Officials familiar with the decision say Obama has tapped Power to be senior director for multilateral affairs at the National Security Council, a job that will require close contact and potential travel with Clinton, who is now secretary of state. NSC staffers often accompany the secretary of state on foreign trips.

Who wants to volunteer to be the fly on those walls?

re: #7 MJ

The AP is making this out as a Clinton/Power spat.

The real problem is that Power is a anti-Israel zealot.

See:

Samantha Power and Obama’s Foreign Policy Team

The problem for those who favor a strong US-Israel relationship is that Power seems obsessed with Israel, and in a negative way. Much like the authors of the Baker-Hamilton report, she believes resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is central to solving other problems in the Middle East. And it is clear that her approach to addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict would be for the US to behave in a more “even handed” fashion, which of course means withdrawing US support for Israel, and instead applying more pressure on Israel for concessions.

Commentary Magazine, and in particular Noah Pollack, have done a superb job of investigative reporting regarding Power’s record and views. She is a headliner for Senator Obama — a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and a professor at Harvard. Power has a column carried by TIME and she writes frequently. Indeed, it is her writing that reveals reasons to be concerned. From Commentary:

Power is an advocate of the Walt-Mearsheimer view of the American relationship with Israel. In a recent interview published on the Harvard Kennedy School’s website, Power was asked to explain “long-standing structural and conceptual problems in U.S. foreign policy.” She gave a two-part answer: the first problem, she said, is “the US historic predisposition to go it alone.” A standard reply, of course. The second problem, though, should give us pause:

Another longstanding foreign policy flaw is the degree to which special interests dictate the way in which the “national interest” as a whole is defined and pursued…. America’s important historic relationship with Israel has often led foreign policy decision-makers to defer reflexively to Israeli security assessments, and to replicate Israeli tactics, which, as the war in Lebanon last summer demonstrated, can turn out to be counter-productive.

Is he doing this on purpose to obfuscate his own actions, i.e., he can blame missteps on one or more advisers, and dispatch them once again? Or he can blame his own deliberate radical left actions on staff? Emmanuel will go nuts trying to sort this stuff out.

From your link:

She also hinted that Obama had a different attitude towards The Hague-based International Criminal Court, the world’s first permanent war crimes tribunal.

President Bill Clinton’s administration had signed the ICC treaty, which was never ratified by Congress. Bush later rejected the idea of ever joining the court.

“The International Criminal Court, which has started its first trial this week, looks to become an important and credible instrument for trying to hold accountable the senior leadership responsible for atrocities committed in the Congo, Uganda and Darfur,” Rice said.

That would not just be a disaster for Israel, it would be an even greater disaster for the US Military.

AMERICAN THINKER: Samantha Power and Obama’s Foreign Policy Team

… Power wrote for TIME, titled “Rethinking Iran,” the thrust of which rethinking involves the need to engage diplomatically the mullahs and pretend that the Iranian nuclear program is a figment of the paranoid imagination of the Bush administration. She writes:

The war scare that wasn’t [the recent incident between Iranian speedboats and the U.S. Navy in the Straight of Hormuz] stands as a metaphor for the incoherence of our policy toward Iran: the Bush Administration attempts to gin up international outrage by making a claim of imminent danger, only to be met with international eye rolling when the claim is disproved. Sound familiar? The speedboat episode bore an uncanny resemblance to the Administration’s allegations about the advanced state of Iran’s weapons program-allegations refuted in December by the National Intelligence Estimate.

Well, I hope some reporter eventually asks Obama why, if Powers isn’t good enough to be on his campaign, is she good enough to be in govt.

Apparently someone at the AP did. The Obama camp said it’s because she made reconciliatory gestures toward Clinton, who received them well.

Other gestures went unnoticed.

I am so hoping Hillary kicks her ass verbally and physically

113 ClosetConservative  Thu, Jan 29, 2009 4:35:30pm

The afterglow from the inauguration is fading, and so too is my reservoir of good will for President Barack Obama. It reached high water level during his inaugural speech, in which he pledged to win victory over the terrorist threat as well as issued a warning to those who would blame the world’s ills on the West. Given Obama’s record, it was sophistry at best, but it was sophistry reflecting Platonic concepts of justice.

That’s alllll gone now. Samantha Powers, the stimulus package, his assertion that “there are Israelis” (ie, not all) who want peace in the Middle East, his insistence that we let his BS slide… all that has come to a head. If Rasmussen Reports were to call me right now and ask me if I approved or disapproved of the Obama Administration thus far, I’d have to say disapprove. That wasn’t true a few days ago.

AP notes that Powers will be spending a lot of time working closely with Hillary who she called a “monster” during the campaign.

Officials familiar with the decision say Obama has tapped Power to be senior director for multilateral affairs at the National Security Council, a job that will require close contact and potential travel with Clinton, who is now secretary of state. NSC staffers often accompany the secretary of state on foreign trips.

That oughta be interesting.

This is from ms power. I think we all know what she means by “special interests”.

So …is what she is talking about what Biden meant when he said they would do something that was not popular? …Also, when she talks about money being sent to Israel is she talking about preventing citizens of U.S. from sending money to Israel or the U.S. government sending money to Israel …and what is she talking about Liberal Democracy …Obama Democracy? …this women could be dangerous …

200 Sheepdogess  Thu, Jan 29, 2009 4:58:29pm

From Wikipedia

Regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Power said in 2002, that if she were an advisor to the U.S. President she would recommend investing “billions of dollars, not in servicing Israel’s military, but actually investing in the new state of Palestine, in investing the billions of dollars it would probably take, also, to support what will have to be a mammoth protection force [in Palestine], not of the old Rwanda kind, but a meaningful military presence”, even though this may alienate “a domestic constituency of tremendous political and financial import”.[7]

Guess where the US military is going after they leave Iraq?

“I do not think I will be coming back to Davos after this because you do not let me speak,” the Islamist-rooted prime minister shouted before marching off the stage in front of Peres, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and an elite audience of ministers and international officials at the World Economic Forum.

Erdogan criticised the audience for applauding Peres’s emotional defence of Israel’s war in Gaza, before the moderator, Washington Post journalist David Ignatius, insisted that the debate had gone overtime.

Well, I don’t know so much about Shibboleths in this case, but don’t forget, this Powers character is on-record about just such a thing:

Power made her most problematic statement in 2002, in an interview she gave at Berkeley. The interviewer asked her this question:

Let me give you a thought experiment here, and it is the following: without addressing the Palestine-Israel problem, let’s say you were an advisor to the President of the United States, how would you respond to current events there? Would you advise him to put a structure in place to monitor that situation, at least if one party or another [starts] looking like they might be moving toward genocide?

Power gave an astonishing answer:

What we don’t need is some kind of early warning mechanism there, what we need is a willingness to put something on the line in helping the situation. Putting something on the line might mean alienating a domestic constituency of tremendous political and financial import; it may more crucially mean sacrificing—or investing, I think, more than sacrificing—billions of dollars, not in servicing Israel’s military, but actually investing in the new state of Palestine, in investing the billions of dollars it would probably take, also, to support what will have to be a mammoth protection force, not of the old Rwanda kind, but a meaningful military presence. Because it seems to me at this stage (and this is true of actual genocides as well, and not just major human rights abuses, which were seen there), you have to go in as if you’re serious, you have to put something on the line.

She dresses it up as a “thought experiment,” but the meaning is clear.

The fact remains that if American troops are ever deployed to that particular patch of land it won’t be to oppose Israel or to prop up Islamists.

I presume you’re indulging your deepest fears with that post, and if I had the same fears I’d also post it, so I’m not criticizing you. But there are still bedrock principles in this country that even Obama won’t breach.
U.S. Forces actively fighting against Israel (the logical conclusion to sending them to Gaza) is not going to happen.
Guarding against tendencies is one thing, and we should do it, but inventing shibboleths to oppose is a waste of time and energy.

The other logical conclusion to sending them to Gaza would be the same as the rationale of keeping troops in Bosnia: as “peacekeepers”.
I doubt that would happen, either, but it did cross my mind.

That’s pretty good. Actually I was taught a “new” approach to math which involved first an abacus and then graduated to counting multiples with the use of fingers. A difficult math problem still has my fingers flying about.

This new approach (6th grade, a time and place far, far ago) resulted in my getting my hands literally whacked in other schools for years after.

Hysterial? re: #332 NY Nana

Some advice? Stay away from savage. He is evil. Charles banned him, along with a group of his sockpuppets with very, very good good reason. And Charles deleted every single post he had ever made under any nic. That is how evil savage is. He then started a hate site against Charles, LGF, and a number of us. I would even say that he has some psychiatric issues.

If you haven’t seen his alleged ‘blog’, I am not about to even name it.

You were posting here when he was, I assume…be afraid. Be very afraid!

Hysterical, yes. Evil? Really?

That is one wimpy bus.

Everyone keeps popping back up!

Racer X -

Nobody ever said President “B. Hussein Obama” was in the same league as a REAL Bus Driver, like say Ralph Kramden…

How many exceptions to that no lobbyist rule do they get?

Rules are for the little people.

So are ethics.

Well, Hillary’s not a monster any longer; she’s Secretary of State now … tomorrow? Maybe a unicorn.

How fascinating! I must learn more about this man.

Hillary is no fool. If she finds herself being underminded in the slightest way, you can bet she will go on a scorched earth seek and destory mission that will eliminate anyone in her path. She has to know her goal of becoming president is all but kaput now. I also think that this wasn’t as much a way to keep Hillary in line (although I am sure it has some bearing in the decision) as much as Obama is going to be a total micromanager. The schmuck has never managed anything in his life and now he is going to fall into that trap at all entry level managers fall into. he is going to be acting not like a chief executive, but that of a senator, which means trying to do all things instead of really leading, managing and instructing. to effectively manage at the top, you have to be a good macromanager, something Reagan thoroughly understood. Before too long, he will be overwhelmed abd burnt down. Look at him already. Not even a month old and he is spinning his wheels over Rush Limbaugh and could not convince a single GOP’er to vote for his pile of pig poop despite trying to sweet talk them into doing so. The best it yet to come, kids.

Time for the definition of hypocrite to be replaced with Obama’s picture in all dictionaries.

344 tyree  Fri, Jan 30, 2009 5:21:39am

It is distressing to see the administration of President Barack Obama is already proving to be so easy to predict. Nancy Pelosi’s “Culture of Corruption” is in power. And President Obama was supported by people who called President Bush a liar. Liberals, apparently don’t know the meaning of the word.

I haven’t had a chance to read all the posts so don’t know if anyone has already come up with this comment. Reinstating Powers shows the Obama Administration’s green credentials - by recycling. Just wait, Reverend Wright will be recycled soon.

No doubt that Obama has a green administration…he wants all the green out of ‘our’ wallets for redistribution!

From the article: “Obama has tapped Power to be senior director for multilateral affairs at the National Security Council, a job that will require close contact and potential travel with Clinton, who is now secretary of state. NSC staffers often accompany the secretary of state on foreign trips.”

They can bury all the rhetorical hatches they want to sell this pick - looks like O now has his spy on Hillary’s team. Check! Let’s just see how well this plays out, Hill’s a sharp dealer.

349 RoughRider  Fri, Jan 30, 2009 7:58:29am

The article describes Power as a specialist in “global humanitarian issues.”

Can someone explain to me why one of these types is sitting in a senior level position on the NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL?

How safe does that make you feel?

Wow, that should make state visits MUCH MORE interesting! How do you think Billary will react behind closed doors? I’d love to be a fly on that wall….

Wasn’t she also the one advocating that we invade Israel to impose a two-state solution. Great. What a maroon.

This administration is aiming to be Carter II with all the anti-Israel types they’re hiring and the stances they’re taking.
