the first place, which is the possibility of undue influence on the proceedings when everyone involved works for the government.

This is exactly why we have military judges and independent JAG officers in the first place, so the chain of command can't just order the result they want from a trial.

Unalloyed jive -- but good for you that you were skeptical and asked for feedback before email-forwarding it hither and yon.

Incidentally, this story reminded me of that tale about Bush supposedly having a temper tantrum and screaming that "the Constitution is just a piece of paper" -- a BS claim invented by lefties about a right-wing President whom they hated. Let all of us who lean starboard be on guard for such foolishness coming from conservative sources -- obviously, we've got loose-screws and dumb-asses on the right, too.
